00:15I really, truly believe the Browns are a quarterback away from being a good team.
00:19At halftime in this game, Deshaun Watson had two completions, okay?
00:24Anybody who—the best game Deshaun Watson has played this year was the primetime game against the Steelers, without question.
00:29And a lot of people see 4-2 Browns and watch that one game and are saying, wow, Deshaun is
00:34playing well.
00:35The last two games he's played, the loss to the Jets and this win over the Ravens, have been horrible,
00:39horrible football.
00:40Deshaun is not playing good quarterback. He's one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the league.
00:43See, I don't agree with all that because you say they're a quarterback away from being a good team.
00:47I got nothing against Ben Solek. Let me say it.
00:51I watched that game four times over. I agree with Moose Johnson.
00:54Hey, guys, I know I've—I don't think this show has been huge fans of Deshaun Watson over the last four
01:01years, guys.
01:02I watched that game four times over. Now, I agree with Moose. I didn't see anybody open in the first
01:06half.
01:07And if he would have force-fed some of those throws, you are not winning that football game, and he
01:12has four picks at the end of the first half.
01:14With Kyle Hamilton trolling around? Are you kidding me?
01:17I am dead serious.
01:18How many more times do you want to see Kyle Hamilton turn games, wins into losses?
01:22I can only cause it how I seize it.
01:24And I know that we've been trying to get him out of here on the first thing smoking over the
01:29last 24 months before this all started.
01:33But we can only call it down the line.
01:35And if I'm calling it down the line, I got no hate.
01:38I got no nastiness.
01:40We're trying to win football games here.
01:42Watching that game over and over.
01:44And you can say, Kenny, you can watch as many times as you want.
01:46You don't know what you're looking at.
01:47Okay, fine.
01:47If you want to say that, that's okay.
01:49That's your opinion.
01:50But I agree with Moose Johnston.
01:52He said it during the broadcast.
01:53Like, guys weren't open.
01:54And if he would have forced it, we would be sitting here at 3-3, and these lines would be
01:59full about getting rid of Deshaun Watson.
02:02Because he would have been in pick city had he had tried to do that.
02:06Like, pulling it down and having 25 or whatever it was, yards passing at halftime, was, I hate to say
02:11it, the right thing to do.
02:12Well, I don't hate to say it.
02:13It was the right thing to do.
02:14I wish guys were open.
02:16They weren't.
02:16They had to go in.
02:17They had to make some adjustments.
02:18They had to get the information together.
02:20And then they were able to move the ball a little bit.
02:22They took advantage of a turnover.
02:23They played tight defense.
02:24They played complimentary football.
02:26I know that some of the punts weren't there.
02:28They were able to withstand it.
02:29They were able to make things difficult for Tyler Huntley.
02:33And then in the end, they gave themselves a chance to win.
02:36Even with a couple of the mistakes, they gave themselves a chance to win.
02:39So what did he do?
02:40Did Deshaun Watson turn the football over on Sunday?
02:43No.
02:44And they gave themselves a chance to win.
02:46Do your best to eliminate turnovers.
02:48Well, in a weird way.
02:48It's the same thing Belichick says, man.
02:50The best chance in these games is to have him operate like, and it's not exciting football,
02:55but to have him operate like a very, very, I can't even say composed, because I can't
03:01even say that he's always composed, but methodical and game manager type is probably a better
03:09alternative.
03:09Like, I know there's a thought, well, what if they had somebody who's just going to throw
03:14it all over the board?
03:15You know, probably Shador.
03:16Shador, like, would Shador have more touchdown passes than Deshaun Watson throwing to Boston?
03:21And I actually probably would concede that.
03:22I also think he would be lulled into throwing a bunch of interceptions that could put them
03:27out of the game.
03:28And right now, you need a quarterback that isn't going to take, it's a little more risk
03:32averse.
03:32That probably is what helps this team now.
03:35Will that be the solution by week 13, 14, 15?
03:38Could be totally different.
03:39Could be flipped.
03:40Like, if the offensive line gels a lot more and they actually find a running game, you
03:45know, maybe we'll revisit this.
03:47You're eventually going to need a quarterback who will pull the trigger on more balls.
03:51And you want to see more chemistry with the wide receivers.
03:54I don't disagree with that.
03:56But if you notice, they did make, and the coach admitted this, they made big time adjustments.
04:00The players admitted this.
04:01They made huge adjustments from the first and second half.
04:05And what do you know?
04:06Guys were getting open.
04:07And then he wasn't as gun shy.
04:09He did make some tough throws.
04:11I know he had another one where the Baltimore dude jumped, you know, three feet in the air
04:15to, to, to, to, to, to alter.
04:17And who knows if that ball ever gets home?
04:19You know, he's a little late on that throw.
04:21Who knows if it ever gets home?
04:22But that's a tough team when they're dropping seven to find windows.
04:26And if you notice in the second half, guys were open a little bit more as Munkin adjusted
04:30the scheme.
04:31And they all spoke to that.
04:32He had one, I think, behind Casey Concepcion.
04:35He seemed almost surprised that he was open at that moment.
04:38Like there, there was just so much coverage there.
04:40And part of that is explainable.
04:41Like we can get really nitty gritty and go, yeah, they don't respect your run game.
04:44So if they don't respect your run game and they, your quarterback is not that great.
04:48He's not, he, he is, he is, again, I need him to be 20, 26 to Sean Watson.
04:53If you're still mad that he's not 20, 20 to Sean Watson, you're not living in the now
04:58you're living in the past.
04:59That's never coming back.
05:00He was a 24 year old person.
05:02Then he's 30 years old.
05:03Now he's had several injuries and several surgeries since it's, it's a lot different.
05:07So I need him to be the 30 year old version of himself.
05:10And what's the 30 year old version of himself?
05:11Try and take care of the football.
05:13All right.
05:14Trying to, trying to be smart, trying to not force passes, try not to be what he was.
05:18And if he continues to be this way, yeah, you're, you're playing against some teams
05:22that play sloppy football and you're going to put yourself in positions to win.
05:25Like, yeah, I think that a lot of people know that if you want to compete for the
05:29ultimate prize, Sean Watson, ain't your guy.
05:31I'm trying to get up off the mat guys.
05:33Like I am.
05:34And, and as of right now, like I'm, I'm in a purgatory right now, this quarterback
05:39class that we thought was going to be this huge quarterback class.
05:42All right.
05:42Well, guys are getting hurt or benched left and right.
05:44All right.
05:45So I got that going against me.
05:46I got a elite quarterback class.
05:50That's a, that's already in the NFL that no, he can't compete with.
05:54How good can I be then?
05:55Why do I waste time?
05:56They're trying to lose.
05:57There's no point in it.
05:58I'm four and two.
05:59So let's see how good we can possibly be.
06:01How good can we be?
06:03We can maximize what we have.
06:04And I think what maximizing it is getting into the wild card and getting into the
06:08playoffs.
06:08That's what I think is maximizing it.
06:10If you do that, I think they've done everything they can.
06:12And you've built those, those, those building blocks.
06:15You've had that foundation to do something in 2027 with the draft.
06:19You've got to get your quarterback situation figured out, obviously, but
06:21everybody's going to know that all year.
06:23Everybody's going to know that all year.
06:25So you're a quarterback away from being the Ravens.
06:29Are you a quarterback away from being the can't say Bengals, uh, chiefs bills.
06:35I think the bills would say they still need some help around Josh Allen.
06:38Certainly like maybe you are, but I really think you still need some help.
06:44And I don't, I'm not in a position to just give it all up to put that help out
06:48there.
06:48When I got Khalil Mack, who's 35 years old.
06:51I don't know if that's really the prudent move when we mix it all together.
06:552, 1, 6, 4, 7, 4, double low 92.
06:57Well, I want to get to you guys on this a quarterback away.
06:59Are they a quarterback away or are they a quarterback away from what?
07:02As far as competitiveness, Ken Carmen, Anthony Lima, we'll get to you guys
07:06coming up eight o'clock.
07:07We go around the, I want to get to the phones.
07:10Do you think we're a quarterback away?
07:12I don't quarterback away from being a good team.
07:15Quote unquote, according to Ben Solak ESPN quarterback away from being a good team.
07:18I think that we have the makings of a good team right now.
07:21I think that we are probably if, you know, the schedule change next year, I think we're
07:28a middle of the road type of football team.
07:29I think we can over, I think we can overachieve this year, but you're, you're trying to eliminate
07:34turnovers.
07:35Like you have the makings of what is a good football team.
07:37And guys, you look at this roster.
07:38I was very worried about its depth at the beginning of the year.
07:42And there's some guys, they're proven to be a real big help to this team.
07:45And guys who I'm not talking on the front list and the first wave of starters, I'm looking
07:50at guys a little bit later on that have started to stick out who I circle.
07:54And it's helped out this football team immensely to get off to a four and two start.
07:59Still, I think they're so thin in other places that yeah, anybody who adds Josh Allen to their
08:06football team changes their expectations.
08:08Anybody who adds Mahomes to their football team changes their expectations, but I still
08:14think there's a thinness there that is going to affect you eventually down the line, but
08:18you'd be known as a good football team.
08:20You'd be known even as a contender, but could you do it?
08:23Could you do the whole thing?
08:24I'm not sure.
08:25Like you don't have to be perfect.
08:27There's always going to be a weak spot everywhere.
08:29But when you say a quarterback away and then people love to say, well, everybody's quarterback
08:35away.
08:35They are quarterback away from what?
08:38Getting off the mat, being competitive, being a contender.
08:41Yeah.
08:41If they had Josh Allen right now with this defense, I'd be thinking they could make a
08:46legitimate deep AFC playoff run and maybe more.
08:50It's still tough without a running game, but if you had Josh Allen, you'd like to think
08:53the running game would get going.
08:55But unfortunately, it's not easy to go pluck a Josh Allen.
08:58So I think a lot of teams are in that same boat.
09:02You know, I know that Joe Burrow in Cincinnati is the one anomaly to the rule.
09:05The one team that has a good quarterback, but, you know, considering he either can't stay
09:10healthy or they have nothing else when it comes to defense around them, that's an issue
09:15too.
09:15So that's why I think we throw out needs a quarterback.
09:17I probably said that over the years a bunch.
09:19Hey, this team needs a quarterback.
09:21This team needs a quarterback.
09:21And the reality is, it's hard to feel like you can make a deep run without a top five
09:27quarterback, unless you have a stacked team from start to finish, like the Eagles, and
09:32then you don't need a top five quarterback.
09:34The Seahawks did.
09:36The Seahawks.
09:37Yeah.
09:37They did not have.
09:37Now, statistically, there were things that Darnold did that made him look like it.
09:41But if you watch the games, at no point, even though Sam Darnold had two incredible
09:46years record-wise, at no point has anybody thought he was a top five quarterback.
09:49The defense has played so well that it's given them a chance to be in the game late in these
09:54games, and they're winning these one-score games right now.
09:57They're four and one in one-score games.
09:59And he turns into a top ten quarterback at the end of these games.
10:01Right, in the last ten minutes of games.
10:032-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92.
10:06Joe in North Ridgeville.
10:08You're next up on the fan.
10:09Hello, Joe.
10:10Hi, guys.
10:11How we doing?
10:12Doing well, Joe.
10:12Go right on ahead.
10:14Hey, I think what Anthony was just saying about us not having that.
10:20Quarterback right now.
10:22But he is coming through in the fourth quarter.
10:25And our defense is playing really good.
10:28We can definitely depend on them.
10:31Yep.
10:31I think we need to get Deshaun some help in that running game.
10:34And I think with what's going on with the Indianapolis Colts, that maybe we...
10:40What about Jonathan Taylor?
10:43Well, the only thing that you're going to hate hearing this, I guarantee that they're
10:46thinking this.
10:47Like, Jonathan Taylor's a fine, fine, fine, fine, fine running back.
10:51God, he's going to hate hearing this.
10:53Joe, thank you.
10:54I'll leave him on the phone for this.
10:58So, there's something about the age of 27.
11:00Am I wrong on this, Anthony?
11:02Tell me when I'm wrong.
11:04There's some...
11:04He's 20...
11:05He's turned 27.
11:06There's something about the age of 27 that starts to scare teams away.
11:10The analytical groups say that 27 is when you start to do the fall off there.
11:14So, I'm sure a team like the Colts, who are trying to embrace a build, are probably going
11:20to ask an exorbitant amount of picks for him, or a very high pick that I don't think Andrew
11:28Berry would be willing to part with.
11:31Yeah, I can see that.
11:32I know he's had some injury history in the past.
11:35I mean, he's great.
11:36He's great.
11:37He is.
11:39For what I see in how he plays, he's great.
11:42He can catch the ball.
11:43He is a three-down back.
11:46Obviously, our running backs are all dealing with injuries now.
11:50We have two guys that we just got from the practice squad and whatever.
11:56They did great this week.
11:58And you can see it helped our offense when they were able to move the ball.
12:02So, Coach Lance, I'll tell you this, Joe, and thank you very much for the call, because
12:05I just remember the conversation.
12:07I remember T.A. texting back and forth with us and everything like that when Nick was 27.
12:13And I'm over here.
12:14Like, everybody pounded drums for Nick and extensions and all that other stuff.
12:17And they're going, well, 27.
12:2027.
12:21It's when you start.
12:22I'm like, man, that's why you get three years in the NFL.
12:25And then all of a sudden, guys like Derrick Henry are the grand old men, but that's few
12:29and far between.
12:30I would say the equivalent here is the Christian McCaffrey trade.
12:35So, Christian McCaffrey was 26 and was, you know, dual purpose.
12:39You could throw to him.
12:41Man, he was electric, obviously.
12:43But we saw how bad it was in Carolina.
12:45We played them.
12:46Do you remember?
12:46Yeah.
12:46And he couldn't get anything going.
12:47But when he did, he had one, I think there was a flag on that he got out into the
12:51open
12:52field.
12:52You're like, oh, this is different.
12:53There's not a lot of guys that look like this in the NFL.
12:56And if you watch Jonathan Taylor, now he's having statistically his worst year.
13:00I think in the NFL, he's only averaging four yards per carry.
13:03But I think it's pretty clear that if he got on the right team in the right offense, that
13:09it could look exactly like Jonathan Taylor every year.
13:11Like, I don't think he's slowing down necessarily.
13:13The Christian McCaffrey trade was second, third, fourth, and a fifth round of the following
13:18year.
13:18I mean, that's a haul.
13:19Okay.
13:20That is a lot.
13:21That's a lot.
13:21Now, he's seen as a multi-purpose type of guy.
13:24Jonathan Taylor's a great player.
13:26Great player.
13:26But I'm telling you, that age, that 27 age, they have their permutations and they have
13:32all their numbers that put it together where the numbers and the production drop off.
13:38Coach Lance was listening, by the way.
13:39He said that he believes the one simple philosophy they have is end every drive and a kick.
13:46If you can't get a touchdown, then end it in the kick.
13:48Whether it be a punt or a field goal, just don't turn the ball over while they get things
13:51figured out defensively, which is what happened on Sunday against the Ravens.
13:55So, Coach Lance is right.
13:57Did they give Baltimore a short field at any point?
14:00Not.
14:01I don't know.
14:02I don't think so.
14:02Think of how huge that is, guys.
14:03Corey B'Horke is.
14:04Tyler Huntley.
14:05Now, Lamar Jackson, he's obviously going to be more capable.
14:07And they would have been in big trouble if Lamar had even, I know he's had some rough
14:11games against the Browns, also had some amazing performances.
14:15But Huntley, when you're going up against that caliber quarterback, and I would say the same
14:18thing this week, I know it's frustrating to see, like, the screenplay that they sniffed
14:25out, he just threw the ball into the ground, right?
14:27And while he is not a big throw the ball away guy, he also has actually gotten a little
14:32better protecting the ball when he goes down compared to earlier in the season where it
14:36looked like he was going to put the ball on the field a bunch of times.
14:41But those non-plays are also non-turnovers.
14:44And if you against Cam Ward could just pump the ball and pin them on their other side of
14:49the field, then is there any confidence that they're going to put up a bunch of points
14:54against this defense the way they're playing right now?
14:55I think, honestly, if you just don't turn the ball over against Tennessee, like, yeah,
14:58you might, it might be an ugly win, but it's still a win.
15:01And if your offense plays with any modicum of cohesion, I think you win that football
15:08game.
15:08I mean, I hate to give away what we're going to sell later on in the week, but, like,
15:11this is, I think it's a bigger game than the Ravens because, like, you've got to win
15:14this game.
15:15But that's exactly the point.
15:16They turned them over in the red zone.
15:18Well, in our red zone, right?
15:20And we were right there to go score.
15:22That game, they did nothing on offense, and then they got in a spot where they could score
15:26a touchdown and change the game.
15:27You turn them over on their half of the field, you put yourself in a good position, and then,
15:31yeah, I know that there was a shank in there, but you had two straight possessions where
15:36you have a Corey Bohorquez punt where Malachi Corley downs it within the five.
15:41I mean, that's huge stuff.
15:42So you're able to go out there, learn what you're learning on defense, you're able to
15:47diagnose, Tyler Huntley's not Lamar Jackson, okay, I'll grant everybody that, but you're
15:52able to diagnose them on defense, figure things out on defense, and you just give yourself
15:56time to where, yeah, 10-0 in the stands at halftime, kind of felt insurmountable, kind
16:02of felt like it was going to be a real big doing considering what we weren't doing offensively.
16:06But they went in there with some confidence thinking, okay, if we can do this, this, and
16:10this, we've made our adjustments and we can come back in this.
16:13And I wonder if Jesse Minter knew that too.
16:16I want to ask Ken Wyman about that coming up and around the AFC North.
16:19I still want to get to some more of you guys as well.
16:21Also, are we being disrespected?
16:25Ryan Scalabrini, I have a quote to read to you when we come back.
16:28And Lima saved an old woman yesterday.
16:31You think this guy is a major league bastard over here?
16:35I didn't take her marble rye, I promise that.
16:37Ken Carman, Anthony Lima, and all the marble rye stay with the old women.
16:42Coming up in five on The Fan.
