00:22Let us pray.
00:41Let us pray.
00:56May all arrogance be ever cast down.
00:59May all longing for the praise of men be extinguished.
01:02May all wantonness of self-conceit be quenched within me.
01:07Give me grace, O Lord, to flee any honour, to hate distinction,
01:12and to submit myself with readiness to all men for your sake.
01:17Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
01:20who, as a little child, did with your tender mother suffer persecution,
01:25and did not refuse to be carried as an exile fleeing into Egypt.
01:31Give me grace amidst the storms of adversity and the blasts of persecution and misfortune,
01:38to fly for refuge to you alone, to seek you, to call upon you.
01:44Grant that I may receive all things with gladness at your hands,
01:48may endure all things in meekness of heart,
01:51and may cleave with thanksgiving without wavering to you.
01:56Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
01:59who, when you remained behind in the temple,
02:02your mother sought for sorrowing,
02:05and at length with joy found you sitting in the midst of the doctors,
02:09hearing and asking them questions.
02:12May you so give and communicate yourself to me,
02:15that I may never be separated from you,
02:18and never be without the comfort of your blessed friendship.
02:22Drive sloth from my heart,
02:25dispel any dullness that is displeasing in your sight.
02:29Grant me perfect devotion,
02:31and such an ardent thirst after piety,
02:34that my soul may be so affected and possessed by it,
02:38as never to feel satisfied with worshipping you.
02:43Praise, honour, and glory be to you,
02:45who gave yourself up to live in concealment for thirty years,
02:50to be reputed by the Jews the son of Joseph the carpenter,
02:54and be subject to the commands of your mother and the same Joseph.
02:59May your grace, I beg you,
03:02root out and thoroughly pluck up
03:04from the innermost recesses of my heart
03:06any ambition and seeking of glory,
03:10that I may become belittled in my own eyes,
03:13and may love to be unknown and considered of no account,
03:17submitting myself to all,
03:19and obeying them for your honour.
03:22Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
03:25who did not refuse to come to the River Jordan,
03:28and be baptised there by your servant John.
03:33May you thoroughly cleanse me by your merits in this life,
03:38that freed from all vices and sins,
03:41I may be filled with the love of you,
03:44and long for my heavenly country.
03:47Make me, I beg you,
03:49before my soul quits this body,
03:52pleasing to you in all things,
03:54that, departing from this life,
03:56I may be for ever in heaven with you,
03:59to see you,
04:01to enjoy you,
04:02and to praise your holy name for ever and ever.
04:06Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
04:09who for our sake dwelt in the wilderness,
04:12amongst the wild beasts,
04:14and fasted and watched in prayer for forty days and forty nights,
04:19permitting yourself to be tempted by the devil,
04:21whom you overcame when angels came and ministered to you.
04:26Grant me grace to discipline, overcome,
04:29and bring into subjection my sinful flesh
04:32with its evil affections.
04:37Give me grace to be instant in prayer
04:39and all other spiritual exercises,
04:41and grant that with your continual help
04:45I may completely overcome sins of gluttony
04:48and may escape the snares and schemes of the devil.
04:54Let no temptations, I beg you,
04:56defile me,
04:57nor separate me from you,
04:59but may they rather purify me
05:02and unite and join me with you.
05:06Praise, honour, and glory be to you, O Christ,
05:09who gave himself up to preach repentance,
05:13to call to you disciples,
05:15and from them choose the twelve apostles
05:16to be the special heralds of the faith,
05:20gathering together the children of God
05:22that were scattered abroad.
05:24Draw me after you,
05:26and powerfully excite my heart to love you.
05:30Do not permit me to neglect the grace
05:33with which you called me,
05:34but make me ready to despise the world
05:37and all perishable things,
05:39following you,
05:40taking your humility and charity as my example.
05:44Give me grace to look for you alone,
05:47and with earnest longing
05:48to sigh continually after you.
05:52Amen.
05:56O Lord, open our lips,
05:59and our mouths shall sing your praise.
06:08O be joyful in the Lord,
06:13O be glad,
06:15serve the Lord with gladness,
06:19and come in white,
06:21present with a talk.
06:26Be sure that the Lord,
06:29he is God,
06:31is he that has made us
06:34and lost me ourselves.
06:37We are his people
06:40and the sheep of his pasture.
06:45O pray, O pray,
06:47to his grace with mercy,
06:50and in truly his constant grace,
06:55Be thankful unto him,
06:58and speak to the Lord of his name.
07:04O the Lord is gracious,
07:08his mercy is everlasting,
07:14and his truth and joy
07:17from generation to generation.
07:26glory be to the Father,
07:31and to the Son,
07:34and to the Holy Ghost,
07:38as it was in the beginning,
07:42is now and ever shall be,
07:47world without end.
07:54Amen.
08:05Help me, O Lord,
08:08for there is not one God's repentance,
08:13for the faithful of each,
08:18among the children of men.
08:23They took of vanity,
08:26every one with his name.
08:30They do but flatter with their lips,
08:35and they send them in their job.
08:39And they send them in their job.
08:41The Lord shall put out all this people's lips,
08:47and thy song that speaketh from this.
08:54We shall stand,
08:56without song will be given.
09:00We are there that ought to speak,
09:04who is Lord of our hearts.
09:09Lord, for the comfortless job,
09:13who speak of the need,
09:17and because of the need,
09:20smiling of the fruit,
09:25I will upset the Lord,
09:29and will help everyone from him
09:33that sweareth against him,
09:36and will set him as rest.
09:40The words of the Lord are pure words,
09:46even as the silver,
09:49which from the earth is dry and glorified
09:53by seven times in the fire.
09:59Thou shalt keep him alone,
10:04Thou shalt preserve him
10:06from this generation forever.
10:10Thou shalt keep him alone,
10:17when they are exalted,
10:21the children of men
10:24of those who live long.
10:32Glory to God, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now
10:49and ever shall be, world without end.
11:13The book of Revelation, chapter 19, verses 1 to 21.
11:19After these things, I heard what sounded like the voice of a vast throng in heaven, saying,
11:26Alleluia! Salvation, glory, and power belong to our God, because his judgments are true and just.
11:35For he has judged the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her sexual immorality, and has avenged the blood
11:43of his servants poured out by her own hands.
11:47Then the second time the crowd shouted, Alleluia! The smoke rises from her forever and ever.
11:56The twenty-four elders and the four living creatures threw themselves to the ground, and worshipped God, who was seated
12:05on the throne, saying, Amen! Alleluia!
12:09And then a voice came from the throne, saying, Praise our God, all you his servants, all you who fear
12:17him, both the small and the great.
12:22Then I heard what sounded like the voice of a vast throng, like the roar of many waters, and like
12:29loud crashes of thunder.
12:32They were shouting, Alleluia! For the Lord our God, the all-powerful, reigns. Let us rejoice and exult. Let us
12:41give him glory, because the wedding celebration of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.
12:50She was permitted to be dressed in bright, clean, fine linen. For the fine linen is the righteous deeds of
12:57the saints.
13:00Then the angel said to me, Write the following, Blessed are those who are invited to the banquet at the
13:07wedding celebration of the Lamb.
13:11He also said to me, These are the true words of God.
13:17So I threw myself down at his feet to worship him.
13:20But he said, Do not do this, for I am only a fellow servant with you, and your brothers and
13:27sisters.
13:28Who hold to the testimony of Jesus.
13:32Worship God, for the testimony about Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
13:39Then I saw the heavens open, and here came a white horse.
13:43The one riding it was called Faithful and True.
13:48With justice, he judges and goes to war.
13:52His eyes are like a fiery flame, and there are many diadem crowns on his head.
13:59He has a name written that no one knows except himself.
14:04He is dressed in clothing dipped in blood, and he is called the Word of God.
14:10The armies that are in heaven, dressed in white, clean, fine linen, followed him on white horses.
14:18From his mouth extended a sharp sword, so that with it he could strike the nations.
14:25He will rule them with an iron rod, and he stomps the winepress of the furious wrath of God, the
14:31all-powerful.
14:33He has a name written on his clothing and on his dye.
14:37King of kings and Lord of lords.
14:42Then I saw one angel standing in the sun, and he shouted in a loud voice to all the birds
14:48flying high in the sky.
14:51Come, gather around for the great banquet of God, to eat your fill of the flesh of kings, the flesh
14:57of generals, the flesh of powerful people,
15:00the flesh of horses and those who ride on them, the flesh of all people, both free and slave, small
15:07and great.
15:09Then I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth and their armies, assembled, ready to do battle with
15:15the one who rode on the horse and with his army.
15:19And now the beast was seized, and along with him the false prophet, who had performed the signs on his
15:25behalf.
15:26The signs by which he had deceived those who had received the mark of the beast, and those who worshipped
15:32his image.
15:35Both were thrown alive into the lake of fire, burning with sulfur.
15:40The others were killed by the sword that extended from the mouth of the one who rode the horse.
15:48All the birds gorged themselves with their flesh.
15:53This is the word of the Lord.
15:55Thanks be to God.
16:04Those who had followed with attention the course of the book of Revelation, can hardly fail to have observed its
16:11leading conception with which it deals.
16:15And that it envisions the history of the church moulded upon the history of her Lord, whilst he lived among
16:22men.
16:24It is the invariable lesson of the New Testament, that Christ and his people are one.
16:29He is the vine, they the branches.
16:33He is in them, they are in him.
16:37With equal uniformity, the sacred writers teach us that just as Christ suffered during the course of his earthly ministry,
16:45so also his people suffer.
16:49They have to endure the struggle before they can enjoy the victory,
16:53and to bear the cross before they win the crown.
16:58But the peculiarity of the apocalypse is that it carries out this thought much more fully than the other books
17:06of the New Testament.
17:09St. John does not merely see the church suffer.
17:12He sees her suffer in a way precisely as her Lord did.
17:17He lives in the thought of those words spoken by Jesus to Salome,
17:22at a striking moment of his life, with regard to his brother and himself.
17:28The cup that I drink, you shall drink, and with the baptism that I am baptised, with all you will
17:35be baptised.
17:37That very cup is put into his hands and into the hands of his brothers,
17:41who are sharers with him in the tribulation, the kingdom and patience which are in Jesus.
17:49With that very baptism, they are all baptised.
17:55Now we know from the fourth gospel what the light was in which St. John looked back,
18:01at the distance of more than half a century upon the life of Jesus.
18:06Nothing was more natural than that.
18:09Dealing only with the great principles at work in God's government of the world and guidance of his church.
18:16Seeing those principles embodied in vision,
18:18the visions presented to him a course of things precisely similar
18:23to that which had been followed in the case of the forerunner of the church,
18:29and the captain of her salvation.
18:32Turning then to the fourth gospel,
18:34it has long been acknowledged by every enquirer of any importance
18:38that the struggle of Jesus with the world,
18:41which the evangelist cheaply intends to relate,
18:44ends with the close of chapter 12.
18:48It is equally undeniable that with the beginning of chapter 13,
18:52the struggle breaks out again.
18:57Between these two points,
18:59like chapters 13 to 17,
19:02chapters altogether different from those that either precede or follow,
19:07marked by a different tone,
19:10centering around the Last Supper,
19:11in which Judas now having gone out,
19:15the love of Jesus to his disciples is poured forth,
19:19with a tenderness previously unseen.
19:23In these chapters,
19:25we have a first narrative in which the love of Jesus is related,
19:29as it appears in the foot washing and in the institution of the supper,
19:34and immediately afterwards a pause.
19:39This pause,
19:41chapter 13, verse 31,
19:43chapter 17,
19:45together with the narrative preceding it,
19:47occurs at the close of a struggle substantially finished.
19:52I glorified you on the earth,
19:54having accomplished the work which you gave me to do.
19:58I'd only get again to burst out in one final and unsuccessful effort
20:03against the Prince of Life.
20:09It would perhaps seem as if we have a similar structure at the point of the apocalypse now.
20:15There is a transition narrative which,
20:17so far as the thought in it is concerned,
20:20may be regarded either as closing the fourth or beginning the fifth section of the book.
20:26Perhaps it is better to understand it as the latter,
20:30because the mould of the gospel is better preserved this way.
20:34And where so much else speaks distinctly of the mould,
20:38there is no impropriety in giving the benefit of doubt
20:42to what is otherwise sufficiently established.
20:47Although, therefore, the fifth section of the apocalypse,
20:50the pause,
20:51properly begins with chapter 19, verse 11,
20:55the first ten verses may be taken along with these as a preparatory narrative,
21:01standing to what follows as John 13, 1 to 30 stands to John 13, 31 to chapter 17.
21:11The probability, too,
21:13that this is the light in which we are to look at the passage before us
21:16is rendered even greater when we notice, first of all,
21:20that there is, in the midst of the preliminary narrative,
21:25and for the first time mention made of supper,
21:28the marriage supper of the Lamb.
21:31And secondly, that at a later point in the book,
21:34there is a final outburst of evil against the church,
21:38which, notwithstanding the powerful forces ranged against her,
21:43is unsuccessful.
21:48What we now have to do is
21:51not consider a continuation of the struggle.
21:54It is a pause in which the fall of Babylon is celebrated
21:58and the enemies of the church
21:59are consigned to their merited fate.
22:05Babylon has fallen
22:06and the world represented by three classes of inhabitants.
22:11Kings, merchants, and sailors
22:13has poured out its lamentations over her fall.
22:17Very different are the feelings of the good
22:20and these feelings appear in the narrative before us.
22:24A great multitude is heard in heaven,
22:27not necessarily in the region beyond the grave,
22:30but in that of the righteous,
22:32of the unworldly,
22:34of the spiritual,
22:35whether in time or in eternity.
22:39This multitude is probably
22:43identifiable with that of
22:44Revelation 7 verse 9.
22:47The definitive article
22:49which would make this identification complete
22:52is
22:55wanting.
22:57But we have already found instances
22:59of the same method of speech
23:01with regard to the 144,000
23:04of chapter 14
23:07and with regard to the glassy sea
23:09of chapter 15.
23:12The whole ransomed church of God
23:14is therefore to be included
23:15in the expression.
23:17First they sing and the burden of their song
23:19is
23:20Alleluia or praise to God
23:22because he has inflicted upon the harlot
23:24the due punishment of her sins
23:27and crimes.
23:29Nor do they sing just once.
23:32They sing the same ascription of praise
23:35a second time.
23:38The meaning is not simply
23:40that they do this twice.
23:42The second time
23:43having more than its numerical force
23:46and being designed to bring out
23:48the intensity of their feelings
23:49and their song.
23:52Then the four and twenty elders
23:54the representatives of the glorified church
23:57and the four living creatures
23:59the representatives of the redeemed creation
24:02answer
24:03Amen
24:04and take up the same song
24:06All creation
24:08animate and inanimate
24:10swells the voice of joy and praise.
24:15But in the meantime
24:16the smoke of the harlot's torment
24:18goes up forever and ever.
24:21Again
24:21as we have seen before
24:23we have here no right
24:25to fasten our thoughts
24:26upon immortal spirits of men
24:29deceived and led astray
24:32Such may be included
24:34if they have identified themselves
24:36with the harlot
24:37we do not hesitate
24:39to say that they are included
24:42but what we are mainly brought
24:44to realize
24:45is the overthrow
24:47both complete and final
24:48of sin itself.
24:51Babylon
24:51has been completely overthrown
24:54Her punishment
24:56will never be forgotten
24:57Her fate
24:59will remain a monument
25:01of the righteous judgment of God
25:03and shall illustrate
25:05to the ages of the ages
25:07the character of him
25:09who for creation's sake
25:10will by no means
25:12clear the guilty.
25:17A voice from heaven
25:18is then heard
25:19calling upon the servants of God
25:21to praise him.
25:23This is followed by another voice
25:25as though it were
25:26the voice of a great multitude
25:28and that's the voice
25:29of many waters
25:30as the voice of mighty thunder
25:32saying
25:33Alleluia
25:34for the Lord our God
25:36the Almighty reigns
25:38He always indeed
25:40really reigned
25:42but now
25:43He has taken to Himself
25:44His great power
25:46and everything
25:47and every body
25:48acknowledges
25:49its King
25:51And so a new moment
25:53is reached
25:54in the history
25:54of God's saints
25:55The Lamb has come
25:57to claim His bride
25:59and His wife
25:59and His wife
26:00has made herself ready
26:03She has been long betrothed
26:05and had been waiting
26:06for the bridegroom
26:07Through storm and calm
26:09through sorrow and joy
26:10through darkness and light
26:12She has waited for Him
26:13crying ever and again
26:15Come quickly
26:18At last He comes
26:20And the marriage
26:21and the marriage supper
26:22are due to take place
26:26For the first time
26:27in the apocalypse
26:28we read of this marriage
26:29and for the first time
26:30although the general idea
26:32of supping with the Lord
26:34had been once alluded to
26:37this marriage supper
26:39The figure indeed
26:41is far from being new
26:43The writers of both
26:45the Old and the New Testament
26:46use it
26:47with remarkable frequency
26:50But no sacred writer
26:52appears to have felt more
26:54the power and beauty
26:56of the similitude
26:57than St. John
27:00In the first miracle
27:02which he records
27:03and in which he sees
27:04the whole glory
27:05of the New Testament
27:06dispensation
27:07mirrored in front of him
27:08He who changed the water
27:10into wine
27:11is the bridegroom
27:13of his church
27:15When the Baptist
27:16passes out of view
27:17in the presence of him
27:18for whom he had
27:20prepared the way
27:21he records the
27:23swan-like song
27:23in which the great prophet
27:25terminated his mission
27:26in order that another
27:28and higher than he
27:29might have the sole
27:31possession of the field
27:33You yourselves
27:34bear me witness
27:35that I said
27:36I am not the Christ
27:37but that I am sent
27:39before him
27:40He that has the bride
27:42is the bridegroom
27:43but the friend
27:44of the bridegroom
27:45who stands and hears him
27:47rejoices greatly
27:48because of the bridegroom's voice
27:53This my joy
27:55therefore is fulfilled
28:00Thus made ready
28:02the bride now
28:03enters with the bridegroom
28:04into the marriage feast
28:05and as the whole
28:07of her future
28:08rises before the view
28:09of the heavenly
28:10visitant
28:10who converses
28:12with the seer
28:12he says to him
28:14Write
28:15Blessed are they
28:17which are bidden
28:18to the marriage supper
28:19of the Lamb
28:24Once before
28:25St John
28:27had heard a similar
28:28and perhaps the same
28:30voice from heaven
28:31saying
28:32Blessed are the dead
28:33which die in the Lord
28:34from now on
28:37Then we believed
28:38Now we see
28:39The clouds are dispelled
28:42The veil is rent
28:43asunder
28:44We enter into the palace
28:46of the great King
28:48There is music
28:49festivity
28:50and joy
28:53There is neither sin
28:55nor sorrow
28:56privilege abused
28:57nor cloud
28:58upon any countenance
28:59no burden
29:00upon any heart
29:01no shadow
29:02from the future
29:03to darken
29:04the rapture
29:04of the present
29:05Here is life
29:06and life
29:07in abundance
29:08The peace
29:10that passes
29:11understanding
29:11The joy
29:12unspeakable
29:13and glorified
29:14The inheritance
29:15incorruptible
29:16undefiled
29:18and unfading
29:21In particular
29:22when we think
29:23of this marriage
29:24supper of the Lamb
29:25we cannot
29:26but return
29:27to the supper
29:28in the upper
29:29chamber of Jerusalem
29:30which occupies
29:32so strikingly
29:33a similar
29:34a position
29:35in the life
29:36of Jesus
29:36There Jesus
29:38would say
29:39Take heat
29:40This is my body
29:41which is given
29:42for you
29:42This cup
29:44is the new covenant
29:45in my blood
29:46drink you
29:47always
29:49That was a feast
29:50in which he gave himself
29:52to be forever
29:52the nourishment
29:53of his church
29:55In the same way
29:57in the marriage
29:58supper of the Lamb
29:59the Lord
29:59who became dead
30:00and is alive
30:01forevermore
30:02is not only
30:02the bridegroom
30:03but also
30:04the substance
30:06of the feast
30:08in him
30:09in him
30:09and by him
30:10his people
30:11lived on earth
30:14In him
30:15and by him
30:15they will live
30:17forever
30:19all this
30:20St. John
30:21saw
30:21all this
30:22too
30:23he heard
30:24confirmed
30:24by the statement
30:25that wonderful
30:26and glorious
30:27as was the spectacle
30:28it was yet
30:30true words
30:30of God
30:33he was overwhelmed
30:34and would have
30:35worshipped
30:36his angelic
30:37host
30:38but he was
30:39interrupted
30:40by the declaration
30:41of the angels
30:42part
30:42Do not do it
30:43for I am a fellow
30:44servant with you
30:45and with your brothers
30:46that hold to the
30:47testimony of Jesus
30:49Worship God
30:51These fellow servants
30:53are the first prophets
30:54but then also
30:55all true members
30:56of Christ's body
30:58The last
30:59not less than the first
31:00hold to the testimony
31:02of Jesus
31:04And because they do
31:05they too are prophets
31:06For prophecy
31:08whether in Old
31:09or New Testament times
31:10gives witness to him
31:12In him all
31:13revelation
31:14is centered
31:15He is the expression
31:17of the God
31:18whom no man
31:19has seen
31:20He is therefore
31:21the Alpha
31:22and the Omega
31:23over all
31:24God blessed
31:25forever
31:29And by so
31:30contemplating him
31:31we are prepared
31:32for the next
31:33vision
31:35I saw the heavens
31:36opened
31:36and behold
31:37the white horse
31:38and he sat
31:39thereon
31:40called faithful
31:41and true
31:42In righteousness
31:43he will judge
31:45and make war
31:46His eyes
31:47are a flame of fire
31:48and upon his head
31:50are many diadems
31:52He has a name
31:53written
31:53which no man knows
31:55but only himself
31:57He is arrayed
31:58in a garment
31:59sprinkled with blood
32:00and his name
32:01is called
32:02the Word of God
32:04The armies
32:05which are in heaven
32:06followed him
32:07upon white horses
32:08clothed in fine linen
32:10white and pure
32:11out of his mouth
32:13proceeds a sharp sword
32:15and with it
32:16he will smite
32:17the nations
32:18and rule them
32:19with a rod of iron
32:20He treads
32:21the winepress
32:22of the fierceness
32:23of the wrath
32:24of Almighty God
32:25He has
32:26on his garment
32:27and on his thigh
32:29a name
32:30written
32:30King of Kings
32:32and Lord of Lords
32:43of the position
32:45of this passage
32:45in the structure
32:46of the apocalypse
32:48we have already
32:49spoken
32:51looking at it
32:52in its true light
32:53it may be called
32:54the pause of victory
32:56there is
32:57no renewal
32:58of the struggle
32:59a warrior
33:00is indeed
33:01presented to us
33:02but he is a warrior
33:03who has already
33:04conquered
33:05and who comes forth
33:06not so much
33:06to subdue his enemies
33:08as to inflict
33:09upon them
33:10their ultimate
33:11punishment
33:13Heaven
33:13is open
33:14and our attention
33:16is first of all
33:17directed
33:17to a rider
33:18upon a white horse
33:20The description
33:21given
33:22of this rider
33:23leaves us
33:24in no doubt
33:25as to who
33:25he is
33:27The whiteness
33:29of the horse
33:29is the emblem
33:30of a purity
33:31that can be connected
33:32with the kingdom
33:33of God alone
33:35The description
33:36of the rider
33:37faithful
33:38will not suffer
33:40one word
33:40that he has promised
33:41to fail
33:43True
33:44not true
33:44as opposed to false
33:46but real
33:47as opposed to
33:47shadowy
33:48corresponds only
33:50to something
33:50essentially divine
33:51and while the particulars
33:54of his appearance
33:54afterwards
33:55mentioned
33:56take us back
33:57to the glorified
33:58son of man
33:59of chapter 1
34:00and to the other
34:02passages of this
34:03and other books
34:04of the Bible
34:04which speak
34:06in the same way
34:07of the same
34:08glorious person
34:10There are the eyes
34:11like a flame
34:12of fire
34:12in Revelation 1
34:14and Revelation 2
34:16There are upon
34:17his head
34:18many diadems
34:19a fact not
34:21previously mentioned
34:22but corresponding
34:24to the many
34:24royalties
34:25which belong
34:26to him
34:26who
34:28all things
34:29obey
34:31There is the name
34:32which none
34:33but he himself knows
34:34for no one
34:36knows the son
34:36except the father
34:40There is the garment
34:41sprinkled with blood
34:42of which we read
34:43in the prophet Isaiah
34:44the blood
34:45not that of the conqueror
34:47shed for us
34:47but the blood
34:48of his enemies
34:48staining his raiment
34:50as he returns
34:52victorious
34:53from the field
34:55Then there is the name
34:57the word of God
34:58with which John alone
35:00has made us familiar
35:01in the opening
35:02of his gospel
35:04There are the armies
35:06which are in heaven
35:07following him
35:08upon white horses
35:09clothed in fine linen
35:11pure and white
35:13to which our attention
35:15is directed
35:15but not for their sake
35:17but for his
35:18for he has made them
35:20share us
35:21in his victory
35:23There is the sharp sword
35:25proceeding from his mouth
35:27that we read in
35:28chapter 1
35:29and chapter 2
35:30There is the smiting
35:32of the nations
35:33which we read in
35:34chapter 2
35:35and chapter 12
35:37There is the treading
35:38of the winepress
35:39of the fierceness
35:40of the wrath
35:40of almighty God
35:42which we find
35:43in Revelation 14
35:45And finally
35:47there is on his garment
35:48and upon his thigh
35:49the name
35:50King of kings
35:51and Lord of lords
35:54All these traits
35:55leave us in no doubt
35:57who this captain
35:58of salvation is
35:59and all are noted
36:01that we may better
36:02understand
36:03both the glory
36:03of his person
36:04and the nature
36:06of his completed work
36:12One thing
36:13therefore
36:13remains
36:14that the great
36:16adversaries
36:16of his people
36:17shall be consigned
36:18to their doom
36:19and to this
36:21the seer
36:22proceeds
36:24I saw an angel
36:25standing
36:26in the sun
36:26He cried out
36:28with a loud voice
36:29saying to all the birds
36:30that fly in the heavens
36:31Come and be gathered
36:33to the great supper
36:34of God
36:35so you may eat
36:36the flesh of kings
36:37the flesh of captains
36:38and the flesh
36:39of mighty men
36:40the flesh of horses
36:42and those who sit
36:43upon them
36:44indeed the flesh
36:46of all men
36:46both free
36:47and bond
36:48small and great
36:51I saw the beast
36:52and the kings
36:53of the earth
36:53together with their
36:55armies gathered together
36:56to make war
36:57against the one
36:58who sat upon the horse
36:59and against his army
37:02the beast
37:03was taken
37:03and the one
37:04that was with him
37:05the false prophet
37:07that brought the signs
37:08in his sight
37:09where he deceived
37:10one
37:11as it received
37:12the mark
37:13of the beast
37:14and them
37:15that worshipped
37:16his image
37:18the two were cast
37:19alive
37:19into the lake of fire
37:20that burns
37:21with brimstone
37:23and the rest
37:24were killed
37:25with the sword
37:25of the one
37:26who sat on the horse
37:28even the sword
37:29which came
37:29from his mouth
37:31and all the birds
37:33were filled
37:33with their flesh
37:38the angel
37:38seen at the beginning
37:41at this scene
37:42is the first
37:43of the three
37:44forming the second
37:45group
37:45of that series
37:47of seven parts
37:48of which the
37:49triumphant conqueror
37:50was the centre
37:52he stood in the sun
37:53which is to be
37:54thought of
37:55as in the zenith
37:56of its daily path
37:57in order that
37:58he may be seen
37:59and heard
38:00by all the world
38:02it is to the birds
38:04that fly in the heavens
38:05that he calls
38:06that is to the strong
38:07and fierce birds
38:09of prey
38:09such as the eagle
38:11and the vulture
38:12which fly
38:13in the highest regions
38:15of the atmosphere
38:22his cry
38:23is that they shall come
38:24come to the great supper
38:25of the lord
38:27that they might feast
38:29upon the flesh
38:30of the lamb's enemies
38:33the idea of such a feast
38:35is found
38:35in the prophecies
38:37of ezekiel
38:38and there can be noted
38:38from the many
38:40accompanying circumstances
38:41of similarity
38:42between them
38:43it's here
38:44and there
38:45that john
38:46has the language
38:47of the prophet
38:48in his mind
38:50you are the son of man
38:52thus said the lord god
38:54speak to the birds
38:56of every sort
38:56and to the beasts
38:58of the field
38:58assemble
38:59come
38:59gather yourselves
39:01on every side
39:02to my sacrifice
39:03that i do sacrifice
39:04for you
39:06even a great sacrifice
39:07upon the mountains
39:08of israel
39:09that you may eat flesh
39:11and drink blood
39:12indeed
39:13you shall eat the flesh
39:15of the mighty
39:15and drink the blood
39:16of the princes
39:17of the earth
39:18rams
39:19lambs
39:19goats
39:20bullocks
39:20and all of the fallings
39:22of bashan
39:23you shall eat fat
39:25until you are full
39:26and drink blood
39:27until you are drunk
39:28of my sacrifice
39:29which i have sacrificed
39:31for you
39:32and you will be filled
39:34at my table
39:34with horses
39:35and chariots
39:36with mighty men
39:37and all the men of war
39:38said the lord god
39:46and yet
39:46while the picture
39:48of the prophet
39:48is unquestionably
39:50before the seer's mind
39:52it is impossible
39:53to doubt
39:54that we have
39:55in this supper
39:55a travesty
39:57of that marriage
39:58upper of the lamb
39:59which had been spoken
40:01of in the previous part
40:02of the chapter
40:04in contrast
40:06with the joyful banquet
40:07at which the children
40:08of god
40:08shall be nourished
40:09by the one
40:10whose flesh is meat
40:11indeed
40:12and whose blood
40:14is drink
40:15indeed
40:15the wicked
40:17to whatever rank
40:18or station
40:19they belong
40:19shall themselves
40:20be a meal
40:21for all foul
40:22and ravenous birds
40:26the whole passage
40:27reminds us
40:28of the spectacle
40:29at calvary
40:29as it is said
40:31before us
40:31in john's gospel
40:33and may be accepted
40:35as one of the innumerable
40:36proofs of the similarities
40:38of the two books
40:39the gospel
40:40and the apocalypse
40:41at first sight
40:43so different
40:43from each other
40:45on the cross
40:47jesus is the true
40:48paschal lamb
40:50not so much
40:51as in the moment
40:52of its death
40:52as at a subsequent stage
40:54when it was prepared
40:56for and eaten
40:57at
40:58the paschal meal
41:00in the conduct
41:01of the jews
41:01on that occasion
41:02saint john
41:03appears to behold
41:04an inverted
41:05and contorted
41:06passover
41:08the enemies
41:09of jesus
41:10had not entered
41:11into the judgment
41:12hall of pilate
41:13lest they be defiled
41:15but that they might
41:16eat the passover
41:18they had not
41:20eaten it
41:20then
41:21amidst the tumult
41:23and stormy passions
41:24of that dreadful morning
41:25when did they have
41:27the opportunity
41:27to eat it
41:29john does not tell us
41:31that they found one
41:33rather is the whole
41:34narrative so constructed
41:35so full of
41:36close rapid
41:37and passionate
41:38action
41:39that it is impossible
41:40to fix upon any point
41:42at which we could
41:43insert their eating
41:45until it was too late
41:46to make it legal
41:49might it not be
41:50they found no opportunity
41:51for eating at all
41:53and so they lost
41:54their passover
41:57lost it
41:58no
41:59the evangelist tells us
42:00they found the passover
42:03go with me to the cross
42:04mark there
42:05their cruel mockeries
42:07of the lamb of god
42:08and you will see
42:09the righteous dealings
42:10of the almighty
42:11as he makes these mockeries
42:13take the shape
42:14of a passover
42:15of judgment
42:16a passover
42:17of added sin
42:18and deepened shame
42:22the writer has endeavoured
42:24to unfold this view
42:26of jesus on the cross
42:28the punishment of the wicked
42:30and especially of the three
42:32great enemies of the church
42:33now proceeds
42:36it ought still
42:37to be carefully observed
42:39what we have to do
42:40with punishment
42:40not war
42:42or overthrow in war
42:44it was so
42:46here
42:46in verse 17
42:48where after the
42:49triumphing
42:51conqueror
42:52has ridden forth
42:53followed by his army
42:54there is no mention
42:55of any battle
42:56there is only the cry
42:58of the angel
42:59to the birds
42:59to gather themselves
43:01for the supper
43:03the battle
43:04had already been fought
43:05and the victory won
43:07we are told now
43:09indeed
43:09of the gathering
43:10together of the beast
43:11and the kings
43:11of the earth
43:12and their armies
43:13to make war
43:14against him
43:15that sat on the horse
43:16and against his army
43:19but whatever may have
43:20been their design
43:21it is not what happened
43:22for no fighting
43:24is spoken of
43:26the enemies referred to
43:27are at once taken
43:29apparently without
43:30resistance
43:31being consigned
43:33to the fate
43:33which they have brought
43:34upon themselves
43:39true of the great
43:40enemies
43:41of the lord
43:42and of his church
43:43meet this fate
43:45the beast
43:46and the false prophet
43:48the first of these
43:49is the beast
43:50so frequently mentioned
43:52in previous chapters
43:54more particularly
43:55it is the beast
43:56of chapter 17
43:57the representative
43:59of the anti-christian world
44:01in its last
44:01and highest form
44:04the second
44:05is not less certainly
44:06the second beast
44:07of chapter 18
44:08of whom it is said
44:10that he deceives
44:11the ones who dwell
44:11on the earth
44:12by reasons
44:13of the signs
44:14which it was given
44:16him to do
44:16in the sight
44:17of the beast
44:18saying to the ones
44:19that dwell on the earth
44:20that they should make
44:21an image
44:22of the beast
44:24the signs
44:25the deception
44:25and the worship
44:27of the beast
44:27now spoken of
44:28can be no other
44:30than those
44:31thus referred to
44:35we may note
44:36one further point
44:37here
44:38according to what
44:39seems to be
44:39the best reading
44:40of the original
44:41Greek
44:41we are told here
44:42that not
44:43that the beast
44:45was taken
44:46and with him
44:46the false prophet
44:48but that the beast
44:50was taken
44:51and that he
44:52who was with him
44:53the false prophet
44:55in other words
44:56the language
44:57of St. John
44:57is designed
44:58to bring up
44:59the closeness
44:59of connection
45:00between the two beasts
45:01the fact that the one
45:03is dependent
45:03upon the other
45:04they are never separated
45:06the first cannot live
45:08without the second
45:09hence in all probability
45:11the reason why
45:12in the treating
45:13of the doom
45:14by which these enemies
45:15of the church
45:16are overtaken
45:16a separate paragraph
45:18is not assigned
45:20to each
45:21for they are taken
45:22together
45:23and dealt with
45:23together
45:27but a more important
45:28question
45:29has been raised
45:30in connection
45:30the words
45:31we seem to hear
45:33it has been urged
45:35that they conclusively
45:36prove that both
45:37the beast
45:37and the false prophet
45:38are people
45:39and not personifications
45:43we have already seen
45:44that in regard
45:45to the beast
45:45that conclusion
45:46is hasty
45:48it appears
45:49to be
45:50no less the case
45:51in respect
45:52of the false prophet
45:54the simple fact
45:55that he deceives them
45:56that is
45:57all that had received
45:59the mark of the beast
46:00is inconsistent
46:01with such an idea
46:03unless we ascribe
46:05to him
46:05a ubiquitous
46:07that is divine
46:09or unless we suppose
46:10that scripture gives us
46:12no warrant for believing
46:13that there is in the realm
46:15of evil
46:15a personal trinity
46:17dragon beast
46:18and false prophet
46:20corresponding to
46:21the trinity
46:22of father
46:23son
46:23and holy spirit
46:26it is perhaps
46:27far more natural
46:28to think
46:28that st john's
46:29statements upon this point
46:31spring
46:32from the general
46:33method of conception
46:34which distinguishes him
46:35and by which everything
46:37existing in the realm
46:39of god
46:39is thought of
46:40as having its counterpart
46:41in the realm
46:43of evil
46:44the question
46:45raised therefore
46:46is wholly independent
46:47of any consideration
46:48of the fate
46:50by which the two beasts
46:51are overtaken
46:54where principles
46:55are viewed
46:55as persons
46:56they must be spoken
46:57of as persons
46:58and it will surely
47:00not be urged
47:01that death
47:02than hades
47:02our persons
47:03because it is said
47:05of them in revelation
47:0620
47:06that they are cast
47:08into the lake of fire
47:13i'd say the beast
47:14and the false prophet
47:15are cast together
47:17in the lake of fire
47:18that burns with sulfur
47:19and this lake of fire
47:21is explained further
47:22in chapter 20
47:24to be the second death
47:28it is impossible
47:29then to avoid
47:30the questions
47:32what is this
47:33lake of fire
47:34what is its effect
47:39and yet
47:39so far as the present
47:40concerns us
47:41the answer to these questions
47:42must be taken
47:43from St John alone
47:46in the first instance
47:47at least
47:48we have nothing to do
47:49with the general teaching
47:50of scripture
47:51or what is called
47:52the doctrine
47:53of eternal punishment
47:56our only inquiry
47:57must surely be
47:58what impression
48:00is the language
48:01employed by the seer
48:02in these visions
48:04intended to convey
48:07up until this point
48:09it would seem
48:09that there can be
48:10little doubt
48:11to St John
48:12it is no matter
48:13of consequence
48:14to tell us
48:15what will be the condition
48:16of the enemies
48:17of the church
48:18throughout the ages
48:19of the future
48:21whether they shall be
48:22preserved
48:23everlastingly alive
48:24and in torment
48:25misery and woe
48:28his one aim
48:29is to deal
48:30with the condition
48:31of the kingdom of God
48:32while it contends
48:34with its foes
48:35in this present scene
48:37his one object
48:38is to tell us
48:39that the foes
48:40will be destroyed forever
48:42that the world
48:43shall be wholly purged
48:45of them
48:46no further information
48:47is required
48:48to comfort us
48:50we may leave them
48:51safely and securely
48:53in the hands of God
48:58looking at the matter
48:59in this light
49:00we do not have to ask
49:01whether by the lake of fire
49:02we are to understand
49:04a lake into which
49:05the wicked are consumed
49:07or one in which
49:08they are upheld
49:09in undying flames
49:13either interpretation
49:15is consistent
49:16with the apostle's
49:17course of thought
49:18and with the impression
49:20he wishes
49:20to produce
49:22for us
49:24no doubt
49:25it may be said
49:26that the principle
49:27of contrast
49:28of which we have
49:29so often availed
49:30ourselves
49:31in interpreting
49:32this book
49:32implies that
49:34as the righteous
49:35shall be upheld
49:37amidst the joys
49:38of everlasting life
49:39so the wicked
49:40shall be upheld
49:41against the torment
49:42of everlasting death
49:45but
49:46it is precisely here
49:48that the peculiarity
49:49of St John's
49:50mode of thought
49:51comes in
49:53to him
49:53life is the very nature
49:55of the case
49:56everlasting
49:57were it not so
49:59it would not be life
50:01only therefore
50:02in so far as
50:03the concept
50:04of everlasting torment
50:05lies in the idea
50:07of death
50:07can it be truly said
50:09that the principle
50:09of contrast
50:10so deeply rooted
50:12in St John's
50:13mode of thought
50:14demands the application
50:16of everlasting torment
50:17to the wicked
50:20but the idea
50:21of torment
50:23everlastingly
50:24continued
50:25does not lie
50:26in the idea
50:27of death
50:27death
50:29is privation
50:30when inflicted
50:32by fire
50:33capacity
50:34for torment
50:34is speedily destroyed
50:36and death
50:37itself
50:38is cast
50:38into the lake
50:39of fire
50:42the natural
50:43conclusion
50:43is that the idea
50:44of torment
50:45belongs to the
50:46mode by which
50:47the death
50:47spoken of
50:48is inflicted
50:48in other words
50:50fire
50:50and that the words
50:52with which we are
50:53dealing
50:53may mean no more
50:54or less than this
50:56that the eternity
50:57of effect
50:58following the overthrow
50:59of the beast
51:00and the false
51:01prophet
51:01is a concept
51:03associated
51:04with the fire
51:05that burns
51:05with sulfur
51:06to which
51:07the great enemies
51:08of God's people
51:09are consigned
51:11no more
51:13and no less
51:16if that
51:17is correct
51:18then the whole
51:18question of the
51:19everlasting
51:20suffering of the
51:21wicked is left
51:21open
51:22so far as this
51:23passage
51:23is concerned
51:25St John's
51:26main lesson
51:27is that when the
51:28beast and the
51:29false prophets
51:29are cast into
51:30the lake of fire
51:31they no longer
51:32have power to
51:33make war against
51:34the righteous
51:34or even to
51:35disturb their
51:36peace
51:38when these two
51:39enemies of the
51:40church have been
51:40destroyed and the
51:41rest killed with
51:42the sword of the
51:43one who sat on
51:43the horse
51:44even the sword
51:45which came out
51:46of his mouth
51:48the people
51:49in this way
51:50called the rest
51:51are those who
51:53stand to the
51:53beast and the
51:54false prophet
51:55in the same
51:56relation as those
51:57that the rest
51:59of the woman's
52:00seed spoken of
52:01in chapter 12
52:02stands to the
52:03man-child
52:04caught up unto
52:06God and to
52:06his throne
52:09the man-child
52:10exalted and
52:11glorified is one
52:12and the same
52:13as the he who
52:14sat on the
52:14horse and in
52:16that condition
52:16a sword proceeds
52:18from his mouth
52:20the true guardian
52:21and protector of
52:22his own
52:23who has kept
52:24their true life
52:25safe amidst all
52:26the outward
52:27trouble
52:27brings these
52:28troubles once
52:30and for all
52:30to an end
52:32their enemies
52:33are killed
52:34they are not
52:35yet cast into
52:35the lake of fire
52:36because their
52:37hour of judgment
52:38has not yet
52:39come
52:39but by and
52:41by it comes
52:43meanwhile
52:44not only can
52:45they harm the
52:46righteous no
52:46more
52:47but they afford
52:48a supper to
52:49the ravenous
52:49birds already
52:50spoken of
52:52the birds
52:53are more than
52:54satisfied
52:54they are gorged
52:56with the unholy
52:57banquet
52:58all the birds
52:59were filled
53:00with their
53:01flesh
53:03glory be to
53:04the father
53:04and to the
53:05son and to
53:05the holy spirit
53:06as it was
53:07in the beginning
53:08is now
53:08and ever shall
53:09be
53:10world without
53:11end
