00:25Ohio State looking past Texas to get to this gigantic matchup against Kent State.
00:30Oh, yeah. I'm losing sleep over it.
00:32Wow. In-state pride always takes precedence. I see where you're coming from there.

00:43You know what? I finally saw that one video that everybody was searching.

01:27Tim, our friend Rick Boyages, who's worked at the Mid-American Conference, worked at Big Ten for a long time,
01:33was the interim basketball coach at Ohio State.
01:35He brought up a great point. Why don't we show tenths of a second in college football in the NFL?
01:40We do it for everything else.
01:42Yeah. I have no idea.
01:44And then when people started telling me that zero, there could still be time left when it says zero,
01:52and I go, well, what about that time that's on there when the one is up on the – you
01:55know what I mean?
01:56So there are all these things.
01:57You know, the NCAA kind of put out a thing that was like 20 or 30, 40 years ago,
02:03where when it says zero, it's zero.
02:05And you go by the stadium clock, which is being, you know, manipulated by a timekeeper up in the press
02:14box.
02:14And, you know, you know what the NFL does.
02:17There's a couple of those veteran former NFL referees have pointed out that they were told you always defer to
02:26the stadium clock
02:27because that's what all of us Tom, Dick, and Harrys are watching.
02:31And you don't make it confusing for the people, the millions who are watching by having some super secret laser
02:39link-up kind of thing.
02:42But the point is they – I don't know.
02:47We could go into this for an hour.
02:49I don't want to discuss it for an hour.
02:50They made their call.
02:52They stood by it.
02:53They had the idea there was a conspiracy to pull Michigan out of the fire.
02:57Well, did you see how Bryce Underwood threw that previous pass?
03:00He threw it out of bounds on the clutch play of the game.

03:04Who wouldn't like another shot at a par three, right, when you shank it into the water?

03:29But that was just watching it live as I was.
03:33Just couldn't believe what I was seeing.
03:34But I had a sinking suspicion right after the play was over that something was about to be up because
03:41you're always going to review.

03:43Where the time ran out, obviously.
03:46But, you know, the way they did it, and they didn't really explain it, you know, during the game.
03:53And then they explained it feebly later with a press release.
03:57But it turns out it may be that they were right.
04:00Tim, at the end of the day, if Western Michigan goes out and wins all the rest of their games,
04:05I think the committee will look at them and go, you know what?
04:08They had Michigan down the last second.
04:11And they'll say, good luck in the Tim Mabel, because you're not getting in.
04:17I don't know.
04:18They might somewhere.
04:19That's why I think when John Steinbrecher made a little bit of a bigger deal about it, the next day,
04:24I mean, you've got to keep it relevant.
04:26And you've got to say, you know, when that clock hit double zero, we had more points than they did.
04:29And I hope the committee's thinking about that when they're trying to figure out who that last team is or
04:33that second last team.
04:34The point was, had the clock actually hit double zero?
04:38That's what was missing.
04:40You know, we say yes based on one TV replay.
04:45And then, like I said, you watch at least this one video that is piped up, and it doesn't appear
04:51to be altered at all.
04:53The clock had not hit zero.
04:55So, you know, as the old saying goes, it is what it is.

04:59Bill Clinton said that.
05:01No, Bill Clinton said it depends what your definition of is.

05:22You know what I love about this, Tim, and tell me.
05:25The new playoff system, to me, lends itself to great matchups during the regular season like this.
05:33Because if you lose a game, so what?
05:35You can still get in.
05:36And I think that's a great thing for college football.
05:39Texas would argue differently, because they didn't get in last, last year.
05:43And Sarkeesian blamed taking on Ohio State and losing to Ohio State by a narrow margin.
05:49Well, seven points, that's a whole touchdown.
05:54Supposedly, quote, out gaining Ohio State, like, who cares about that?
05:58You know, you lost on the scoreboard when the scoreboard hit double zero.
06:02I'm trying to stay within the genre of how we're conducting this interview today.
06:06It's so good.
06:07But really, the truth is, Texas didn't get in the playoffs because it lost to a mediocre Florida team.
06:14You know what I mean?
06:15They leave that part out.
06:18Do you think that, though?
06:20I think games like this, the playoff system allows more games like this to happen, which I think is great.
06:28Yeah, I understand what you're saying.
06:30But then the flip side of that argument is, especially in the 12-team format,
06:35if and when it looks like it's going to go to 24, the more you look at it.
06:40Because now ESPN is exploring that.
06:43Because when they first said they couldn't go that far, you got the impression because they couldn't find the money
06:48for it from an advertising standpoint.
06:51But now they're exploring it.
06:53The Leafs College Football Playoff is exploring it through ESPN.
06:56And that's a whole other podcast, or, excuse me, segment.
07:01I get it mixed up on a day like today.
07:03But it finally has to come down to some type of arbitration.
07:09And you look at it, well, Texas did lose at Ohio State, you know, and Alabama didn't.
07:17You know what I mean?
07:18Because Alabama got in last year and Texas did not.
07:20So that's what Texas beef should have been with Alabama, or Notre Dame's beef should have been with Alabama getting
07:28in.
07:31Not who was the team they were upset about.
07:33I can't remember.
07:34But that's who their beef should have been with, and it wasn't.
07:38But the bottom line is, yeah, it helps your resume definitely when you win a game like this.
07:45But it doesn't help it, for sure, when you lose one.
07:50Tim, I want to go back to the game for a second.
07:52So I'm watching the game last week.
07:54Okay, they're playing Ball State.
07:55I get it, right?
07:56They're up 28-3 at halftime.
08:00Julian Sands, 19-23 after the first series.
08:03He looks really good, I think.
08:06Against Ball State, I get it.
08:07Three touchdowns.
08:08Jeremiah Smith on fire, 151 yards, two touchdowns first half, right?
08:13And so I'm looking at this offense that's rolled for over 300 yards,
08:16where they end up with, like 671 on the whole game, okay?
08:20And the halftime interview from Big Ten Network, which you would think would be real positive.
08:26This was one of those moments I'm like, man, the bar is like 1,000 feet over Ohio State's head.
08:32They're up over 300 yards total offense, and the two questions are,
08:36how come we only had 30-some yards rushing, 35 yards rushing for Ohio State in the first half?
08:41And, oh, by the way, you've got a first-time freshman in Legend Bay that made two mistakes on kickoffs.
08:48He gave up about nine yards on the opening kick, on the first kick to Ohio State.
08:52I can't remember if it was the opening one or not, because he decided to take it out
08:55and get the ball to the 16 rather than 25.
08:57The two questions were like, okay, you're up 28-3, but I got to ask you,
09:03like, why is the rushing game not look good?
09:05And how about this rookie?
09:07I'm like, man, you want to talk about a tough audience.
09:10It's a tough audience.
09:12Yeah, but you guys are held to a higher standard than maybe some guy
09:17with his daily radio show in, like, Shelby or something, you know?
09:22There's some pretty good stations in Shelby.
09:24Exactly.
09:25I mean, you know, that's not slamming Shelby, AM, FM, we rock.
09:30But the bottom line is, and I'm not, by the way.
09:34I love small towns.
09:36But the bottom line, you are held to a different stand.
09:38I was questioning the running game.
09:41It was pretty pathetic in the first half.
09:43It's like they were running into the walls.
09:46And with a veteran offensive lineback plus one new starter, full-time starter,
09:51Ian Moore, obviously played a lot at the end of the game, the loss to Miami,
09:58when Austin Cervell first got banged up.
10:02But my point is, you expected more out of the running game from the jump.
10:06And then they finally broke it open with a run around the left end, you know,
10:09with Bo Jackson.
10:10Right.
10:11Yells man.
10:12Yes.
10:12And things.
10:14And then, of course, Legend Bay redeemed himself.
10:17I always try to remind guys, even in the press box, though, you know,
10:20football games are made up of four quarters and two halves.
10:24They're not just the first half knee-jerk reaction to what you just saw.
10:28But you did expect them to dominate a little bit more on the line of scrimmage
10:34last week from the jump.
10:35And except for pass protection, they really didn't.
10:39And that was befuddling.
10:40Now, with that said, Ball State was doing some games up front.
10:45Number two, Ball State, you know,
10:46these teams are not the same as they were when you last saw them last year.
10:50Ball State, I think, had 57 or 59 new faces.
10:54Ohio State had 51.
10:55Texas has 47 new players compared to this time a year ago.
11:01That's just crazy how you can reshape teams.
11:03Ask a Rutgers what it thought of UMass.
11:06You know what I mean?
11:06They reshaped UMass a week and a half ago.
11:11But sometimes it takes you a while to get the engine going.
11:13But, boy, once in a while they got the engine going.
11:15Whew.
11:16It was rolling, baby.
11:18There was one thing that I was a little concerned about.
11:19They only ended up with one sack in that game.
11:21Is that a concern?
11:23Well, here's the other thing.
11:24That kid, Keldrick Luster, he's not a kid.
11:27He's a man.
11:28The quarterback was 5'10", 250 pounds.
11:32And it was literally when Ohio State hit him, players hit him a few times,
11:37especially, you know, in the thighs area,
11:39it looked like they were trying to do a stump removal.
11:42I mean, it was like he wouldn't go down.
11:44So, they got to the quarterback a lot, flushed him a lot, got a lot of hurries.
11:49But, as Kenyatta Jackson said, you've got to finish those off.
11:52And that's especially true Saturday night.
11:56They've got to get to Arch Manning and occasionally sack him.
12:00And he's one of the better scramblers there is in college football right now.
12:05And maybe he doesn't – you don't think of that when you think of a Manning.
12:08But, you know, he is named Arch Manning.
12:10And Arch Manning is one of the great scramblers of all time, his grandpa.
12:14So, that just dovetails into what one of the major points of emphasis is for Ohio State this week
12:23is not only get to Arch Manning, don't let him escape, but also bring him to the ground.
12:28And it's funny because I think it was Christian Allegro or it might have been James Smith
12:33talked about this week about how Matt Patricia, to drive that point home, reminded them,
12:40I think showed up some videos of Ben Roethlisberger, the way he would stand in the pocket there.
12:45You know, he was as elusive as it comes.
12:47He only moved like a yard this way and a yard that way.
12:49But he was hard to sack and get a grip on.
12:52And the taller, heavier quarterbacks don't just go down.
12:58Like James Smith, they said they don't get a lot of credit for being tough to tackle.
13:03And, you know, there's only so many ways you can hit a quarterback without getting in trouble even in college.
13:08So, that's a major chore for Ohio State on Saturday night.
13:13Tim, how good do you think Arch Manning is?
13:16And if his name wasn't Manning, would he still be considered as good?
13:20Jury's out.
13:20Now, that's a very good question.
13:24I think the publicity he got before he ever really became the guy was off the chart
13:31and kind of obscene a little bit, thinking immediately he's going to be that guy.
13:37You've got to remember, Arch Manning, I mean, Peyton and Eli were really good, especially Peyton.
13:43It just cut you up mentally.
13:45I mean, just being so prepared of knowing where the answer was on every play.
13:50And that's one of the lines I like about playing quarterback.
13:54I think it was Tom Herman I first used it.
13:57Every play, every pass play has an answer.
13:59You just got to find it because somebody's going to be open and or the answer might be run for
14:05five yards,
14:06eight yards, and keep the sticks moving, the chains moving.
14:10But I think he's shown some of that savvy, but he's also shown moments where he just kind of like
14:15wags out, you know,
14:18or wigs out, I think is the correct slang, a street term.
14:22It just wigs out, and you kind of go, well, what was that?
14:25I mean, it was really disappointing to watch him last year in Ohio Stadium.
14:30He's throwing the ball sidearm, underhanded almost.
14:33I'm just going, this is the guy that's supposed to have all these great fundamentals,
14:37and he's throwing the ball into the ground.
14:40And after about the fifth time he did that, you went, no, that's him today.
14:44You know, that's his game today, and that does not square with what we've heard about the second coming, you
14:51know.
14:51I guess he'd be the third coming since Eli and Peyton were the first and second.
14:57But after Archie, his namesake.
15:01But anyway, bottom line is, I think that's a key thing to watch on Saturday night.
15:05Everybody talks about the way he finished the season last year,
15:08but really the only team they beat of circumstance was Texas A&M.
15:14And I'm just really curious on how much he's improved because I'm telling you something.
15:17But Julian Sayan is as good as there is in the country throwing the football.
15:23And he claimed, I mean, obviously Ohio State's first rushing touchdown this year, ironically,
15:29was by Julian Sayan on a scramble keeper up the middle.
15:33What was it, three yards?
15:34But I was forecasting a couple of weeks ago that I thought his first rushing touchdown was going to be
15:42at Texas,
15:42and that was going to shut a lot of people up.
15:45So I guess it will be maybe a second one.
15:47So we'll see how that goes.
15:48It's going to be interesting to see what Julian does here because I think,
15:51while everyone's watching Manning, that Sayan can make a bigger statement across the country
15:55with a great game against Texas.
