Caleb Williams found himself at the center of attention before the Chicago Bears faced the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football, despite being sidelined with a hamstring injury.
During the performance of the “Star-Spangled Banner,” Williams was shown on ESPN’s national broadcast casually pacing along the Bears’ sideline while players, coaches and others stood for the anthem.
Williams is currently recovering from a hamstring strain suffered during the Bears’ previous game against the Minnesota Vikings. Because of the injury, he was unable to play against Philadelphia and could potentially miss additional games.
His movement during the anthem quickly drew attention online, with some viewers criticizing the quarterback for appearing not to follow traditional national anthem protocol. Others viewed the moment as insignificant and saw no reason for controversy.
The incident has now added another talking point surrounding Williams, who is expected to remain sidelined until he recovers sufficiently to return to the field.
