00:22Let us pray.
00:25Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when standing before Pilate, kept silent at all the unjust
00:34accusations and slanders of the Jews, and as a gentle lamb that did not open its mouth, did not contradict
00:42them when they brought forward their charges against you.
00:46Give me grace never to be disturbed by the false accusations of others, but may I overcome every injury by
00:53silence and meekness.
00:55Give me the grace of perfect humility, so that I may never desire praise nor refuse any measure of contempt.
01:04Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, you, lamb without spot, against whom the pious Pharisees and scribes
01:14raged with obstinate hatred.
01:17For although Pilate testified that he found no cause of death in you, yet they would not be satisfied with
01:24anything except your death.
01:28Grant me grace to imitate your innocence and patience, that I may both lead a godly life, and for so
01:36doing, if I am spoken of evenly, that I may remain at rest in you, giving way to no indignation,
01:45but giving thanks to you in all adversity.
01:50Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who will lead in the greatest of indignity, in the manner
01:59of a wicked criminal, through the middle of the city, from one judgment seat to another, and from Pilate to
02:06Herod and back again, amidst the noise and shouts of the people.
02:11Give me grace never, nor to be exasperated by slander, nor to be exasperated by slander, may I never feel
02:20any false shame at being despised, but may I receive everything in meekness, and endure all things in silence for
02:28your honor, that, by the assistance of your grace, I may in patience possess my soul.
02:36Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when Herod asked you many vain and foolish questions, and
02:44when you were falsely wounded in different ways by priest and scribe, humbly kept a meet and becoming silence.
02:53Give me grace to restrain my tongue in a manner well pleasing to you, do not permit me to utter
03:00hurtful words, do not permit me to be taken up with fruitless stories, but give me grace to say what
03:07is right, profitable, and honest, according to your will.
03:13May I behold the sin of evil speaking, and be always glad to think and speak well of any man.
03:23Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who condemned by your silence the foolish curiosity of Herod, and
03:31who would not gratify his curious eyes by the performance of any miracle, because he did not have his own
03:39salvation at heart,
03:40and did there in this way teach us to avoid all ostentation before the great ones of this world, pour
03:50into my heart a spirit of deep humility, mortify and quench within me any desire for vain glory.
03:58Grant that I may never do anything in order to gain praise of man, but may always act with a
04:04single eye upon the glory of your most holy name, and may come before you day by day in a
04:11true spirit of humility and meekness.
04:17Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who didn't refuse to be set to nothing by Herod and
04:24his men of war, nor to be clothed in a white garment and to be mocked and laughed at as
04:30though a fool and a madman.
04:32Give me grace, O Lord, to choose rather to be an outcast with you than to be glorious in the
04:38world.
04:39May I think it better and more honorable to suffer reproach for your name than to prosper in the vain
04:46honors of the world.
04:49Give me grace that, truly acknowledging my own sins and my own unworthiness, I may be as nothing in my
04:56own sight, but may always despise and accuse myself and daily lament over my own weakness and wretchedness.
05:06Praise, honor, and glory be to you, O Christ, who was sent back with shame, clothed in a false garment,
05:12from Herod the Pilate, and in all things obeyed your enemies going backwards and forwards according to their pleasure.
05:20Grant that I may not shrink from being despised, nor refuse obedience even to those who wish nothing but bad
05:29for me.
05:31Give me grace to have no feelings for the things of this world, but to think of and care for
05:37and love you alone.
05:39May you alone be my honor, my delight, my love, my glory, and my joy. Amen.
05:50O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths will sing your praise.
06:02O be joyful in the Lord, open our lips, turn the Lord with gladness, and come in all his presence
06:16with your song.
06:19Be sure that the Lord, he is God.
06:25He is seated in the Lord with praise.
06:30We are his people, and the sheep of his gospel.
06:38To coat your face with grace.
06:43And to his daughters with praise.
06:48Be thankful unto him, and speak to the Lord of his name.
06:58For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting,
07:07and his truth endureth from generation to generation.
07:20Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost,
07:32as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,
07:41world without end. Amen.
07:50Amen.
08:02Blessed is the man that hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly,
08:10No stood in the way of sinners
08:16And hath not sat in the seat of the sky full
08:23But his delight is in the law of the Lord
08:29And in his glory exorcised himself day and night
08:40And he shall be like a tree mounted by the water's side
08:46That will bring forth his rotten new season
08:54His lead for to shall not we know
08:59And look what the effort he doeth it shall prosper
09:10As worthy and worthy it is not so in heaven
09:16But they are like the chaff
09:20Which the wind scattereth away from the face of the earth
09:29Where holy and holy shall not be able to shine in the darkness
09:38Thine of the sinners in the congregation of the righteous
09:45But the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous
09:53And the way of the apostles shall perish
10:00Glory be to the Father
10:04And to the Son
10:07And to the Holy Ghost
10:12As it was in the beginning
10:16Is now and ever shall be
10:41A reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke chapter 2
10:46It came about in those days
10:48That an order went out from Caesar Augustus
10:51That there was to be a numbering of all the world
10:55This was the first numbering which was made
10:57When Quirinius was ruler of Syria
11:01All men went to be numbered
11:03Every one to his town
11:05Joseph went up from Galilee
11:07Out of the town of Nazareth
11:09Into Judea
11:10To Bethlehem
11:12The town of David
11:14Because he was of the house and family of David
11:17To be put on the list with Mary
11:19His future wife
11:20Who was about to become a mother
11:25While they were there
11:26The time came for her to give birth
11:27And she had her first son
11:30Folding him in linen
11:31She put him to rest in the place
11:33Where the cattle had their food
11:35Because there was no room for them in the inn
11:40In the same country
11:41There were keepers of sheep in the fields
11:43Watching over their flock by night
11:46An angel of the Lord came to them
11:48And the glory of the Lord
11:49Was shining all around them
11:52Fear came upon them
11:53But the angel said
11:54Have no fear
11:55For truly I give you good news of great joy
11:58Which will be for all the people
12:01For on this day in the town of David
12:03A saviour has come to birth
12:05Who is Christ the Lord
12:07This is the sign
12:09You will see a young child
12:11Folded in linen
12:12In the place where the cattle have their food
12:16Suddenly there was with the angel
12:18A great band of spirits from heaven
12:21Giving praise to God and saying
12:23Glory to God in the highest
12:25And on the earth peace
12:26Among men with whom he is well pleased
12:32When the angels had gone away from them
12:34Into heaven
12:34The keepers of the sheep
12:36Said to one another
12:38Let us now go to Bethlehem
12:40And see this thing which has come about
12:44Which the Lord has made clear to us
12:47And they went quickly
12:49And saw Mary, Joseph and the child
12:51In the place where the cattle had their food
12:55When they saw it
12:56They gave them an account of the things
12:58Which had been said to them about the child
13:01All those to whose ears it came
13:03Were full of wonder
13:04At the things said by the keepers of the sheep
13:09Mary kept all these words in her heart
13:11And gave much thought to them
13:14Then the keepers of the sheep went back
13:16Giving glory and praise to God
13:18For all the things which had come to their ears
13:20And which they had seen
13:22As it had been said to them
13:26This is the word of the Lord
13:28Thanks be to God
13:34Two travellers coming up from Galilee
13:36Approached the city of David
13:39The knowledge they possessed of the event
13:41In which the glories of David's house
13:43Was culminating
13:44Must have invested every feature
13:46With a particular sacredness of interest
13:51Note Dean Stanley's description of Bethlehem
13:54On the crest of a ridge of black hills
13:56Terraced by vineyards
13:59As seen by Joseph and Mary
14:01What a stream of patriotic memories
14:03Matched with the inspirations
14:06Which spring from the sense of ancestry
14:08Must have flowed over their souls
14:11There is the scene of the notable gleaning
14:14Of the Gentile Moabites
14:16Who had accompanied Naomi
14:18From those mighty hills
14:20Which rear their pinnacles
14:21In the distance behind
14:25There Jesse with his seven stalwart sons
14:28Had lived
14:28In those fields and gorges
14:31The youngest of the seven
14:32Had learnt to sling his stones
14:34And sing his psalms
14:36Had been prepared
14:37For the future which lay before him
14:41From that city had come
14:43The mightiest of David's warriors
14:46Jacob
14:47Joab
14:47And Abishai
14:49And others
14:51And look
14:52There too by the gate
14:53Is the famous well of Bethlehem
14:55Of which David had longed to drink
14:59But faint as he was
15:01Would not
15:01Because the drawing of its water
15:03Had been at the cost of life
15:05Strength
15:06And blood
15:10Manifold is the appeal
15:11To the heart
15:12Of the pilgrims
15:13Who lowly as their condition is
15:15Are skions
15:16Of the Israel's royal house
15:20They are hearing the place
15:22Of which the prophecy
15:23Has said in Micah chapter 5
15:25Out of thee shall one come forth
15:27Unto me
15:28That is to be ruler in Israel
15:31Whose things
15:32Forth are from old
15:34From everlasting
15:38They know that the fulfillment
15:39Is at hand
15:41Where should they go
15:42It is high time
15:44That one should be at rest
15:45Shall they go to the inn
15:47The Kahn
15:48Or the Caravanserai
15:50See Faro's sketch
15:52That strange shelter
15:53For both man and beast
15:55For the inn is full
15:57There is no place in it
15:59Or such as they
16:00But the necessity
16:02Is urgent
16:04And their refuge
16:05According to a tradition
16:07Mentioned by Justin Martyr
16:08Is a grotto
16:09Or cave
16:10In the limestone rock
16:11On which the village stands
16:13Used as a stable
16:15For horses
16:15And a pen
16:16For cattle
16:18The horse's manger
16:19Will be the cradle
16:20For the king of kings
16:22Born there
16:23And thus
16:24The precise date
16:25Of the abert
16:26Is not apparently determinable
16:31From the limestone cavern
16:33We are taken by the evangelists
16:35To the long grassy slopes
16:36Which stretch down
16:38From the east
16:38Of the Jewish city
16:41Hidden in some nook
16:42Of these slopes
16:43Rested pious shepherds
16:46Shepherds have always been
16:48A meditative class of men
16:49Accustomed to the sweet silence
16:51Of nature
16:52And apart from the bustle
16:54And stir of its city
16:56Inviting to quiet communion
16:58With their own hearts
17:01It was seen
17:02That these shepherds
17:02Were men
17:03Of the spirit of Simeon
17:05They quickly understood
17:06The message
17:07Given to them
17:08Calmly and promptly
17:09They responded once
17:10As if
17:11It were the intimation
17:13Of that
17:14For which they had been waiting
17:17Let us go and see
17:20There they lie
17:21I nursed in devout
17:22And lonely thought
17:23Unaware of the myriad
17:25Myriads
17:25Of the shining
17:27That hover over them
17:28It is the moment
17:30Of a pause
17:31Of a hush
17:31In nature
17:32And look
17:33The angel of the Lord
17:35Comes to them
17:37In an instant
17:38A presence
17:38A glory
17:39Is around them
17:40And first
17:41Into their hearts
17:42Is poured the gospel
17:43For all the ages
17:47Of this gospel
17:48Note
17:49Its substance
17:50Born to you
17:51This gain
17:52God's gift
17:53To men
17:54To sinners
17:55Especially to those
17:56Who believe
17:57The saviour
17:58Which is Christ
17:59The anointed one
18:01He of whom
18:02The prophet spoke
18:03And of whom
18:04David
18:05The shepherd
18:06Of Israel
18:07Free figured
18:09Ascent
18:09Not by
18:12But from
18:12God
18:13From the depths
18:14Of the divine
18:15Personality
18:17The son
18:18From the bosom
18:19Of the father
18:20Himself
18:20Christ the Lord
18:22The Jehovah
18:23To whom
18:23Every knee
18:24Shall bow
18:25The ruler
18:26Who shall restore
18:27The lost
18:27And unite
18:28The scattered
18:29And fulfil
18:30The kingdom
18:31Which is righteousness
18:32And peace
18:33And joy
18:36Of the character
18:37Of this gospel
18:38Good tidings
18:40Of great joy
18:41The most blessed message
18:43Ever proclaimed
18:44One of unspeakable
18:46Blessedness
18:47A joy to which
18:49No bones can be set
18:51Which no geographical
18:53Limit can measure
18:54Which no thought of class
18:56Or race
18:56Or sect
18:57Can impitir
18:59Joy to all
19:00The world's people
19:05Of the sign
19:06Of the gospel
19:07A baby wrapped
19:08In swaddling clothes
19:10Lying in a manger
19:12The babe is the sign
19:14Of the kingdom
19:14It is the token
19:15Of the king
19:17Except you become
19:18As little children
19:19You shall in no way
19:20Enter into the kingdom
19:21Of heaven
19:25And now suddenly
19:26As the sign is given
19:27A blaze of song
19:28Spreads throughout
19:29The expanse
19:30Of heaven
19:31And like circles
19:32Whitening around
19:33Upon a clear blue river
19:36Orb after orb
19:38The wondrous sound
19:39Is echoed
19:40On forever
19:42Glory to God
19:43On high
19:44On earth
19:45Be peace
19:45And love
19:46Towards men
19:47Of love
19:48Salvation
19:49And release
19:53The announcement
19:54Of the birth
19:54Is made to shepherds
19:55But why were they
19:57Selected
19:58For this great honour
20:00Points of fitness
20:01May be traced
20:02Was not the first
20:04Blood of sacrifice
20:05Of Abel
20:06That of the keeper
20:08Of sheep
20:09Was not the chosen
20:10Type and earthly
20:11Root of the Christ
20:12A shepherd
20:12Taken from the sheepfold
20:15Is not one of the
20:16Favourite symbols
20:17Of the world's
20:18Saviour
20:18The good shepherd
20:20Is not the
20:21Saviour's work
20:21That of him
20:22Who leaves the ninety
20:23And nine
20:24And goes after the sheep
20:26Which is lost
20:28Of all earthly things
20:29Are not the pastoral
20:31Life and the spirit
20:32Of the nearest
20:32Correspondence
20:33To the life and spirit
20:35Of the incarnate
20:36Son of God
20:37And as to the gospel
20:39That was preached
20:40Is there not a truth
20:41In the quaint language
20:42Of the old writer
20:44It fell not out amiss
20:46That shepherds
20:47They were
20:47The news fitted them well
20:50It well agreed
20:51To tell shepherds
20:52Of the yearning
20:52Of a strange lamb
20:53Such a lamb
20:55As might take away
20:56The sin of the world
20:57Such a lamb
20:58As they might send
20:59To the ruler
21:00Of this world
21:01For oppressed
21:04Anyway
21:04It is not
21:06To supercilious Pharisee
21:07Nor to Sadducee
21:09Cold and dry as dust
21:10Not to aesthetic
21:12And separatist
21:13Not to Herodian
21:16Worldly and crafty
21:17Not to the mighty
21:19Or to the noble
21:19That the first tidings
21:21Of great joy
21:21Are brought
21:23The first preacher
21:24Is the heavenly angel
21:25And the first congregation
21:27Lowly simple men
21:29Who are doing
21:30Their duty
21:31In the place
21:31God has appointed to
21:35Thence comes
21:36The lesson to us
21:38Heaven is always
21:39Near to the dutiful
21:41Those who watch
21:42Faithfully
21:42What has been
21:43Given to their charge
21:44Not seeking
21:46Some great thing
21:47To do
21:48Not hurried
21:49And restless
21:50In their work
21:51But caring for the things
21:52Many or few
21:54Over which God
21:56Has placed them
21:57Are close to that gate
21:59Of the celestial kingdom
22:00Through which
22:01There peels
22:02The music
22:03Blessed are the pure in heart
22:05For they shall see God
22:10Two points in this portion
22:12Of the narrative
22:12May be considered
22:15First of all
22:16The conduct of the shepherds
22:17When the tidings
22:18Of the birth
22:18Were given to them
22:20On the withdrawal
22:21Of the heavenly vision
22:22They say
22:22Let us now go
22:24Even to Bethlehem
22:26And see this thing
22:28Which has come to pass
22:31The flocks are
22:32Somehow attended to
22:33This is a matter
22:35To be at once
22:36Attended
22:36A word of God
22:38A voice of the Holy Spirit
22:40In the heart
22:41A command or a duty
22:42Pertaining to the heavenly life
22:43Claims precedence
22:45Over all other claims
22:47Seek you first
22:48The kingdom of God
22:51Prompt obedience
22:52Is the way of blessing
22:54They came with haste
22:56Yes
22:57The king's business
22:58Requires haste
22:59Never delay
23:00Saint Paul
23:01Acted in the spirit
23:02Of the shepherds
23:03When
23:03God having been pleased
23:05To reveal his son
23:06In him
23:08Immediately
23:08He conferred not
23:10With flesh and blood
23:13And secondly
23:14The conduct of Mary
23:15The shepherds
23:17Eagerly recounted
23:18Their wonderful tale
23:19And all the people
23:20Who heard
23:20Wondered
23:22But Mary
23:23Kept all these sayings
23:25And pondered them
23:26In her heart
23:28The wonder of the people
23:30Soon passed away
23:32It was but
23:33As the morning cloud
23:34And the early morning dew
23:37Religious feelings
23:38Are conserved and deepened
23:40Through reflection
23:41And prayer
23:43Blessed secret
23:44The keeping and pondering
23:46In the heart
23:52Let us pray
23:55O Lord
23:56We pray
23:57That your grace
23:57May always
23:59Be present
24:00And follow us
24:01Making us
24:02Continually
24:03Given to all
24:04Good works
24:05Through Jesus Christ
24:07Our Lord
24:08Amen
24:14May the Lord bless us
24:16And keep us
24:17From all evil
24:18Bringing us
24:19To everlasting life
24:22Amen
