Trumpeter Dr. Jesse McGuire sings anthem after trumpet malfunctions

An unexpected equipment failure turned Dr. Jesse McGuire’s return to Chase Field into one of the most memorable moments of the Diamondbacks’ season.

McGuire, 68, was back to perform the national anthem as Arizona celebrated 25 years since its historic 2001 World Series victory over the Yankees. Known as a good-luck charm during that championship run, McGuire even received his own World Series ring.

But during Saturday’s ceremony, his trumpet malfunctioned just as the anthem began. Instead of stopping, McGuire quickly grabbed the microphone and continued singing the rest of “The Star-Spangled Banner” himself.

The crowd briefly cheered before falling silent to honor the anthem, and a giant American flag waved across the outfield as he reached the song’s powerful finale. McGuire received a standing ovation afterward, with manager Torey Lovullo also congratulating him.

He later returned during the seventh inning to perform “God Bless America” — this time singing it as well.
