00:39sure the line and the quarterback both get some credit but when you see that what does that tell
00:45you about the way an offense is operating oh it tells me one your coaching staff understands what
00:51the issues are they understand what the problems are and you know sacks really become more to me
00:57of a play caller statistic and a quarterback statistic than they are an offensive line statistic
01:03so when you are good at not giving up sacks in today's game different it's changed since i played
01:11where there was a bunch of seven step drops and there was a bunch of you know long uh you
01:16know
01:16long kind of drawn out plays and the quarterback was deep in the pocket and it wasn't you know i
01:20mean
01:21my first six years in the league we didn't play out of shotgun ever not one time and so you

01:26it's different now there's so much east and west game you know it's said the quick game the bubble
01:32screens all those different things that are part of the game now but that tells me a coaching staff
01:37really understands what the issues are and then you've got a quarterback that keeps you out of
01:43harm's way um and and i've said this many many times and i've called brock purdy you know a top
01:4810 top
01:49five type quarterback and you know i get some pushback on that but when you start looking at
01:55brock purdy and his ability to process information and what he did sunday was absolutely like ridiculous
02:02but his processing skill level is that of i compare him to joe burrow i think they those two guys

02:10information um and get you know from one concept to the other from going to the front side to instantly
02:17eliminating the front side based on you know based on not only the the look they get but the movement
02:23keys they get um it's incredible it's absolutely incredible what they're able to accomplish how much
02:29of that is a derivative of the fact that they've been staying ahead of the sticks all year they have
02:33one negative play on first down through two games how much does that help a quarterback like brock be
02:39able to keep the defense off balance it's huge um you know when you don't have negative plays when you
02:46don't all of a sudden become second down and 12 and you're not forced to to be in passing situations
02:54when you leave your offense open uh and a defense has to play you honest now they have to bite
03:00on every
03:00play action now they have to bite on you know everything you do and they have to be able to
03:05play those
03:05things honestly so you know when you're in in second down and medium when you're in second down and
03:11six minus um the entirety of the playbook is open to you you're not afraid to run the ball and
03:16get
03:16into third down in short situations i then they have to play you honestly and that becomes one of
03:22those things where you as an offense are dictating and uh not being dictated to mark slareth is with

03:41quarterback uh texted me something earlier today and i want to run this comment by you we're kind of
03:47talking about purdy and niner football and he says hey enjoy all of those games where you've always got
03:53the lead and it to me there was something kind of poke poke poking about it as if and and

04:01right quarterbacking is a hell of a lot easier when you've got the lead now you've got to be a
04:07part
04:07of going out there to get that lead but how would you sort of describe the difference for a quarterback
04:14um when you've got the lead versus one of these guys that's got to constantly be coming from behind
04:19in the second half well i mean obviously it it speaks to how good your coaching staff is how good
04:27your football team is um you know all those different things and um that sounds like a guy
04:33who uh played on crappy teams and never like never raised the level i mean i don't know who that
04:39quarterback is can confirm but yeah but you know i mean hey that sucks for you we've got a good

04:46this is how we operate and so you know i'm not going to make excuses i'm telling you and i
04:52already told
04:53you i think brock purdy processes information as well like i think he's one of the top five
04:58processors in football at the quarterback position and so he has a lot to do with them playing from the
05:04lead you know he has a lot to do with them operating on a high and a very efficient level
05:10so um i'm not
05:12going to apologize for that i'm not going to be upset about it i mean when you have that as
05:16an offense
05:16you're going to be pretty good and good for the niners and you know and kyle and and that offensive
05:22staff they've done a great job and um and they've done it with come on like it's not like they've
05:28got
05:28besides trent williams um you know i mean who can you even name if you're not a diehard niner fan

05:35can you even name on that offensive line there are no superstars in that group but yet they just
05:41continue to produce and and the scheme does a lot of that the coaching does a lot of that and
05:46so
05:46um they're a damn good football team they deserve to play with the lead touchdowns on their first
05:51five drives against miami what's that like as an offensive lineman when you're humming and like you
05:57said first and ten becomes second and three becomes another first down how much does that just feed into
06:03the confidence of an o-line oh it's that that stuff is huge and it's so fun when you're operating
06:10that
06:10way and um and then you see the frustration of the defense and them not being able to get off
06:16the
06:16field you know and and so that's always one of those things that's that's awesome but then you
06:22just have so much confidence in your play caller you know and and i tell you one of the things
06:26and
06:27obviously i played for kyle's dad mike and there were situations and i know they talk about
06:32quarterbacks and and play callers being on the same page you know and really having a vibe for one
06:37another but there were situations where i'd be in the huddle and i'd be like one of three plays is
06:42coming in right now one of three plays like that like you just know and you have such a great
06:48feel
06:48for what your play caller is going to call and the situation that they are going to put you in
06:53and when that is the case when you are humming like that man it is just one of those situations
06:59where
06:59you're like there is nothing we can't do and there's nothing this defense can do about it um we're just
07:05going to shove it down their throats and that is to me that is one of the great feelings uh
07:10regardless of you know not just in football just one of the great feelings in life
07:14stink at the risk of falling into the whole process we all do now which is ranking things
07:20um in in sports but but let let's talk a little bit about kyle shanahan well what what do you
07:27think
07:27about him versus his peers out there where where where do you see him
07:34i see kyle is one of the top probably three coaches in football i think mcdonald is working
07:40his way in there i think sean mcveigh is in there and then you know i think kyle is right
07:45there
07:45um with those guys and um you know he's he's incredible and i think the biggest thing that i
07:53have found with great coaches and obviously i have a relationship with the family and a relationship
07:58you know more with mike than i do with kyle but i have a relationship with kyle as well
08:02um but he has adopted a lot of his dad's philosophies and one of those philosophies is
08:10understanding everybody's issues understanding everybody's um problems if you will and that becomes
08:18such an important aspect of coaching like you're an offensive coach but you got to understand
08:23you know the problems we have up front on the offensive line so you have to be
08:28you know you have to have a an in-depth knowledge of what we do and like we are a
08:34secret mushroom
08:34society so oftentimes nobody knows what we're doing but that that becomes very imperative you've got to
08:40know that you got to know the problems that the receivers have you got to know the problems of
08:43tight ends the fullbacks the running backs have you got to know the problems that defensive players have
08:47and and you've got to coach that way so um that's the guy that just completely is locked in
08:53and honed in and tuned in to what everybody's issues within that whole organization are and i think
08:58that's one of the just the beauties and and and why you know kyle has been so successful
09:03it's interesting you say that about defense because somebody came on our show before and said
09:08kyle puts the defense in an uncomfortable spot and it's really turmoil is it not only the pre-snap
09:14movement but just the play design that gets it so that defenses don't really know what's coming
09:20yeah i mean and knows he knows the rules he knows the leverage assignments he knows what they're
09:26going to do so he can put you in a position to really you know to really challenge your rules
09:32and
09:32challenge your knowledge of the game and um and again like i mean the the coaching and the
09:38understanding of what a team's going to do how they're going to react to certain formations and
09:44certain things i mean i have i've seen his dad do this i've seen kyle do this where they'll get
09:49into a situation where they go oh hey man we're gonna get into this we're gonna run these three
09:53plays um they're not really worth a crap but we're gonna run them anyhow and what we're gonna get when
09:58we get back into this formation in the second quarter we're gonna get this look and they're gonna
10:02play this defense this structure this coverage and we're gonna run this play action on them and
10:08kittle you're gonna get a touchdown on this for 30 40 yards and then uh and then we're gonna get
10:13that and do it out of a different a little bit different you know scenario and and you know and
10:18and mike evans you're gonna get a touchdown and then i mean it's like it's like a you know an
10:22episode of oprah's christmas show you know you get a touchdown you get a touchdown you get a touchdown
10:26you get a touchdown they're just giving out touchdowns and so you know and kyle like kyle does that his
10:32father used to do that constantly you're like oh we got him like we're gonna get in this we're gonna
10:37run
10:37this we're gonna get these guys you know they're gonna play this and this is gonna be a touchdown
10:42and sure enough i mean you just watch it unfold and it was exactly the way you said it was
10:49and
10:50like we did it in two super bowls we didn't super bowl 32 they're like hey man they're gonna play
10:54this when we get in this formation they're gonna play this defense they're gonna switch positions
10:58between the weak side linebacker and the safety and we're gonna leave the weak side linebacker to
11:02the slot receiver he's gonna take him we're gonna scoop up to that safety we're gonna hit him in the
11:06mouth and we're gonna get 15 yards on a cutback and about the third play of the game it's exactly
11:11what happened i cut through hit uh leroy butler right in the teeth td cuts behind me for 15 yards
11:17i walked back to huddle and i told gary zimmerman we are absolutely gonna gut these fools and you know
11:23we had 200 yards rushing later like i mean you know and at that point we're 13 point underdogs and
11:30oh that biggest defensive line in football versus the smallest offensive line of football you know
11:35the devon bronx if you get their ass kicked yeah my ass like like and that's the kind of stuff
11:40that
11:40we used to do on a consistent basis and kyle certainly has adopted that from his father uh stink
11:46when you're talking like this it reminds me of something fred warner said after the game he's
11:50trying to do it without sort of dismissing the talents of of the offensive weapons but when kyle
11:57is in his play calling bag and when brock is processing and delivering the way he is how much
12:04does it matter who the skill position guys are yeah well i mean you've seen i mean the fact that
12:12they
12:12won 12 games last year i would like that that tells you listen man you always want receivers and
12:20running backs that can play and guys that you know make up for a multitude of sins um but you
12:27know
12:28heck i like i look at i look at mike shanahan and the running backs that he rolled through you
12:34know
12:35they got a thousand yards it was terrell davis terrell blows out his knee orlando scary comes in
12:40he gets 1200 yards the next year mike anderson comes in he gets 1400 yards clinton portis 1500 yards
12:46uh reuben drones you know 1200 yards i mean you put anybody in right any any running back now you
12:54know guys like christian mcafree and guys like you know terrell davis back in the day they would make
12:59up for a multitude of sins trust me you know where one guy would get 1400 yards td would have
13:052100 yards
13:06like that's where the difference is but you're still going to be freaking productive you're still going
13:11to be really really good and then when you put talent like mike evans in there you put some of
13:16that talent around them um then all of a sudden it completely unlocks the offense and now they've
13:22got kaylon black their rookie drafted running back third rounder who's in there and it's not a timeshare
13:28by the way by the way how good is that kid and how much grief did john lynch and kyle
13:36shanahan take
13:37for drafting him i remember you know i was doing my draft study and so that was uh that was
13:42a big
13:43controversy so i went back and watched that kid in indiana and uh i was like damn this kid can
13:49play
13:49like this kid is good and um and it's so funny to me because you know you follow the draft
13:55nicks and a
13:55lot of the draft nicks don't know you know jack um but they'll tell you you know they'll tell you
14:00this guy's a can't miss proposition and then you start studying some of these guys and you're like
14:05why did this guy slip like this guy's got every tool that there is you know and maybe he didn't
14:11run
14:11a fast enough 40 uh whoop-de-doo i don't like that stuff doesn't matter to me the nfl didn't
14:19even
14:19they didn't even invite him to the combine there was no 40 right yeah yeah you know what i mean

14:26ran a 40 at somebody else's this is how i got in the nfl i didn't get invited to combine
14:30i showed up
14:31to other people's workouts and begged to work out that's how i that's how i got in the nfl i
14:37showed up
14:38to other dudes workouts and said hey man can i also work out you know and they're like yeah
14:44whatever and then you you run around you're bench pressing you're doing all that stuff and they're
14:47going oh maybe the kid can play you know let's go look at his film so um there's so much
14:52guard you
14:53know we get so into height speed weight uh we get into so many things other than what the film
14:58says
14:58what does the film say um there are some guys who don't run good 40s but on the football field
15:03people
15:03just can't catch them there are guys that don't have that you know that don't have that that they
15:08don't look powerful they don't look uh you know they don't like deon dockins you know from buffalo
15:14bills has a that's a bad body at left tackle dude's a freaking phenomenal football player and oh by the
15:20way i mean i fangirl over trent williams all the time it's just it's disgusting um how much i love
15:27that
15:27dude but that dude's movement skills and power at the age he's at is from he's just not even from
15:35this planet it's just it's scary to watch that dude move it you know what is he 62 years old
15:41now
15:42uh i mean it's just unreal unreal um sync the other big thing going on today everyone's talking about
15:50injuries again and especially at the quarterback position i'm counting up uh seven nfc
15:56quarterback injuries alone uh but it's not just that position do you have a take on this what do
16:02you what do you see in what feels like a lot more key position injuries in just two weeks
16:09yeah well i mean you know we uh live so much in our fears about injuries during the preseason we
16:17don't play anybody and nobody's actually ready to play week one um and you know i mean that's the
16:23world we live in right now because we have created this situation where you know there's 15 guys on
16:30your team that make 80 of the money and the you know the the other 80 of the guys share
16:3620 of the
16:36money and so what ends up happening is you have a bunch of dudes on your roster that aren't with
16:42a
16:42score to piss and god forbid anybody gets hurt because those guys can't play and they probably
16:49shouldn't be in the league and ultimately got to keep a bunch of those dudes because the way we've
16:53structured the salary cap and it's an unfortunate situation so nobody gets to play in the preseason
16:59and the only way you get in shape to play is by playing and the only way you truly start
17:05to feel the
17:06you know the kinesthetic awareness and and what it's like to push against the guy and pull against
17:11the guy and have that leverage stuff is in games and you don't get it in practice either
17:16and so it's i mean not to the level that you get it when you're playing a game and the
17:21fact that
17:21nobody plays in the games in preseason and then you know we're probably going to go to 18 games we're
17:28probably going to eliminate another preseason game and you know it's just going to get it's just going
17:33to continue and i don't know what the statistics say about the injuries in this league but i guarantee
17:39you this from the eyeball test there are far more season ending injuries the key players
17:46in today's game than there ever were in my day and we i mean we used to beat the living
17:52piss out of
17:53one another in practice and in preseason games um and it's completely different so you know i do believe
17:59there's a there's something to building up a callus i do believe there's something to to actually
18:04playing in the games and actually practicing in pads as opposed to uh you know playing patty cake
18:10and shorts and t-shirts and um and i do believe it adds to the fact that we watch superstars
18:16in this
18:16league every week uh you know get hurt and and guys are going to miss seasons and you mentioned all
18:22the quarterbacks out and here the niners sit with mac jones as a backup should they be possibly
18:27interested in trading him or do they need to keep him as an insurance policy no i don't know uh
18:33listen man that's another thing that kills me people are like why would you keep three quarterbacks on
18:39your roster why would you like and i'm like are you serious like why would you keep it because you
18:45need it and the fact that one of the one of the things that blows me away is how many
18:50how many teams
18:52don't keep a viable backup quarterback a guy that can actually play they go into the season with rusty
18:59gutful playing backup i mean think about what think about what the atlanta falcons have done
19:04like that's malfeasance organizational malfeasance malfeasance at the quarterback position so they
19:10sign kirk cousins coming off an achilles tendon injury and then they decide you know what's a good
19:15idea let's sign the most injured quarterback in the history of college football to be uh and let's
19:22let's draft that guy in the first round but then that and then that guy ends up playing and getting
19:27hurt who would have saw that coming right and then all of a sudden you go okay now that kirk
19:32cousins is
19:32gone thank the lord playing for the raiders and playing well let's go ahead and to back up our
19:38quarterback who can't stay healthy who's off at acl his 17th in his career let's go get tua who's one
19:46hard sneeze away from being concussed for you know eight weeks like like what are the atlanta falcons doing
19:54cooper rush oh there that that's got to give you i mean you like you as a coaching staff you

20:02have a game plan like well listen we can put a game plan together but cooper rush is gonna go

20:06there and operate it so like there's we got no chance i mean you want to talk about miserable
20:11oh it's an elaborate way for them to draft another quarterback next year mark
20:17sure and they'll find another dude that can't play good for them it's gonna be awesome um stink
