Willard and Dibs discuss where Brock Purdy falls in the quarterback rankings. Is it just Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow in some order ... and then Brock Purdy?

00:00I want to try something here.
00:02I don't know how it's going to go.
00:05But, um, I don't even know where you're going to stand on this.
00:10I'll let you know.
00:11I don't even know what you're about to do.
00:13I know you don't.
00:15Okay.
00:17If I give you the big four.
00:19You're talking about Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and, uh, Josh Burrow?
00:26Josh Burrow?
00:27Lamar Jackson.
00:28And Joe Burrow.
00:29And Joe Burrow.
00:30Not Josh Burrow?
00:31Not Josh Burrow.
00:32Is that his little brother?
00:33You're going to give me the big four?
00:33That's fine.
00:34Don't you think that's the big four?
00:35Yeah.
00:36Mahomes.
00:37Yep.
00:37Allen.
00:39Lamar.
00:40Burrow.
00:41Okay.
00:42All right.
00:43Make the case for someone else.
00:44Well, Matthew Stafford.
00:45Why?
00:4630, 38 years old?
00:48It doesn't matter.
00:49He's, I mean, still very, very good in the cases that, you know, he looked bad against
00:55the 49ers and he looked better last week and he probably won't have Puka Nakua this week
01:00and so he's doing it with lesser weapons and we all can excuse that when other quarterbacks
01:05play badly.
01:06I mean, Brock Purdy, you're saying Brock Purdy's not missing wide receivers?
01:09Good Lord.
01:09I'm saying the weapons that he has right now are better than what the Rams have.
01:13That's what I'm saying.
01:14Okay.
01:15Okay.
01:16Then you can make that case.
01:18You can make that case.
01:19I don't even know what case I'm making.
01:21You're trying to say that Brock Purdy's the fifth best quarterback in football.
01:24Well, I've kind of grown tired of the, just the ranking of quarterbacks because they're
01:29not all playing the same game.
01:31They're like for reasons you just mentioned.
01:35Um, you've got different coaches, different teammates, different schedules, different schemes,
01:40right?
01:40Like I, you know, I'm not, you know how I look at it.
01:44Um, what I remove from the conversation.
01:47Once I know a quarterback is good, I don't do the, well, Matt's got a Superbowl and Brock
01:53doesn't, which is lame because three of the big four that we all just completely decide
01:59are the four best, no matter what, three of them don't have a Superbowl either.
02:02And two of them haven't even been to one.
02:05Okay.
02:06Yeah.
02:06So I remove that.
02:08That doesn't move my needle.
02:09If you've never moved through the playoffs at all.
02:12Okay.
02:13That's a different conversation, Jordan Love, but Dak Prescott, but if you are consistently
02:21good, you're consistently there, you move through the playoffs.
02:25We've seen you do it at home.
02:26We've seen you do it on the road.
02:28We've seen you win the game.
02:29You're supposed to win.
02:29We've seen you win the game that you weren't supposed to win.
02:31When we start seeing all of those things and you see it year in and year out, I'm like,
02:35all right, you're over here.
02:37You're over here in this really, really good category.
02:42But for me, if I ask it in such a way of like, who would you want as the 49ers
02:49quarterback?
02:49I do, I do say Purdy over Stafford because Stafford's 38 and Purdy is 26 and Purdy can move and
02:59Stafford
02:59can and Stafford is great.
03:01Don't get me wrong, but Brock Purdy is showing you what he can do as well, has been showing
03:07you what he can do.
03:08So this isn't so much of a ranking other than this.
03:13If I say take away those four, make the case that someone else in the NFL would be a better
03:2349er quarterback.
03:24Make the case that you would rather have any of the other QBs in the league.
03:30You'd rather have them over Brock Purdy.
03:33And if you want to say Matt Stafford, that's obviously not a crazy answer, but my answer
03:38would be what Jim Harbaugh used to yell in the locker room.
03:44No body.
03:46That, that would be my answer.
03:48And we're doing this in the context of you get Shanahan, right?
03:53So you're Shanahan's here and you put whatever quarterback.
03:57In this case, the Matt Stafford piece is probably not a great fit because of what Brock Purdy does.
04:03Brock Purdy is a lot of movement, movement fakes, play action, boots, naked boots, etc.
04:10That is not what Matt Stafford does.
04:12Matt Stafford is a get the ball, get in the pocket and deliver a very accurate on-time throw.
04:18So if you're having the Shanahan system, you're not going to be able to run it as effectively
04:22with Matthew Stafford.
04:23Somebody just, thank you, 408 just texted in and Grandy was probably, in fact, maybe this is your number.
04:29Did you just text the show, Mark Grandy?
04:32Hey, Willard, are you still taking Herbert over Brock?
04:36No, that was a crappy take.
04:38That was a crappy take by me.
04:40No.
04:41No, I'm not taking Justin Herbert over Brock Purdy.
04:44That was a bad take that day when I said that.
04:48Bad take?
04:49No.
04:50Not even close.
04:52Did you get all that, Grandy?
04:52That was about five bad takes by me.
04:55Just making sure we can have that.
04:57I got it.
04:58I'm looking at Nick Shook of NFL.com.
05:03Nick Shook.
05:04Oh, okay, Nick.
05:05What do we got?
05:05Well, he recently did his NFL power rankings as of week three.
05:10I think he had the 49ers eighth on his list.
05:13So that kind of shook, irked me a little with that.
05:16But he's got his QB rankings as of week three.
05:20And it goes Allen, Mahomes, Purdy, followed by Prescott, Stafford, and Goff.
05:25Wow.
05:26Wait, whoa.
05:26So he put them.
05:27I didn't hear Burrow or Jackson in that entire list.
05:30This is just through week two.
05:31Okay.
05:31I don't think that he's looking at the totality of a certain quarterback's work, but those
05:36are your tier one quarterbacks.
05:38Jared Goff wraps up tier one in the sixth spot, and then you get to Burrow at seven,
05:43Lamar at eight.
05:44Okay.
05:44So he's given flowers to Brock Purdy as his third power-ranked quarterback right now.
05:50I was going to say, that sounds like power rankings that you're just firing off based
05:54on just these two weeks is kind of what that sounds like.
05:59Yes, and Purdy's up from number eight to number three.
06:02Yeah, I get it.
06:03But again, everybody can have their quarterback rankings.
06:08You can do this kind of however you want, but that was my thought process.
06:13I feel like right now is the perfect time to finally have this discussion.
06:18I'd love to hear someone make the case as to if I remove the big four, who out there would
06:26you rather have quarterbacking the San Francisco 49ers over Brock Purdy?
06:33And I just scanned the entire board, and my answer's no one.
06:38That's my answer.
06:39Well, as we're backing off of previous takes, last year I took a lot of flack for saying
06:44I would take Trevor Lawrence over Brock Purdy.
06:46And how do you feel now?
06:47I still feel like it's closer than what people think, but based on the way the 49ers are
06:54running their offense, the way Brock Purdy is avoiding sacks, and if you want to go back
06:59and look at all of Brock Purdy's dropbacks, it was not a clean pocket every time.
07:03The offensive line had a few plays where Brock got pressured.
07:07There was blitzes.
07:09Brock Purdy climbed the pocket.
07:10He evaded the pass rush.
07:12He had a pump fake, the one you talked about to Mike Evans.
07:14So the reason why they have no sacks on the year, the biggest reason is the quarterback.
07:19And I'm trying to remember who told us that, if it was Mark Schlereth or if it was Greg
07:23Cosell, but 90% of the sacks are on the quarterback.
07:28So the fact that they only have zero sacks, a lot of that is Brock Purdy avoiding the pressure.
07:32And so right now, after these two games, yeah, I'll go ahead and flip my take.
07:37You flipped yours.
07:38I love Trevor Lawrence, and I think he's going to have a great year with Liam Cohen, but I don't
07:43think that he fits this system is similar to Matt Stafford.
07:46It's a lot of quarterbacks out there I like.
07:48Yeah, I really like Trevor Lawrence.
07:50I think Trevor Lawrence is excellent.
07:52I still, I am not on the train of let's never talk about Justin Herbert ever again.
07:57I don't, I don't think that.
07:59Jalen Hurts is like his name should be in this conversation.
08:04He's a really good player.
08:05Um, Dak Prescott is, is the butt of, of many jokes, but, but, uh, but he, he obviously
08:11can sling it.
08:12Um, Drake May was number two in the MVP race, I think last year.
08:16Now I think that, you know, Drake's going to have some, I think he's going to go backwards
08:21a little bit.
08:21Boop, boop, boop.
08:22Like I think that's going to happen this year.
08:24Um, but that's okay.
08:25I still, I still like him.
08:27Um, and, and, and there are, there are others, you know, I'm, I'm interested to see where
08:32Bo Nix's career goes next and, and Sam Darnold at least deserves a little bit of, Hey, how
08:38you doing?
08:38You won the Superbowl last year.
08:40He's a good player.
08:41There's a lot.
08:42And by the way, we should mention Caleb Williams, because if he hadn't gotten hurt this week,
08:47I think a lot of people would have, that might've been some people's answer as to who you want
08:52next, because he is very dynamic.
08:56Nick shook had him at a number two after week one.
08:59And now he's down to number 16.
09:01Wow.
09:01And he does, that's kind of, see, now that's funny to me.
09:04I at least respect the transparency with the rankings, which is we're taking it week by
09:09week.
09:09And so, I mean, you got hurt.
09:11You're going against the Brian Flores defense in the rain, right?
09:14And you scored three points.
09:15You're going to go down and they scored three points.
09:17Half the league.
09:1714 notches, but at least it's, it's not like, you know what, we're going to move you down
09:21three spots pending this and that it is real time, like instant reaction rankings.
09:27If Brock Purdy goes out and throws three picks against Arizona, even if they win, he'll go
09:32from number three to probably number 12.
09:34Yeah, but that's fine.
09:35Yeah, that's fine.
09:35You can do your rankings however you want to do them.
09:37No, no, no doubt.
09:38Um, but I, by the way, there's nothing that could happen against Arizona this weekend
09:43that would make me change the take I'm giving you right now.
09:46Nothing could happen this weekend that would make me say, oh, you know what?
09:49I think, I think I'd rather have Dak.
09:51No.
09:52Agreed.
09:53We got enough evidence.
09:54And we go back to last year and I mentioned the Carolina game to the caller and I guess
09:58he had, uh, the earpiece away from his ear cause he kept talking, but I think it was
10:03three interceptions in eight, either eight snaps or eight throws.
10:07And even at that, he bounced back and, you know, he turned out to have a good year and
10:12won a playoff game.
10:13Exactly.
10:14Um, let's go out to the phones and again, um, let's hear it.
10:18Let's hear it.
10:18I'd love to know if 49er fans are comfortable with that thought.
10:23If there's still a bigger list of who you'd rather have doing this for the 49ers.
10:28Um, I love that we've arrived at a spot where I'm pretty sure what I'm saying right now isn't
10:34being received as crazy sauce.
10:37Like he's clearly at minimum, if I remove those big four, like he's on a very short list of
10:48who you want next.
10:49You wouldn't get to four more without him being in the four.
10:52Exactly.
10:53Agreed.
10:53Agreed.
10:54Um, Andy and Lakeview, Andy, thank you for calling Willie and Debbie.
10:58What you doing?
11:00Hey, Willard and Dibs.
11:01Thanks for taking the call.
11:02Um, just to answer the question of, uh, Brock Purdy, like why the national media is hyping
11:08him up so much now.
11:09So I feel like when it comes to Brock Purdy, he's been able to do two things.
11:14He's been able to overcome what he can't control and master what he can control.
11:20Is he six, four?
11:21No.
11:22Does he have a cannon of an arm?
11:23No.
11:24What's he Mr.
11:25Relevant?
11:25Yes.
11:25Usually in the NFL, Mr.
11:27Relevant, they don't do anything.
11:29So history has been against him, but can he process and read defenses at an insanely fast
11:35rate?
11:36Yes.
11:36Does he know when to step up in the pocket?
11:38Yes.
11:38Can he improvise on the run?
11:41Can he make throws that are difficult on the run?
11:43Yes.
11:43He can do all these things.
11:45And we've seen him come from behind.
11:47We've seen him blow out teams.
11:49Uh, Dibs was talking earlier.
11:50We've seen him throw three picks in a game and still somehow come out with the win.
11:54So I think what is happening is that at some point you can't fake this type of consistency.
12:01These wins, you can't fake these wins.
12:04Yes.
12:04We've had quarterbacks that are flashing the pans before.
12:07And I feel like a lot of people thought, Hey, Brock Purdy, he's just having a real good
12:12season.
12:12He's just having a real good string of games.
12:14It's been years now.
12:16And he's been going to the playoffs consistently with his 49ers team under Kyle Shanahan system.
12:21So I think the national media is starting to be like, all right, this can no longer be
12:27faked.
12:27He's been doing it at a high level for a long time.
12:30Now it's time to give him his just due and his flowers.
12:34And I feel like the turning point, um, where I started to notice it at least was against
12:40the bears last year, that shootout at Levi's stadium.
12:43He had that one play where the defense was just barreling down on him.
12:49He splits two defenders coming right at him.
12:52It's you check in the end zone for a touchdown.
12:55I think that's when people started to realize this isn't a flash in the pan type of quarterback.
12:59He's franchised.
13:01Niner fans like us, we've known it for a while now, ever since he stepped on the field.
13:06Um, but you know, the national media needs a little more convincing, but you can't fake
13:11wins and you can't fake his record, uh, at the end of the day.
13:15So that's just my two cents on it.
13:16Thanks so much, guys.
13:17Andy, it's a great call.
13:19I think what Andy's talking about is, can we finally get to a spot where we're comfortable
13:23with two things?
13:24Hey, Kyle Shanahan's an awesome coach, a great offensive mind.
13:29Therefore, does Purdy get in, put in his absolute best position to succeed?
13:35And does that help him?
13:37Yes, obviously.
13:39However, can we also now build a pretty big arsenal of plays and highlights where you
13:47look at what Brock does and go, well, that's not the offensive coordinator.
13:51That wasn't the play.
13:53We were okay.
13:54Run over there, pirouette, fake a dude out, underhanded to use check in the corner of the
13:59end zone for a tutty.
14:00Like even the Evans play that we've talked about so much, that's not play calling.
14:06That is improvisation.
14:08And it is very high level improvisation.
14:12That is instinct.
14:13That is athleticism.
14:15So that's why you're getting, more often than not, when these two are together, very,
14:20very high level football.
14:22Because both things are true.
14:24Kyle Shanahan is awesome and puts Brock in his best position to succeed.
14:28And Brock is fantastic.
14:30Therefore, making Kyle Shanahan's play calls look even better.
14:34Yeah, I recommend everyone go to the Kurt Warner quarterback confidential on YouTube.
14:39He did about a 28 minute breakdown of just about every throw from the Miami game.
14:43And I learned a ton from Kurt Warner about what it is Brock is actually doing.
14:48And he's able to, when the ball is snapped, see what the defense is going to do, whether
14:53it's the middle linebacker who's going to drop into cover two and therefore the middle
14:57is open.
14:57Or if the middle linebacker steps up to take away the middle, he knows then that the safety
15:03is going to have to go over and take the deep route.
15:05And so now the deep middle is going to be open and he's doing all this in a split second.
15:09And he, he knows what to look for.
15:11And so when he gets the ball, he's able to look at his keys.
15:14And even if the protection breaks down, like you were saying, his functional movement, his
15:19ability to climb the pocket or get outside or go to the check down, as Kurt Warner said,
15:24he's not afraid to take the layup.
15:26In other words, you see that the defense has a good play call for your normal routes.
15:30Where's McCaffrey?
15:32We're just going to do this now.
15:33And we're going to put it in a spot where Christian can run for an extra four.
15:36So a one yard game becomes five or six.
15:39And by the way, he's not afraid to take the layup, but he doesn't only take the layup.
15:44Right.
15:44Here's something I hadn't really noticed as much until I watched Chase Daniels breakdown
15:49from 18 angles of that throw to Mike Evans.
15:54He had an easier throw right in front of him.
15:57I think it was use check.
15:59He had what would have been, and I don't remember the down and distance, but he had what was
16:05a, I don't know, at least a five to seven yard gain.
16:11And use check was more than twice as close and open.
16:17Now Brock could have thrown it to him.
16:19It was an easier throw, is a safer throw, and a higher percentage throw.
16:26But he didn't do that.
16:27He didn't do that.
16:29We're not doing that.
16:29He went for the boogie.
16:31It was 28 to six, and it was first and 10 at the Miami 28.
16:35So you're up 28 to six.
16:37Maybe that was partly what was going to dictate it.
16:39But I do think that in that moment, the game for Brock against Miami had slowed so much down
16:45because he was in the zone.
16:47So he rolls left.
16:49One pump.
16:50One pump, Randy.
16:51That's all it took.
16:52And he was able to get outside the defender.
16:55And then I think two pumps is what they're allowed.
16:57No.
16:58But all he needed was one.
16:59You're right.
16:59Two pumps are allowed.
17:01But then he sees Evans, and he thinks, hmm, in the moment, we're up 28 to six.
17:05I like our chances.
17:06The defense has been great.
17:07Why not?
17:08Let it rip.
17:09Let it rip.
17:10Oh.
17:12Boosh.
17:13Yeah.
17:13And Evans would have liked to score, but, you know, McCaffrey was thinking, all right,
17:18glad you didn't, because I'm going to go ahead and ca-caw, swoop in and take that touchdown.
17:22How's everybody feeling about the five hole?
17:25How's everybody feeling about that?
17:27It is, I think, and again, this is just, it's,
17:31whatever, it's narrative talk.
17:33It's hockey talk is what it is.
17:34You know what I mean?
17:35Like, but Burrow, Lamar, Mahomes, and Allen.
17:42Sure.
17:43I give you those.
17:45Who's next?
17:46Who do you want next?
17:48And I think for the first time, for whatever reason, and that's why we started off the show
17:53going, why now?
17:54Why now?
17:56But for the first time in Brock Purdy's career, he is at minimum one of the first names that
18:03will come to the mind.
18:04When you go, okay, what's next?
18:06Where are we going next?
18:09QB draft?
18:10Who's the best fit here?
18:12Answer, like, answer it however the hell you want.
18:14But who's next?
18:17I'll take Purdy.
18:18Yeah.
18:19I'll take Brock Purdy with the fifth pick in the 49ers quarterback draft.
18:25Well, if we're doing a legacy draft, meaning this is the quarterback and you get to keep
18:29him for however long, I would go with Caleb Williams because he's younger and I do think
18:34that in the right system, and I believe he's actually found it with Ben Johnson, I think
18:38that that system's going to do a lot of wonders for him.
18:41He does need to take a page out of Brock's book at times and just not try to make the
18:47hero play all the time.
18:48Yeah.
18:49It's kind of, it feels like it's his DNA.
18:50It's, yeah, it's kind of his bit, but as we saw from Jackson Dart, it can be a dangerous
18:55proposition.
18:55No doubt, but he's also really good at it and he's done it in the playoffs already.
19:00But even Lamar Jackson, I think, has evolved into being much less of a stuff breaks down.
19:06It's up to me.
19:07No doubt.
19:08And he has lost about a half step and he lost about a half of a year last year.
19:13And I think those things will do that to you.
19:15I'm super fascinated to see what Jaden Daniels looks like when he comes back, even though
19:21Jaden keeps hurting himself without even being hit.
19:23But Jaden is a phenomenal runner, but he's also not very bulky.
19:30And you take a look around the league, I mean, boy, this is another point for Purdy.
19:36Here's something that I'd love to bring up.
19:38This mobility thing is such, oh, it is a risk reward game out there.
19:45We love to have mobility.
19:47Yes.
19:48Give me somebody who can move.
19:50But when you design it, when you lean on it, and then there's also something to be said
19:54for what you do when you do it.
19:58I think Brock is very good at a scramble here and there.
20:03But let's try not to take a hit.
20:05Like, he's very good at that.
20:07Let's dive.
20:08Let's not take risks here because we've got young, exciting quarterbacks throughout the NFC
20:15who will all watch football this weekend.
20:18Jackson Dart, Caleb Williams, Jaden Daniels.
20:22These were people's fantasy picks.
20:24For starters, these are big-time, young, mobile quarterbacks.
20:29They will all wear collared shirts on Sunday this week.
20:34And that's another credit, I think, to Brock because, to me, he is the absolute ideal in terms of mobility.
20:44He has it.
20:45He has it at a high level.
20:47I think he makes good choices in terms of when to use it and then how to use it.
20:54Don't take a big hit.
20:56I mean, you better be like, I need, it's third down, and I need to get to that fake TV
21:03yellow line
21:04in the fourth quarter of a playoff game.
21:06Then you can take a risk.
21:08But outside of that, dude, just don't do it.
21:12Do not take these hits.
21:15And so that's another reason why I think he works out so well.
21:18The order right now of quarterback rushing yards in the National Football League,
21:24with 107 yards, the watcher, Caleb Williams, with 100 yards, the watcher, Jaden Daniels,
21:32with 74 yards, Lamar Jackson.
21:34Then you get to Drake May with 64.
21:37Hang in there, Drake, because he takes a lot of shots.
21:39And then you get to, with 59, Maker Bayfield and Brock Purdy.
21:45So, and I think you're right about Brock's functional wisdom in the game against Miami.
21:50He had to scramble for 10.
21:51He dove, got the 10, and back to the huddle we go.
21:55Baker Mayfield's an interesting case, because he does.
21:58He's kind of that dog.
22:00Like, he'll stick his head in there.
22:01And it got him last year.
22:04He had to play through a lot of injuries, and he wasn't very good.
22:07And he is off to a very shaky start this year.
22:11Three fumbles.
22:11Exactly.
22:12Along with Tyler Shuck, and Justin Herbert, and Bo Nix, and Jared Goff.
22:18They all have fumbled three times.
22:19Yeah, and Breaker's thrown a handful of picks, too.
22:22Like, it's not just can you stay healthy, but when you take those hits, yeah, you fumble.
22:26That's how you turn the ball over.
22:28Protect the ball.
22:29Brock has one.
22:30One turnover so far.
22:32One turnover so far.
