Ukraine has launched what Moscow’s mayor described as the largest drone attack yet on the Russian capital and surrounding region, with hundreds of drones reportedly intercepted overnight.
Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said around 450 drones heading toward Moscow were shot down. The strikes reportedly damaged a residential building and hit the city’s major oil refinery, while Russian authorities said at least two people were killed and several others injured in the wider Moscow region.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian forces targeted a key Russian oil facility and a logistics site, arguing that such strikes put pressure on Russia’s ability to supply its military.
The attack also caused temporary restrictions at Moscow’s major airports, disrupting flights.
At the same time, Ukrainian officials reported deadly Russian strikes in the Kyiv and Sumy regions, with civilians, including children, among those killed.
The latest escalation comes as Russia and Ukraine continue exchanging strikes on energy, transport and military-related infrastructure, despite recent claims that attacks on energy facilities would be reduced.
