00:39All right, here's my rectangle piece so far.
00:42I decided to stop here at this round because it is now long enough to cover my baby's head.
00:49And as you can see, the starting yarn tail here is quite long and I can use it to sew.
00:56What you'll do is once you finish the height or not height, excuse me, the width of your hat, you're
01:05going to fold your rectangle in half, short ends meeting together like so.
01:14And then you can use this yarn tail in the back to stitch up the first row.
01:23So now I'm going to go ahead and take this yarn tail and we're going to stitch up that first
01:30row here.
01:33And I'm just going to go stitch by stitch.
02:03All right, I've stitched up that back.
02:06And with that, you'll see that your hat is now able to open up like so.
02:15This will be the front that frames the face.
02:19And here's the back with round or row one stitched together in half.
02:25Let's go ahead and weave in that tail end.
02:36Now what you'll do is go ahead and crochet the straps of the hat.
02:41I'll show you how that's done.
02:44We're going to first work on where we left off here.
02:48As you can see, my tail end is still attached to the very corner of the hat now.
02:54So we're going to start off by crocheting the first strap going down and then back.
03:02Then we're going to crochet around the frame of the hat where the face would go to the other side.
03:13Then we're going to crochet that second strap down and back.
03:18And optionally, you can also crochet back along the bottom edge of the hat to give it a nice and
03:25neat trim.
03:26Let's go ahead and get started.
03:29So turning your hat upside down like so, we're going to now crochet the straps.
03:36Let's make a long chain.
03:38I'm going to make maybe 30 chains and see how long that is.
03:431, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20,
03:5721, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30.
04:06So 30 chains is definitely a nice long length for the strap here.
04:12I think that's good.
04:14You can make it any amount of chains you want.
04:17Just make sure you remember the number so that the next strap will have the same number of chains.
04:23So here, after you make your long chain, what you'll do is insert a slip stitch into the second chain
04:30from your hook.
04:32And slip stitch all the way back to the first stitch where you started from.
04:40So now I'm going back, slip stitching.
04:49All right, here I have slip stitched all the way back down that chain and I am back at that
04:55starting point where I began the strap.
04:58What I'm going to do now is, since I'm on this side of the hat, I'm going to go ahead
05:04and crochet along the bottom edge of the hat.
05:07So flipping it over, I'm just going to insert a stitch in each of the half double crochets here.
05:15So going in and single crocheting across.
05:22The lovely thing about this is that it's very simple and quick to do a final edging on your piece.
05:33But it really makes a difference because it makes the whole piece look a lot more refined and neat.
05:42Let me stop to show you what it looks like now.
05:46As you can see, here is the edging done and here is the unworked part of the hat.
05:53So it is nice to have kind of that finishing touch.
06:00Now, crocheting back along.
06:05And I don't exactly count my stitches here.
06:10I just try and put in my stitches evenly across the row.
06:32All right, now I have gone ahead and single crocheted all the way across that bottom edge of the hat.
06:38So here's how it looks from the front.
06:43It's time to crochet the second strap.
06:47I started with 30 chains on the first strap.
06:50So I want to replicate that for my second one.
06:53If you did more or fewer chains, make sure you just use the same number of chains.
06:58So now I'm going to do 30.
06:591, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20,
07:1321, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30.
07:22After you do those 30 chains, you're going to repeat the instructions of slip stitching back in each chain starting
07:32with the second chain from your hook.
07:34So insert your hook there and make a slip stitch and slip stitch all the way back.
07:48All right, now I have crocheted all the way back to the start of my strap.
07:52And now the finishing final step is to crochet along the front edge of the hat.
08:02This part is optional because the front edge is already nice looking really.
08:10And this is just a little detail if you wanted to add, um, it to your hat, but totally optional.
08:18So what I'm going to do is insert my hook into the front.
08:21Oh, excuse me.
08:23Looking at the hat here, inserting my hook into the back loop of this last round of the hat.
08:32We're going to crochet across that way in back loops only.
08:36So we're going into the back loop.
08:38I'm just going to make a single crochet.
08:43Oops.

09:15After you've single crocheted in the back loop all the way across, back to that first strap you made, just
09:21make a slip stitch at the very end.
09:24And then you're going to fasten off and weave in your tail.
09:29As you can see, that was quite an easy way of turning a crocheted rectangle into a bonnet.
09:37Um, it's a really sweet way to make a hat for your little one.
09:43And it looks super cute on them as well.
