A dramatic moment during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s arrival in Washington has sparked plenty of discussion online after cameras appeared to capture Donald Trump reacting as two B-1 bombers flew over the welcome ceremony.
Trump and Xi stood together at Joint Base Andrews as the aircraft passed overhead during the formal military display. Trump was seen saluting before appearing to briefly wince and turn toward Xi, while Xi appeared largely expressionless.
The contrasting reactions quickly became a talking point on social media, with some users questioning whether the flyover created the intended impression of strength and spectacle. Others focused on the different body-language moments captured during the ceremony.
The welcome included a red carpet, military honors, a marching band and ceremonial cannon fire, making it an unusually elaborate reception for Xi’s arrival.
Xi’s Washington visit is his first in more than a decade, with trade, technology, Taiwan and Iran among the major issues expected to feature in discussions.
The visit also comes as Washington and Beijing work to extend their trade truce, while Xi has called for the two countries to remain partners rather than rivals.
