00:00Lima sent a clip of this is the athletic football show yeah okay Robert Mays who's usually a guest
00:05on Baskin and Phelps Lima does not believe that Robert Mays has been very fair to Deshaun Watson
00:12is what you're saying let's listen to this clip of Robert Mays this is the athletic football show
00:17after the Browns victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers hit it you don't have to mention
00:21Deshaun Watson as part of why this is a good story about the Browns he wasn't even playing
00:26that well what they did in the first half and the fact that the offense was playing well did not
00:30really have to do with the quarterback that much they had a dropped coverage on the huge Denzel
00:34Boston play he threw a screen that gained 20 yards and then the other big chunk that they had was
00:39that
00:39outbreaker to Casey Concepcion that he tried to throw incomplete and then in the second half he
00:44fumbled the ball he threw in a double coverage and got intercepted which was a bad decision even before
00:48that ball was getting tipped and then on the field goal drive that they had in the fourth quarter he
00:52fumbled the ball again even if Deshaun Watson was a star throughout this entire game I think there
00:57are issues with trying to make this about his own personal redemption we don't even have to pretend
01:02that he has a huge hand in this because he didn't have a huge hand in this compared to all
01:06the other
01:07stuff that we're talking about again audio courtesy of the athletic football show now I'm going to make
01:11that comparison or we'll we'll give our answer here in a second I do want to compare that to another
01:15national voice Mike Florio not very bit not a very big fan of Deshaun Watson you would say
01:21here's Mike Florio on Deshaun Watson and how he's played there were moments last night where Deshaun
01:28Watson looked like the old Deshaun Watson not moving vertically but eluding the pass rush that
01:34extra little second or two there was a play and it wasn't a very consequential gain but it was just
01:41an
01:41example of it could have been a sack it should have been a sack it possibly would have been a
01:46forced
01:46fumble and a change of possession Alex Highsmith was closing in from Deshaun Watson's left and he
01:52just very nimbly stepped away from him and bought enough time to get rid of the football extending a
01:58play doesn't mean Patrick Mahomes running around with the calliope playing it can also just be buying
02:06an extra second when the walls close in to get rid of the football and I noticed that from Watson
02:12last
02:13night multiple times and I thought that was pretty fair Mike Florio that was on Friday on pro football
02:18talk the show that he hosts so I wanted to play that in comparison because there are some national
02:22voices that are being fair uh I thought he played pretty well back on Thursday night you thought he
02:27played pretty well back on Thursday night that was considering that yeah there was a valley in there
02:31between those peaks uh definitely uh going back to the way that things went you know Robert Mays and
02:37you heard that at the end of that clip the framing of the redemption story not everything has to be
02:44feel good it doesn't have to be and I think Robert Mays is letting his dissatisfaction with the prime
02:53broadcast play into the analysis I think a little bit like yeah there's definitely some things that
02:59Deshaun Watson needs to improve on not out of the woods and I I've told you guys for the last
03:05three
03:06weeks my bar has to lower because we are not seeing the type of quarterback play that we saw
03:12when we first got Deshaun Watson or when Deshaun Watson at his last zenith in 2020 that it is not
03:18the same
03:18play across the league so my bar has to lower because it's him too because of the way the league
03:24is
03:25and I do think that Robert Mays probably was perturbed at the feature that went on and that might have
03:32played a little bit into it and I'm an emotional person so I can understand when a person gets
03:37emotional if you ask me I don't know where you come out on all this but you go right on
03:42ahead well
03:43do you want to talk about the football or this alleged redemption story because I've got a lot of both
03:48clearly Robert Mays wanted to wanted to paint he if we're talking football you can't tell me how bad
03:55he was but that snippet there oh he did I understand that said it was terrible but that snippet there
04:00at
04:00the end tells me that you've you've painted your personal thoughts into that yeah he called the
04:04broadcast gross said the broadcast was gross I don't know was there a lot of talk during the broadcast
04:09about what a great human being Deshaun Watson was did you see that did we watch a different game I
04:15know a lot of people were at the game but if you were at home watching it on Amazon Prime
04:20was that a
04:21big narrative during the game no it wasn't all they're talking about but there was the feature
04:27the sit down that had happened that people yeah to talk about what why as a football player why he's
04:34getting his mind right why he's been able to you know block out a lot of the as we always
04:41say
04:41self-imposed issues these are all things that he created right so I don't know who's calling it a
04:49redemption story I think a lot of people are arguing against a redemption story when I don't
04:54see anybody really saying it's a redemption story football redemption maybe not like him as a person
05:01I'm just not seeing that you guys feel free to forward any of those any of those to me I
05:07have not
05:07seen it so I think it's the all-time straw man I think people are just so mad that he's
05:12either the
05:12quarterback or that he's featured again that he came out and they announced his name that he got
05:18cheers the football fans are behaving like football fans I think that's what's really irritating people
05:24and then fine but maybe this isn't the sport for you because I got to I had to go against
05:29Ben
05:29Roethlisberger for how many years and I don't remember this being the complaint every game why
05:35didn't the broadcast bring up the allegations against Big Ben where were the allegations why
05:39didn't they do that no I didn't see that I didn't see that from anybody I I just didn't like
05:43eventually he's an eligible football player to be on the field well there comes a point where
05:48so why is it different in this case uh frankly it's not being accused of the same things that
05:53Big Ben was accused no but frankly they're all bad but they're not I I understand I understand we're
05:59gonna put them all in the exact same bucket why was one player because he won the Super Bowl is
06:03that
06:03why maybe is it just simply because Big Ben had Super Bowl maybe but I I can't give you the
06:08answer
06:08that Robert Mays would give you I I don't feel that way okay um I I know that as an
06:15adult if I'm
06:16going to be a pro sports fan there's going to have to be a compartmentalization there I have to
06:25if I'm going to be a fan of a pro football team especially because you got more players on there
06:28than anything you know Mike Flory always brings up the rap sheet on a lot of different things there's a
06:33lot
06:33of teams excuse me every team has a player who's had checkered pasts well just submit to me the team
06:41that I can root for there isn't no there's gotta be one the way that people talk all high and
06:45mighty
06:45about they all how and we did this they all have a history when we were getting beat by Big
06:49Ben
06:49our fans would bring up everything that he was accused of and that would what make us feel better
06:55about ourselves but it didn't it never made me feel better about him dominating us time and time
06:59again and what did we even say at the time and you know this is you want to talk about
07:02emotions
07:03I'd say you know what where's our bad guy where's our bad guy so we can win football games because
07:08apparently nobody cares and now they only care when what it happens because it's our starting
07:13quarterback we've had bad guys or or uh guys who are not well behaved we've had bad dudes we just
07:20haven't had a call we haven't had a culture at all and hey you're three and one I don't even
07:23know
07:23what their culture is right now but your your culture is three and one and we're all having fun and
07:27and that's what it is I I don't know about what policing is going on in the locker room if
07:32there
07:32is any anything like that I just think that everybody's happy and hunky-dory that things
07:35have started off so well for the Cleveland Browns when they've started off so terribly
07:38in other places around the league that had much higher aspirations than what we did
07:43so it's just like us I'm I'm trying to keep the good vibes going and I think a lot of
07:46Browns fans are
07:47and yeah like to try to be fair and to try to it's it's I I understand it's a hard
07:55thing to do
07:56I'm not always fair when I'm angry I know that but you're trying to be fair and go down the
08:03line
08:03like yeah there's still more to be desired but there's more to be desired with all the other
08:07quarterbacks and when I just hear that at the end of Robert Mays I go I trust you I trust
08:12your opinion
08:13but has it been painted by the feature that you saw so that's the other part I want to get
08:17to
08:18is that Robert Mays I listen to him I think he's a really smart guy and I think the Deshaun
08:24Watson
08:24experience is making smart people really really dumb and I think listening to him talk about the
08:31first half we we all bashed the second half there was a lot bad in the second half and there
08:35were
08:36some ball security things that Deshaun Watson did in the second half but if you're not going to
08:40mention the incredible uh precise throw to Jerry Judy that got that drive started and then you know
08:47the game-winning drive that if we're only going to mention that he took a bad sack then but we're
08:54not
08:54going to mention the good throws to get him into range and then hitting Fannin and then them being
08:58able to do it for the third straight game and then in the first half to say that's all on
09:02his teammates
09:03yeah actually his teammates missed two of his best throws I mean Denzel Ward Denzel Boston had two
09:09awesome awesome throws he had one at Concepcion uh these were the misses his misses were impressive
09:14they went vertical this wasn't just dink and dunk around the line of scrimmage and all yards after the
09:20catch and to talk about the Steelers and the blown coverage yeah I talked to coach Riz who went down
09:26and broke down every game since well Deshaun's eyes actually helped them in blowing the coverage so
09:31again another positive step so if you're poo-pooing that first half by Deshaun Watson just admit you
09:37can't possibly be fair and that's what Robert Mays I think exposed himself as a otherwise really really
09:42smart football guy who's kind of incapable of being fair and balanced uh when it comes to the actual
09:48football
