Willard and Dibs react to what Grandi wants to see from Brock Purdy and the 49ers on Sunday vs. the Broncos and debate if that means Grandi still doesn't believe in Purdy.
Transcript
00:00Do you remember who his first career start?
00:04Do you remember who the other quarterback was?
00:06It was some fly-by-night, late-round, never-did-nothing-for-nobody-bum.
00:14He's the gamote.
00:15Oh, it was Tom Brady.
00:16Tom Brady on Fox.
00:18We got a new team in the top spot.
00:20Yeah, and you know what?
00:21They were pretty much unheralded all the way through the offseason
00:23because everyone was talking about Seattle and the Rams,
00:26but it's the 49ers at number one.
00:28Why? They're undefeated.
00:30Yeah, we know that, but they have the best point differential in the league.
00:33Brock Purdy's playing as well as anybody.
00:35Should be considered in the Tier 1 QB discussions.
00:37At least he is in my eyes.
00:38Playing within the system, throwing the ball accurately,
00:41no negative plays, getting his team in and out of the right plays.
00:44I love the way that he's managing every single game.
00:46Oof, that's a boom.
00:49When you get Tom Brady to sit down and talk about you that way,
00:53that had to feel like a warm fuzzy to Brock.
00:56I'm sure it was awesome.
00:57I mean, Tom said everything, but he kind of looks like I did at my best.
01:03Because if you think about Tom Brady at his best, it was in the pocket,
01:08look, look, look, boom, boom, boom.
01:10Like, you know, no wasted motion.
01:12I think Brock runs better than Tom.
01:14I don't know if Tom throws a better deep ball than Brock.
01:16I don't remember Tom throwing a ton of deep balls, but Tom was the king of,
01:21okay, I know what you're doing, and I know what we're going to do,
01:24and it's going to work.
01:25So just watch me.
01:26Watch me go.
01:27I think the biggest thing for Brock Purdy and why the public is finally,
01:33like, all seemingly, for the most part, coming around on his play,
01:37the numbers and the wins, and sure, there's all that.
01:41But have you noticed over the last three weeks how many quarterbacks talk about Brock?
01:47Tom Brady, Kurt Warner, Dan Orlovsky, Chase Daniel.
01:53Who am I missing?
01:55The quarterback portion of the media is just, they're smitten.
02:03Smitten right now with the way he's playing football.
02:06And that's pretty hard to argue.
02:08You know, all of us with nacho stains on our shirts while we're watching,
02:12and we're like, I don't know.
02:13I don't know about this guy.
02:15Can't see over the line.
02:17Like, I don't know.
02:20I don't know what to see.
02:21Like, the quarterbacks are smitten with this quarterback.
02:25Right.
02:25They're gushing because what they see is exactly what we all see,
02:29but they're seeing it in a higher level as far as, like, okay,
02:33he's thrown one pick, and he's been sacked zero times.
02:37And through two games, he had an 80% completion percentage,
02:39and he's thrown nine touchdowns, which is tied for first in the league,
02:43and they're 3-0.
02:44So it's hard to not, even at our rudimentary level,
02:48it's hard to not look at it and go, yeah, he's playing great,
02:50he's playing awesome, but when the quarterbacks,
02:53who actually break it down and see it like he sees it,
02:56when they say those things, it has obviously more weight.
02:59We want to go to the phones, but, Grandy, do you want to hop on real quick
03:03and explain the text of why there was a piece of you,
03:07and I think you're going to get your wish, it sounds like,
03:09Brandon Cook's being called up,
03:11certainly suggests that Mike Evans is not going to play.
03:14He worked on the side, but quote-unquote gingerly today.
03:17I don't think that Mike Evans is going to play,
03:20and you had made the comment that a piece of you is looking forward
03:24to seeing the 49ers play without Mike Evans.
03:27Yeah, because I want to see Brock Purdy go against a good defense
03:32in the Broncos' defense, maybe not as good as we thought they were going to be.
03:35They're certainly more talented than the Cardinals and the Dolphins
03:38the last couple of weeks, and do that without a great receiver in Mike Evans,
03:43and listening to Greg Cosell, you can play the sound in a little bit,
03:46talk about what Mike Evans means to the offense and how he changes things.
03:49I'm curious to see Brock Purdy playing at an MVP level
03:52can maybe elevate the guys around you and still put together
03:57a really good offensive performance against a good defense
03:59without your best weapon.
04:02I know the way you took that was you don't really, you know,
04:05maybe fully believe that this is who Brock is.
04:07I just want to see him against a bigger challenge,
04:09and I'm excited to see him show that he can do it in this kind of challenge.
04:12I have mixed feelings about this, because yes, I totally hear what you're saying.
04:18The other piece of me, though, goes, it sounds to me on some level
04:23like you are still waiting for Brock Purdy to prove something to you.
04:31I don't ask for Joe Burrows, like, okay, Joe, but do it without Jamar and T,
04:38and then you're good.
04:40I don't, that's not totally where you're coming from, Grandy.
04:43I'm not saying, like, have a bad game and I think you're bad.
04:45I'm just like, this is the biggest challenge, I think, for Brock of the season,
04:49because against the Rams, you had a fully healthy complement of wide receivers.
04:53And show it. I'm excited to see it.
04:55I get it. I get it.
04:56But there's also, there's a little, there's a little of that thing in there,
05:01which is like, okay.
05:03Show me. A little bit of the show me.
05:04And we do this to Brock.
05:05We've been doing it for four years.
05:07Savers. Oh, that? Okay, now do this.
05:10Oh, you went to the Super Bowl? Okay.
05:12Oh, you went to the NFC title game? Now go to the Super Bowl.
05:15Oh, you went to the Super Bowl? Wait a minute, now you have to win it.
05:17Oh, wait a minute.
05:19Oh, you can come from ahead?
05:21And now come from behind.
05:22Can you do it on your left leg?
05:23Can you do it on your right leg?
05:25Can you do it without your receivers?
05:26Can you do it without your line?
05:27Can you do it without a running back?
05:28Can you do it without a coach?
05:29Can you? Can you?
05:31It's a little bit like Steph Curry to me.
05:34When is this going to end?
05:35Well, and for Steph, and this is a little bit of a contrived example,
05:40but they win the NBA title and Iguodala's the MVP.
05:43Then you lose it.
05:44Then you get KD.
05:45And it's like, okay, you needed KD to win two.
05:47And then you go out there and you have the COVID year and they struggle
05:51and they blow draft picks.
05:52And then 2022, they go out there, they win the damn thing.
05:56And he is the finals MVP.
05:58So at that point, it was like, okay, Steph, welcome to the Last Supper painting
06:03of the top 12 players of all time.
06:06So like before that, was Steph awesome?
06:08Yes, he was.
06:09But until he won one without KD and when he was actually the MVP
06:14and he put up 50 against Boston, I think at that moment,
06:18and Brock's not at this level,
06:19but I do think that there's a certain amount of like the haterade of,
06:23all right, Steph, you've won one.
06:25You won three, but it was only because of KD.
06:28Like, show me one where you win it, where you're the dude.
06:31And then he showed you that he won one when he's the dude.
06:34And now it's like, okay, okay, you're that guy.
06:37I like your comp because it's a reach though, because Brock is not Steph.
06:42It's on a different planet, but the planet was,
06:44it's like we all knew Steph was minted and awesome.
06:47But as soon as he won the fourth one and was the finals MVP,
06:50that's when you started to hear people go,
06:52oh, he might be one of the top 10 players of all time.
06:55Yeah.
06:55Like in order to get to that level.
06:58But yeah, there's just, I've always sensed that.
07:01There's a piece of that.
07:02Anything Brock will do, you're like, okay, all right,
07:05but could you do it with your helmet on backwards?
07:08Can you be that awesome?
07:10It's just like, I don't know.
07:11When are we going to just settle with like,
07:13you got a great quarterback here.
07:15I'm thinking about the year where he was like on the short list for MVP.
07:20And then he went and played Lamar Jackson in Baltimore,
07:24Mike McDonald, defensive coordinator on Christmas.
07:26And so whenever anybody wants to like defame Brock Purdy,
07:31you go back to that game, that game, that game,
07:33because forget what led up to it.
07:36And what led up to it was this guy was probably maybe going to be the MVP
07:40of the league.
07:41And he had one bad night, one really bad night.
07:44They had a bad night.
07:46He threw four picks.
07:47He got pulled.
07:48So if you want to like look at Brock Purdy and like disrespect his career,
07:52we all go back to that one.
07:53There you go.
07:54How many starts in are we now?
07:55How many starts?
07:5652.
07:58But that was him.
08:00That was Brock.
08:01The other ones don't care.
08:02No, forget the lead up to where if he would have gone out and had a normal Brock game,
08:06he probably wins the MVP.
08:08And I know that they beat the Superbowl favorites like a drum,
08:10but that didn't count because we said so.
08:14Well, it didn't count because they flew out their last minute.
08:16Right.
08:17So nevermind.
08:18No.
08:19Play a good team.
08:23And I do kind of like what Grandy was saying.
08:25Okay.
08:26I like what Grandy said to the extent that, okay,
08:29so if you don't have Mike Evans and you don't have Demarcus Robinson,
08:33and so now you're going to have Debo Samuel and like Jordan Watkins and Brandon Cooks,
08:39who just signed off the street.
08:41You're going to have other people who are going to be running routes,
08:44but to me,
08:45this game becomes more about Shanahan than it does about Brock Purdy,
08:48because Denver's not great against the run.
08:51So you might see a game where they try to win this thing like 16 to 11 or 19 to
08:5717.
08:58Maybe.
08:58I think that that's one matchup to watch.
09:01Denver's really good at rushing the quarterback.
09:04And the Niners are really good at not letting their quarterback get touched.
09:08So that's also,
09:09that's another matchup here.
09:10No sacks against the Niners this year,
09:13but Denver led the league in sacks the last two consecutive seasons.
09:17So there are a lot of those matchups and it's a chess match.
09:19Once I'm with you,
