00:00David Portnoy exploding onto your screen, giving you riveting sports takes.
00:06I still like it better than game day.
00:08Do you really?
00:09Yes.
00:10Yes.
00:11It's not my scene anymore, man.
00:13Maybe I grew up.
00:14I don't know.
00:15It's just not my thing.
00:16Let's get Doug LaMaurice on here.
00:18It's on the Wise Heart Right.
00:19We make a right called Kyle Right Hotline.
00:21Go watch his show with Bill Landis, the Bill and Doug show on YouTube.
00:25Hello, Doug.
00:26Hi, guys.
00:27How are you?
00:28We're doing wonderful.
00:29Do you feel the same way I do about college game day or no?
00:33Yeah.
00:34Yeah.
00:35Yeah.
00:36Yeah.
00:36I'm Herbie out, brother.
00:38I'm Herbie out.
00:38Wow.
00:40Wow.
00:41Now that's spicy.
00:43All right.
00:43He said Herbie.
00:44He didn't say McAfee.
00:45No, I didn't say McAfee.
00:47Oh, both.
00:48Both.
00:48Both.
00:49No.
00:49Yeah.
00:49I'm not pro-McAfee, anti-Herbie.
00:51I'm just the whole scene.
00:52When their powers combine.
00:53I don't know why.
00:55Yeah.
00:55Yeah.
00:56Who are you more outed on now, Doug?
00:58Who are you more tired of?
01:00Give us a power ranking of people you're tired of.
01:02Here we go.
01:02Go.
01:03The dog.
01:04The dog is one.
01:06So, and all humans below that.
01:09So, yeah.
01:10But you guys, I love.
01:11See, like, if you guys had a pregame show for college football, I'd watch that.
01:15Is it just because he opened up the store about the dog?
01:21It's just, like, everybody has a dog.
01:23Everybody loves their dog.
01:24Most people don't take it to work.
01:26That's all.
01:27Right?
01:27But let's not blame the dog, though.
01:28Let's not blame the dog, though, Doug.
01:30The dog is beautiful.
01:31No, I am blaming the dog.
01:32Why?
01:33The dog insists on coming to the set.
01:35No, it doesn't.
01:36Herbie's, like, letting go to work.
01:37The dog is, like, I'm getting in the car.
01:38I'm coming.
01:39No, I know.
01:39It's fine.
01:40Teach.
01:41It's fine.
01:42I just don't.
01:42It's fine.
01:43Doug, does he take him to funerals?
01:46Does he what?
01:47Did he take the dog to, like, Lee Corso's funeral?
01:50Lee Corso's still with us, you psychos.
01:53Stop this.
01:53You're going to get.
01:54It's all good.
01:55We're moving on.
01:55I love dogs.
01:56We're moving on.
01:56Everyone loves dogs.
01:57God, you're an idiot.
01:58We're moving on.
01:59All right, Doug, you're not the idiot.
02:00Tone is the idiot.
02:01I'm sorry, buddy.
02:02All right, Doug LaMaurice.
02:03He's the host of the Bill and Doug show and Northern Aggression.
02:06He's got two shows, by the way, on YouTube here.
02:08All right, so we've got a game coming up Saturday evening.
02:11Ohio State, Texas.
02:13It's got a lot of different tentacles to it.
02:17I think Ohio State fan, who's also a Browns fan, is going to watch this game,
02:20and they may come away with who they want the Browns to take in the draft.
02:25Yeah.
02:26I mean, it's going to be hard because Jeremiah Smith's going to be floating around
02:31at the top of the draft where the Browns are going to have a pick,
02:35and you need a quarterback, but this guy's rare, right?
02:38So I've been – you know, Ohio State fans know it.
02:42They don't need to be reminded of it, but this guy's special.
02:45This is one of those, even though Ohio State's loaded with talent,
02:48you don't know when you'll see a guy exactly like this again.
02:52He's locked in.
02:53He cares.
02:55He's, like, works his butt off.
02:58He's uber talented.
02:59And I come to sort of compare him to, like, Greg Oden's one season at Ohio State
03:04when I was just like, you got to appreciate this because this is different, you know?
03:09And so, yeah, Jeremiah Smith in Cleveland would be unbelievable if he had someone
03:15to throw him the ball.
03:17Well, he's got someone right now to throw him the football in college.
03:20He was a Heisman finalist last year in Julian Sayan,
03:23and it's very interesting to see how people talk about him.
03:26He was near perfect in the opener.
03:28I mean, 21 of 25.
03:29I know it was against Ball State, but he certainly looked good.
03:33How good do you think Julian Sayan is and has a chance to be this season?
03:38Yeah, I think it's always – you have to have, like, a – it's a two-path conversation
03:43with Julian Sayan, especially if you're thinking about it from a Browns angle.
03:47There's Julian Sayan, the draft prospect, and there's Julian Sayan,
03:50the winning, successful college quarterback.
03:52Like, I'm not 100% sure about Julian Sayan, the draft prospect,
03:57just kind of mostly based on his size.
03:59But can he play at a level this year that he can lead Ohio State
04:03to a national championship?
04:03Yeah, I thought he was great on Saturday.
04:06I thought he probably made, like, one iffy decision and throw in the whole game.
04:11I thought he hit layered throws.
04:13He had his first touchdown run, a scramble on fourth down.
04:18That was huge.
04:18He didn't have a rushing touchdown all of last year.
04:21I thought he was decisive.
04:22They changed the tempo stuff with Arthur Smith as the play caller.
04:26He was really good at that.
04:27They've talked all offseason about his relationship with Arthur Smith.
04:30I thought he was in sync.
04:32You know, they had a weird first drive where they went three and out
04:35and he missed two throws, like, on miscommunications.
04:37And then after that, he and Jeremiah Smith are on the same page.
04:40He and Devin McEwen are on the same page.
04:42I thought he was really good on Saturday.
04:45And it just sets up, like, what should be an excellent quarterback battle
04:49with two veteran guys in Arch Manning and Julian Sayan.
04:52When last year they were both new and you could see it in that game.
04:55And this year, you know, they know what's up.
04:57Do you – and maybe I'm misinterpreting this.
05:00Like, you said, if Jeremiah Smith had someone throw into him,
05:03you mean in a Browns perspective or do you mean at Ohio State?
05:06In the Browns, yes.
05:06No, no.
05:07I mean, like, it would be great for him, for Jeremiah Smith, for the Browns,
05:10for Jeremiah Smith to wind up in Cleveland if they had a quarterback.
05:13Right.
05:13Julian Sayan, no.
05:14I think Julian Sayan, I don't think there's a clear-cut best quarterback
05:18in college football.
05:19I think there's, like, a top group, right, with Dante Moore at Oregon
05:22and Arch Manning and Trinidad Chambliss at Ole Miss
05:25and Darian Mensah at Miami.
05:27And Julian Sayan is definitely in that group.
05:29And I think he has the ability to be the best quarterback
05:32in college football this year.
05:33I don't think that will make him the best prospect in the draft necessarily,
05:35but he can play at the highest level.
05:37Good processor.
05:38The arm is there.
05:40If he uses his legs a little bit, I think he's more confident.
05:43So, yeah, no, Jeremiah and Julian have a really good connection.
05:47What is the biggest challenge that this Ohio State defense will have Saturday
05:51night, other than just Arch Manning, Arch Manning, Arch Manning?
05:55Yeah, I mean, I do think, you know, they have multiple receivers,
06:00but I liked how the Ohio State secondary played.
06:03I thought Devin Sanchez and Jay Timmons, the freshman,
06:05had really sticky coverage.
06:08So I think, you know, they have dudes,
06:11but if anybody can hang with those receivers,
06:14I think that Ohio State has a chance.
06:17I think, you know, Ohio State,
06:19Kenyatta Jackson, defensive end, had a lot of pressures on Saturday.
06:23They didn't get home a lot.
06:25Sacks aren't the end-all be-all,
06:27but Arch definitely can move.
06:29I think they'll run him more than they did in the first half last year.
06:33They figured it out the second half last year.
06:34They have to, I think Texas has to let Arch's running ability factor into this game.
06:38But I think, like, up front for Ohio State,
06:41like, Texas has some big old tackles, right?
06:44Like, I just, I don't know about their ability to get enough pressure on Arch Manning
06:50to sort of throw him off his game, right?
06:52Caden McDonald, his defensive tackle, was awesome last year.
06:55They miss him.
06:56Caden Curry had 11-and-a-half sacks last year.
06:58I think they'll miss him.
07:01So, I think, you know, you've got to get Arch uncomfortable with,
07:04which Matt Patricia did really well last year,
07:06and that, I think, will be harder to do on Saturday.
07:09All right, Doug, Bo Jackson had eight carries for 18 yards,
07:13and then he had one carry for 65.
07:16What did you think overall in that first half of the running game?
07:20Did you see any issues with the offensive line?
07:24Yeah, so, like, it seems like, you know,
07:26the big conversation down here is Philip Daniels at right tackle.
07:29What are they going to do?
07:30We saw them switch up the offensive line for the third and fourth series,
07:35and they kicked Austin Cervelde from right guard to right tackle.
07:37They put Philip Daniels on the bench.
07:39They put Gabe Bansickle at right guard.
07:41Could that be a solution?
07:43It's probably more in, you know,
07:45the run game was just like a little, like, off kilter.
07:48It felt like their angles weren't right.
07:51Like, I don't know that the backs were running great
07:54and hitting the holes the way you wanted them to.
07:57It obviously got better in the second half with the two big runs.
08:00They do have to get that sorted out,
08:02but I do think, like, some of the offensive line stuff,
08:05are they going to be able to protect, right?
08:07Texas, Colin Simmons, Texas has a couple guys
08:10who will try to get after you with the pass rush,
08:12and if they have a weak spot on the right side of the offensive line,
08:15that's going to be something they're going to have to deal with.
08:17We have Ryan Day at noon.
08:20We're probably the first thing to ask about is, like,
08:22what do they think their plans might be?
08:25Would they be shuffling the right side of the offensive line
08:27in a top-five matchup in Week 2,
08:29which is not ideal when you have so many veterans back?
08:32But it was a weird game.
08:34I think the backs have to hit it harder, too.
08:37Like, I think Bo and everybody involved,
08:39like, they just have to get north-south a little bit.
08:41You saw it on the big runs,
08:42but they have to do it more consistently.
08:44Doug LaMaurice joining us right now on the hotline.
08:47When it comes to these types of Hallmark games,
08:51obviously in years past, you know,
08:53you didn't have the playoff back in the day
08:55when they played Texas the first time,
08:57at least this expanded playoff.
08:58You know, it was the BCS era.
09:01So do you think the coaches coach these games any differently,
09:05knowing that a loss does not doom their season?
09:09No, because I think Bo-Sees, like, it still can, right?
09:14So it's not quite, you know, a 2014 playoff,
09:18you'll have much more wiggle room.
09:19You know, Texas is still complaining
09:21that losing to Ohio State last year
09:23kept them out of the playoff, right?
09:24Ohio State has enough tough games on the schedule this year
09:28that, you know, if you're one and one,
09:30it's certainly not the end of you,
09:33but you're losing some wiggle room.
09:35So, you know, I think there's less pressure, right?
09:42I mean, compared to 05, Ohio State, Texas,
09:46Ohio State has one of the five best teams in the country.
09:48They lose to Vince Young, and it's like, well, that's it.
09:50I guess Ohio State's not going to play
09:52for the national title, right?
09:53That's what we were in back then.
09:54It's not that.
09:55But I don't think they'll coach it any different, right?
09:57I do think, I think they've got to,
10:00they've got to treat it like a must win,
10:02even if the result would tell you
10:04it's not the way it used to be.
10:06But I think they have to go after it the same way.
10:08And this is huge for Texas.
10:09It's a much bigger game for Texas
10:10than it is for Ohio State,
10:12just because Ohio State has won these type of games
10:14and Steve Sarkeesian hasn't really.
10:17But it's big for both of them.
10:18What did you think of the Michigan game?
10:20Doug Lamourish joining us on the show.
10:21What did you think of the Michigan game the other night?
10:24Yeah, I mean, I just think it's such a bad look
10:26for the Big Ten when they've been so good on the field,
10:29three straight national championships,
10:30and like that's the storyline of week one.
10:33It's either, at the very least, confusion.
10:36Is it incompetence?
10:37Is it something nefarious, right?
10:39Like that's not the conversation
10:40that conference wants to be having.
10:42Once it happened,
10:43I thought they should have reacted more forcefully.
10:46I think it took them too long to get something out.
10:48And I think they should have been out
10:49with something already this week on like,
10:51here's the definitive, definitive,
10:53like tenths of a second,
10:55hundredths of a second view of this.
10:57And also here's our solution
10:59so this never happens again, right?
11:01Like it was jacked up.
11:04It's bad for the fans.
11:05It's bad for Western Michigan.
11:06Like, what are you going to do?
11:08Solve the problem.
11:09Like this isn't, this is unacceptable.
11:10So what's, how do you solve the problem?
11:12So they're lucky that the Western Michigan
11:14is not going nuts about it,
11:16that the Mac's not going nuts about it.
11:18But I think they've, they've, you know,
11:21once the crisis happens,
11:22I think they needed to handle this more forcefully
11:23because you can't have fans not trusting your sport.
11:27And that's where a lot of people are right now
11:30with what happened.
11:31Doug, are they not going nuts about it
11:33because of this tremendous partnership
11:36that clearly funds their athletic department year round
11:39and all their sports,
11:40or are they not going nuts about it
11:42because they think the,
11:44well, actually coming from Michigan fans was accurate,
11:46that Michigan really did deserve
11:48one more second on the clock.
11:50So, right.
11:51I mean, I think the payout was 1.5 million
11:53that Western Michigan got for that game.
11:55Right.
11:55So we, we know, right.
11:57I mean, how many Mac there were,
11:58at least four Mac big 10 games in week one.
12:01We, as you said, we know the relationship,
12:02it's millions of dollars.
12:04Um, I mean, the commission,
12:07that commissioner is a real dude, right?
12:09I think if he, I'd like to think
12:12that if he really thought it was an absolute screw job,
12:15that he'd be going nuts.
12:17Right.
12:17If it's like we saw the replay
12:19and there's absolutely no explanation,
12:21but you don't know.
12:22But again, like even this conversation
12:24is not good for anybody.
12:25Right.
12:26So like, are they just keeping their mouth shut
12:28because they don't want to lose the money?
12:29Like it's a, it's a reasonable question.
12:31I, if it was, if it was no doubt about it,
12:35if the game was over,
12:37you can't show any replay that has a 0.01 on it.
12:41I'd like to think that the Mac would be going more nuts,
12:44but how do we know for sure money changes everything.
12:47So again, this is like,
12:49I just wish the Mac has been good,
12:51like Western Michigan.
12:52And I think the Mac has handled its business through this.
12:54Like they've been professional.
12:56Maybe some people wish they, you know,
12:58raised heck a little bit more,
12:59but they've been professional about it.
13:00I just wish we've heard.
13:02I wish we'd have heard more from the big 10 by now.
13:05Doug,
13:06Lee Maurice joining us on the show.
13:07I don't know.
13:08Liman's like making it.
13:10If they were upset,
13:11I think they should raise hell.
13:13I think you got to be defensive of your,
13:15of the team.
13:16That's actually in your conference,
13:18especially with conferences strike,
13:20like not the big 10,
13:21obviously really the big 10 are the sec.
13:23And then everybody else's,
13:24especially with conferences,
13:25struggling to hold onto members and not letting members go.
13:28Like you already have Northern Illinois out of there.
13:31I do think that something probably will happen in 2031.
13:33Regrettably.
13:34Like,
13:34no,
13:34I think that if,
13:35if they really thought that there was a problem,
13:37they should raise hell over it.
13:38But you know,
13:39you'd still,
13:40you put one second back on the clock.
13:42You had a chance to stop the Hail Mary.
13:43You didn't stop the Hail Mary.
13:45I thought Michigan looked ridiculous and celebrating and rushing the field
13:48and everything.
13:49And Bryce Underwood run around like he had just won the Heisman trophy,
13:51but you know,
13:53it's still,
13:54you could have,
13:55I hate to say it like,
13:56Hey,
13:56knock it down.
13:57You had a second chance.
13:58You could have knocked it down a second time.
14:00And it's the thing that's going to make it interesting now is I guess,
14:04I guess it'll fade away.
14:06But if Michigan somehow turns out to be good,
14:09then this is going to hang around all year because if there's some,
14:12if they somehow beat Oklahoma and they're in the playoff mix and now
14:17reporters are asking the committee every week,
14:20Hey,
14:20that Michigan win.
14:22Do you really count it as a win?
14:24Do you count it as half a loss?
14:25What do you,
14:25but if it,
14:26if they're six and six,
14:28right,
14:28if they just have a bad year,
14:30a mid year and,
14:31and nobody's talking about them,
14:33then maybe,
14:34then maybe it just fades away.
14:36There's interesting,
14:36crazy stuff that happens in college football every week,
14:38but I can't,
14:39it's almost like if you're the big 10,
14:40you almost want to root for them to be bad and let's like USC or Penn
14:44state or somebody else fill that gap because that conversation,
14:48how do you,
14:49do you really count it as a win?
14:51Oh my God,
14:52that would be,
14:53that's going to be crazy in November.
14:54If that's the case.
14:54Well,
14:55Bryce under would be the starting quarterback for Michigan when they play
14:57Ohio state at the end of the year.
14:59Yeah.
15:00I like maybe not,
15:03but I mean,
15:04he's not Kyle Whittingham's guy.
15:06Right.
15:07I thought,
15:07you know,
15:08to come out in the first Monday morning news conference in week two and,
15:12and,
15:12and be like,
15:13nothing's guaranteed was really interesting.
15:17And so,
15:18but it's also on Michigan,
15:19right?
15:20Because like this idea,
15:21it seemed like in the off season,
15:22everybody was kind of like,
15:24you know,
15:24he didn't get very much coaching last year.
15:26Now the new staff is in,
15:28we're going to coach him up.
15:29And it's like,
15:29look the same to everybody else.
15:31I didn't look coached up,
15:32right?
15:33Where's the improvement.
15:34And so I thought Jason Beck was supposed to be a really good offensive
15:37coordinator.
15:38I thought Kyle Whittingham was supposed to be a stabilizing force and you
15:41can't do something with the number one recruit in the country that you
15:44paid all this money for.
15:46You can't,
15:46you can't get his footwork better.
15:49You can't get his decision-making better.
15:51Like,
15:51what are we doing?
15:52So,
15:53you know,
15:54it's,
15:54you know,
15:55I was surprised he was sort of open that door this early,
