00:22Let us pray.
00:25Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when standing before Pilate, kept silent at all the unjust
00:34accusations and slanders of the Jews, and as a gentle lamb that did not open its mouth, did not contradict
00:42them when they brought forward their charges against you.
00:46Give me grace never to be disturbed by the false accusations of others, but may I overcome every injury by
00:53silence and meekness.
00:55Give me the grace of perfect humility, so that I may never desire praise nor refuse any measure of contempt.
01:04Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, you, lamb without spot, against whom the pious Pharisees and scribes
01:14raged with obstinate hatred.
01:17For a low Pilate testified that he found no cause of death in you, yet they would not be satisfied
01:24with anything except your death.
01:28Grant me grace to imitate your innocence and patience, that I may both lead a godly life, and for so
01:36doing, if I am spoken of evenly, that I may remain at rest in you, giving way to no indignation,
01:45but giving thanks to you in all adversity.
01:50Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who will lead in the greatest of indignity, in the manner
01:59of a wicked criminal, through the middle of the city, from one judgment seat to another, and from Pilate to
02:06Herod and back again, amidst the noise and shouts of the people.
02:11Give me grace never to be overcome by the injuries of my enemies, nor to be exasperated by slander.
02:19May I never feel any false shame at being despised, but may I receive everything in meekness, and endure all
02:27things in silence for your honor, that, by the assistance of your grace, I may in patience possess my soul.
02:36Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when Herod asked you many vain and foolish questions, and
02:44when you were falsely wounded in different ways by priest and scribe, humbly kept a meet and becoming silence.
02:53Give me grace to restrain my tongue in a manner well-pleasing to you.
02:58Do not permit me to utter hurtful words, do not permit me to be taken up with fruitless stories, but
03:05give me grace to say what is right, profitable, and honest, according to your will.
03:13May I abhor the sin of evil speaking, and be always glad to think and speak well of any man.
03:23Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who condemned by your silence the foolish curiosity of Herod, and
03:31who would not gratify his curious eyes by the performance of any miracle, because he did not have his own
03:39salvation at heart,
03:40and did there in this way teach us to avoid all ostentation before the great ones of this world.
03:49Pour into my heart a spirit of deep humility, mortify and quench within me any desire for vain glory.
03:58Grant that I may never do anything in order to gain praise of man, but may always act with a
04:04single eye upon the glory of your most holy name,
04:08and may come before you day by day in a true spirit of humility and meekness.
04:17Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who didn't refuse to be set to nothing by Herod and
04:24his men of war,
04:26nor to be clothed in a white garment and to be mocked and laughed at as though a fool and
04:31a madman.
04:32Give me grace, O Lord, to choose rather to be an outcast with you than to be glorious in the
04:38world.
04:39May I think it better and more honorable to suffer reproach for your name than to prosper in the vain
04:46honors of the world.
04:49Give me grace that, truly acknowledging my own sins and my own unworthiness,
04:54I may be as nothing in my own sight, but may always despise and accuse myself and daily lament over
05:03my own weakness and wretchedness.
05:06Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who was sent back with shame, clothed in a false garment
05:12from Herod the Pilate,
05:13and in all things obeyed your enemies going backwards and forwards according to their pleasure.
05:20Grant that I may not shrink from being despised, nor refuse obedience even to those who wish nothing but bad
05:29for me.
05:31Give me grace to have no feelings for the things of this world, but to think of and care for
05:36and love you alone.
05:39May you alone be my honor, my delight, my love, my glory, and my joy. Amen.
05:50O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths will sing your praise.
06:02O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths will sing your praise.
06:09O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths will sing your praise.
06:38O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths will sing your praise.
06:45O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths will sing your praise.
06:49Be thankful unto him, and speak full of his name.
06:58O Lord, is gracious, his mercy is everlasting.
07:06O Lord, is gracious, with singing alone.
07:12O Lord, obey me, to the Father, and to the Father, and to the Lord, and to the Holy Lord.
07:31As it was in the beginning, it's now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
07:50Amen.

12:30The Gospel according to Saint Luke, chapter 5.
12:36The Pharisees and their experts in the law complained to his disciples saying,
12:42Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?
12:47Jesus answered them those who are well don't need a physician but those who are
12:54sick do I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance then
13:04they said to him John's disciples fast frequently and pray and so that the
13:11disciples of the Pharisees but yours continue to eat and drink so Jesus turned
13:19and said to them you cannot make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom
13:24is with them can you but the days are coming and when the bridegroom is taken
13:30from them at that time they will fast he also told them a parable no one tears a
13:40patch from a new garment and then sews it onto an old garment if he does he will
13:46have torn the new and the piece from the new will not match the old and no one
13:52pours new wine into old wineskins if he does the new wine will burst the skins
13:58and will be spilt and the skins destroyed instead the new wine must be poured into
14:05new wineskins no one after drinking old wine wants the new for he says the old is
14:14good enough this is the word of the Lord thanks be to God we read today that there
14:27were two classes of people amazed and offended those to whom the old ways and
14:34recognized canons of respectability with the very essence of the religious life
14:40and those whose minds occupied a sort of intermediate position the word broken so
14:47far from the old but had not yet received the spirits of the new which had begun in
14:53galilee here is this rabbi whose fame has spread far and wide who is undoubtedly possessed of marvelous
15:04powers associating with people whom every respectable person would have shunned accepting a tax gatherers
15:12invitation and freely mingling with the worthless people found at the tax gatherers table surely this was an
15:21outrage against social and religious decency the scribes and the Pharisees the one of
15:30these two classes murmur observe against the disciples for they do not dare address the Lord
15:37himself why do you eat and drink with publicans and sinners the disciples guileless souls were probably
15:47unable to explain or account for their master and so he himself replies by quoting an old testament scripture
15:54one of those great prophetic words which express the spirit of all true religion prefacing and following this
16:03quotation by sentences of searching irony they that are well do not need the physician but those that are sick
16:15but go and learn what that means i want mercy and not sacrifice for i have not come to call
16:23the righteous but sinners to repentance let us think for a moment how significant is every one of those clauses
16:35they who are whole or well will the murmurers take that description as fit for them
16:44then the jesus whom they surround has nothing for them his work is not for the self-righteous but for
16:51those
16:51who are conscious of their sin and their needs but who so would be teachers of the people as they
16:58may be
16:59let them go and first learn the lesson of divine wisdom that it is the delight of god's love to
17:06find out
17:07fatherless souls that he is satisfied not by formal acts of worship rendered in mere obedience to usage
17:16but by the seeking of poor outcasts from ordinance and society and by fellowship with them he reveals the
17:24purpose i want mercy and not sacrifice
17:30then comes the moment at which along with the pharisees the other of the two offended classes
17:36those occupying an intermediate position between the old and the new appear on the scene
17:43some disciples of john the baptist have been scanning the movements of the prophets of nazareth
17:50and the feast just held gives increased force to their doubts and difficulties
17:58the joyous life which jesus and his followers are living contrasts
18:06massively with the sternly simple aesthetic life which they had been taught to regard as best
18:14can the joyous life be right why this disregard of the fundamental principle
18:25outward discipline why is he so lax with those whom he has called
18:33the answer given has an abiding interest for the church in all times
18:39first of all observe christ's word with regard to the special issue raised
18:44and secondly observe his setting out of the fundamental truth as to his gospel and kingdom
18:52first of all we have you the issue of fasting jesus does not deny its usefulness he fasted
19:03moreover in his sermon on the mount he recognized fasting as one of the elements of a religious
19:07life what is saying bears on its observance as a fixed habitable rule this time the rule christ
19:16teaches must come from within the heart he goes to the root of the matter when he asks can the
19:23children
19:23of the bright chamber mourn there is nothing if there is not mourning mere non-eating is nothing mere austerity
19:33is nothing self-denial for the sake of denial is nothing it is the relation to the spiritual end the
19:42power
19:42of interpreting and helping spiritual life that gives service to its value
19:49how can you make these children mourn while i am with them their fasting at present will be wholly artificial
19:58it is the worship in spirit and truth that i want when they can really mourn they will but until
20:05them let
20:06them rejoice these days did indeed come the bridegroom was taken from them and they mourned and still as then
20:16there are as one has called them fast days which god appoints souls
20:24christ's disciples should have their retreats when the round of pleasure or of care is given up
20:30and the blessing of solitude with god can be realized only let these be not because of a law made
20:37for them
20:38but because of the law by which the lord through the dealings of his holy spirit writes within their own
20:44hearts supposing the space for such retreats cannot be secured remember there is a fasting which all can
20:54practice anyone can abstain at any time from self-pleasure and indulgence all may consider whether or not it is
21:04a
21:04duty to abstain from things lawful when the use of such things is an occasion of stumbling to a brother
21:12all should recollect the grand old words
21:16is not this fast that i have chosen
21:19to loose the bands of wickedness to undo the heavy burdens and to let the oppressed go free
21:25that everyone break every yoke
21:28is it not to deal bread to the hungry and that you bring the poor into your house
21:36when you see the naked that you cover them and that you do not hide yourself from your own flesh
21:46the word as to the fasting brings into sight the whole question as to the requirements
21:52and the nature of the truth as it is in jesus
21:59glance at the outstanding verses
22:03of the ever memorable parable between the 36th and 39th verses
22:12the bearing of the sentence as to patching
22:16tells us the disciples of john and the pharisees virtually ask that jesus sew the new cloth which
22:22is woven from his person and sacrifice into an old or rotten garment the answer is no
22:31that which has decayed and is waxing old is ready to vanish let it go
22:37when it comes to this patching and mending is a worthless policy because it does not benefit the
22:44old whilst it spoils the new for the new cannot hold on to the seam of the old and when
22:51it gives way
22:52not only is the rent made worse but in the end the new will be rejected also
22:59so what is particularly meant by the similitude of the garment is the manner of life that which forms
23:07the envelopment of the soul as to this christ wants no patching christianity is not judaism with something
23:16bolted onto it something sewn into it it is not a conglomerate of two religions
23:25it comprehends all that is good anywhere but it destroys nothing it is a new robe however and all
23:34that is old is made new and so it must be with the character it is not a mirror mending
23:42at this point
23:43or at all that will suffice merely to sew a new piece of the cloth to have a fragment of
23:50christ's
23:50religion packed onto the old rotten self will that suffice truly no put away the old man put on the
24:00new
24:01or if any man be in christ he is a new creature
24:08then we come to the bearing of the sentence as regard to the wine by this it would seem the
24:16lord means the
24:16inward spiritual principle the grace that the best wine which goes down smoothly gliding through the
24:24lips of those that are asleep this is not some compound of old dregs of wine but has all the
24:33strength and flavor of the old but it is new it is the fruit of the grape which none but
24:40the son of god
24:41could bruise it is the product of a wine press which none but he could tread it has the power
24:48of a
24:48sustenance which none but he could infuse this new life must be put into new bottles it demands falls of
24:58forms of worship and action peculiar to itself forms of worship adapted at once to the richness of sentiments
25:05and the simplicity of its utterance the natural and becoming vehicles of its own voice of prayer and
25:13praise forms of action in harmony at once with its spirituality and its humanity it is too living and strong
25:23for any receptacle of its influence except that which has been created for and by itself new wine and new
25:32bottles let the hearer of the word ponder this for a moment
25:39note the point of junction between liberty and discipline in the christian life where the spirit
25:46of the lord is there is liberty but to realize this liberty the will presented to the lord must be
25:55opened and
25:56ordered ordered that the movements of his love flow in and the power of his grace be fulfilled
26:03it is all of grace but the new bottle is needed for the new wine the lord is very clear
26:11about this
26:13the principle of an entire subjection to god must be asserted over every impeding tendency
26:22in our present state pain must go with prayer that the heart be kept believing true and clean
26:30a wineskin fit for the new wine hereafter in the eternal year of the bridegroom joy it shall be otherwise
26:42then they who wait upon the lord shall run and not be weary walk and not grow tired
26:52amen
26:58let us pray
27:00o lord we beseech you grant your people grace to withstand the temptations of the world
27:06the flesh the flesh and the devil and with pure hearts and minds follow you the only god
27:14through jesus christ our lord amen
27:22may the lord bless us and keep us from all evil bringing us to everlasting life amen
27:36o lord
