00:00I'm going to be a hundred percent honest.
00:01I kind of just forgot about the fact that Deshaun Watson had media
00:04availability.
00:05Like it wasn't even running through my head that he was going to have to
00:09talk more than the,
00:10the post game about what was going to happen.
00:13And I remembered obviously as I woke up today and I was like,
00:16Oh yeah,
00:16Deshaun is going to speak.
00:19And kind of just figured it would be like the most mundane,
00:23you know,
00:24didn't play well hoping to get back in week two,
00:28just run of the mill type of stuff.
00:29Exactly what you'd expect out of a quarterback who,
00:32you know,
00:32lost the game by 24 points.
00:34And really for the majority of the game played much worse than that.
00:37I,
00:37what more do you say?
00:38The offense stunk.
00:39Uh,
00:40yeah,
00:40I didn't play good enough.
00:41Thought it was going to be pretty much.
00:43I mean,
00:43Todd Munkins pretty much just been keeping this is vanilla playing Kevin
00:47Stefanski like,
00:48as you can,
00:48I'd imagine the message would have been much the same.
00:52So I have to be a hundred percent honest.
00:54I said,
00:54even obviously I think a lot of us know the Deshaun quote that's coming
00:58here before he got to that,
00:59he was asked whether or not he felt,
01:01you know,
01:01what did you do well in week one?
01:03And even that answer,
01:04uh,
01:05had me a little jaw dropped.
01:06Final completions operating.
01:08Well,
01:08that's,
01:09I mean,
01:09that's pretty much it had one turn up turnover,
01:11a couple,
01:12you know,
01:12that one side formal obviously got to protect the ball,
01:14but we recovered it.
01:15That's pretty much it for,
01:17for real.
01:17You know,
01:18we just didn't have opportunities in the red zone to get your points.
01:21Um,
01:22only six incompletions.
01:23One of them was a pig.
01:24One was the end of the game or end of the half.
01:27Tip ball,
01:29two missed throws and then a throwaway.
01:30So,
01:31I mean,
01:33that,
01:33that's your evaluation.
01:35Hey,
01:35completed all my past.
01:36Are you just staring down at your stats?
01:39And you're like,
01:39I mean,
01:39if I complete 16 of 22 every single day,
01:42what are they going to say bad about me?
01:43It's like,
01:43no,
01:44we all watch it with our own two eyes.
01:45I wouldn't say any of the things that you basically just laid out.
01:48You actually did well.
01:49Hey,
01:50completed a bunch of passes.
01:51You did do that.
01:51Congratulations.
01:52Check.
01:52Number one,
01:53uh,
01:53operation.
01:54I almost vividly remember the fact that we had at least two false start or a
01:57delay of game penalties,
01:59at least one burn timeout,
02:01if not two,
02:01because we couldn't get lined up correctly and penalties galore.
02:06Like this team got penalized 11 times.
02:08And I think at least like seven of them were on the offense.
02:11No,
02:12you were getting killed.
02:13It was absolutely horrendous.
02:15And if you asked to Sean,
02:16you would have thought they lost this game by two.
02:19You would have thought this was a,
02:20I mean,
02:21I was trying to think of a easy way to get to a two point loss.
02:23I don't know that that really exists,
02:24but sure.
02:26Like I'm trying to just rally that up in my mind.
02:29You would have thought this game was like 24,
02:3121.
02:31It was like,
02:32Hey,
02:32I mean,
02:32we operated.
02:33Oh yeah.
02:34We didn't get a ton of shots in the red zone.
02:36Why do you think that is?
02:38Because you stunk because you were bad.
02:42It's like,
02:42I sit here and listen to it.
02:44I know he was living in a bubble,
02:46you know,
02:46prior to the fact that nobody was telling him that he was going to get booed on
02:49the field.
02:50As soon as he walked into a field in Cleveland,
02:53I don't know where you were getting that information,
02:55but it continues to prove that you do just live in a bubble.
03:00I don't think it should be that difficult for a quarterback to go out and admit,
03:04Hey,
03:04I played a bad game.
03:05In fact,
03:06I would say a majority of the quarterbacks in the NFL probably don't even play that
03:09bad of a game.
03:10And it's just like,
03:11Hey,
03:11I got to be better.
03:12It's like Trevor Lawrence might've walked out there and been like,
03:14I got to be better.
03:15Only put up 34.
03:16It's like,
03:17okay,
03:18Trevor,
03:18right?
03:19Or you lose a game and you put up 24 and it's like,
03:21Hey,
03:21I got to do some better things here.
03:23It's like,
03:23well,
03:23at least you put up 24.
03:24And that is a typical winning football score.
03:26You put up 24 in a game.
03:27You should probably expect to win that game.
03:31But this is a guy who put up three until the final two minutes.
03:35You would have thought that he played fantastic football.
03:37You would have think,
03:38Hey,
03:38you know,
03:38potentially they won by the way he was talking,
03:41but no,
03:42let's just continue to run on that.
03:43And you think that's as bad as it could have possibly have gotten.
03:46Well,
03:47no,
03:47let's,
03:48let's just dig right back in that bag to Deshaun.
03:50Cause you just didn't dig yourself a hole.
03:53That was quite deep enough.
03:54No,
03:55I think,
03:55I think personally,
03:56I think all that is for the media.
03:58I mean,
03:58I think the media has this expectation that I'm supposed to throw 400 yards
04:02and five touchdowns every week.
04:04So,
04:05so that happens,
04:05I guess it's going to be the same,
04:07same situation.
04:08So again,
04:09my job is to make sure I'm operating well,
04:11so we can try to get a win and,
04:12and keep moving forward from there.
04:16What media is Deshaun talking?
04:17Who in their right mind has ever said at any point leading up to this
04:21season,
04:22Deshaun's got to go out there and throw for,
04:23400 yards and five touchdowns.
04:25That would be a good game.
04:28I mean,
04:30his passing yard lines was set at 170.
04:32It's like 176.
04:35And we're talking about on the,
04:36the pregame show.
04:37I was like,
04:37Hey,
04:37I might be taking the over on that.
04:39I did.
04:39Unfortunately,
04:40parlayed it with somebody that didn't hit,
04:41but I was sitting there and I'm like,
04:43I think I have to bet this.
04:44Like,
04:45this is an egregiously low line.
04:46Deshaun goes out there and throws for 200 yards.
04:48If it's winning football with 200 yards,
04:51good enough for me.
04:52Like if you're playing competitive football with 200 yards,
04:55good enough for me.
04:57I just don't know what bubble you're living in.
04:59What media are you listening to?
05:01Cause we talked to a majority of them,
05:03right?
05:03Mary Kay's on the station multiple times a week.
05:05We're talking to Dan lobby coming up at nine 20 of cleveland.com.
05:08Ashley Bassog,
05:09Albert Breer,
05:10Ross Tucker,
05:11continue on our weekly guests upon weekly guests that exist on this
05:14station.
05:15Not one time.
05:16Have I heard somebody say that Deshaun needs to throw for,
05:18I mean,
05:19forget about the outrageous numbers that he just threw out.
05:21I haven't heard anybody even say,
05:23uh,
05:24Deshaun's got to go out there and throw for two 50 or two 75 and two
05:27touchdowns.
05:28I think everybody's evaluation has pretty much been the same.
05:32Uh,
05:32Deshaun go out there and try and win the game,
05:36like play winning football,
05:37eliminate the mistakes,
05:38make sure the offense has some elongated drives,
05:41push the ball down the field every once in a while.
05:43And if you're actually operating a competent offense and you're not the
05:47reason they lose,
05:48I don't think people will be very upset.
05:50Unfortunately,
05:51I think a lot of us walked away from Sunday being like the John wasn't the
05:54only reason we lost,
05:55but he was certainly a part of the reason that we lost that game.
05:58Him not playing well enough,
05:59definitely contributed to the loss.
06:02So yeah,
06:03if you're going to play that brand of football,
06:05the interception was egregious.
06:06You should have thrown another one.
06:08He talked about the fumble.
06:09They recovered.
06:09He also had another one that they didn't recover.
06:11Uh,
06:11they got turned away because his knee skidded against the ground,
06:14a millisecond before the ball popped out.
06:17I just don't know what world you're living in.
06:20It is completely arbitrary to think that anybody has any sort of expectation
06:26that actually lands there.
06:28And Ashley Bastock,
06:30who I mentioned,
06:30uh,
06:30was on the station earlier today.
06:32She is every Wednesday with afternoon drive and brought up two very,
06:35I think key things that I actually take away from those comments from
06:39Deshaun.
06:40He is bothered by the narrative surrounding him.
06:44And it makes me wonder again,
06:46if he is still the starter after this week two game and is starting that week three home opener
06:52against the Panthers.
06:53Like what is this going to look like?
06:57And is he prepared to handle negative reaction?
07:01Because like,
07:01of course I think that statement was very hyperbolic.
07:04I haven't seen anyone in the media suggesting that this is a failure or any start of his,
07:09it's a failure.
07:10If he doesn't throw for 400 yards and five touchdowns,
07:13I think actually we've all been pretty clear that like 2020 Deshaun Watson doesn't exist anymore.
07:20And you really just sort of need serviceable quarterback play this year,
07:24more than anything.
07:25Yeah.
07:26Like,
07:26is this not the,
07:27the main takeaway that we had from this is kind of what I was bringing up before.
07:30It's just like,
07:32I don't think anybody has an expectation that Deshaun has to be great.
07:35He's not going to be a guy that goes out there and,
07:37you know,
07:37single-handedly wins you football games.
07:39He's not going to be the reason more likely than not you win games.
07:42And I think we've all kind of accepted the reality of that at this point in his career.
07:46But if you're going to start for my football team,
07:48it's kind of just go out there and give everybody else an opportunity to actually go win the game.
07:53Something that Deshaun was not doing.
07:54They weren't pressing the ball down the field,
07:56whether that be on him or Todd Munkin,
07:58he threw a horrible interception.
08:00They were going three and out.
08:01They weren't picking up first downs.
08:03So even if you're completing passes,
08:04you're not doing it effectively.
08:07We're like,
08:07whatever you're actually attempting to do is not good enough.
08:11Like you got to find the guys beyond the sticks.
08:13You have to complete passes.
08:14You have to not tuck the ball in run.
08:16Anytime there's a semblance of pressure.
08:17And we'll talk about that offensive line.
08:19Cause I've heard mixed reviews and I don't think anybody's talking about enough about the reality that was.
08:26But the other main thing that I get on this is actually highlighted,
08:30obviously the,
08:30the mental toughness aspect of this,
08:32right?
08:32The fans being his head,
08:33him being bothered by the narrative.
08:35And like,
08:35all I asked for this year was you got an entire season to go clear your mind,
08:40right?
08:40You got cheered off the field with an Achilles injury.
08:43You knew fans are going to be upset.
08:45Clear your head,
08:46come into this with the right mindset and just go,
08:48you know what?
08:48I'm going to play good football.
08:49And that's all that really matters right now.
08:51And that's all I can control.
08:52People are going to be mad.
08:53People are going to be upset.
08:54And to Todd's credit,
08:55as much as I can't stand him repeating it every 30 seconds,
08:58yes,
08:59going and playing good football is the only way that you can block all of that out.
09:03Okay.
09:03Well,
09:03you clearly made it very obvious that,
09:07you know,
09:07after the bills game,
09:09you weren't doing very good to block all of that out.
09:11And the fan reaction and everything else,
09:13you were not in the correct mindset.
09:14This is just another example to me of Deshaun not being in the correct mindset.
09:19This is him.
09:20Once again,
09:21still worrying more about the fans,
09:22worrying more about the media.
09:23And he went on later in his press conference to talk about,
09:26Oh,
09:27you know,
09:27Todd keeps preaching.
09:28You know,
09:28don't,
09:28don't let the media narrative overtake anything.
09:31You're clearly listening to it.
09:33You're listening to what everybody else has to say.
09:35Instead of just putting your head down,
09:37going to work,
09:37playing the game and doing the best of your ability.
09:39If you sit there and think,
09:41Oh,
09:41the only way I'm going to make anybody happy today is throwing for 400 yards and
09:44five touchdowns.
09:46Yeah.
09:46Probably not going to be a very good day.
09:47You're not coming in with the right mindset.
09:49Go play winning football.
09:51I guarantee you,
09:52you went out against Jacksonville.
09:53You didn't have to win the game.
09:54Most of us are expecting you to lose.
09:56You go out there and it was the defense getting torched the way they were.
09:59And the Browns went out and scored how 17 points,
10:0220 points.
10:03We probably would have been like,
10:04Oh,
10:05well,
10:05the only offense was moving.
10:06I mean,
10:07Deshaun made one bad interception and it's not great that we have reporters that
10:10are there every time.
10:11I'm like Daryl,
10:11who we talked to yesterday.
10:12That was like,
10:12he makes that throw several times a week,
10:16seen it with my own two eyes and always misses the linebacker.
10:19And he did it again.
10:21But you make that.
10:22Okay.
10:23Bad mistake.
10:24Deshaun's got to learn from it,
10:25but the offense was still moving.
10:26It was one bad mistake and it might not have helped you win the game,
10:29but we're probably not just going to flat out kill him over it.
10:33I just can't get over the idea that you just can't put it behind you or
10:37realize that you need to put it behind you.
10:39It is still the thing that is very obviously front of mind.
10:43It is the only thing that exists in your head.
10:46And to be fair,
10:48I'm sorry,
10:48but Deshaun,
10:49you signed a $230 million contract.
10:51You haven't played well for sure for the last four years,
10:54but barely at all over the last four years,
10:57you're judged on a different scale.
10:59Like everybody wants to talk about the fact that,
11:01would you have been talking about that way?
11:03If it was Shador,
11:04would he have been benched?
11:05And people bring up this aspect.
11:06No,
11:06no,
11:06no,
11:07he wouldn't be that because he's not getting paid $230 million.
11:10He's 24 years old,
11:11not 31 years old.
11:13It's a different aspect.
11:14There is a sense of learning and figuring things out.
11:17You're not learning and figuring things out as a quarterback in the NFL at 31 years old,
11:21when you've already played at a top five level previously in your career.
11:24Yes,
11:25you are judged on a different scale than the other quarterbacks in that room.
11:28Congratulations.
11:29Time to wake up and see it.
11:31There's good reasons for it.
11:33And I could go here and list the 35 of them that exist,
11:36but I think we're all pretty well aware at this point,
11:38what those reasons are.
11:41Like you have off the field issues.
11:43You got everything else,
11:44everything that has contributed from when you are here.
11:46Yes,
11:46you are held to a different standard than everybody else.
11:49He was drafted in the third and the fifth round in the sixth round.
11:51That's sitting in that quarterback room right now.
11:53You're held to a higher standard.
11:55Congratulations.
11:56Welcome to getting paid.
11:58That's how this works.
11:592 1 6 4 7 4 double 92.
12:02Our expectations of Deshaun Watson unfair right now for media fans,
12:06anything else.
12:07Cause I think the expectations are actually as fair as fair can be.
12:10Now media reaction might not be fair,
12:13but that's on Deshaun.
12:14Like you created that.
12:15I think the actual expectations of what you think you're getting out of
12:18Deshaun,
12:18what would have constituted is okay.
12:20Play pretty good play,
12:22not unfair whatsoever.
12:23And it's certainly not 400 yards and five touchdowns.
