00:01From news and notes to the coaches and players for America's team, let us go Inside the Star on 105
00:08.3 The Fan.
00:12Trainee camp returning to the Ford Center at the Star in Frisco.
00:16Clarence Hill said as many people out there as he can remember in years.
00:22Did he?
00:23He tweeted it.
00:25Clarence, Clarence, you like brought us my name and your eyes checked.
00:29Because, I don't know, it's funny.
00:30We were sitting there and we were actually down talking by the field and we were like,
00:32is this as many people as usually are in here?
00:35There were like three of us talking.
00:36It wasn't like light by any means, but it was.
00:39Here's the tweet.
00:40Cowboy fans in Dallas are excited about the team, believing the hype.
00:43Biggest crowd in years at night practice at Ford for welcoming of training camp.
00:47I would disagree with Clarence on that one, but it was.
00:50There were people out there.
00:51It was definitely not like.
00:52This is a pretty packed photo.
00:54That's on one side.
00:55The other side of the thing, they usually have people filled in on both sides.
00:58The other side was a little more sparse.
01:00It was a WWE event kind of thing.
01:03I mean, it was not a bad crowd.
01:04It was just a normal crowd, basically, for them.
01:07It definitely was not Oxnard, what was it, two years ago?
01:09Or was that last year where nobody was wanting to show up?
01:12Whatever side Jay Ratliff was on last night, the crowd went to the other side.
01:16That's exactly what it was.
01:17They were on the other side of Jay Ratliff.
01:19Because he did pop up yesterday.
01:21You see the picture of him still?
01:22I did not.
01:24He's still as imposing as ever.
01:25Yeah, he looks like he could go out there and give you a few snaps.
01:28He is.
01:29Still, he's a big guy.
01:31And I was asking people around there, I was like, is this the first time he's come back
01:34since, you know.
01:35Look at him next to Mickey.
01:37I mean, I look like that next to Mickey.
01:40Yeah, so he's, no, he was, I asked a couple people, I was like, is that the first time he's
01:44been back since all the weirdness that happened?
01:47And they're like, yeah, I think so.
01:48What weirdness?
01:49There was a lot of weirdness.
01:50Yeah, the specific one of just like, hey, Jay Ratliff may be coming back to the facility
01:54today.
01:55Alert the security team and all that when that happened.
01:58I think that was like the very last days of Valley Ranch.
02:01But no, he was out there and hanging around.
02:04It was quite a trio.
02:05It was Jay Ratliff, Josh Brent, and Charles Haley hanging out watching practice together.
02:11Wow.
02:12But no, he was out there and looked just happy as can be, hugging people, saying hi to everyone.
02:19Looked like he was happy.
02:20Looked like he was feeling good.
02:22But practice itself, we got the thing we've been waiting for the entire time.
02:26And of course, nobody could film it because he waited until he got back to Frisco to do
02:30it unless you want to go catch a fans video of it.
02:33But we got the Caleb Downs interception finally.
02:35One in the red zone, right in the back.
02:38Cowboys.com put it out.
02:39Yeah, and that was the one that was, we just didn't get the John Michauda angle, the classic
02:44John Michauda angle of what we have.
02:46But this is one where I don't know that I love the decision to throw the ball there anyway.
02:51It's like in double coverage, but Caleb Downs, yeah, Caleb Downs steps in front of it, picks
02:56it off, and then legitimately punts the ball 50 yards in the air.
03:00I know everyone, including Bobby, were more impressed with the punt.
03:04This is not like he kicks it and it lands on the 25 and rolls for 25 yards.
03:08This was in the air, hang time, Tom Ruin-esque, just touching the sky, basically, and then
03:15landing past the 50 after he kicked it at the goal line.
03:18What if it hits somebody?
03:21See, he kicked it in the air.
03:22He didn't kick it forward.
03:24That was the thing.
03:25They have helmets and pads.
03:26But no, Caleb Downs getting the pick.
03:27Oh, there was a high school football joke.
03:29A high school kid, yeah.
03:29I got him.
03:30I got him.
03:30He made sure to chirp towards Dak's direction to trash talk, everything else.
03:34So it was a moment for him that he had been waiting for, clearly.
03:39George Pickens was great, again, in this practice.
03:42By the way, was that the same play that he broke up the seedy route in camp?
03:49This was like a drag where he kind of just stepped in to the other side of it.
03:54It was a little bit different.
03:55But this was, yeah, this was red zone work.
03:57This was inside the 10, a drag, and Dak getting a little greedy, it looked like.
04:01But George Pickens had a great day, again.
04:04He had a couple of really nice catches.
04:05There was one where Kobe Durant was draped all over him,
04:08and he still plucked the ball out of the sky.
04:10And he was letting guys hear about it like he's been doing all training camp so far.
04:14Did Kobe Durant, I could not tell from the angle that we were sitting at
04:18in the press box at the Ford Center if he got the ball tipped and broken up
04:23or he just had a flat drop in the end zone during red zone period.
04:27But no real big standout place from seedy again.
04:29George Pickens, if you want to just go by what we've seen in these practices,
04:32George Pickens has been the better receiver so far.
04:34Yeah.
04:34It was a little disappointing that the very first time we saw Vaughn Miller
04:38step up there in team play, he immediately jumped off sides.
04:40Welcome to the Cowboys.
04:41Yeah.
04:41I was like, boy, if Brian Broaddus could be here now to tell all of us
04:44what a mistake this was.
04:46Those should be James Houston's reps.
04:48But Dak got the free play, tried to fit it into Pickens.
04:51Kalen Carson had a nice breakup.
04:52But it was an immediate jump off sides.
04:54I think that was the only time I remember seeing Vaughn Miller out there
04:57for team period was that one snap, I think.
05:00He probably went over by the stands taking selfies.
05:03Yeah.
05:03He was over there.
05:04He was tossing people hats back in the crowd that had dropped him.
05:07He was loving life, talking to guys off to the side, coaching them up.
05:11So that's...
05:12I love that this is a guy who's not acting like he's a surefire,
05:15all-time great Hall of Famer.
05:17He's acting like he just got drafted.
05:20Yeah.
05:20This is his welcome tour to the NFL.
05:24I wonder if he was like this in Buffalo.
05:26I wonder if he was like this in D.C.
05:27Probably not as giddy, but...
05:29Yeah.
05:29Would you be like that in Buffalo?
05:30I wouldn't.
05:32That's miserable.
05:33Fans there, anyway.
05:34In Buffalo, they're smashing him through tables.
05:36They're jumping onto the field to say hey to him.
05:38But Vaughn Miller had that one off side.
05:40Other than that, we didn't really see him.
05:41There were a couple different things I noticed that were interesting about the rotations.
05:44Bland never comes off the field in the corner room.
05:46That really...
05:47I know Steven had already said, we've got Bland,
05:49and then we're working stuff out with the other one.
05:51He never comes off the field.
05:52It really is.
05:53If there's first-team corner reps, they're rotating Revel and Durant only.
05:57Todd Archer tweeted this, and I was like, hmm...
06:02Noteworthy.
06:02Seems like Kobe Durant will be the starter opposite of Bland as week one approaches.
06:08Savone Revel has had a nice camp, but Durant is getting to work with the ones.
06:13Would that be an upset?
06:15How much of a surprise if it was Durant with Durant?
06:19So, I think everybody has...
06:21A lot of fans are going to be like, what the heck?
06:23What the heck?
06:23All the Revel hype.
06:24And the games have only helped that.
06:27Like, the two games he played, he got the interception in the second week.
06:30The first game, he just...
06:31He played well.
06:32And so, I think it's easy for fans to look and go, what has Kobe Durant done?
06:36It's like, well, it's easy to forget.
06:37Kobe Durant...
06:38We were out there for a couple practices where it felt like Kobe Durant was one of the best
06:41players they had on the field.
06:42And he was...
06:44He was sticking to George Pickens yesterday.
06:46Pickens was making some great catches.
06:47There wasn't really anything you could do about it.
06:49But, yeah, he took the first team reps at corner.
06:53They split him up, essentially.
06:54He was like the first half of practice.
06:56Then Revel got in.
06:57But Revel was definitely beginning the day with the twos.
06:59It was him and Carson out there with the twos.
07:02The first quarterback to get work with the twos was Joe Milton.
07:05So, Milton is the one rotating in first.
07:08I think there was like one rep I missed leading into it.
07:12So, I could be off on this.
07:14But I'm pretty sure Jaden Blue was the fifth running back to get into whole practice reps.
07:22Because it was definitely Javante Williams with the ones.
07:25I believe it was Malik Davis was the next one to sub in and work with the ones behind Javante.
07:32And then when the twos came in, it was a Banacanda first.
07:35And then it was Mafa after a Banacanda.
07:37And then after a Mafa carry, then Blue came in there.
07:40So, he obviously had that banged up shoulder that they were talking about.
07:44But he was in the game and playing well and didn't seem to have any issues.
07:47But he was, I believe, the fifth running back to finally sub in and get practice reps yesterday.
07:52Other than that, Camden Brown had a really nice route on Devin Moore.
07:54Continues to work really well in practice.
07:57There was one throw down the sideline where I can't remember who was in coverage.
08:01It may have been Speed that was down there.
08:03But Camden Brown got absolutely no separation.
08:05And I was sitting there thinking, all right, this is the Gavin Dawson talking point right here.
08:10Didn't complete the pass.
08:11Speed was there, able to break it up easily.
08:13The very next play, he drives on the route, sells the vertical, drives hard back on the comeback,
08:20picks up a nice 15-yard gain on Devin Moore.
08:23You can choose to look at that how you want.
08:25Oh, look, nice job, Camden Browner.
08:26Devin Moore, fourth rounder.
08:27Come on, step it up.
08:28This is becoming a problem.
08:29Put my hands back on social media yesterday as I got caught up.
08:32I was tagged in some of the Gavin Dawson back and forth as Gavin put up the fight on his
08:38Camden Brown take.
08:39And I just, I said, let me go in the Homer Simpson bushes on this one.
08:44I'll see you in Oxnard, sir.
08:46One year away.
08:47Do 90 seconds of research on how unathletic he is, Dawson says.
08:51He's not going to get open against real defenses.
08:54Hell, he couldn't win against SEC defenses.
08:57He's not particularly strong.
08:58He can't cut laterally enough to separate, has a good first 10 yards, and can go up.
09:03I don't think he'll have 500 yards for his NFL career if he is ever active.
09:10So, he's going strong with it.
09:13You know, I respect the take because the odds are probably on Dawson's side.
09:18Yeah.
09:19It's an undrafted free agent receiver who's fighting for, like, the last roster spot.
09:23I'll see, like, three snaps.
09:25If he would have said this about Dennis Houston, he would have been right about Dennis Houston.
09:28And so, now, I do think Camden Brown has been completely different, and he's playing at a level that these
09:33other guys haven't.
09:34But if you want to take all the receivers in the past who have stood out as undrafted free agents,
09:39I think just about all of them have failed to get to 500 yards in their career.
09:43So, he's not wrong at that point.
09:45Just Dawson will have to be prepared to say, all right, I was wrong, and not complain if people want
09:49to circle back to him on it.
09:50But then the biggest thing that happened out there yesterday, we actually heard Jayshon Barham say words.
09:57Not so fast, my friend.
09:58Because your boy, with what people are saying was the catch of the day with a Brevin Spanford touchdown.
10:05As you said, you feel totally fine about Spanford as the two or if he needed to fill in for
10:12Jake Ferguson if he missed any time.
10:14And then DallasCowboys.com did write about Kaelin Carson having a nice day.
10:19Carson had a decent day.
10:21Again, I think some of it, because I remember the play that everybody was like, oh, that was a nice
10:25play by Carson.
10:25I don't think anybody realized Vaughn Miller had jumped offsides and that it was a free play.
10:29And so, it was a fitted in there.
10:31But, I mean, like in real game terms, that wouldn't have counted like what Carson did.
10:35But Carson was out there playing well enough.
10:37Like I said, he was in there when Dak threw a pass.
10:39So, they subbed Carson in, gave him a little bit of time to work in with the ones.
10:43But Spanford, that was probably the catch of the day.
10:46The only one that would be in competition was the one with Pickens with Durant draped all over him.
