00:49The first 44 verses of John 7.
00:52After these things, Jesus walked in Galilee, for he did not want to walk in Judea,
00:58because the Jews, or the ruling authorities, sought to kill him.
01:03Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand.
01:07His brothers therefore said to him,
01:09Depart from here and go into Judea, that your disciples also may see the works that you are doing.
01:16For no one does anything in secret, while he himself seeks to be known openly.
01:21If you do these things, show yourself to the world.
01:25For even his brothers did not believe in him.
01:28Then Jesus said to them,
01:30My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.
01:35The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I testify of it, that its works are evil.
01:42You go up to the feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, for my time has not
01:47yet fully come.
01:48When he had said these things to them, he remained in Galilee.
01:53But when his brothers had gone up, then he also went up to the feast, not openly, but as it
01:59were, in secret.
02:02Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?
02:06And there was much complaining among the people concerning him.
02:10Some said, He is good.
02:12Others said, No, on the contrary, he deceives the people.
02:15However, no one spoke openly of him, for fear of the Jews.
02:20Now, about the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught.
02:25And the Jews marveled, saying, How does this man know letters, having never studied?
02:31Jesus answered them and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his who sent me.
02:36If anyone wills to do his will, he shall know concerning the doctrine,
02:42whether it is from God, or whether I speak on my own authority.
02:47He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory.
02:50But he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
02:57Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law.
03:01Why do you seek to kill me?
03:03The people answered and said, You have a demon.
03:06Who is seeking to kill you?
03:08Jesus answered and said to them, I did one work, and you all marvel.
03:14Moses therefore gave you circumcision, not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers.

06:33Feast of Trumpets.

06:37The Feast of Trumpets.
06:40This is my shofar.
06:42I can't blow it, unfortunately.
06:45My youngest grandson is the only one in the family that can blow this,
06:49Because he's had trumpet lessons and he knows how to do these things,
06:53But I can get the occasional nasty sound out of it,
06:57But not much at all.
06:58Certainly nothing melodious.
07:01But Feast of Trumpets began on Friday evening,
07:07And they finish at two minutes to eight tonight.
07:13And it's the first of the autumn festivals,
07:17Which is very exciting.
07:20The first of the three autumn festivals.
07:24And of course, the Old Testament prescribes seven festivals,
07:28Annual sacred feasts,
07:30Which are outlined all in Leviticus 23.
07:33And these are appointed times,
07:37The Moedim, as they're called.
07:39And they're divided into four spring festivals,
07:43First of all,
07:45Which is Passover,
07:46Begins with Passover,
07:48The Feast of Unleavened Bread,
07:50The Feast of Firstfruits,
07:52And then Feast of Weeks,
07:54What we call Pentecost, right?
07:56So those are the four spring festivals.
07:59And then there are the three autumn festivals.
08:02The first one which began Friday the 11th,
08:06This past Friday,
08:07Was Feast of Trumpets,
08:09And that finishes,
08:10As we said,
08:11At, in the UK,
08:13At two minutes to eight tonight,
08:15That's dusk.
08:17And then on Sunday,
08:20Next Sunday,
08:21We have the Day of Atonement,
08:22Yom Kippur.
08:24And that begins on Sunday,
08:26And then runs through to Monday,
08:28And that's only a 25-hour festival.
08:31And then Friday the 25th of September,
08:35The week after that,
08:36We have the Feast of Tabernacles booths.
08:40Now,
08:42Something they all have in common amongst them,
08:45Is that this,
08:47The shofar,
08:48The trumpet,
08:50Has,
08:50Plays a major part,
08:52In all of these festivals.
08:55And it is blown an awful lot of times.
08:57In fact,
08:58In fact,
08:58Right now,
08:59At the Feast of Trumpets at the moment,
09:03It's been blown 99 times today.
09:0799 times short blasts.
09:11The 100th blast will be at the closing of the festival tonight,
09:16And will be the long blast.
09:18But more about that in a moment.
09:19Anyway,
09:21There's seven festivals.
09:22Three of these seven festivals,
09:25Passover,
09:26Feast of Weeks,
09:28That's Pentecost,
09:29And Tabernacles,
09:30The three of them,
09:32Are collectively known as the Shalosh Regalim.
09:36And that is,
09:38They are the legal feasts,
09:41Where it's said that the Bible states,
09:44That the men,
09:45The mature men,
09:47Must go up to Jerusalem,
09:49Three times a year,
09:51For those three festivals.
09:53These were pilgrimage festivals.
09:56And they required the men,
09:57As we said,
09:58To go up to the temple in Jerusalem.
10:00And we read about that in Exodus 23,
10:03Leviticus 23,
10:05And Deuteronomy 16.
10:07Now,
10:08We know from the scriptures,
10:10And from historical records,
10:11That it wasn't just the men,
10:13That would tend to go up very often.
10:16But the families,
10:18The families would join in,
10:19Very quite often.
10:21The wives,
10:22The children,
10:23Granny,
10:24Whoever else,
10:25They would all pile in,
10:26And they would all go up,
10:28And they could be going for days,
10:31They could walk for days,
10:32To get up to Jerusalem.
10:35And we know this also,
10:37Of course,
10:37From scripture,
10:38From Jesus' own family,
10:40In Luke 2,
10:41Where it says,
10:43Every year,
10:44Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem,
10:46For the festival of Passover.
10:49And when he was 12 years old,
10:51They went up to the festival,
10:53According to the custom.
10:55So,
10:56Godly families would enjoy going up together,
11:00To this festival.
11:01And each of these feasts,
11:04All of them,
11:04Not just those three,
11:06But all the feasts,
11:07Were a remembrance,
11:09Of a significant part,
11:11Of their national heritage.
11:14It would look,
11:15At their past,
11:17At their present,
11:18And pointed forwards,
11:21Towards a future,
11:23That was to come.
11:24A wonderful future fulfillment,
11:27That blessed hope,
11:29That they had,
11:30Through these festivals,
11:31Reminded them,
11:32The festivals reminded them,
11:34Of that blessed hope,
11:36Or that the promised Messiah,
11:38Would come,
11:39To right all their wrongs,
11:40And set up his earthly kingdom,
11:43Of peace and prosperity,
11:45In the promised land,
11:47As all the Old Testament scriptures said.
11:51And all these feasts of Israel,
11:54All speak of,
11:55And point directly,
11:57At Jesus.
11:58And that's the bit,
12:00That the Jews,
12:02Missed way back then,
12:04And they continue,
12:05Many of them,
12:06Continue to miss it,
12:08But praise the Lord,
12:09Many are having their eyes open,
12:11The veil is being taken,
12:12From their eyes,
12:13As the scriptures say,
12:15And they're beginning to see,
12:17Some of them are beginning to see.
12:19Jesus himself said,
12:21That the scriptures,
12:22All speak of him,
12:24But so many refuse,
12:25To see this,
12:27Or understand it,
12:28Because they were spiritually blind,
12:30There's this veil,
12:31That covers their eyes,
12:34In Luke 24,
12:36It says that Jesus,
12:38Beginning with Moses,
12:39And all the prophets,
12:40He explained to them,
12:42That would have been on the road to Emmaus,
12:44What was written in all the scriptures,
12:46About himself,
12:49In Luke 24,
12:51Further along,
12:51A few verses further along,
12:53It says,
12:54Jesus tells his disciples,
12:56Everything must be fulfilled,
12:57That is written about me,
13:00In the law of Moses,
13:02In the prophets,
13:03And in the Psalms,
13:04And in John 5,
13:05Jesus said,
13:07You search the scriptures,
13:08Because you think,
13:10That in them,
13:11You have eternal life,
13:13And these are they,
13:15Which testify of me,
13:18Everything was about Jesus,
13:21So in order to recognize,
13:23And understand the Lord Jesus,
13:25We even here,
13:27Need to recognize,
13:28And understand the scriptures,
13:30They all speak of him,
13:33And they all directly point to him,
13:36Now,
13:36As you've guessed,
13:38From our reading in John 7,
13:40I want to focus primarily,
13:42On the feast of tabernacles,
13:44But I will touch on,
13:45Some of the other feasts as well,
13:49But tabernacles,
13:50Succot,
13:51As it's called,
13:52Which literally just means booths,
13:54Okay,
13:55Which just means booths,
13:56He says,
13:57So Succot booths,
13:59Is one of the seven festivals,
14:02To be commemorated,
14:03But also the one,
14:04As I said,
14:05Where they are,
14:07Obliged to go up to Jerusalem for,
14:10And all the Jewish men that is,
14:12Every year,
14:13Now,
14:13There were three primary,
14:16Historical,
14:17And theological reasons,
14:19For this festival,
14:21Remembrance,
14:23Gratitude,
14:24For the present,
14:25So remembrance of the past,
14:27Gratitude,
14:28Of the present,
14:29And prophetic anticipation,
14:32And that was a theme,
14:33That ran through,
14:34All of these festivals,
14:36So they looked back,
14:37And they remembered,
14:39And they saw with gratitude,
14:41What God had done for them,
14:43They remembered it all,
14:45And they looked,
14:47At what,
14:49The present,
14:50To thank the Lord,
14:51For what he was doing,
14:53And in tabernacles,
14:54They'd be thanking,
14:54The present part,
14:55Would be their harvest,
14:57Because they would be remembering,
14:59Their autumn harvest,
15:01At that point,
15:01At tabernacles,
15:02That was one of the reasons,
15:04That was specified,
15:05And then they would look,
15:07To the future,
15:09So that historical remembrance,
15:12Remembered,
15:13The 40 years,
15:14That they went through,
15:15The wilderness,
15:17They remembered,
15:18As they wandered through,
15:19The wilderness,
15:20After the exodus,
15:21That they had to live,
15:23In temporary booths,
15:24In temporary shelters,
15:26And they remember,
15:27God's provision,
15:29And his protection,
15:31Throughout all of that time,
15:34The present,
15:35Was the agricultural,
15:36Thanksgiving,
15:38Because they were remembering,
15:40And thanking the Lord,
15:41For the harvest,
15:43That had just happened,
15:45They,
15:45Because it's at the,
15:46It's always right at the end,
15:48Of this harvest,
15:50Of the harvest,
15:51They've just had,
15:52So this ingathering,
15:54And it's like a completion,
15:55Of this harvest,
15:56And acknowledging,
15:57That all prosperity,
15:59Is a gift of God,
16:01These are all things,
16:01We need to be remembering,
16:03These are all lessons,
16:05For each and every one of us,
16:06And we can read these things,
16:08In Exodus 34,
16:10And Deuteronomy 16,
16:11And then for the future,
16:14We read in Zechariah 14,
16:16And Revelation 21,
16:18The feast points,
16:20To the messianic age,
16:21And the second coming,
16:23Of Jesus Christ,
16:25Who,
16:26As we said,
16:27Many of them,
16:27Haven't accepted,
16:29As yet,
16:31During the,
16:32Tabernacles of course,
16:34One of the major things,
16:35That they would do,
16:36That I'm going to cover,
16:37In a little bit more detail,
16:38And you'll understand,
16:39The reasons for it in a while,
16:41Were rituals,
16:43Like the water libation,
16:44That was a major,
16:46Major daily part,
16:48Of the seven,
16:49Eight days,
16:50Of tabernacles,
16:52And this water libation,
16:55But,
16:55Before we go into that,
16:57I want to,
16:59Just spend a bit of time,
17:00On something that I think,
17:01Is important for us,
17:02As well,
17:03To learn from all of this,
17:06And that is,
17:07In the walk,
17:08The pilgrimage,
17:10Up to Jerusalem,
17:17There could be,
17:19Tens of thousands,
17:20Of people,
17:21Walking up to Jerusalem,
17:24Josephus reckons,
17:25The historian of the time,
17:27Reckons that,
17:28Could be on the major,
17:30Major festivals,
17:31Something like,
17:31Two million people,
17:33Going into Jerusalem,
17:34Now when you,
17:35Take into account,
17:36That there were,
17:3730,000 people,
17:39Living in Jerusalem,
17:40At the time,
17:41Suddenly having two million,
17:43Is way,
17:44Way over the top,
17:46Now,
17:47A lot of other historians,
17:48Claim about half a million,
17:50And,
17:51Whatever it is,
17:52It was an awful lot more,
17:54Than the people,
17:55That lived in Jerusalem,
17:57And all of these,
17:59Hundreds of thousands of people,
18:01Would be walking up,
18:03To Jerusalem,
18:04Or walking down,
18:06And then walking up the hill,
18:08You see,
18:08Jerusalem is really quite high,
18:11It's around,
18:133,000 feet,
18:15Or so high,
18:16Depending on which part of it,
18:18Because once you're in Jerusalem,
18:19It's extremely steep,
18:21Areas,
18:21And the top part of it,
18:23Of course,
18:23Is where the temple was,
18:25The temple mount,
18:26And,
18:27If the people were coming,
18:28Say,
18:29From Galilee,
18:29As Jesus was,
18:31And his disciples,
18:33And his brothers,
18:34All went from Galilee,
18:36That could take,
18:37Seven to nine days,
18:40To get there,
18:41Between seven,
18:42And nine days,
18:43They didn't have,
18:45Trains,
18:45They didn't have,
18:46Planes,
18:47They didn't have,
18:47Buses,
18:48They didn't have everything,
18:49It was the old,
18:50Shanks pony,
18:51They had to get on their,
18:54Get their feet,
18:55And rely on their legs,
18:56To carry them up there,
18:58And that was,
19:00A major,
19:02Major undertaking,
19:03For an awful lot of people,
19:05Because there were very narrow,
19:08Unmade roads,
19:10Some were quite dangerous,
19:12Because there'd be thieves,
19:13Along the way,
19:14And there are all sorts,
19:16Of dangers,
19:18And difficulties,
19:20Not including,
19:22The tiredness,
19:23Of carrying,
19:24Whatever they needed,
19:26They had to carry,
19:27All of these things,
19:29Not just their clothing,
19:30But also,
19:32They had to take,
19:33Their own offerings,
19:35That would be offered,
19:36At the temple,
19:38Because everyone,
19:39Had,
19:39Every man,
19:40Had to bring an offering,
19:41The scriptures told them,
19:43So,
19:45Along the way,
19:46There'd be all of these people,
19:48Thronging together,
19:49And sticking together,
19:51And they had,
19:52Amongst other things,
19:54The Psalms of Ascent,
19:55That we're all familiar with,
19:57I'm sure,
19:58You will have heard,
19:59Of those before,
20:00And that's Psalms,
20:02120 to 134,
20:05Those 14 Psalms,
20:0715 Psalms,
20:08Sorry,
20:08They traditionally served,
20:10As a pilgrim's hymnal,
20:12We've got our hymnal,
20:14That was their hymnal,
20:16And even these Psalms,
20:18If you read them,
20:19They look back,
20:20And they remember,
20:21And they thank the Lord,
20:23For what he's done,
20:24And they thank him,
20:25For what he's doing,
20:26And how he keeps them safe,
20:28And then they also look forward,
20:30To the future promise,
20:32That blessed hope,
20:34Of salvation,
20:35So we consider,
20:36All of this,
20:37With all the hardships,
20:38Of the ascent,
20:39And all the fellowship,
20:41And the joy,
20:41In the midst,
20:42Of the hardship,
20:44It makes me think,
20:45Of our spiritual journey,
20:48As Christians,
20:51You see,
20:52God created us,
20:53For fellowship,
20:55Didn't he?
20:55He created us,
20:56For fellowship,
20:57Fellowship with himself,
20:59And with one another,
21:01And that's incredibly important,
21:04And I think,
21:05That's what probably,
21:06Prompted the Holy Spirit,
21:08To write,
21:09Hebrews 10.25,
21:11Not forsaken,
21:12The assembling,
21:13The assembling of ourselves,
21:15Together,
21:16As the manner of some is,
21:17But exhorting one another,
21:19And so much more,
21:21As you see,
21:22The day approaching,
21:24Or as other translations,
21:26Like the ESV,
21:27Not neglecting to meet together,
21:29And not giving up,
21:30Meeting together,
21:31Together,
21:33But,
21:34It is such an important thing,
21:36Fellowship,
21:37Having other Christians,
21:38Amongst you,
21:39On that difficult ascent,
21:42That difficult walk,
21:43Of our lives,
21:45In these last days,
21:47We know that Satan,
21:48Has worked so hard,
21:50At stopping us,
21:51From fellowship,
21:52We experience the likes,
21:54Of COVID,
21:55And since then,
21:57We hear that lie,
22:00Spoken of by Christians,
22:01Christians so often,
22:03Saying,
22:04Well,
22:04We don't really need,
22:06To go to church so often,
22:08Because we get,
22:09A lot of our feeding online,
22:12From the speakers online,
22:14And from this,
22:16And our fellowship online,
22:18And we hear it from our daughter,
22:20Who's quite a strong Christian,
22:21And they justify it like that,
22:25But I must say,
22:26I don't hesitate to say,
22:28That this is a lie,
22:29From the evil one himself,
22:31We need,
22:33To meet up,
22:34As Hebrews says,
22:36Not to neglect meeting together,
22:39And all the more,
22:41As the day approaches,
22:43Just think of it,
22:45All of these people,
22:46Were walking,
22:47And they were safe,
22:49As long as they were together,
22:50They were safe from attacks,
22:52They were safe,
22:53For,
22:55You could just imagine,
22:56People encouraging one another,
22:58To keep going,
23:00It's not far now,
23:02Here,
23:02Lean on me,
23:03We're almost there,
23:04Let me help you carry that burden,
23:06For a few miles,
23:07And at certain points,
23:08You'll hear them warning,
23:10Come on brethren,
23:11Tighten up now,
23:12This section of the journey,
23:13Is claimed to have,
23:14A lot of robbers here,
23:16So we've got to look after each other,
23:17And you see,
23:18That's exactly our,
23:20Life of fellowship,
23:21As Christians,
23:23It is so,
23:24Very important,
23:25And all the more important,
23:27As we see the city gates approaching,
23:30I don't know about you dear friends,
23:32You've heard me say it many times,
23:34The city is in sight,
23:36Come on heavens children,
23:38The city is in sight,
23:40It is so wonderful,
23:43As we see,
23:44All the more important,
23:45As we see the city gates approaching,
23:47Getting closer,
23:48Those last couple of miles,
23:51Are the hardest,
23:52Hardest ones,
23:54For anybody,
23:55They've walked for days,
23:56They've walked for a week,
23:58Some may have walked for weeks,
24:00In fact,
24:01To get there,
24:02If they've been further,
24:04Much further afield,
24:06And we need,
24:08The help,
24:09And encouragement,
24:10Of one another,
24:11So much more,
24:13As Hebrews 10 said there,
24:15As we see,
24:17The day approaching,
24:18Because we're getting closer,
24:20So the attacks,
24:21Will get worse,
24:23And we need,
24:24To have one another,
24:26To encourage one another on,
24:28To spur each other on,
24:30As the scriptures say,
24:31And to just help each other,
24:34Through these things,
24:35Carry each other's burdens,
24:37Where they're needed,
24:39Hold on,
24:40Keep going,
24:41We're almost there,
24:43Don't give up,
24:44We're at the last mile,
24:46That's the message,
24:47That God has for us,
24:50So that ascent,
24:51Is a real picture to me,
24:54Of our ascent,
24:56As Christians,
24:58So let's get back,
25:00To the festivals now,
25:02Which as I said,
25:04Just began two days ago,
25:05The autumn festivals,
25:06Last Friday,
25:07And that's the first one,
25:09The feast of trumpets,
25:11Yom Teruah,
25:12And Rosh Hashanah,
25:14Is also thrown in there,
25:16At that time,
25:17That's the new year,
25:19But that is the political new year,
25:22The civil new year,
25:23It's not the biblical new year,
25:25Because the biblical new year,
25:26We know is in the seventh month,
25:28You read about that,
25:29Leviticus 23,
25:30And Numbers 29,
25:32But anyway,
25:33We've,
25:34We're in at the moment,
25:36In the feast of trumpets,
25:38And the feast of trumpets,
25:40Is quite unique,
25:41In a couple of ways,
25:44It's the only feast,
25:45That's not determined,
25:47By an exact time,
25:50It is determined,
25:52By the appearance,
25:53Of the new moon,
25:54In the month of Tishri,
25:58Traditionally,
25:59Watchmen were put on the walls,
26:01Of Jerusalem,
26:02They would be up there,
26:03On the walls,
26:04And they would be looking,
26:06And they,
26:08When they saw,
26:09The new moon come,
26:10They would blow their shofars,
26:13To say,
26:14This is the beginning,
26:15Of trumpets,
26:16Now,
26:17The problem was,
26:19That if the,
26:20If anything was overcast,
26:23If the weather was overcast,
26:25If there were clouds in the way,
26:27There could be a lot of mistakes,
26:29They may not see it,
26:31They may have to wait,
26:33Until they could physically see,
26:35That moon shining through,
26:39And so,
26:40The Jews,
26:42Referred to it then,
26:43And they continue to refer to it now,
26:45As the day and hour unknown,
26:49That is the festival,
26:51Of the day and the hour unknown,
26:54It's not the formal name,
26:55But that's how they refer to it,
26:57So,
26:59The point,
26:59What,
27:00Does this point have something to do with,
27:01Look,
27:02Christ Jesus?
27:03Well,
27:03I'll leave that to your imaginations,
27:06Another interesting fact,
27:08On the Feast of Trumpets,
27:10It's the only one of the feasts,
27:12Surprisingly,
27:12Where God doesn't give any reason,
27:15For keeping it,
27:17Tabernacles,
27:17For instance,
27:18As we said,
27:19It speaks about,
27:20In the Old Testament,
27:21About the 40 years,
27:24Going through the wilderness,
27:25Where they're remembering that,
27:26And it speaks about,
27:28The harvest,
27:30That they've just had,
27:31And to remember the harvest,
27:33And to remember God's goodness,
27:34And his faithfulness,
27:36But Trumpets,
27:37Is the only one of the seven feasts,
27:39That doesn't have,
27:41Any association,
27:43From God,
27:44He simply states,
27:46That they're to keep it,
27:47He tells them,
27:48How to keep it,
27:49And they're to keep it,
27:50But he doesn't say why,
27:53So they call it a mystery,
27:56And they say,
27:57It's a mystery,
27:58Which only God knows,
27:59And which will eventually,
28:01Be revealed,
28:03It's interesting,
28:04Isn't it,
28:04These little pictures,
28:06That we see,
28:07That we can look at,
28:08Through the lens,
28:10Of Christ Jesus,
28:12And we can understand,
28:14So much more,
28:16So during that Feast of Trumpets,
28:18As I said earlier,
28:18The shofar is traditionally,
28:20Blown a hundred times,
28:22Throughout the day,
28:23Now it would have been,
28:25On the first day,
28:26And the second day,
28:28But because,
28:29The first day,
28:30Was the Sabbath,
28:32They delay,
28:33The blowing of the trumpets,
28:34Of the hundred,
28:36Blowings,
28:37Until the second day,
28:38Which would have been today,
28:39They would have been blowing,
28:41The trumpets today,
28:42And they're short blasts,
28:45As we said,
28:45And the final trumpet,
28:47The last trump,
28:49Is a single,
28:51Long sustained,
28:53Final note,
28:54It's called,
28:55The takia de golga,
28:57Takia gedola,
29:00Gedola,
29:01And you know,
29:02It is the last trump,
29:05That's it,
29:06That's the final,
29:08And that is the closing,
29:10Of the ceremony,
29:14We as Christians,
29:15Call it the last trump,
29:17As well,
29:18As mentioned in,
29:19First Corinthians 1552,
29:22And it's believed,
29:23By many,
29:24To be a signal,
29:25Of the rapture,
29:26Of the church,
29:27And the resurrection,
29:28Of the dead,
29:30Now,
29:31The feast trumpets,
29:32Is also though,
29:34Right now,
29:35They've just starting,
29:36The ten days of repentance,
29:38Leading to the next festival,
29:41Which will be,
29:42Next week,
29:43As we said,
29:44Which is going to be,
29:45Yom Kippur,
29:46The day of atonement,
29:48And so they begin,
29:50Ten days of repentance,
29:52That's a build up,
29:54At the end of this festival,
29:56To getting into,
29:58The day of atonement,
30:01They look at themselves,
30:03They spend time,
30:05Meditating on themselves,
30:07Looking,
30:08And the Jews,
30:09Will look back,
30:10And try to,
30:12Identify,
30:13What they may have done wrong,
30:14Which upset God,
30:15During the last year,
30:17And try and put it right,
30:19Things with other people,
30:20Things with themselves,
30:22And so on,
30:22Because they want to be,
30:24In what they call,
30:25The book of life,
30:26Or death,
30:27Which he opens,
30:28And to examine,
30:30On this day,
30:31And if their good deeds,
30:33Outnumber their sins,
30:34In the past year,
30:36That person's name,
30:37Will be inscribed,
30:38In the book of life,
30:40For another year,
30:42So,
30:42They go from,
30:44Yom Kippur,
30:45To Yom Kippur,
30:46Like that,
30:47And they,
30:48Work through,
30:49Their sins,
30:51Now,
30:52Isn't it wonderful,
30:53To know,
30:54That we've been forgiven,
30:55Our sins,
30:56We're under grace,
30:58We don't have to sit there,
31:01Time after time,
31:02Every year,
31:03Looking back,
31:03And worrying,
31:04Is my name,
31:05Going to be scrubbed,
31:06Out of that book of life,
31:07You know,
31:08And whatever it is,
31:10You know,
31:11We don't have to worry,
31:12Because the Lord God,
31:14Has taken us,
31:15He's our covenant God now,
31:17He's our heavenly father,
31:19And he,
31:20Has taken us,
31:22To himself,
31:22And into his family,
31:24And just as,
31:25A father,
31:26Will not throw their child out,
31:28A loving father,
31:29Will not throw their child out,
31:31He will not throw,
31:33Cast us out either,
31:35So,
31:36As we said,
31:37This leads,
31:37To Yom Kippur,
31:39Which begins,
31:40At nightfall,
31:41On Sunday,
31:41The 20th,
31:42Next Sunday,
31:43It begins,
31:44At nightfall,
31:44Next Sunday,
31:45And finishes at nightfall,
31:47On the 21st September,
31:49Just a 25 hour period there,
31:51So that's the two,
31:52Autumn festivals,
31:54Trumpets,
31:55And Yom Kippur,
31:56And now,
31:57We have,
31:58The Day of Atonement,
32:00The Day of Atonement,
32:01I think is,
32:03An incredibly important one as well,
32:06And it,
32:08Was certainly the most,
32:10Fun one,
32:11In many ways,
32:12For the Jews,
32:13It was an occasion,
32:14When the,
32:15When the Jews were commanded,
32:17They were actually commanded,
32:19In Deuteronomy 16,
32:2013 to 15,
32:22To actually be joyous,
32:24During that time,
32:26To really enjoy it,
32:28To do everything they can,
32:31To be joyous,
32:32And enjoyed,
32:33It was not,
32:33A solemn festival,
32:35And you see it,
32:37On the news,
32:37When they're,
32:38When it's being shown,
32:40Even in London,
32:41The Jews,
32:42Celebrating,
32:43Tabernacles,
32:44In London,
32:45Or anywhere else,
32:46Around the world,
32:47They're having fun,
32:48They're dancing,
32:49They're celebrating,
32:50They are joyous,
32:53And during that time,
32:54There were certain rituals,
32:55That happened,
32:58For seven days,
33:00The priests,
33:02Because this lasted seven days,
33:04And then they had their eighth day,
33:06For the closing day,
33:07And for seven days,
33:09The people had this ritual,
33:12Where the priest,
33:13Would take a golden pitcher,
33:15Would go down,
33:16To the pool of Siloam,
33:17Which is fed by the Gihon Springs,
33:20And they would go down there,
33:22The priest would go down there,
33:23And he would fill up this pitcher,
33:25From,
33:26Of water,
33:27From there,
33:28And that's quite a long way,
33:30From the temple,
33:31Right,
33:32It's quite a long way down,
33:33From the temple,
33:34And they would be down,
33:35In that pool of Siloam,
33:37Now,
33:38There were so many people,
33:40They were thronging around the priest,
33:42And trying to watch,
33:43And trying to see,
33:44And certainly,
33:45All of them couldn't get close,
33:47To see all of this,
33:49But he would fill it up,
33:52And while he's filling it up,
33:54While he's drawing this water,
33:56In this golden pitcher,
33:58From the pool of Siloam,
34:00The priest would recite,
34:01Isaiah 12,
34:033,
34:03You shall draw forth water in joy,
34:07From the wellsprings of salvation,
34:10From those wellsprings of salvation,
34:13And then with much joy,
34:15People dancing around them,
34:17And singing around the priest,
34:19He would make his way back up,
34:21To the temple,
34:23And he would go up to the altar,
34:25And he would pour the water,
34:27Over the temple,
34:28And over the horns,
34:30Of the temple,
34:34When they were getting,
34:36To the temple,
34:37With the water,
34:38There was a threefold trumpet sound,
34:41As I said,
34:41The trumpets get in everywhere,
34:43In all the feasts,
34:44And three blasts would be sounded,
34:48As the water arrived at the temple,
34:51And they would begin,
34:52Everyone,
34:53That was a sign,
34:53For everybody to begin,
34:54To sing the Hallels,
34:56These are Psalms,
34:58113 to 118,
35:01The Hallel literally means,
35:02Hallelujah,
35:03The hallelujahs,
35:05Right?
35:05113 to 118,
35:08And they would begin,
35:10To sing that,
35:10And of course,
35:12At the end of the Hallel,
35:13At Psalm 118,
35:1622,
35:17We have the messianic prophecy,
35:20The stone,
35:21Which the builders rejected,
35:23Has become the chief cornerstone,
35:25Right?
35:26So,
35:27Psalm 118,
35:31Verses 19 to 26,
35:33Really,
35:34Are so important,
35:35I'm going to read them through,
35:37Right now,
35:38And,
35:39Open to me,
35:40The gates of righteousness,
35:42I will go through them,
35:44And I will praise the Lord,
35:46This is the gate of the Lord,
35:48Through which the righteous shall enter,
35:50I will praise you,
35:51For you have answered me,
35:53You have become my salvation,
35:55The stone which the builders rejected,
35:57Has become the chief cornerstone,
36:00This was the Lord's doing,
36:02It is marvellous in our eyes,
36:04This is the day the Lord has made,
36:06We will rejoice and be glad in it,
36:09Save now,
36:10I pray,
36:11O Lord,
36:11O Lord,
36:12I pray,
36:13Send now prosperity,
36:15Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,
36:18We have blessed you from the house of the Lord,
36:21And they would do this,
36:24For seven days,
36:26And every time when they arrived,
36:29At the altar,
36:31They would circle the altar seven times,
36:33Pouring the water over the altar,
36:36On that last final day,
36:39The climax of the celebration,
36:41On the last and greatest day of the festival,
36:44As we read in John seven,
36:48Something different happened,
36:49They would take the water up,
36:51But then they would only go around once,
36:56They would still do the Hallels,
36:58They would cry out the Hallels,
37:01And Jesus chose that moment,
37:04That opportunity,
37:05To announce that he is the true rock,
37:09From whom flow the waters,
37:11The living waters,
37:13To all who believe,
37:14And we,
37:15As it said,
37:16On that last day,
37:18He cried out,
37:19On the last,
37:20In verse 37 of John seven,
37:23On that last day,
37:25That great day of the feast,
37:27Jesus stood and cried out,
37:29Saying,
37:29If anyone thirsts,
37:31Let him come to me and drink,
37:33He who believes on me,
37:35As the scriptures have said,
37:36Out of his heart will flow rivers,
37:39Of living water,
37:41He was saying,
37:42You know this ceremony,
37:43That you've been doing,
37:45For all these days,
37:46This whole week,
37:47I am the conclusion of it,
37:50I am the fulfillment,
37:51Of this ceremony,
37:53It's all about me,
37:56Can't you see it?
37:57And of course,
37:58Some did see it,
38:00Some did believe,
38:01As we read in those verses,
38:03In John seven,
38:04Some did believe,
38:05But others questioned,
38:07And came up with excuses,
38:09Oh yeah,
38:10But he's not from,
38:12David's city,
38:13He's from Galilee,
38:14Little did they know,
38:15He was from David's city,
38:17He had been born there,
38:19But people will use any excuse,
38:22If they don't want to believe,
38:24If they fight,
38:25If they struggle to believe,
38:26And these people,
38:29Jesus had done so many,
38:31So many miracles,
38:33Right in front of their eyes,
38:35In John two,
38:36Just in the gospel of John,
38:38John two,
38:39He turned water into wine,
38:41In John four,
38:42He healed the official son,
38:44In John five,
38:46He healed the paralyzed man,
38:47Who had been 38 years,
38:50Paralyzed,
38:50And he did that where,
38:52At that pool of Siloam,
38:53Of course,
38:54And,
38:55He did that on the Sabbath,
38:58And in John six,
38:59He fed the five thousand,
39:02And in John six again,
39:03He walked on the water,
39:05All of this before this moment,
39:07They had seen what he could do,
39:10They had seen,
39:11That he fulfilled,
39:14The scriptures,
39:15You see the Jews,
39:17Because they were,
39:18They got so many charlatans,
39:21Coming along saying,
39:22I'm the Messiah,
39:23No I'm the Messiah,
39:24No I'm the Messiah,
39:25And there had been lots,
39:26And lots of people,
39:27Claiming to be Messiahs,
39:28The Jews,
39:29A century before,
39:31Had sat down,
39:32And they had decided,
39:34That when,
39:35That we need to put together,
39:36Some messianic miracles,
39:38That only the Messiah,
39:39When he comes,
39:41Will do,
39:41And they use the basis,
39:43From Isaiah 35,
39:45Five to seven,
39:46And he says,
39:48Then the eyes of the blind,
39:50Shall be opened,
39:51The ears of the deaf,
39:52Shall be unstopped,
39:54The lame shall leap like deer,
39:56The tongue of the dumb sing,
39:58The waters shall burst forth,
40:00In the wilderness,
40:00And streams in the desert,
40:02There's the water again,
40:03The parched ground,
40:04Shall become a pool,
40:06And a thirsty land,
40:07Springs of water,
40:08He fulfilled,
40:11Those miracles,
40:12And we read about it,
40:14In the other gospels,
40:15Which cover the miracles,
40:17That he did,
40:18In far more detail,
40:20Because of course,
40:21Even in John 20,
40:22Doesn't it,
40:23It says,
40:24All the miracles,
40:25Jesus did,
40:26Weren't written,
40:27There'd just be,
40:28Need for too many books,
40:29All the books in the world,
40:31Couldn't contain them,
40:32He did an awful lot more,
40:34But,
40:34They could recognize him,
40:37Through the fulfillment,
40:39Of those messianic miracles,
40:41John the baptist,
40:42When he was in jail,
40:43Remember in Matthew 11,
40:44And Luke 7,
40:45He sent his disciples,
40:47When he was having,
40:48He was a bit down,
40:49Perhaps,
40:50Who knows,
40:51And he said,
40:52Are you really the one,
40:54That we've been expecting,
40:55Or should we hold on,
40:57For somebody else,
40:58And what did he say,
40:59He quoted back at them,
41:01Jesus responded,
41:02By instructing them,
41:04To report what they'd witnessed,
41:05He said,
41:06The blind receive their sight,
41:08The lame walk,
41:09The lepers are cleansed,
41:11The deaf hear,
41:12The dead are raised,
41:13And the good news,
41:14Is proclaimed,
41:15Everything that's there,
41:16In Isaiah 35,
41:18So they'd seen all of this,
41:20They'd understood all of this,
41:22But they refused,
41:24To believe,
41:27And that's why of course,
41:30In Jeremiah 17,
41:32Verse 13,
41:34Jeremiah said,
41:35O Lord,
41:36The hope of Israel,
41:37All who forsake you,
41:39Shall be ashamed,
41:41They who depart from me,
41:43Shall be written on the earth,
41:44Because they have forsaken the Lord,
41:47The fountain of living water,
41:49So what happened,
41:51In John 8,
41:52Just after this proclamation,
41:54By Jesus,
41:56The Jews bought to Jesus,
41:58A woman caught in adultery,
42:02And they said,
42:03What should happen to her,
42:05Our law says,
42:07She should be stoned to death,
42:08What do you say,
42:09They were trying to trap him,
42:10They were trying to make him,
42:12Condemn this woman,
42:14And he just bent down,
42:16And started writing,
42:17What in the earth,
42:18He started to write,
42:20In the earth,
42:22And they couldn't see,
42:23What he was writing,
42:24And they kept pushing him,
42:25And so he suddenly,
42:27Stood up after writing,
42:28And suddenly they could see,
42:30They would have been able to see,
42:31What he'd written in the earth,
42:34Those who depart from me,
42:36Shall be written in the earth,
42:39Were their names written in the earth,
42:41We don't know for sure,
42:43But it certainly seems likely,
42:45They would have known,
42:46Jeremiah 17,
42:48Very well,
42:50In Jeremiah 2,
42:51He says,
42:51My people have committed two evils,
42:53They have forsaken me,
42:55The fountain,
42:56Or the spring of living waters,
42:58And they've hewn themselves cisterns,
43:01Broken cisterns,
43:02That cannot carry any water,
43:04And here was Jesus saying,
43:06I'll give you water,
43:07I'll give you water,
43:08Just like that woman at the well,
43:10I'll give you living water,
43:12That you'll drink once,
43:13And you'll never be thirsty again,
43:17Isaiah 55,
43:19Come all you who are thirsty,
43:20Come to the waters,
43:23Psalm 36,
43:25How priceless is your unfailing love,
43:27O God,
43:27People take refuge in the shadow of your wings,
43:30They feast on the abundance of your house,
43:33You give them drink from your rivers of delights,
43:36For with you is the fountain of life,
43:39And Isaiah 65,
43:41Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says,
43:44My servants will eat,
43:45But you will go hungry,
43:47My servants will drink,
43:49But you will go thirsty,
43:52All of that,
43:54The Jews would have known those verses,
43:57They would have known what Jesus was claiming,
44:01And that's why it says,
44:03Where we read at the beginning,
44:04In John 7,
44:06Some said he's the Messiah,
44:08Some said he's a prophet,
44:10Some said,
44:11Yeah,
44:11But he's from Galilee,
44:14He's not from David's town,
44:16So you get all of those types of people,
44:20Some who will play down Jesus,
44:22Some who will accept him as he is,
44:24And some who will just make excuses,
44:26No different to now at all,
44:29But we know where it's leading to,
44:33Because Revelation 22 closes,
44:36And says,
44:37The spirit and the bride say,
44:39Come,
44:39And let the one who hears say,
44:42Come,
44:43Let the one who is thirsty come,
44:46And let the one who wishes,
44:48Take the free gift of the water of life.
44:53I hope that each and every one
44:55That is listening to this online or here,
44:58Has taken of that free gift of the water of life,
45:03And you will not thirst anymore.
