Aldershot Town manager Scott Davies speaks after his side's 5-3 National League Cup win against Norwich City under-21s.
Transcript
00:01Scott, 5-3 win against Norwich, Under-21's National League Cup, 5-1 up and then entertaining night, got a
00:07bit transitional, sort of thoughts on it all?
00:09Yeah, obviously disappointing to concede three, delighted to score five, so I'm probably somewhere in between at the moment.
00:15I think it was important that we stop the rot of losing the last three games in truth.
00:20So yeah, that was really, really keen to make sure that we got a win tonight and be professional.
00:25Obviously Marcus getting a hat-trick is great, some of the goals in which he scored we're really pleased with.
00:30But yeah, letting in three goals is something we hadn't planned for and against maybe a better side, more clinical,
00:36we might end up conceding a couple more.
00:39So we could have scored a couple more as well, so there's positives and negatives within a night that's important
00:44that we won.
00:46These competitions obviously quite often can be about looking at different things, but you mentioned tonight, sort of pleasing to
00:52get the result, just sort of get that habit back again.
00:54Yeah, we probably went as strong as what we've been so far in this competition.
00:57I think it was important that we got a win. I was desperate to win, even though people say it's
01:02the National League Cup.
01:03I think it's worth £8,000 to the football club, which is always important as well.
01:07So it becomes a really good night's work.
01:10Oli Harfield getting his first 90 minutes for two years, Jacob Christmas playing at 17 years old for the academy.
01:15I loved watching them both this evening. I thought Oli was excellent.
01:19And then Jacob comes on, little live wire, showed some really good touches and some good quality into the box,
01:25flying into tackles as well.
01:26So, yeah, there's a lot of positives, a lot of things to like, but always a lot to improve on.
01:31Yeah, I mean, Oli, captain and lasting the full 90 minutes, he's sort of been working his way back and
01:35that's another sort of big milestone for him, isn't it?
01:37I said to Oli about getting 90 minutes under the belt and he was saying I could do Saturday, Tuesday,
01:42like I'm ready to do it.
01:43And I think just ticking tonight off was so important and he looked very assured out there.
01:48He looked very accomplished in what he was doing.
01:50You can see that Oli's a top, top footballer. He knows the game, he's experienced and he should be really
01:55proud of himself.
01:56I know that getting back is one thing and playing 30 minutes against Samworth or whatever it was is a
02:02small tick.
02:03But tonight's the big win for me where he's got 90 minutes.
02:06He'll feel good tonight and so he should, right?
02:08So, no, really, really pleased for him.
02:11And like I say, overall, there's a lot of things to like, but a lot to work on, as always.
02:15And Marcus Zananga-Hattrick obviously gets the match ball tonight.
02:18Yeah, he'll need that. That'll be good.
02:20I've seen him walking out with the ball just a minute ago over your shoulder.
02:22So it obviously shows that he's taking it seriously.
02:25He's not left the ball behind and things like that.
02:27So any striker that gets a hat trick will always be pleased.
02:31Tristan obviously getting a goal as well, which was important.
02:34And then Marcus Wiley.
02:35So three out of the strikers that played tonight all got a goal.
02:39So, yeah, it won't do their confidence any harm whatsoever.
02:42A good shift put in by the boys against a really good technical side, full of energy, youthful exuberance, which
02:47we always talk about.
02:48And you have to match it.
02:49And it's hard.
02:50Our lads have played, what, 15, 16 games already this season.
02:53And I think they've played eight.
02:54So fatigue probably did set in towards the last 15 minutes.
02:58But we saw the game out pretty well.
03:00And young, Jacob Christmas off the bench and straight away an assist for Marcus and just generally sort of looked
03:05very impressive for a young man.
03:06Yeah, do you know what?
03:07He was just buzzing around everywhere and you could see that he was breathing out of his backside a little
03:11bit at times.
03:12But it's the tempo of the football in which these games are played at.
03:16It's not slow paced.
03:17It's high paced.
03:18It's fast tempo.
03:19And it does take a little bit of getting used to.
03:21So, no, he should be really happy with his night's work.
03:24Yeah, again, 17 years old, coming on, playing with no fear, showing some quality, getting stuck into tackles.
03:29And listen, I've stood on the sideline like a Cheshire cat watching him.
03:32So really pleased, really, really proud.
03:35And yeah, like you say, he can be really happy with his performance.
03:38Attention to return to the FA Cup on Saturday.
03:41Tadley will obviously come here with nothing to lose, won't they?
03:43And you'll obviously be focused on your standards and delivering what you expect.
03:46It's so important that we approach it in the right way.
03:48And I think we will.
03:49We've got a group in there that will be brought down to earth very, very quickly in terms of making
03:55sure that we're professional, we're humble.
03:57We have a good mentality.
03:58We show our quality at the right times.
04:00We won't let them turn up here on Saturday and be easy-ozy.
04:04And if anyone does that, they'll soon come off the pitch pretty quickly.
04:06So, yeah, no, we know it's going to be tough.
04:08They've beaten Dartford in the last round, who I've played against for the last probably eight or nine years.
04:13Really good side, massive football club.
04:14So, it shows what Tadley are capable of.
04:17They'll get the utmost respect from me.
04:19And we need to now do our analysis and what they can bring.
04:23And we'll do everything that's what we've done this season so far, whether it's Carlisle, United or Tadley.
04:27We'll watch their games back, which we've got a couple of different bits of footage that I'll spend tomorrow doing,
04:33probably along with Jonah, and give all the lads the information which they need.
04:37Here we go.
