Aldershot Town manager Scott Davies speaks after his side's 1-0 win against FC Halifax Town.
Transcript
00:01Scott, a 1-0 win against Halifax continues a really positive start to the season.
00:05I'm getting pretty happy after that?
00:06Yeah, you're always happy after three points and a clean sheet.
00:10I thought when we missed the penalty, maybe it wasn't going to be our day,
00:13but the boys stuck to the task.
00:15I think they played the way in which we know how to play front foot aggressive,
00:19try and play quickly, try and get balls in the box, 1v1s.
00:23And ultimately, in the end, the three lads that have come on
00:25have combined to get us a really well-worked goal.
00:29We had to ride our luck at times and thought the keeper that came in
00:32made two outstanding saves after we missed the penalty, like I say.
00:36So we've gone through a little bit of adversity yet again,
00:38but this time we've come out of the three points, so it's really pleasing.
00:41Yeah, three stabs all combining. Marcus, obviously his first league goal,
00:43he got a cut goal in the International League Cup,
00:45but obviously Brodie with the assist and Alfonso involved as well.
00:47Sort of pleasing all three of them there.
00:48Yeah, great goal. Really well worked.
00:50You've obviously got a set, runners off the ball, great cross and a good finish.
00:53So I was really pleased with Marcus Wiley.
00:55He's worked so hard, trained really well.
00:58And then Brodie as well with the cross.
00:59Alfonso on his debut with a really cute little set for the winger.
01:04So yeah, no, you've got to be pleased.
01:05We talk about starters, impactors and finishers.
01:08And the three lads that have come on today have impacted the game
01:11and finished it off for us.
01:12So it's always going to be a group effort.
01:14Always going to be a squad game with us.
01:16It's never going to be about one individual or two people.
01:19So yeah, it's always going to be a collective and I think you can see that today.
01:22Jonathan obviously straight in for a debuting goal and very solid when he was called into action today.
01:25Yeah, he trained with us yesterday.
01:27We knew that Hazy was going to be struggling.
01:29Hazy couldn't get through training on Thursday.
01:31And Jonathan came in today and I thought he didn't put a foot wrong.
01:34I thought his performance was flawless.
01:36So two really, really big saves.
01:38Kicked it really well.
01:40And I'm delighted for him because coming out as a lone goalie at times and playing at a level
01:44you've not played at before can be quite daunting.
01:46But I thought he adapted to it really, really, really well.
01:49Obviously got the penalty.
01:50It looked like Marcus and Tristan both wanted it there.
01:52And then obviously you ended up with Tristan obviously taking it.
01:54Yeah, that's my responsibility.
01:55I probably should have allocated a person to take it.
01:58We practiced penalties in training the other day.
02:01I believe that Marcus was going to be back on them after missing against Harlepool.
02:04And it looks a little bit scruffy.
02:06So that's something that I need to kind of rectify and take account for.
02:10So, yes, one of those things.
02:12We'll never blame anyone for missing a penalty,
02:13but I think the pressure is probably building and rising a little bit more now with the next person that
02:17takes it.
02:18You can kind of feel the nervousness in the stands and a little bit of abuse after
02:23where people are saying to me,
02:24Scotty, you need to get them to take penalties and practice.
02:26And we've done it.
02:27But you can't replicate taking one here at the EBB like you can do at Gordon School
02:32when there's no one watching.
02:33So, yeah, just disappointing.
02:35But ultimately we've got three points and that's what matters most.
02:38So you obviously practice them and you're still getting really good results, you know, despite of it.
02:42And obviously when they do start going in, that'll add to it as well, won't it?
02:44Yeah, exactly that.
02:45Yeah, we've gone through adversity yet again.
02:47It shows character.
02:48It shows belief.
02:48It shows a willingness to carry on going.
02:51So we've won in a fashion today that I think is to be applauded, to be honest.
02:54We could have gone into our shells and felt sorry for ourselves, but I don't think we did.
02:59And what's the message of half-time?
03:00Because especially the first half out of the second half sort of came out really well.
03:03Yeah, I thought we were staying there final third for longer.
03:06We were a bit scruffy, a bit rushed on crosses.
03:08We weren't sort of playing quick enough in around the edge of their box and we were a bit loose.
03:12And it was allowing them to sort of counter attack or play big passes up the pitch.
03:15And that looked like they were the only threat at times.
03:19So, yeah, just wanted to be a little bit better in possession of the football.
03:22And I thought we were much better in the second half for probably half an hour.
03:26We got the goal and then we kind of sit in a little bit.
03:29But no, overall got to be really pleased.
03:30It's another clean sheet.
03:32It's five goals conceded now, I think in six games, which is very, very good.
03:36So I'm really happy with that.
03:38And the patience and character to keep plugging away.
03:40Because you were sort of on top, but you just had to keep going to get it.
03:42WNG, win next game. That's all I ever say.
03:45You can't look any further ahead.
03:46We'll be focusing on West Ham on Tuesday night.
03:48Then we'll look at Solihull later on in the week.
03:51And we've just got to keep totalling points up onto the board.
03:55Try and get to 50 as quick as we can and see where that takes us.
03:57But the main target now is just to win our next game.
04:00West Ham, obviously you've got quite a few injuries at the moment.
04:02So I'm guessing you're going to have to manage that game quite carefully.
04:06Yeah, it's not ideal.
04:07I really like the competition, but I don't like the rules around it.
04:10We could go and play eight or nine people that need a start,
04:13but we can't do it because of the sort of like the rulings.
04:16So it is what it is.
04:17We'll have to figure that out probably tomorrow morning
04:20so we can work on it on Monday.
04:22But yeah, I'm just ecstatic at the moment with today's result.
04:24We'll worry about that come Monday morning.
04:26So it's another great result.
04:27You know, 11 points from six games as a start, you know,
04:29and seven point week as well, as well, you know, as things go,
04:32you must be really sort of happy with it.
04:33Yeah, of course. I think we've had our doubters.
04:36We still have our doubters.
04:37We've still got to prove a lot of people wrong.
04:39We're nowhere near the finished article.
04:42We're going to have bad spells.
04:43We're in a good spell at the moment, but football can soon change.
04:46And we just need to make sure that we stick to what we're good at.
04:49Don't get above our station.
04:51Make sure we're humble.
04:52Make sure we leave the egos at the door and carry on working really hard.
04:55So I think we get our rewards from doing that.
04:58We're a really tight knit group in there, as you can probably see.
05:01And everyone's doing what they're asking at the moment.
05:03You say you're demanding on the players and delivering on your demands at the moment.
05:07Yeah, listen, I know I'm a bit of a nightmare to play for in terms of what I demand for
05:11them physically.
05:12I think, like I said in one of the interviews with BBC Surrey, I feel like I'm a nice person,
05:18nice manager.
05:18But when it comes to match day, I want us to be relentless.
05:21And that's what they're giving us at the moment is a lot of tired bodies, a lot of tired minds.
05:26But listen, that's how I want them to play.
05:27I want them to be front footed.
05:28I want them to be aggressive.
05:29And they're doing exactly that.
05:31And obviously West Ham.
05:32And then you want to continue the league run on Solihull when that comes around.
05:34Yeah, I'll worry about that when that comes.
05:36We've got West Ham first and then we'll look at Solihull on Thursday.
05:38But all tough games.
05:40I won't be looking at the league position.
05:42We've always got to be at our best to get anything from a football match.
05:45We know that we're one of the underdogs and we'll have that mentality throughout the season.
05:50So I think that suits us.
05:52If anyone thinks that we're not and they get above their station, we'll soon get a sort of punch in
05:56the ribs.
05:56We'll be back down to earth pretty soon.
