US President Donald Trump gave Chinese President Xi Jinping an unusually high-profile welcome as the Chinese leader arrived in Washington for a three-day summit.
Trump and First Lady Melania Trump personally greeted Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. The ceremony featured a long red carpet, US and Chinese flags, military honors and a flyover by two B-1 bombers as the US national anthem played.
Xi’s visit marks his first trip to Washington since 2015 and comes as both countries try to manage tensions over trade, technology, Taiwan, artificial intelligence and rare earth minerals.
The two nations have also agreed to extend their existing trade truce into January, giving negotiators more time to work toward a broader agreement.
Xi said China and the United States should act as partners rather than rivals, while Trump has emphasized the importance of strengthening the relationship.
The summit is expected to include private meetings and a state dinner attended by prominent US technology leaders. Melania Trump has also planned cultural visits with Peng Liyuan.
The high-stakes meeting could shape the direction of US-China relations in the months ahead.
