Tensions are escalating in Kyiv after a Russian drone strike damaged the city’s Northern Bridge, marking the second major bridge across the Dnipro River to come under attack in just days.

Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said the Saturday morning strike injured two people and damaged the bridge’s road surface and trolleybus cables. Traffic was temporarily blocked between the eastern and western sides of the city, adding further pressure to already crowded roads.

The attack follows repeated strikes on Kyiv’s Southern Bridge earlier this week. Russian officials claim the bridges are used to move Ukrainian troops and military supplies, while Ukrainian authorities warn that continued attacks could seriously disrupt transportation and critical infrastructure.

Experts say individual drone strikes are unlikely to destroy Kyiv’s major bridges, but repeated attacks could force prolonged closures and potentially weaken their structures. Authorities have reportedly discussed contingency plans involving ferries and temporary pontoon bridges if key crossings become unusable.

The strikes have raised fears that sustained attacks could effectively divide Kyiv, a city of roughly three million people.

The latest developments come amid continued Russian and Ukrainian attacks across several regions, with casualties and infrastructure damage reported on both sides.
