High drama unfolded in central Delhi on Parliament Street as Congress workers and opposition leaders were detained by the Delhi Police during a protest march towards the Election Commission of India. Leaders from the INDIA bloc, including Akhilesh Yadav and Abhishek Banerjee, were stopped at police barricades and detained. Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, accompanied by senior leaders such as KC Venugopal, Deepender Hooda, and Pawan Khera, staged an impromptu sit-in protest at gate number four of Akashvani Bhavan. Despite police requests to vacate the public broadcaster's premises as office hours concluded, the leaders refused to move unless allocated a designated dharna spot or permitted to march to the Election Commission. Frontal organisations, including the Indian Youth Congress and NSUI, also joined the demonstrations across central Delhi, leading to heavy security deployment, including the Rapid Action Force, to manage the continuing standoff.

00:00More Congress workers being detained, that's the latest visual on your screen.
00:03This is the Parliament Street, where, remember till now, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Vajra, KC Venugopal,
00:09senior leaders of the Congress, were sitting.
00:11Now we know that the workers are being detained, and the visuals that are on your screens, look at that.
00:16On one side, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Vajra, sitting, but that visual being pushed by the Delhi police into the
00:22police bus.
00:24With the office hour, the peak hour that's set to begin, they'll have to clear the roads,
00:30or they'll have to give a certain spot to the protesters as well.
00:35Because otherwise, there's going to be a massive traffic snarl also for the police to manage.
00:39Look at those visuals on your screen. I do not see Rahul Gandhi or Priyanka in it yet,
00:44which means they're possibly still on a protest, but we definitely see other protesters.
00:49Let's dip into the sounds coming in. What are these protesters saying?
00:53And then we'll go across to our colleagues on the ground as well.
00:56All right, that big bus of the protesters has been taken away.
01:00So many of them who've been detained by the Delhi police, high drama that's being reported.
01:07So this is the Akashwani Bhawan.
01:09And the reason that you see protests there is because protesters believe that they could have used
01:15at least Akashwani Bhawan's way to go to an election commission.
01:19That, of course, was not allowed.
01:20And that, on the streets, has been barricaded.
01:24So you cannot cross that area, which is about possibly 500 metres before the election commission.
01:31And the Congress leaders are not being permitted.
01:35And Rahul Gandhi saying,
01:36Gyanesh, it's done, bro.
01:39Inspired and taking a cue from what Salman Khan had said about Sonam Wangchuk.
01:44Now, Rahul Gandhi, sitting with his sister, fellow MP, Priyanka Gandhi, Bajra.
01:49And they're refusing to move.
01:50Rahul Gandhi is saying, give us a spot.
01:52We'll be sitting there on dharana.
01:53But we are not moving.
01:55So this means two scenarios, ladies and gentlemen.
01:58Either he continues to sit with Priyanka Gandhi, Bajra, and other senior leaders of the Congress,
02:02under this tree and then near the election commission.
02:06Or the Delhi police forcibly picks up Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Bajra,
02:11and then pushes them inside the police bus and detains them.
02:15If that happens, it will be all on camera and clearly a brownie point for Rahul Gandhi.
02:21Possibly that's one of the reasons that the Delhi police would want to avoid it.
02:24Negotiations are on.
02:26Election commission is not calling the delegation to meet the CEC or the ECs.
02:32So which means the showdown continues.
02:34The standoff is still on.
02:36That's Dipendar Hudda, Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal, Priyanka Gandhi, Bajra.
02:41The sibling duo clearly have managed to at least grab the headlines.
02:45And sitting there also is Pawan Khera, an old confidant and aide of former chief minister,
02:50Sheila Dixit.
02:51These are all senior leaders of the Congress party.
02:54Amit Bhardwaj is also on the ground.
02:56Amit, take us to the visuals.
02:58What is happening?
02:59The protesters are being detained.
03:01But is Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Bajra still there on the spot?
03:08Pooja, you know, since morning we have seen different kind of visuals unfolding right here
03:13on this stretch from Parliament complex to Sunset Mark.
03:20And this particular point where we are standing on the other side,
03:23are the barricades where the India Bloc MPs were stopped from marching forward towards
03:28the Election Commission of India.
03:30But that was possibly part one of this protest.
03:33And after that started the, you know, part two, chapter two for the day.
03:37What was that?
03:37India Bloc MPs protesting, many of them got detained.
03:44Akhile Shadav, Abhishek Banerjee, all of these leaders got detained.
03:48And I saw Rahul Gandhi, who was on the top of the barricade,
03:51stepping down from the barricade and running right across this lane that you see towards
03:58the Parliament.
03:59And when he returned, he immediately entered Akhaswani Bhavan and everybody was taken by
04:05surprise.
04:06And that's something that, again, as we had seen during 7LKM protests, nobody was prepared
04:14for that process.
04:15Delhi police was not prepared for the protest.
04:17And Rahul Gandhi had managed to pull off, the Congress party had managed to pull off good
04:22four to five hours of, you know, dharna in front of 7LKM.
04:28As we speak, it's been nearly five hours now.
04:31Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Badra, still inside Akhaswani Bhavan, the gate number four
04:35of the Akhaswani Bhavan.
04:37You would see the rapid action force deployed in the ground.
04:40Delhi police on its toes.
04:42They don't know what's going to happen next.
04:43There have been different conversations with the Congress party leaders and Rahul Gandhi
04:49himself to, you know, convince him that he must end this dharna because this is a government
04:54office, the office of the public broadcaster, the radio broadcaster.
04:59And that's in a way, now the employee, it's also the time when the office would get shut
05:04down.
05:05Most of the employees are supposed to step out.
05:07So there are different communications which have been made.
05:09But Rahul Gandhi is saying that, look, I have no intent to sit here.
05:13I want to go to Election Commission of India or tell me where I can sit on dharna.
05:18Give me a space where I can sit on dharna.
05:19So that's what is happening right now.
05:22One more change in the strategy that we have seen is that instead of putting all the force
05:27at once, Congress party today strategized it well.
05:32First India block MPs and after that you have different worker groups or the frontal groups
05:38of the Congress party who have been coming here every half an hour or one hour.
05:43So you had youth Congress, NSUI workers reaching here.
05:46Some of them also managed to breach into the Akaswani office in the noon, by the way.
05:51Now there's, you know, peace right now, but we do not know whether the other bunch of protesters
05:55So for now at least, it's a big test for the Delhi police to, how to ensure for Rahul Gandhi
06:00and Priyanka Gandhi-Wadra to move because they're refusing to do so.
06:03Thank you very much.
06:04Amit will be tracking all the latest from this protest.
06:06It's been a whole day of drama that we've seen in Central Delhi.
06:10We'll be tracking the India block protest agitation strategy and how the government is doubling
06:14down, saying there is nothing wrong with SIR and we continue to defend it.
