00:00This is one thing I can stand steadfast with Todd based on what he said about that issue.
00:07My question is, does it bother you how the fans reflect on your decision to start now?
00:15Absolutely not.
00:16Would I prefer the latter, like, that we'd all be on the same page?
00:20Yeah, but that has nothing to do with my decision.
00:22Can't ever have anything to do with what my decision is.
00:24My decision's got to be what's the best for the Browns week one all the way through the season.
00:29And as long as I'm the head coach here.
00:32As agitated as I am with the conversation, as agitated that I am that John Fanta said the quiet part
00:39out loud,
00:41it is eroded already.
00:43Like, I heard Nick say, trust in Todd, trust in Todd, trust in Todd.
00:46Yeah, that was thrown out the window the second that they named Deshaun Watson the quarterback of the football team,
00:51that the head coach did that.
00:54Even though it's unpopular, if you were in Todd Munkin's shoes, do you care about the fans when talking about
01:02your quarterback of your football team?
01:03I don't think you can afford to.
01:05So, we're just going to have to sit here and hope that he's right and we're all wrong and that
01:10he can actually pull something out of this guy.
01:13Yeah, normally fans, this is so interesting because fans are always like, ah, we don't want the owner meddling.
01:21We know that, you know, the old adage, if you're listening to the fans, you should be sitting with them.
01:27And in this case, I think fans are like, listen to us.
01:29We don't want this starting quarterback as the quarterback.
01:31And I do think Todd Munkin came in with a 100% approval rating, like most coaches do.
01:36And I wonder how far down he is right now with fans because he chose the quarterback that they all,
01:42a lot of them, despise.
01:44And there's been some white lies along the way.
01:47Should Todd Munkin have considered the fans in this matter?
01:51They asked it yesterday when he had said something about the fans.
01:54Somebody had asked him.
01:57Somebody had asked Todd.
01:59Who is that somebody who asked Todd?
02:00Jeff Chanel.
02:01Of course.
02:02Chanel!
02:03My question is, does it bother you how the fans reflect on your decision to start now?
02:11Absolutely not.
02:12Would I prefer the latter, like, that we'd all be on the same page?
02:16Yeah, but that has nothing to do with my decision.
02:18Can't ever have anything to do with what my decision is.
02:20My decision's got to be what's the best for the Browns week one all the way through the season.
02:25And as long as I'm the head coach here.
02:28I'm calling it.
02:29From this point forward, it's the Shadell shellacking.
02:32You are walking in to the Shadell shellacking.
02:36Because he has given us the best sound bites.
02:38I mean, Todd is laughing.
02:39All he does is ask questions fans want to know.
02:41That's all he does.
02:42He asks the questions that fans want to know.
02:44All right.
02:45Do you agree with him?
02:46Yes, of course.
02:47Okay, thank God, because I texted you yesterday when you asked that question while that clip was playing yesterday.
02:53And I'm going, I sincerely hope you don't believe that fans should play a role in who he picks as
02:58quarterback.
02:59As unfortunate and agitating as it is, I sincerely hope we are on the same page on this.
03:05I'm glad we are.
03:06I'm relieved.
03:07You can't make these decisions based on that.
03:10But you have to understand the consequences.
03:12And so, I like that Todd was basically laughing this off.
03:17Like, no.
03:18No.
03:19I am putting the guy in that I think gives us the best chance to win.
03:23Now, it's interesting because the majority of fans do not believe that that's the case.
03:28The majority of fans have seen quarterback trackers.
03:30The majority of fans have seen, you know, Shador's really accurate deep ball throws.
03:36I don't need to see a quarterback tracker.
03:38I just sincerely believe, watching the two, that one has thrown the ball better.
03:43But if I were privy to the information that Todd is, like in meetings and things like that, as much
03:49as I don't like the decision, I have to agree with the decision based on the information we have.
03:54Well, you don't have to.
03:55Yes, I do.
03:56Because a lot of people, like the afternoon show, does not agree with this decision whatsoever.
03:59But I cannot look at it as GM Kenny Carman or Jonathan Peterlin or Nick Wilson or anybody else.
04:05I have to look at it as head coach Todd Munkin or Kenny Carman or Anthony Lima or Owen Lotteman.
04:10I have to.
04:11I'm tasked with trying to win football games.
04:13Everything in my job is trying to win a football game week by week by week.
04:18And it's my, it could be my only year here.
04:21They're already talking about it being one and done.
04:23And by the way, you knew that that was going to happen when you made the decision.
04:27So nothing's stupid here.
04:28So you let it all ride out.
04:30See, this is where some of these things don't add up.
04:33You say you didn't watch the tape.
04:34So you wanted to be a head coach so bad you were just going to take anybody.
04:37Didn't you know that this wasn't going to be good?
04:39Are you just here for the paycheck?
04:41Maybe he very well is, which would be a really, really, really sad reflection on him because I wouldn't want
04:48to take a head coaching job that I know I might only have one year and Deshaun Watson's going to
04:53be my quarterback.
04:55Could you imagine?
04:58Because as we see with Hugh Jackson, reputation means just as much as money for these guys.
05:03And to have that type of reputation, a guy who goes on podcasts all the time trying to tell everybody
05:08he's not a loser.
05:09I wouldn't want that to happen to me.
05:12And so I think that there should have been some selection in there.
05:15So if you were selective, common sense says he should have been, then you're making this decision to try to
05:21win.
05:22And the reason you did is because of things that fans and media are not privy to see.
05:27Well, look, we had a coaching staff and an organization, maybe not so much the staff, maybe more of the
05:33organization, but we lived through this where they did what the fans wanted.
05:37And that was get Johnny Manziel, you know, any kind of love, any kind of opportunity when he did not
05:45deserve it, he did not earn it.
05:46He was a draft pick, first round draft pick, and we know eventually a first rounder is going to play.
05:51But I'll never forget, I was here every day between Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel.
05:56And Brian Hoyer was annihilating Johnny Manziel in the stuff that mattered.
06:01Johnny Manziel could throw a deep ball.
06:03He could do some sexy things.
06:04He could run around and make plays in training camp and preseason.
06:08And there were some people that believed in him because of that.
06:11But in the end, like, you have to let Kyle Shanahan, who was here, talk some common sense into Mike
06:18Pettin, who was here.
06:19You can't have the fans or the owner dictate a decision like that.
06:25No, no.
06:26So are we not learning our lessons when fans are like, don't care, should have been, should or?
06:32Are we not learning the lessons?
06:34Why is it, like, we look back at the Manziel thing, we're like, obviously we should have trusted the coaches
06:39on this.
06:40The coaches did not want to play Johnny Manziel.
06:42Why is it now we're like, well, the coaches are wrong?
06:45Let me ask you this, though.
06:46How many Browns fans, but there was a belief back in those days.
06:51I think they have.
06:52At least I hope so, but I think they actually have.
06:54Which some guys are definitely laughing at the radio right now.
06:56I think they have.
06:57How many of those fans believed that this team could be a playoff team with Johnny Manziel back then?
07:04Probably more than I'd like to admit.
07:06Because he was a first-round guy, big-time Heisman Trophy winner, did some crazy things athletically with his arm
07:13and with his feet, right?
07:15How many fans really think that this is a playoff team with Shador Sanders instead of Deshaun Watson?
07:22This group.
07:243%, 2%, 1%.
07:26That's why I think they just want to be happy.
07:28I think Shador Sanders is in so many ways the same argument as we had the other day with Luke
07:35Floria.
07:36They know they're not going to be great.
07:38They just want to be happy.
07:40They want something passable that they can kind of be interested in and like.
07:45And if they don't have that and they know they're going to be not very good and the everything we're
07:49looking at is for 2027, they don't want to be agitated.
07:53And Shador Sanders, even if you didn't like Shador Sanders, you're definitely curious about Shador Sanders.
07:58But the other guy, the other guy brings up some bad memories and some bad, bad stuff about what could
08:05have been.
08:06And I don't think that you go into that conversation lightly.
08:09Maybe in the back of his head, there is some little consideration for how fans are going to react.
08:15And maybe that was even one of the questions asked during his interview process.
08:19Do you have the guts to stand in there and make a decision that you firmly believe?
08:23But if you only had one chance at this, and you have to assume that he only does have one
08:28chance at this, you have to do no matter what Kenny and Anthony and everybody else says, you have to
08:34do what you think is going to be right to help you win and win as soon as possible.
08:38And it's based on everything we didn't see.
08:40And if you don't have full confidence, which I can't imagine he has full confidence.
08:43I know what he's saying.
08:44I can't imagine he does.
08:46You better hurry the backup up as quick as you can and get him on this right page.
