00:07athletic who's been on the station numerous times uh seems like a nice guy uh but I want to I

00:14you to hear this audio and I especially want you to hear some of the stuff at the end here

00:18Robert Mays talking about Deshaun Watson's performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers
00:22and the first four games really uh this is Robert Mays here and make sure you pay special attention
00:28to the end you don't have to mention Deshaun Watson as part of why this is a good story about
00:32the
00:33Browns he wasn't even playing that well what they did in the first half and the fact that the offense
00:37was playing well did not really have to do with the quarterback that much they had a dropped coverage
00:41on the huge Denzel Boston play he threw a screen that gained 20 yards and then the other big chunk
00:47that they had was that outbreaker to Casey Concepcion that he tried to throw incomplete and
00:51then in the second half he fumbled the ball he threw in a double coverage and got intercepted which was
00:55a bad decision even before that ball was getting tipped and then on the field goal drive that they
00:59had in the fourth quarter he fumbled the ball again even if Deshaun Watson was a star throughout this
01:04entire game I think there are issues with trying to make this about his own personal redemption we
01:09don't even have to pretend that he has a huge hand in this because he didn't have a huge hand
01:13in this
01:14compared to all the other stuff that we're talking about I really got to just screw with Robert Mays I
01:18and I I have a high level of respect for Robert Mays and I I he got very agitated yesterday
01:24on the
01:25internet when you uh you you you tried to have a back and forth yeah civil discussion well you said
01:33you disagreed with him yeah and things like that and I and and I know that you know some people
01:37I I've
01:37been worked into a shoot online before God knows you've been worked into a shoot every now and then oh
01:43and then he had all of Cleveland we all going after him but that well that was part of the
01:46thing
01:47it's like well I I don't want to ruin it for other shows I know that they have a good
01:49relationship
01:50with him on the midday show I don't want to ruin it for them but I went and apologized to

01:54Mennegan our producer well honestly I think I made his job a little tougher I didn't think you were
01:58over the line though no I've gone over the line before it certainly wasn't on him but I didn't think
02:02you were yeah I didn't think you were over the line with him yeah I I just thought that just

02:07back and listen to what he said he he is saying that this isn't a story about Sean Watson
02:12wrong he's had three come from behind fourth quarter drives I don't care what quarterback
02:17how much you hate the quarterback how much you think the quarterback sucks and at times we have
02:22thought to Sean Watson absolutely sucked I don't care about any of that well if he didn't play for
02:26the bronze would you be rooting against him yes me too yes but but that's not his job his job
02:32as a national pundit is to be fair about the football it's true he can openly say he's rooting
02:39against him I mean he's not necessarily a journalist who has to be objective on everything
02:43but people come to him because they like his football opinions when his football opinion is
02:48that it's everybody else but Watson wrong the guy has 10 first downs with his legs on a team with
02:54no
02:54running game those are backbreakers by opposing defenses ask other defensive coordinators so far
03:00this year how they feel about going up against Watson what would they all say man he's killing us with
03:04his legs and oh he has been inconsistent without a doubt but that's the league I I'm sorry watch the
03:10other quarterbacks around the league and look how inconsistent the quarterback play is we'll go over
03:13that a little bit later in the show yeah but you know you name a quarterback and I'll tell you
03:17that I
03:18think probably Sean Watson is playing better than most of them so that is the one part of this that

03:24just you're just not being fair and when earlier in the podcast he said the coverage by Amazon was
03:29quote gross because they had nice things to say about Sean Watson they didn't deify him okay they
03:36didn't stop and talk about what a hero he is and they didn't say what a victim he is like
03:42they like
03:43Al Michaels just didn't want to go over every single aspect of the accusations but do you guys want that
03:50as fans in the NFL not just Browns fans or the Browns fans that hate to Sean Watson a bunch
03:55of you do
03:55because I've heard from you you've written me very lengthy and by the way very thoughtful emails
04:01and I've read them and I don't I don't go after you guys I know I've gotten into with some
04:06callers
04:07that have made that the whole focus I'm like well I'm a sports talk show host in Cleveland
04:11you know I am kind of paid to talk about the football I'm not going to go over the court
04:16cases
04:16every day but if you want them to do that on national television then you also got to be fair
04:23and say hey when they bring the legal expert on to say hey it's it's very easy to indict a
04:29ham
04:29sandwich that's what grand juries will do but in this case given multiple opportunities they didn't
04:34then that's part of the story too regardless of how you feel about any of this stuff like do you
04:40really want the NFL broadcast to be contaminated by that for three hours no they got to talk about
04:45the football so don't get mad at Amazon for devoting two minutes to whether Deshaun Watson's gotten over
04:51the hump psychologically and then they don't talk about any of that stuff I don't think you want

05:36think it's a very high bar all right when it comes to quarterback play in this league my bar's not
05:41that high for Deshaun Watson it's really not that high for a lot of guys if you're playing winning
05:45football then I think you deserve a job but I think that this is where we find the most honest
05:50the most honest or fair conversation about Deshaun Watson yeah there's been a lot of uncomfortable
05:55conversations here but you know at some point they got to kick off and there's been a lot of players
06:00in the NFL that we've had to have some awkward uncomfortable conversations about before and if
06:06you're playing to a level that keeps you employed in the NFL I recognize that and I think you do
06:11too
06:11and he's playing at a level right now that keeps you employed in the NFL now I don't know about
06:16his
06:16long-term future I'm not ready to have that conversation yet it seems and it seems that a
06:19lot of other people they've kicked around that idea maybe it'll get brought up later this week I still
06:24think it's early because you can go out there to the Jets you could lose and all of a sudden
06:27you're
06:27three and two and people are upset like it is a it is a thin thread that is being held
06:33on to but
06:34I'm sorry when we bookend the conversation about Deshaun Watson with the other things the way that
06:41that clip shows it tells me that it's not all right there like my bar ain't that high so yeah
06:47when you
06:48throw a screen and you get 20 yards that's positive that's complimentary when you're able to find open
06:54wide receivers when you're able to bounce back after a great second quarter and a lackluster third where you
07:00lost the ball you've turned over the football and you're able to lead a drive to go out and take

07:05lead to win a football game I don't care if you are legally playing in the NFL and you are

07:11credit for those things and so if he did not play for the Browns while I might dislike it I

07:18give credit for these things the way we have with lots of other players who we didn't like that played
07:23for other teams that's just the name of it I have to try to be fair and we have maybe

07:29have to try to be fair I'm not a journalist I'm a guy on the radio but in the spirit

07:35like there's been plenty of times am I the biggest fan of Ben Roethlisberger absolutely not do I say
07:39that he plays great football he has to play great football obviously for the love of God I think he
07:44could have won more but that's a different conversation for another day we have been fair because I think what
07:49the Robert Mays of the world because they're not they're not listening to every show
07:52obviously so they're just they he's just gonna take it as you're being a homer and you're boy
07:56which and our fans can certainly not correct the record on that but we fully admitted like we didn't
08:04think this was gonna work and we're sitting here today going all right there are now reasons it
08:09might be able to work but if you were to hold my family at gunpoint is he gonna make it

08:16the season and are they gonna win nine games with him you know authoring up more come from behind
08:21wins and and and a lot of this but no I probably wouldn't I probably wouldn't put my family on

08:30gonna go 14 and 3 this is just where like the audience knows better like if the chubby guy on
08:35the right was getting getting defensive I think that a lot of fans would probably roll their eyes and go

08:47the football conversations I really didn't think the football conversation was very fair but I also
08:52know that I also have set a pretty low bar for him and if we are going to get to
08:57where we think we can
08:58go judging by seven in heaven like you're gonna run into a couple of those guys who can do it

09:03single week and not just hey we're better than the teams that we've played except for Jacksonville
09:10which is a guy that can do it every single week it's looking like yeah they they got a real
09:14look at it
09:14now with him but some of the other teams like all right Baker's hurt all right Bryce Young that's
09:19Sheckler Hyde but I love what they did against Tech McMillan considering what they did against the
09:22Lions back on Sunday night like it you get what I'm saying like it doesn't have to be amazing it
09:28just has to be complimentary and right now you're being complimentary and it's not worth it's not
09:32worth the guarantee contract they gave them nobody's saying it is I saw absolutely not coming back
09:36when I say a few nice things about Watson oh you think that's worth the money nobody does nobody does
09:41that's why we're saying he's not going to be here next year that's most of our thoughts he has the
09:46rest of the season to try to change that reality but right now again no I don't think he's going

09:50be here next year so nobody is saying a lot of the things these straw man arguments that you guys

09:55bringing up are outsiders being fair to Watson or are we overrating Watson because the bar is so low
