Cubs star Alex Bregman hospitalized

A scary moment unfolded during the Chicago Cubs’ 9-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds when third baseman Alex Bregman was hit in the face by a foul ball.

The incident happened in the fourth inning at Great American Ball Park. A foul ball off Michael Busch’s bat bounced near home plate before suddenly jumping up and striking Bregman on the left side of his face while he was in the on-deck circle.

Bregman immediately ran toward the dugout while holding his face. Team medical staff treated him before he was taken to a Cincinnati hospital for X-rays and CT scans.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Bregman suffered a cut beneath his eye, a nosebleed and significant swelling around his cheekbone. Bregman later shared an update showing his swollen eye and wrote, “Thanks for the messages y’all. I’ll be back.”

He was reportedly cleared to travel back to Chicago with the team. The Cubs will now monitor his condition ahead of Tuesday’s game against Miami.
