00:00Part of the reason you're down on the Cavs is playing the Cavs tonight and hell we didn't even
00:04recognize that until about 30 minutes ago while we had ourselves a knockdown drag out about
00:08accessibility of Cavaliers basketball on the TV but Julian's saying out indefinitely Ryan Day did
00:15not seem open very much at all about him returning in 2026 and now you turn the keys over to
00:21Luke
00:21Fahey and it's a program that has high expectations every single year well I want to ask whether or
00:27not the head coach of that organization that has extremely high expectations every single year
00:31gets a little bit of a free pass now that he has to go to a younger more inexperienced guy
00:35who better to answer it than Doug LaMaurice host of Bill & Doug and Northern Aggression you'll find
00:39both both on YouTube and he's on the Wiseheart Wright we make a right call Kyle Wright hotline Doug good
00:45morning hi fellas how are you doing well Julian's saying uh not going to see him again for the rest
00:51of the year I take it uh that's my strong guess yeah I think it I think he's done so
00:56now you have
00:57Luke Fahey going there and I understand Cardell Jones did it uh Urban Meyer did it I don't think
01:02that that's I think obviously that should be the exception not the rule but I'm not a hardcore Ohio
01:08State fan so you know him I don't does Ryan Day get any bit of a pass now that his
01:15starting
01:15quarterback is out for the rest of the year it seems uh a little bit yes not a big one
01:21not a like
01:22you gotta beat Michigan still right gotta beat Michigan still okay um like the national championship
01:29or bust not that this team was that but you know they have a lot of good players they have
01:33Jeremiah
01:33Smith who's as good as we've seen I do think um it's been an interesting year 12-0 in the
01:39regular
01:39season last year but even fans that that we talk with felt like they weren't tested the players felt
01:45like they weren't that fans coming into this year I think we're we're a little more like we'd take
01:4910-2 going into the playoff but a team that's tested and maybe more ready for it than a perfect
01:55easy 12-0 so this is more complicated than that but I think Ohio State fans don't mind a little
02:03adversity drama interest like it's not on cruise control they're playing good teams there's crazy
02:10stuff happening it's not what you'd wish for but I think fans in their own way are enjoying this and
02:16they all understand the idea that you know you lose your starting quarterback it changes the equation
02:21they the Ryan Day and the coaches immediately started talking about Cardale Jones right he said
02:26we told that story to the team that's where Ohio they nobody has a better backup quarterback story
02:31than Ohio State so they use it but that doesn't mean that every situation is Cardale Jones well
02:37further along those lines Doug Lee Maurice join us on the hotline is it unfair in this era of college
02:46football
02:47to expect a team like Ohio State to have a better veteran presence or somebody is a backup quarterback when
02:56they can all be plucked for a lot of money like somebody like Louisville starting quarterback right now that was
03:02a Buckeye is it kind of outrageous to expect him to stay at Ohio State for situations like these when
03:09they can just go get paid to start elsewhere yeah it's hard to build your room it's hard to keep
03:14your
03:14room at quarterback a year ago if this had happened if Julian Singen had gotten hurt for last year's
03:20team Ohio State I don't think would have skipped much of a beat they would have gone light right to
03:24Lincoln Keenholz who was a third year guy in Columbus last year I wrote a story about him last year
03:30I think he
03:30was the ideal backup quarterback because he's a veteran he'd been around he was talented he was
03:36good enough to play but he was still in Columbus of course he's gone he's not going to be a
03:41fourth
03:41year guy here at Ohio State when he can be a power four conference starter somebody else and he's he's
03:47playing pretty well at Louisville the issue is that they should also have the other version of an ideal
03:54backup quarterback which to me is there's two kinds of ideal backup quarterbacks these days one is a
03:59veteran who you believe in who maybe or maybe isn't going to be a future starter but he's a reliable
04:04older guy and then the other one is the future starter who if who's the backup who if he has
04:10to
04:10play he's just playing early but he's always going to play that should be what Tavian St. Clair is right
04:16now he's a five-star kid he's a second year kid Keelan Russell's a starting quarterback at Alabama
04:21and same recruiting class as Tavian St. Clair that if he was that if he was had won the number
04:27two job
04:28I think it wouldn't be seamless but it'd be like okay they have a guy it's just more complicated
04:33because he hasn't been number two and that the number two is a five foot ten and a half true
04:39freshman
04:40instead of a six foot four five star second year player and that's why there's a little more angst
04:45around this Doug LaMaurice joining us here on the Wise Heart Right We Make It Right called Kyle Right
04:50Hotline so what type of challenge what type of challenge does USC present coming up here next week because
04:57you get a little bit of time to prepare for it and I do think that maybe the zest behind
05:02the season
05:02I think it could change dramatically if they go out and they beat USC or if if they look bad
05:08and he looks
05:08bad and I wonder how how much things change hinging on this one game coming up against a good Big
05:15Ten
05:15opponent I think it's a two-pack right so it's at USC and then home against Oregon the next week
05:21if they go to USC and the quarterback situation is a mess and Jaden Mayaba throws all over them and
05:28they get blown off the field there's still a two-loss team they're still in it if they can come
05:33back and
05:33regroup against an Oregon team that's been through much of the same stuff also a quarterback injury to
05:40one of the best quarterbacks in the sport they've had issues with their backup quarterbacks they have
05:44two losses if you wind up with an Ohio State versus Oregon two-loss showdown first weekend in November
05:51there's still a lot of interest in that if for some reason it gets sideways and they lose both of
05:57those
05:57then it's like okay like this probably isn't going to work out I think there'll be a bump I'll be
06:04surprised
06:04if they sort of just turtle and lose the next two and that's it I do think the comparison here
06:12is
06:13actually even though I mentioned Cardale too it's actually closer to when JT Barrett had to start in
06:182014 after Braxton Miller got hurt late in the preseason JT was a redshirt freshman they didn't
06:25have a great run game yet and in week two that year they lost to Virginia Tech and JT was
06:30nine of 29
06:31and they didn't ever run great run game Ezekiel Elliott was eight carries for 32 yards and they
06:36had a bump and then they figured it out so I think Ohio State will probably have a bump here
06:41I think
06:42they'll have a clunker from the quarterback at some point but then can they figure it out or not
06:46but those two games that it's at USC home against Oregon will tell you but it helps that USC's
06:52defense stinks do you think Doug that Jeremiah Smith Heisman campaign just took a massive hit
06:58because of this or do you see the counter argument that if he still is putting up numbers and it's
07:04a
07:04different quarterback it strengthens the argument I would make that argument
07:10you'd rather have Julian Sand throw into him and him doing what he's been doing I don't think the
07:15second argument is wrong though right so he has a chance it's like it's Jeremiah might be dragging
07:21this team towards a playoff berth right like he was already the best player on the team maybe the best
07:27player in college football and now his quarterback's out if he it looks even more like a one-man team
07:34even
07:34if his stats go down even if they take a loss right I do think there's something to that it's
07:40a
07:40compelling storyline you'd rather have him putting up 180 yards a game from a quarterback who gets
07:46him the ball right so his like betting odds for it went down right there he's not as strong of
07:52a
07:52favorite as he was he's still the overwhelming favorite so you know somebody has to come get him
07:57also is it Darian Mensah Miami you know like CJ Carr in Notre Dame took a loss that didn't help
08:02him
08:02like if not Jeremiah who um so I think it I think it hurts it a little bit but I
08:08think your point about
08:09the other storyline also could be what happens uh Doug one other question for me on this uh Kyle
08:17McCord was a pretty pretty good Ohio State quarterback but when they had a chance to upgrade they upgraded
08:23Julian saying by the percentages is a really really good quarterback but is he good enough to win a
08:29national championship do you think he's the Kyle McCord in this uh equation going into next season
08:36next year super complicated he could go to the NFL he could be injured enough that like he stays in
08:44college but if you're Ohio State can you bank on him being himself it could be that say he or
08:51by the
08:51way Tavia and St. Clair they are opening the job up this week they're giving both of them first team
08:56reps so I'm it's probably going to be Fahey but St. Clair will get a look what if the guy
09:01who comes in
09:02looks really good and he's your guy in 2027 I think there are numerous paths to Julian saying not being
09:09Ohio State's quarterback in 2027 um if I had to bet I would bet he won't be because of the
09:15complications
09:16but it's not impossible but it also is a little bit weird that he we kind of thought he was
09:22playing
09:22maybe his worst game as a Buckeye against Indiana when he got hurt which is like just unfortunate and
09:30weird and complicating but there were some questions creeping in about him in big games
09:35even if he was 100 healthy and now there's this so yeah the future of Julian saying I think at
09:41Ohio
09:41State very uncertain right now you just would like to see the guy get healthy what are the uh what
09:46are the
09:46tampering rules for players in season are there any or is it just a wild west you're allowed to
09:51wink I think you can wink as much as you want okay because there's a little bit of that uh
09:55hey hey
09:56you know like everybody knows what's up right I mean I don't know that Ohio State's getting on the
10:00phone um but like I think if there are agents and anybody with eyeballs can see there might be an
10:06opportunity at Ohio State next year okay because I was I was there's a another Big Ten program to the
10:11east and I was kind of kicking around tires and seeing uh maybe I would make a call to Julian
10:16saying I'm not talking about Rutgers either all right Doug thank you so much everybody pay attention
10:22to Bill and Doug on YouTube as well as Northern Aggression on YouTube Doug we love you thank you
10:28so much for the time you take care thanks guys great to talk to you the wonderful wait wait Doug
10:33is
10:33Doug still there what you're at Disney World right now I am you know I used to I I never
10:39want to go to
10:40Disney World now I know I love Disney World Disney World I love Disney World yeah you do I do
10:44and
10:44Doug Disney World where they clearly support the expanded playoff down there oh yeah BYU at UCF
10:50this week I might go over and check it out Doug thank you for the time buddy thanks guys see
10:55you
10:55the wonderful Doug LaMaurice he was on the wise heart right we make it right call Kyle right hotline
10:58and you'll be surprised I like the Magic Kingdom more than anywhere anywhere else Epcot everybody's
11:03like well you can drink at Epcot I can drink anywhere I can drink downtown Cleveland I can drink in
11:07my
11:07basement I can drink in my I can drink at a I'm drinking a lot of places probably not supposed
11:12to drink at I don't need to drink it I've not drank at a high school football game in a
11:15long time
11:17not since I've done TV I'm not gonna sit there and say I haven't and if you're curious which game
11:22he's talking about check out our emerging podcast scene from Tuesday night oh my god perfect brought
11:27to you by extend technologies especially should or fans are going to hear the end of that anyway
11:31they're gonna want to hear the end of this show too oh I know you're gonna do it I know
11:34you're gonna do
11:35it does Ryan Day get a pass I need to ask the Ohio State fan Anthony I'm asking you okay
11:43does Ryan
11:44Day get a pass to you now or like what do you got to see like if they go out
11:51against USC and they look
11:53listless does that make you more likely to give him a pass or what are you thinking here here's the
11:59hard
11:59part about this because Doug responded to the one part of this which makes it complicated is this
12:06isn't the Woody Hayes Ohio State where they'd hoard all the scholarship players from other teams
12:11you know this isn't even the Jim Trestle situation or the Urban Meyer situation which Doug kind of laid
12:18out it's very different in this era it's tough to hoard those quarterbacks when other schools can just
12:23pay them a lot of money and give them the opportunity to start so now you're going into
12:29battle in a season where you have enough talent to contend for the national championship look at
12:33there's no super teams right now in college football and yet Ohio State has a huge quarterback
12:39issue potentially down the stretch so again I don't come in here on Monday if they lose to USC
12:46and we got to see what the Browns do and everything like that but I'm sure if they lost USC
12:50we'd scratch
12:51out a segment or two yeah you're cool with Ryan Day still because season over you've put that yeah
12:56but you've put him on the hot seat before and ever since they won the national championship it's like
13:01okay some people you're going to complain especially when they lost three out of four games for crying out
13:06and also to his credit um and I know he's got more resources than just about everybody but it's one
13:12thing to have the resources just ask a bunch of the Texas schools including Texas this year yeah it's one
13:16thing to have the resources Ryan Day clearly has forged a program that with a GM that can handle
13:23all the volatility of college football and still have his program really at the top of the perch
13:29so I got to give Ryan Day credit for that because there's a lot of schools that have a lot
13:33of money
13:34that are failing big time oh yeah it's not you can have an extremely expensive that's what I love
13:38about college football kind of being in the open like we've heard about it when it was honestly when
13:43it was like the old days and you had to do it in hefty bags and sandwich bags and uh
13:49fast food bags
13:51and cash and things like that like you could pay a bunch of money for a roster it doesn't mean
13:54that
13:54roster is going to be good now it's all out in the open they could see basically what you're spending
13:58in so many ways and we we come up with a rough estimate for a lot of these programs it's
14:02like hey
14:03just because you're spending 40 million dollars doesn't mean you're going to get 40 million dollars
14:05worth of wins as we see with Texas Texas Tech even like I know that they're killing it in the
14:10big 12
14:10can you kill it when you get to the postseason you know that or they've killed it in the big
14:1412 I
14:14should say can you kill it in the postseason like those are the things that are that are coming around
14:18here now high state has had some issues haven't been able to run the football uh obviously blowing
14:23the lead against Texas and that looks worse by the day but as I said there's no super teams in
14:28college
14:28football look at look at last weekend Saturday night was as crazy uh just the entire day
14:34was so bananas in a college football world that I had to I had to look at that before I
14:40knew about
14:41the Julian saying injury and how severe it was I had to look at that and say well am I
14:45comparing
14:45Ohio State to their national championship teams or should I be comparing Ohio State to all the teams
14:50this year because those are the teams they're battling against they're not going up against
14:54Ezekiel Elliott and Cardell Jones they're not going up against that team they're going up against
14:58the or the Alabama teams with Nick Saban or the Dabo teams when he was winning national championships
15:03they're going up against these teams the problem is now you you really have you really have taken
15:09a lot of Julian say and say what you want but he could still make the throws to some extent
15:14we
15:15don't know if they've got a quarterback on the roster who can make those throws coming up in five
15:18minutes part of the reason you're down on the Cavs is playing the Cavs tonight Ken Karman Anthony
