00:22Let us pray.
00:26Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when you were given up to the will
00:32of your persecutors, suffered many torments when they took off the purple robe, which
00:37was stuck to your wounds, and put upon you your own clothes. Grant that after I have
00:44put off the clothing of this body, I may be clad with the robe of perfect charity, and
00:50that I may be adorned with your merit, and through your mercy be introduced as an adopted
00:57son into the heavenly inheritance.
01:01Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who in the midst of reproach and injury bore
01:07your cross with excessive pain on your sacred and cut shoulders. Wearied and panting for
01:14breath you toiled exceedingly under its heavy weight. Give me grace to take hold of the
01:20cross of self-denial with ardent devotion, and to imitate with the most fervent of charity
01:26the example of your virtues, and to follow you in humility even unto death.
01:35Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when you were led from the city with two
01:41thieves, did not refuse to be pressed upon and thrust, hastened and to be afflicted in
01:47many ways. Draw me after you, that I may quickly follow. Grant that for your sake I may entirely
01:55deny, forsake, and go out of myself. Give me grace to think of you alone and to find no joy,
02:02except in you, my Redeemer. Grant that I may love you alone, and may return love for love,
02:11may I earnestly seek after you, and live to you alone.
02:18Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who, when bowed down by the weight of your cross,
02:24at length reached the place of punishment, where, quite exhausted, they offered you wine mingled
02:32with gall. May you extinguish in me all gluttonous and carnal desire, giving me grace never to consent
02:41to any impure or unlawful pleasure. But may I take my food in moderation, to the glory of your name,
02:49and may hunger and thirst after you alone, and find no pleasure or gladness except in you.
02:58Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who was stripped before the gaze of all people on
03:04Mount Calvary, and the soreness of your wounds being increased by the removal of your clothing.
03:11You did not refuse to undergo, for my sake, the most dreadful pain. Grant that I may love the
03:19spirit of poverty, and never be disturbed by want or scarcity. Give me grace to bear patiently any
03:26difficulties or troubles in this life, for the glory of your name. Strip my heart of every vain fancy and
03:34affection. And grant me a holy intent with pious desires, renewing within me daily a most pure love
03:43for yourself. Praise, honour and glory be to you, O Christ, who gave himself up to be extended naked upon
03:52the wood of the cross, on the joints of your most holy limbs, to be wrenched apart, most cruelly nailed
03:59and
03:59fastened thereto. Then, for my sake, you suffered your most delicate hands and feet, to be most deeply wounded.
04:10Grant, O Lord, that I might remember, with a faithful and grateful heart, this your unspeakable charity,
04:19when you did of your own accord stretch out your hands to be bored and your feet to be pierced
04:25through.
04:26O Lord, enlarge and extend my heart by perfect love of you. Pierce it and fix it to yourself with
04:34the nail of
04:35your sweetest love. And shut up within yourself alone all my senses, all my thoughts and all my affections. Amen.
04:47O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
04:59O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall sing your praise.
05:09O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall clean up.
05:16O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall say precisely,
05:28O Lord says please, O Lord, open our lips, and what shall chez you?

10:04A reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke, chapter 2.
10:11Now Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem every year for the Feast of the Passover.
10:17When he was twelve years old they went up according to their custom.
10:22But when the feast was over, as they were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind
10:26in Jerusalem.
10:29His parents did not know it, but because they assumed he was in their group of travelers
10:34they went a day's journey.
10:37Then they began to look for him among their relatives and acquaintances.
10:43When they did not find him they returned to Jerusalem to look for them.
10:48After three days they found him in the temple courts sitting amongst the teachers, listening
10:53to them and asking them questions.
10:57All who heard Jesus were astonished at his understanding and his answers.
11:03When his parents saw him they were overwhelmed.
11:06His mother said to him,
11:08Child, why have you treated us like this?
11:11Look, your father and I have been looking for you most anxiously.
11:16But he replied, Why were you looking for me?
11:20Didn't you know that I would be in my father's house?
11:25Yet his parents did not understand the remark he made to them.
11:30Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them.
11:34But his mother kept all these things in her heart.
11:39Jesus increased in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and people.
11:47This is the word of the Lord.
11:49Thanks be to God.
11:54Surely this has to be every parent's nightmare.
11:58The sudden realization that a child is missing is not there.
12:04Followed by an eternity of frantic searching and asking questions of everyone.
12:10It is not altogether surprising that there were perhaps some sharp words spoken to Jesus when he was found.
12:19Jesus was surprised that they had been looking for him.
12:23For to him it would have been natural for him to have been in the temple.
12:29Where else indeed could he have been?
12:35We have perhaps a glimpse here of the innocence of Jesus as a child.
12:40For he had not yet grown in wisdom.
12:43And I am quite sure that he had no wish to cause such anxiety to his parents.
12:51It was possibly the first time he had been to Jerusalem and to the temple.
12:56And he would have been fascinated by what he saw and heard.
12:59As indeed were those who listened to him.
13:04I wonder.
13:06Are we still fascinated by what we see and hear when we go to church?
13:10Is the teaching of the good news still fresh and stimulating for us?
13:17I never seem to be amazed how every time I read a section of the Bible.
13:25And it does not matter how many times I do it.
13:28Different aspects of that particular narrative strike me.
13:33This has been particularly apparent since I started writing down my thoughts on daily readings.
13:39As I compare with what I wrote of my thoughts last time.
13:46We should also proceed to the solitary circumstance in the child life of Jesus which is given in the Gospels.
13:55He had grown for twelve years in strength and spirit and the Lord loved him.
14:00The child in Nazareth redeemed in God's eyes all the world.
14:03It was the one absorbing interest in the divine outlook upon our race.
14:09And now he is taken by his pious parents to the Passover feast in Jerusalem.
14:17This is his second visit but the first knowingly to the temple.
14:25This time he comes himself.
14:27The first time as we have seen he was presented as a baby.
14:34And there are a number of points which deserve attention in this narrative.
14:39The pious pair Joseph and Mary went as we are told every year to Jerusalem to the Passover.
14:46And they had given the Holy Child committed to their charge such advantages as Nazareth offered.
14:53The home school especially not to speak of synagogue services to which he was doubtlessly regularly taken.
15:02Evidenced their interest in the welfare of the child.
15:05No sooner then had he reached the age of twelve.
15:09At which time the little ones were deemed to be able to become children of the law.
15:15Than he is taken up by them to see the Passover at Jerusalem.
15:20Their pious consistent life was an excellent preparation for the solemnities of the great feast.
15:29Jesus came face to face with the ceremonies after experiencing the most tender home care.
15:37And the history given to us today affords ample evidence of the parental consideration.
15:44It was not perfect parental care.
15:48This only allows that neither Joseph nor Mary was entirely without sin.
15:54Indeed one of the German preachers faces an admirable discourse on parental duty upon this history.
16:00Finding in it six separate hints.
16:04But let us pause for a moment over the care with which they must have explained to him all the
16:09ritual.
16:11Doubtless he saw and understood more in it than they did.
16:15But he must have greatly received their help in the circumstances.
16:21To them the Passover spoke of a great deliverance given to their fathers.
16:26To him it spoke of a great sacrifice yet to come.
16:29To him it spoke of a great generous Shrani rad Brea-Bud.
