00:22Let us pray
00:26Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
00:29Who, when your disciples and friends deserted and left you
00:33Remained alone in the hands of sinful men
00:36Like a most gentle lamb
00:38Within the jaws of a ravenous wolf
00:43Strengthen my excessive weakness
00:45And confirm my too great unstableness
00:47By the support of your grace
00:49And join me to yourself with the bonds of love
00:53That I may neither have no wish nor the power
00:56Ever to depart or separate myself from you
01:01Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
01:04Who allowed yourself to be led around bound
01:07By an armed band and taken to Annas
01:12Allowing yourself to be stood before him
01:14As though you were a common criminal or robber
01:19O unspeakable gentleness of my Redeemer
01:22Look, while they take and drag and thrust you forward
01:27You uttered not a single word of complaint
01:30Or murmur or word of resistance
01:33But in silence you followed them wherever they led you
01:37Obeying their commands
01:39And permitted their wanton injuries to you
01:44Grant, O Lord, that these your virtues may shine in me
01:47To the everlasting glory of your name
01:51Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
01:54King of heaven and earth
01:55Who in great humility
01:57As poor and needy and of no account
02:00Was stood before the proud High Priest
02:03And most sweetly endured the dreadful blow
02:07Which his impious servant put upon you
02:12Restrain, I beg you
02:13In me all outbreak of anger and passion
02:17Suppress all acts of indignation
02:20And quench within me all desire of revenge
02:24That when I am provoked by injury
02:27I may not be disturbed
02:28I may offer no resistance
02:31May suffer no disquiet
02:34But endure everything with a quiet mind
02:36May I even repay evil with good
02:41Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
02:43Who permitted himself to be lead-boned
02:46In a shameful manner to Caiaphas
02:48That you might deliver us from the penalty
02:51Of eternal death
02:52Restoring to us true liberty
02:56Make me most ready
02:58To endure every reproach
02:59And all contempt for your name's sake
03:03Grant that in the very middle
03:05Of ridicule and outrage
03:06I may give you thanks with a perfect heart
03:09And by means of these trials
03:11May grow and increase more and more
03:14In your love
03:18Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
03:20Who, when three times denied
03:23By your Apostle Peter
03:26Mercifully turned and looked upon him
03:28With kindness
03:29And brought him to repentance
03:31And holy sorrow for his sin
03:33In like manner
03:34May you turn upon me also
03:37Your eye of mercy and love
03:39That I may weep over my past sins
03:42With the tears of true penitence
03:44And may never again commit them
03:47May I never be found sinning
03:49Against your goodness
03:50In word or deed
03:54Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
03:56Who stood before the elders
03:58And the people of the Jews
03:59With a calm countenance
04:00And humble look
04:02Who did not refuse to be falsely accused
04:05And to suffer many injuries
04:09Give me grace never to say an untrue word
04:11Or to falsely accuse my neighbour
04:14But that I may bear with all quietness of heart
04:17The calumniers that are heaped upon me
04:21Casting all my troubles upon you
04:23May I always, in silence
04:25Look for the grave and consolation
04:28At your hands
04:32Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ
04:35Who, when Caiaphas the High Priest
04:38Adjured you by the name of God
04:41Declared the truth
04:42And proclaimed yourself the Son of God
04:44And did not refuse to be counted by him
04:47And the rest who stood by as a blasphemer
04:50May I fully abhor this contempt
04:53And defence against you
04:54May I, in every place
04:57Reverence the presence of your divinity and majesty
05:03May I think of you
05:04Adore, praise and love you
05:07Above all things
05:08Forever and forever
05:11Amen
05:15O Lord, open our lips
05:17And our mouths shall sing your praise
05:26O be joyful in the Lord
05:31Lord in hands
05:33Serve the Lord with gladness
05:37And come with all his prayers
05:40And thrillers on
05:43Be sure that the Lord
05:47He is God
05:49This is he that hath made us
05:53And must be ourselves
05:55We are his people
05:58And the sheep of his pasture
06:01Who put your way
06:05And in tune in his past
06:12And in tune in his past
06:12We praise
06:13We thank God to him
06:17And speak full of his name
06:21For the Lord
06:24For the Lord is gracious
06:25His mercy is everlasting
06:31And his truth and joy
06:35From generation to generation
06:44Glory be to the Father
06:48And to the Son
06:52And to the Holy Ghost
06:56As it was in the beginning
07:00Is now and ever shall be
07:05World without end
07:09World without end
07:13Amen
07:23I will cry unto God
07:28With my voice
07:30Even unto God
07:34Will I cry with my voice
07:37And he shall harken unto me
07:44In the time of my trouble
07:48I sought my Lord
07:52My sore man
07:56And sees not in the night season
07:59My sore refuted comfort
08:07When I am in heaviness
08:11I will think upon God
08:15When my heart is vexed
08:21I will complain
08:25Thou holdest my eyes
08:33I am so feeble
08:37That I cannot speak
08:42I have considered
08:45The days above
08:50And the days that are past
08:57I call to thee
09:00Bexed my soul
09:04And in the night
09:07I commune with my Lord
09:10God
09:10And search out my spirit
09:18Will the Lord
09:21Will the Lord
09:21Ascent himself for ever
09:25And will he be no more entreated
09:33Is his mercy clean gone for ever
09:41And his mercy clean gone for ever
09:46And his mercy clean gone for ever
09:49And his mercy clean gone for ever
10:06in his pleasure.
10:11And I said,
10:14It is
10:15thine own
10:16infanity,
10:20but I
10:21will remember the
10:23years of the writer
10:25of the

10:31I will remember
10:33the works
10:35of the Lord
10:36and call to

10:41thy work as
10:42of old time.
10:48I will think
10:50much
10:51of all
10:52my works
10:55and
10:57my talking
10:58shall be of
11:00thy doings.

13:48A reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke chapter 7.
13:56When John's messengers had departed, he began to tell the multitude to pet John.
14:01What did you go out into the wilderness to see?
14:04A reed shaken by the wind?
14:07But what did you go out to see?
14:09A man clothed in soft clothing?
14:12With old, those who are gorgeously dressed and live delicately
14:16are to be found in the king's courts.
14:20But what did you go out to see?
14:22A prophet?
14:24Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet.
14:27This is he of whom it was written,
14:29Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
14:32who will prepare your way before you.
14:36For I tell you, among those who are born of women,
14:38there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptiser.
14:42Yet he who is least in God's kingdom is greater than he.
14:48When all the people and the tax collectors heard this,
14:52they declared God to be just,
14:54having been baptised with John's baptism.
14:58But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the counsel of God,
15:01not being baptised by him themselves.
15:06To what then?
15:07Should I compare these people of this generation?
15:10What are they like?
15:12They are like the children who sit in the marketplace
15:14and call to one another, saying,
15:16We piped for you, and you did not dance.
15:18We mourned, and you did not weep.
15:21For John the Baptiser came,
15:23neither eating them bread, nor drinking wine.
15:25And you say,
15:26He has a demon.
15:29The Son of Man has come eating and drinking.
15:31And you say,
15:32Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunken,
15:35a friend of tax collectors and sinners.
15:39Wisdom is justified by all their children.
15:45One of the Pharisees invited him to eat with him.
15:49He entered into the Pharisee's house and sat at the table.
15:53Behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner,
15:57when she knew that he was reclining in the Pharisee's house,
16:00brought an alabaster jar of ointment.
16:03And standing behind at his feet weeping,
16:06she began to wet his feet with her tears,
16:08and she wiped them with the hair of her head,
16:11kissed his feet,
16:12and anointed them with the ointment.
16:16Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it,
16:19he said to himself,
16:21This man, if he were a prophet,
16:23would have perceived who and what kind of woman this is
16:26who touches him,
16:27and that she is a sinner.
16:31Jesus answered him,
16:33Simon, I have something to tell you.
16:36He said,
16:37Teacher, say on.
16:39A certain lender had two debtors.
16:42One owed five hundred denarii,
16:44and the other fifty.
16:46When they couldn't pay,
16:48he forgave them both.
16:51Which of them do you suppose
16:53will love him the most?
16:57Simon answered,
16:58He, I suppose,
16:59to whom he forgave the most.
17:02He said to him,
17:03You have judged correctly.
17:06Turning to the woman,
17:07he said to Simon,
17:08Do you see this woman?
17:10I entered into your house,
17:11but she,
17:12since the time I came in,
17:13has not ceased to kiss my feet.
17:17You did not anoint my head with oil,
17:19but she has anointed my feet with ointment.
17:22Therefore I tell you,
17:23Her sins,
17:24which are very many,
17:25are forgiven,
17:26for she has loved so much.
17:29But to whom little is forgiven,
17:31the same loves little.
17:34He said to her,
17:35Your sins are forgiven.
17:39Those who sat at the table with him
17:41began to murmur amongst themselves,
17:43Who is this who even forgives sins?
17:47He said to the woman,
17:48Your faith has saved you.
17:50Go in peace.
17:55This is the word of the Lord.
17:58Thanks be to God.
18:04Jesus was dining with an important person.
18:08A member of the Jewish religious hierarchy.
18:11And we can picture the scene.
18:13Lots of show,
18:14so that everyone would see
18:15how important this man was.
18:20Jesus was not that impressed,
18:22saying that he had been given food to eat,
18:24but no water to wash his feet.
18:27The woman,
18:28on the other hand,
18:28goes to great expense.
18:30She cannot invite Jesus to her house,
18:32but she has a pot of expensive ointment,
18:35which she uses to refresh his feet.
18:40When Jesus was rebuked for allowing this to happen,
18:43he turned the event around
18:44and asked which of the two loved him more.
18:48The official who no doubt thought himself very proper,
18:51or the fallen sinful woman.
18:56The man who has ostensibly little to be forgiven,
18:59or the sinful woman.
19:02His host correctly answered that it would be the woman.
19:09How much do we love Jesus?
19:11How much do we express our love and our thanks
19:14for all that he has done for us?
19:21We need to understand some of the peculiarity
19:23of oriental customs,
19:25together with the earnest and eagerness
19:28of this particular penitent,
19:30this woman.
19:31And then we can understand to account
19:35for her effecting an entrance
19:37into the house of the Pharisee
19:38and gaining access to the feet of our Lord.
19:42And the lessons we can gain
19:44are fundamental.
19:47Firstly,
19:48that there is free and full forgiveness
19:50of the worst of all of us.
19:53It is somewhat striking
19:54that although Old Testament scripture
19:56abounds in passages
19:58which attest the greatness of God's mercy
20:01to the repentant,
20:02the Jews of our Lord's time
20:04had no place for such
20:05in their system or their practice.
20:08This could not have been
20:09from unfamiliarity
20:11with the sacred record.
20:13But it rather arose
20:14from ignorance of themselves.
20:16For they did not acknowledge
20:18their own sin
20:19or any shortcoming
20:21in their own lives.
20:25Simon probably thought
20:26that Jesus was putting
20:27the debt
20:28which represented
20:31his obligation
20:32fifty pennies
20:34at a high figure.
20:36And so mistaking themselves
20:38it is not to be wondered
20:39that they took a false view
20:41of their neighbours.
20:42That they looked upon
20:43those who were
20:44outwardly bad
20:45as being hopelessly
20:47irrecoverable.
20:49But not so our Saviour.
20:51By action
20:52as much as by language
20:53he made it clear
20:55that the guiltiest of men
20:56and the worst of women
20:57may come in penitence
20:58and be restored.
21:01That is the valuable
21:02and lasting significance
21:04of this attitude
21:05of his attitude
21:06on this occasion.
21:07His treatment
21:08of this woman
21:09together with the gracious words
21:11to her
21:12in verse 48
21:13are to us
21:14as they ever will be
21:15the strong assurance
21:17that those
21:18whom we most
21:19unsparingly condemn
21:20and most scrupulously
21:22exclude
21:23may find mercy
21:24at his feet.
21:29Secondly
21:30that not her love
21:31but her penitence
21:32was the ground
21:33of her forgiveness.
21:36When Christ said
21:38her sins
21:39which are many
21:40are forgiven
21:40or she loved much
21:45he did not
21:45and could not
21:46have meant
21:47that her love
21:48was the ground
21:49but that it was
21:50the consequence
21:51of her forgiveness.
21:56He meant
21:57to say
21:58you can see
21:59that she has been
22:00forgiven
22:00for you see
22:01how she loves
22:02and it is only
22:03they who have been
22:04forgiven
22:05what she has been
22:06forgiven
22:06that love
22:08as she loves.
22:09The fullness
22:10of her love
22:11is therefore
22:11the proof
22:12but not the
22:12grain
22:13of her forgiveness.
22:16What led
22:17to her forgiveness
22:18was her penitence.
22:19The bitter tears
22:21she shed
22:21in verse 38
22:22were the tears
22:23of a true
22:24contrition.
22:26They meant
22:27a holy hatred
22:28of her past sin
22:29and a sincere
22:30determination
22:31to lead another life
22:33not being repelled
22:34but accepted
22:35by his holy
22:36and merciful.
22:38Deep
22:39and strong
22:40gratitude
22:40arose in her
22:41and the penitence
22:42for love
22:43and a new
22:44and blessed hope
22:44surged
22:45and strove
22:46together
22:46in an uncontrollable
22:47emotion
22:48within her heart.
22:51When God
22:52shows us
22:53our fault
22:53we should go
22:54at once
22:55to the merciful
22:55Saviour
22:56and trusting
22:57in him
22:58we are received
22:59and restored
23:00and then a pure
23:01deep
23:02lasting love
23:03arises in our souls.
23:06It is the simple
23:07natural
23:08beautiful
23:08outgrowth
23:09of penitence
23:10and faith.
23:14Thirdly
23:15that the sense
23:16of God's grace
23:17to us all
23:18will determine
23:19the fullness
23:19of our affection
23:20toward him.
23:23To him
23:24whom
23:24little is forgiven
23:26the same
23:26loves little.
23:28If we have
23:29an imperfect
23:30sense
23:30of our guilt
23:31and therefore
23:32of God's mercy
23:33to us
23:33our response
23:34in gratitude
23:34and love
23:35will be far
23:36below what it
23:37should be.
23:38It is therefore
23:40of the gravest
23:40importance
23:41that we should
23:42know and feel
23:43our own faultiness
23:44in the sight
23:45of God.
23:48For clearly
23:49it is not
23:49the magnitude
23:50of our past sin
23:51but the fullness
23:52of our sense
23:53of guilt
23:53which determines
23:55the measure
23:55of our feeling
23:56in the matter
23:57of gratitude
23:58and love.
24:01and it is
24:02for this
24:02that we must
24:03look.
24:03We shall find
24:04it as we dwell
24:05on the greatness
24:06of God's goodness
24:07toward us
24:08in his providence
24:09and in his grace
24:10in the poverty
24:11and the feebleness
24:12of our filial
24:13return to him
24:14for all his love
24:15and care
24:16and kindness
24:17toward us
24:18in the fact
24:20in the fact
24:20that he has been
24:20requiring purity
24:21of thought
24:23and rectitude
24:24of soul
24:25and sincerity
24:26of motive
24:27as well as
24:28propriety of word
24:29and integrity
24:30of deed.
24:33For this also
24:34we must pray
24:35asking
24:36for that
24:37enlightening spirit
24:38who will show us
24:39our true selves
24:40and fill us
24:41with a great sense
24:42of our own
24:43true unworthiness
24:44and our many
24:46wickednesses.
24:52Let us pray.
24:55O God
24:56for as much
24:57as without you
24:58we are not able
24:59to please you
25:01mercifully grant
25:02that your Holy Spirit
25:04may in all things
25:05direct
25:06and rule
25:07our hearts
25:08through Jesus Christ
25:10our Lord
25:11Amen.
25:17May the Lord
25:18bless us
25:19and keep us
25:20from all evil
25:21bringing us
25:22to everlasting life
25:25Amen.
