Real Madrid found itself at the center of controversy before Tuesday’s match against Elche after Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Ibrahima Konaté did not fully display a solidarity shirt supporting Ceuta.
Players from both teams entered the Martínez Valero wearing shirts featuring the message “Todos somos caballas,” meaning “We are all Caballas,” as part of an initiative supporting residents of the Spanish autonomous city.
However, Mbappé and Vinícius were seen with the shirts rolled up, hiding much of the message, before removing them ahead of the pre-match formalities. Konaté also did not display the slogan fully. The reasons behind the players’ actions have not been publicly explained.
The gesture comes amid ongoing debate surrounding migration and recent events involving Ceuta, which borders Morocco in North Africa. Real Madrid later emphasized that players were free to decide whether to participate in the display.
The moment quickly drew attention online, adding another layer of controversy to an already sensitive issue.
