00:00You're such a great historian.
00:03Why, because I'm old?
00:04Yeah.
00:05Okay.
00:07Have there been bad teams in the NFL before?
00:10Bad teams?
00:11Yeah.
00:12Bad teams.
00:13Bad teams.
00:14Like, yes.
00:16Like, some would say almost every year.
00:19Yes, and there have been some that have been historically bad,
00:23and I'm thinking about the Detroit Lions who went 0-16
00:26as a team that was historically bad,
00:30and I'm thinking about the Chip Kelly 49ers that were 2-14,
00:34which I don't know how they won two games that year.
00:37They were bad.
00:38So if there have been bad teams in the NFL before,
00:42then how come no team in the last 45 years
00:47has done what the 49ers have done through three games?
00:50Hasn't anybody else had a soft start to the schedule?
00:53I think so.
00:54What have they done that no one else has done?
00:57They scored a touchdown on 48% of their offensive drives,
01:00highest mark by any team in the first three games in 45 years.
01:05Only 48%?
01:07It feels like they've scored a touchdown on, I don't know, every drive?
01:10All of them.
01:11Right?
01:1248%.
01:12Yeah.
01:14Yeah.
01:14Next three closest teams.
01:16Let's see.
01:172023 Dolphins had that start.
01:202018 Chiefs, I believe they were good.
01:2220-07 Patriots, I believe they were good.
01:26Those are the next three in the last 45 years.
01:31Okay.
01:31I mean, 48%, it sounds like that's probably pretty good,
01:36although they haven't had a lot of drives because, you know,
01:38they don't really get the ball back that often.
01:41They allow the other team to have 14 and 15 play drives,
01:45and they end up getting field goals, and then you get the ball,
01:48and it's whoop, you score quick.
01:49Let's go to Jordan in Walnut Creek.
01:51Hi, Jordan.
01:51Thank you for calling.
01:52What you got?
01:54Yeah, thanks, Willard and Dibs.
01:56So, yeah, I wanted to comment when you were like,
01:59there's that eh thing with Brock,
02:01and I think you could kind of look at it the way Kyle Shanahan
02:06is now embraced by the fan base more than ever.
02:09Like, up until last season, there was still that something in the air
02:14about Kyle where fans weren't fully ready to say, like, yeah,
02:18this is our guy no matter what.
02:20And you'll probably never get there with a coach,
02:21but regardless of the two Super Bowl, like, appearances,
02:26it still felt like he wasn't fully there until last year
02:30because he outplayed or outcoached everything he was supposed to do.
02:35Like, he basically put on the cape, and the fans realized, like,
02:40oh, this guy is no joke.
02:41Like, this guy can win with anything.
02:43And that's how it is.
02:44Like, if you're an employee at a company,
02:46you don't really get that promotion until you, like,
02:48do more than you're supposed to do.
02:50So, and with Brock, it kind of feels like that same thing
02:53where he's doing it all,
02:55but he's kind of supposed to do it all in Kyle's system
02:59because historically, like, Jimmy G, Nick Mullins, Darnell,
03:04like, these guys aren't really supposed to be great quarterbacks
03:07or good quarterbacks in the NFL,
03:08and they all were with Kyle's system.
03:11And I'm not knocking Brock.
03:12He's definitely played the best out of any of them,
03:14but until he goes above the system when things really break down,
03:19there won't be that full embrace from 49ers fans.
03:23It just seems like in key moments,
03:25either he'll throw a ball directly at a defender,
03:28he'll give you two tugs and an interception
03:30and 250 yards in playoff games and stuff like that.
03:33But, like, I think until we see, like, oh, whoa,
03:37he just really put the team on his back,
03:39that full embrace won't fully be there.
03:41I'm not speaking for myself.
03:43I'm just trying to, like, kind of figure out why there is that eh with Brock.
03:47And that's what it is to me of, like, it's just that he has to kind of do
03:53something that's not even logical, and that's how sports are.
03:56They're not logical.
03:57They're emotional.
03:58So, like, I don't think you can really put a logical reason on why we have
04:03that eh with Brock.
04:04But to me, and he's getting as close as we've ever seen
04:07because usually quarterbacks plateau and then follow off historically
04:11with Kyle and the Niners.
04:12So, like, he's now kind of proven.
04:15And I noticed that week one when he threw the pick
04:17and then had the game of his life.
04:19Like, he didn't go hide.
04:20He, like, he went after it.
04:22He doubled down and got better.
04:24And that's now I'm kind of, like, feeling like, oh,
04:28he's about to take that next step now.
04:30So I think by week 12, Niners fans will see, like, okay,
04:34he could wear the cape.
04:35He's not going to be Josh Allen, but he can be that closest thing
04:38to a Josh Allen because imagine what Kyle would be
04:42if he had a Josh Allen or something like that.
04:44Like, we saw Josh Allen light us up, like, six years ago.
04:47Then we drafted Trey Lance the next year.
04:49Don't tell me that game didn't have a little thing to do with Kyle
04:52thinking, oh, what if I had this in the system?
04:54You might be right.
04:55They were looking for, you know, a plus athlete for sure.
04:59Jordan, I think you make some really good points.
05:01There's one thing that stands out in there, though,
05:04that always – we talked about this a couple of weeks ago,
05:08and I get it, and Jordan is right, but I really wish fans wouldn't do this.
05:14There's this – it's like y'all need a streaming service or something
05:17because what you're looking for is some sort of great story that doesn't exist.
05:23So everything around him went awful, but he put all of his teammates in a backpack
05:29and he put it on his back, and they carried them up eight mountains in a row.
05:34He put the whole team on his back, and he won the game by himself,
05:38and they all lived happily ever after with Super Bowl rings.
05:42It doesn't exist, and I don't know why I keep hearing people say that.
05:47And, Grandy, this is a – there's a little – just there's a blip on the radar of this
05:53in your point of wanting to watch Brock do this, that, or the other, quote-unquote, by himself.
06:00It doesn't exist.
06:02Even the people you think who have put teams on their back haven't put teams on their back.
06:08Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson sure haven't,
06:10and I would argue that Patrick Mahomes has always had all of the things
06:17that you sort of accuse Brock Purdy of having.
06:20Mahomes had Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelsey and an amazing defense run by Spagnuolo,
06:27which, by the way, was the better side of the ball when the Chiefs last won the Super Bowl.
06:32So I just – this storybook thing of they gathered everybody,
06:38and he took – he dragged them to the title by himself.
06:41I wish that would go away because it's not a thing.
06:44Well, it's not in the NFL, and you talk about, you know, 11 on 11,
06:48so the quarterback is going to, what, put everyone on his back,
06:52and that means that the offensive line never blocks anybody,
06:55and he's out there just running crazy and, you know, doing quarterback scrambles
06:59and getting all the yards by himself, and the running back does nothing,
07:02and the receivers do nothing.
07:03It doesn't work that way in football.
07:05And even if you do look at that offensively, well, the defense on the other side
07:10has to actually be somewhat decent, and if they're not going to be somewhat decent,
07:15then you're going to be like the Atlanta Falcons with a 28-3 lead
07:18where you go out there and you don't win that game
07:21because your defense couldn't stop Tom Brady.
07:23Let's go to Maori in Hayward.
07:26Hey, Maori, thanks for calling.
07:27What's up?
07:29Hey, what's up, Willard?
07:30What's up, dibs?
07:31Thank you, Willard, for your last point talking about – can you hear me?
07:35Yeah, we got you.
07:36Oh, yeah.
07:37Okay.
07:38All right, perfect.
07:39Can you say, yo, I didn't think you heard me.
07:40Thank you for your last point where you're talking about, you know,
07:43nobody is a one-man show.
07:45Football is an 11-man sport.
07:48People on offense, defense, and special teams.
07:50When it comes down to it, everybody has an assignment
07:53and they need to lock them into their job.
07:54It's a well-oiled machine.
07:55So, for Brock Purdy to be at his best, he needs his own line to give him time.
08:00He needs his receivers to create separation and also catch balls.
08:05So, I just wanted to come down Mark Brandy's road for saying that he needs
08:09Brock Purdy to basically prove something else to him this weekend
08:12against the Broncos, against a good defense, which I disagree with.
08:16I feel like Brock Purdy has proven time and time again with less and less,
08:21I mean, that he is our quarterback.
08:24Can we give him credit for what he's done?
08:26Why does he need to prove to 49ers Nation that he can succeed
08:30with wide receiver 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8?
08:33Brandon Cooks wasn't on the roster two weeks ago.
08:36Watkins, he wasn't even suiting up two weeks ago.
08:40Who else?
08:40Cowling, he couldn't see the field his first two years in the league.
08:43Debo Samuel didn't sign until the end of training camp
08:46or the beginning of training camp.
08:48So, why do we put all these expectations for Brock to exceed
08:52when he doesn't have weapons?
08:53I don't hear anybody ever talk about if Sam Donald didn't have Jackson Sip and Jigba.
08:59Like, man, if a quarterback has a great player like Mike Evans, feed him the ball.
09:04I expect Brock Purdy to overuse McCaffrey and Kittle this weekend.
09:08And I'm not going to say, oh, well, since he didn't throw the ball to Watkins and Cowling this weekend,
09:12I can't give him credit.
09:14No, he has to go to the people who are going to make the plays.
09:17If Cowling, if Watkins aren't open, then we're going to judge Brock Purdy saying,
09:21oh, well, why didn't he throw the ball?
09:23Because they didn't create separation.
09:25They're going against Patrick Sip and one of the best DBs in the game this Sunday.
09:29We expect wide receiver 4, 5, and 6 to create separation?
09:32I don't.
09:33I expect that side of the field to be absolutely shut down.
09:37So I just want us to give credit to Brock Purdy because I overly feel that he definitely deserves it.
09:44Thank you guys for your time.
09:45Have a great day.
09:48Yeah.
09:48Yeah.
09:50Take it, Boosh.
09:51You're taking, Willard.
09:53You're taking my opinion, and you're spitting it out to the masses in a way that it was not intended.
09:58I agree with everything they already said.
10:01You turned the mic on, and I said one thing.
10:03I said, is how I scripted that fair?
10:05And then you started using.
10:07Yes, and then you spoke for you.
10:10And then you started using words like, he still has to prove something.
10:13I never said that.
10:15I am eager to see Brock Purdy lead the Niners to a win versus a good defense down his best
10:23weapon.
10:23Because what are they going to say after that?
10:26Everything that this, it's like what Dibs brought up with Steph once he won finals MVP.
10:31What are they going to say now?
10:32You on Team Brock, I guess.
10:34Yes, of course I am.
10:35Wait, so did I hire you here at Brockistan?
10:40Yeah, you're paying me under the table, actually.
10:42I didn't know that you were actually part of it.
10:44This is not from a spot of, if I only believe in Brock, if he beats the Broncos, a good
10:50defense without Mike.
10:51This is just, okay, Brock, I believe you're a really good quarterback.
10:55Here's another chance to show it.
10:57As I have said now multiple times, there's just a teeny little bit of the, every time Brock does something,
11:04we're like, okay, now do it upside down.
11:07And then I'll think you're awesome.
11:09There's just a little teeny bit.
