00:23Let us pray
00:26Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, from the cross, looked in upon your mother, overwhelmed with
00:34grief and tears, and so truly took compassion on her sorrow, commending her to the care of your disciple John,
00:42as also you commended John, and in him, all of us, to her maternal care.
00:50Grant me to love and honour your mother with the purest and most ardent love, that I may have her
00:57for my mother and be worthily acknowledged by her as her son.
01:02Grant that in every necessity, and especially at the hour of my death, I may find her ever present and
01:09at hand to help me.
01:13Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, with your wounds gaping and your head crowned with thorns,
01:20while hanging in misery upon the cross, declared that you were without any consolation.
01:29Grant that in all adversity and times of temptation and desolation, I may fly with faith to you, my most
01:37holy Father, and putting no confidence in myself, grant that I may place all my hopes in you alone, and
01:44entirely resign myself and trust in you.
01:48Wound my innermost soul, with the remembrance of your wounds, write and imprint them upon my heart, satiate me wholly
01:57with your blood, that all my intentions may be fixed in you alone, and that I may seek and find
02:03and hold you fast, possessing you for ever and ever.
02:09Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when your body was exhausted from the loss of blood,
02:16gasped for breath, and cried out on the cross that you were tormented with thirst, while you burnt with unspeakable
02:23desire for our salvation.
02:27Give me grace to thirst most ardently after your honour, and the salvation of souls, and be ready cheerfully to
02:35spend myself for them, according to your will.
02:40Grant that no love of any transitory object may possess my soul, that I may never attach myself to any
02:47creature, and that even when I am bound to love, I may love only in you.
02:53But give me grace to love you above all, and with my whole soul, and quietly to rest in you.
03:02Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when you were thirsty, even at the point of death,
03:09permitted a sponge filled with vinegar to be offered to you, and that by tasting this, you might make satisfaction
03:17for our gluttony, giving us an example of poverty.
03:22Grant me the grace to despise any unlawful pleasure and delight, and to avoid any excess in eating and drinking,
03:29and may I use with moderation and thanksgiving, whatever you do give me for the support of my poor body.
03:38So cleanse, I beg you, the taste of my heart, that it may relish nothing except that which is pleasing
03:44to you, and may find nothing but bitterness in whatever displeases you.
03:51Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, you, the greatest lover of the human race, who, when you
03:58were bringing out the work of our redemption to a close, brought yourself as a holy victim upon the altar
04:05of the cross for the sin of all mankind.
04:09May this be the only end, I beg you, of all my thoughts, words and works, namely, to seek your
04:17honour with an upright and sincere heart, and to desire nothing save you alone.
04:24Grant that I may never grow weary or lukewarm in your service, but a fervent spirit, always be ever renewed
04:31within me, that I may daily be more and more inflamed to love and praise you.
04:38Praise and honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who willingly underwent death, when commending yourself to your Father,
04:46and bending your adorable head, you gave up the ghost, and thus, by laying down your life for your sheep,
04:54showed yourself to be the Good Shepherd.
05:00You are dead, only begotten Son of God, you are dead, my beloved one, that I may live for ever.
05:06What hope, what confidence is laid up for me in your death and in your blood.
05:11I glorify you, I give you thanks as far as in me lies.
05:15Give me grace to die entirely, to sin, and all evil desires, and to live to you alone.
05:23May I think of you alone, may my understanding exercise itself in nothing except you,
05:30that, clad in your grace and with holy charity, I may soon after the close of this life come to
05:37you, the true paradise.
05:39O good Jesus, by your bitter passion and death, grant to me the living pardon and grace,
05:46and to the faithful departed rest and everlasting light.
05:50For his honour and glory be to you, O Christ, at his death the sun withdrew its light,
05:57and the veil of the temple was divided in two.
06:01The earth quaked, and the rocks were cut, and the graves opened.
06:07May the rays of your grace never leave me, I beg you, you son of righteousness.
06:14You that are my God, may they always lighten, even the very inmost recesses of my heart,
06:21that I may joyfully serve you for ever.
06:25Tear away from me the veil of hypocrisy,
06:28make the ground of my soul quake with saving penitence,
06:32rend in tomb this heart of stone of mine,
06:35that, being wholly renewed within,
06:39I may despise anything perishable,
06:41and love only the things that are of heaven.
06:45Amen.
06:49O Lord, open our lips,
06:52and our mouths shall sing your praise.
07:01O Lord, open our lips,
07:05O Lord, open our lips,
07:08serve the Lord with gladness,
07:12and come before His presence with a talk.
07:19He is sure that the Lord is God,
07:24which we see as have made us have lost by ourselves.
07:30We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
07:37O Lord, obey Him to His peace with mercy,
07:43and into His cross with grace.
07:48Be thankful unto Him and speak to the Lord of His name.
07:57O Lord, O Lord, is gracious,
08:01His mercy is everlasting,
08:06and His mercy is everlasting,
08:09and in truth and glory from generation to generation.
08:20Glory be to the Father,
08:24and to the Son,
08:27and to the Holy Ghost,
08:31As it was in the beginning, it's now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
09:12Amen.
09:29Amen.
09:58Amen.
10:25Amen.
11:00Amen.
11:33Amen.
11:58Amen.
12:19Amen.
12:46A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Luke, Chapter 3.
12:52Now in the fifteenth year of the rule of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being ruler of Judea and Herod being
13:00king of Galilee, his brother Philip king of the country of Atreira and Thraconetes, and Lysanias king of Abilene, when
13:10Annas and Carpas were the high priests, the word of the Lord came to John the son of Zechariah in
13:16the wasteland.
13:18He came into all the country around about Jordan, preaching baptism as a sign of forgiveness of sin for those
13:25whose hearts were changed.
13:28As it says in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,
13:32The voice of one crying in the wasteland, Make ready the way of the Lord, make his road straight.
13:39Every valley will be lifted up and all the mountains and hills made low, the twisted will be made straight
13:45and all the rough ways smooth, and all flesh will see the salvation of God.
13:54So he said to the people who went out to him for baptism,
13:58You, offspring of snakes, at whose word are you going in flight from the rock to come?
14:05Make it clear by your acts that your hearts have been changed, and do not say to yourselves,
14:10We have Abraham for our father.
14:13For I say to you that God is able from these stones to make children of Abraham.
14:19Even now the axe is put to the root of the trees,
14:22And every tree which does not have good fruit will be cut then and put away into the fire.
14:30The people put questions to him, saying,
14:32What are we to do?
14:36He answered and said to them,
14:39He who has two coats, let him give to him who has not even one.
14:44And he who has food, let him do the same.
14:49Then tax farmers came to him for baptism and said to him,
14:53Master, what have we to do?
14:55He said to them,
14:56Do not make an attempt to get more money than the right amount.
15:01Men of the army put questions to him, saying,
15:04And what have we to do?
15:06And he said to them,
15:08Do no violent act to any man,
15:10Nor do not take anything without right,
15:13And let your payment be enough for you.
15:17While the people were waiting,
15:18And all the men were questioning in their hearts about John,
15:21If he was the Christ or not,
15:23John made answer,
15:25Saying to them all,
15:27Truly, I give you baptism with water,
15:30But one is coming who is greater than I,
15:33Whose shoes I am not good enough to undo.
15:36He will give you baptism with the Holy Spirit and with fire,
15:39And in whose hand is the instrument with which he will make clean his grain.
15:46He will put the good grain in his store,
15:49But the waste will be burned in the fire,
15:52Which will never be put out.
15:55So comforting them with these and with other words,
15:58He gave the good news to the people.
16:02But Herod the king,
16:04Because John had made a protest on account of Herodias, his brother's wife,
16:08And all the other evil things which Herod had done,
16:12Did this most evil thing of all,
16:14And had John shut up in prison.
16:18Now it came about,
16:19When all the people had been given baptism,
16:21Jesus,
16:22Having had baptism with them,
16:24Was in prayer.
16:26When the heaven being opened,
16:28The Holy Spirit came down in the form of a dove,
16:30And a voice came from heaven saying,
16:33You are my dearly beloved son,
16:36With whom I am well pleased.
16:40Jesus at this time was about 30 years old,
16:43Being the son,
16:45As it appeared,
16:45Of Joseph,
16:46Son of Hades.
16:49This is the word of the Lord.
16:52Thanks be to God.
16:59This,
16:59The beginning of John's ministry,
17:02Marks a new period in the Bible,
17:03That's relating to the Messiah,
17:06For whom he was to prepare the way.
17:09From the time of his birth until this time,
17:12We have heard nothing of him,
17:14Other than he was living in the wilderness.
17:18Some translations refer to a desert,
17:21But in reality,
17:22We are most probably talking about
17:24The mountain scrubland,
17:25Of the Golan Heights,
17:27To the east of the Jordan.
17:31The list of people in government,
17:33Given by Luke,
17:34Enable us to precisely date this,
17:37But what is of more interest,
17:39Is the picture painted by these people.
17:43Tiberius had a wicked reputation,
17:46And so did Pontius Pilate,
17:49Who was eventually recalled to Rome,
17:51For incompetence,
17:52And disposed of accordingly.
17:55And then we have the three remaining children,
17:58Of Herod the Great.
17:59An unpleasant bunch of these,
18:01If ever there was.
18:03And also of interest,
18:04Is the fact that there were two,
18:05High Priests.
18:07Something that should never,
18:09Have happened.
18:12We do not know,
18:13Why there was an annual rotation,
18:15Between Annas and Caiaphas.
18:18Perhaps it had not been possible,
18:20To agree on who the new,
18:21High Priest should have been.
18:23And this was the most unfortunate,
18:26And unhappy compromise.
18:30So by way of background to John,
18:32We have the coming of the Messiah,
18:34Against the background of the Holy Land,
18:37Governed by disreputable foreigners.
18:40In the past,
18:42When the land had been occupied,
18:43Jewish governors had been appointed,
18:46But at this time,
18:47Under the Roman occupation,
18:49No such luxury had been afforded.
18:52To add insult to injury,
18:54The priesthood in Jerusalem,
18:56Was in disarray,
18:57And into this melting pot,
18:59Arrived John the Baptist.
19:04The process of becoming a Christian,
19:06Involves two stages.
19:08First of all,
19:09We need to be convinced,
19:10Of our sinful state.
19:12And then,
19:12Having been thus convinced,
19:14We need to desire,
19:15Forgiveness.
19:17We cannot go straight to stage two,
19:19Because unless we are convinced,
19:21Of the need for forgiveness,
19:23Why would we bother?
19:25If we thought we were doing okay,
19:27We wouldn't ask,
19:28For forgiveness.
19:31In this case,
19:32John has convinced the crowd,
19:34Their sin.
19:35To a man,
19:36They know,
19:37That they,
19:38As in all of us,
19:39Are sinful.
19:40And so they ask,
19:42What is it,
19:43That we should do?
19:46The answer they received,
19:47Was simple enough.
19:49Once they were baptised,
19:50They should share what they have,
19:52With those who are lacking.
19:53And we are given the example,
19:55Of clothes and food.
19:57Two of the four essentials,
19:58Of daily living.
20:01There was a special demand,
20:03From the tax collectors though,
20:04For they knew,
20:05That they were particularly wicked,
20:07Or were at least prone,
20:08To being so.
20:09For the Roman system,
20:10Allowed them to keep a commission,
20:12For the taxes they collected.
20:14So they would demand,
20:16More taxes than were due,
20:17In order to line their pockets.
20:21Also asking for help,
20:23Were the soldiers,
20:25And we assume,
20:26That these were,
20:27Herod's soldiers,
20:28Rather than Romans.
20:29But it is possible,
20:31Of course,
20:31That there were Romans,
20:32In the crowd.
20:34Soldiers were badly paid,
20:36Which meant,
20:36That they would always be looking,
20:38For ways to supplement,
20:39Their income,
20:40By extorting additional money,
20:42From the people they were governing.
20:46But John was not finished,
20:48No sooner had he dealt,
20:50With the questions,
20:51Than he moved on,
20:52To give them a dire warning,
20:53Of the time to come.
20:55The time when there would be,
20:56Assaulting of good,
20:57From bad.
20:58The time when the unproductive,
21:00Would be uprooted,
21:01And put to the fire of destruction,
21:03To make way for the fruitful.
21:06In all,
21:07The message was simple,
21:09But urgent.
21:10Much the same as it is now,
21:13Other than the fact,
21:14That we are now,
21:15Two thousand years closer,
21:17To the point of sorting.
21:21John had attracted,
21:22A great deal of attention,
21:24Upon himself,
21:24Through his ministry of baptism.
21:27In many ways,
21:28The time was right,
21:29For a mass conversion.
21:32A mass conviction,
21:33Of the sins of Israel,
21:34For many from all levels of society,
21:37Had been looking in hope,
21:39For the coming of the Messiah.
21:41First prophesied,
21:43Many hundreds of years earlier,
21:45There was an anticipation,
21:46Of something to come,
21:47To overthrow this hated,
21:49Roman occupation,
21:50And for a return,
21:51To the good old days,
21:53When Israel was free to sin,
21:55In peace.
21:57Indeed,
21:58John was universally,
22:00Recognised as a great prophet,
22:02Surprisingly enough,
22:03Even by Herod,
22:04With himself,
22:05For although he locked,
22:06John up in prison,
22:08We read elsewhere,
22:09That he had an interest in job,
22:11And was reluctant,
22:12To finish the deed,
22:14By putting him to death.
22:17John,
22:18For his part,
22:19Was anxious,
22:19Not to claim anything,
22:21For himself.
22:23We read,
22:24That he told the assembled crows,
22:26That one much greater than he,
22:27Was to come,
22:28Pointing to the Messiah himself.
22:32What is more,
22:33He would give a warning,
22:35For although the Messiah,
22:36Would baptise with the Holy Spirit,
22:39He would also come with fire,
22:41To burn the rubbish,
22:42To purify the storehouse.
22:44In other words,
22:45In other words,
22:45The wicked and repentant,
22:47Would be destroyed,
22:48Absolutely.
22:49This was it,
22:51At this time,
22:52They would not be taken away,
22:53Into captivity,
22:54They would be destroyed,
22:56Completely,
22:57Removed from the face of the earth,
22:59In its entirety.
23:03There then follows,
23:04A slight non sequitur,
23:06In that Luke tells us,
23:07Of the imprisonment of John,
23:09Before moving to the baptism,
23:11Of Jesus.
23:12For most obviously,
23:14The events happened,
23:15In the reverse order.
23:17However,
23:18There is some logic to this,
23:20As Luke had been writing,
23:21Of John,
23:22Before turning back to Jesus.
23:26Interestingly,
23:27We gain an insight,
23:28Into the humility of Jesus.
23:30He could have come,
23:31To the front of the queue,
23:32For baptism,
23:33After all.
23:34He was to be the guest of honour.
23:37But no,
23:38We read that he waited,
23:39Until all in the crowd,
23:40For that day,
23:41Had been baptised,
23:42And then he came,
23:43Quietly forward.
23:47Unlike those in the crowd,
23:48Jesus had no sin,
23:49And therefore no need of baptism.
23:52But he chose,
23:52To be baptised,
23:53To show his submission,
23:55To his father's will,
23:56And to mark the start,
23:57Of his ministry.
23:59It is almost as though,
24:01He was saying,
24:02Yes, father,
24:04It is time.
24:06To which came,
24:07The reply from heaven.
24:11Notice also,
24:12Yet again,
24:13That Jesus was in prayer,
24:14In the immediate aftermath,
24:16Of this baptism.
24:22Let us pray.
24:24O Lord,
24:25We pray that your grace,
24:27May always,
24:28Be present,
24:29And follow us,
24:31Making us continually,
24:32Given to all good works,
24:35Through Jesus Christ,
24:36Our Lord.
24:38Amen.
24:43May the Lord bless us,
24:45And keep us from all evil,
24:48Bringing us to everlasting life.
24:51Amen.
24:52Amen.
24:53Amen.
24:53Amen.
24:54Amen.
24:55Amen.
24:55Amen.
24:56Amen.
