Shan and Bobby went Inside The Star and listened to the newest Cowboys linebacker Dee Winters' first Dallas media session. They broke down how he fits into the new defensive scheme, his "run and hit" potential, debated whether he’s ready to handle the "green dot" play-calling responsibilities, and more.

00:00and he had a conference call with the media yesterday and he talked about in his first
00:04clip here this is 27 we'll go all the way down jacob um he talked to this first clip just
00:09about
00:09what his conversations have been like so far with christian parker and the the anticipation for what
00:15it is he'll be doing yeah just uh he went to get me in space he feels like one of
00:19my uh assets is
00:21me being in space and being over to you know make tackles in space and um just running hit with
00:26my
00:26physicality and speed that i bring to the game and um i think uh him and i both are excited
00:31to
00:31see what that looks like and you know um go from there i love the little tells you can get
00:37just
00:38from specific language like you hear a specific word or you hear specific things and you go oh
00:45okay like so clearly one of the big things here is d winner saying get me in space that run
00:50and hit
00:50factor when we played the clip from mitch la pointe the cowboys director of college scouting a couple
00:55days ago when he was talking about what did d winners bring to the table the very first thing
00:58he said was man you're just talking about that run and hit factor and what he can do in space
01:02and so
01:02that clearly is like that is the focus the the focus here with d winners is keep him clean let's
01:08make
01:08sure we're playing good in the trenches keeping blockers off him get him out in space and let him
01:12just explode and destroy ball carriers that's going to be the big thing for d winners he looks the part
01:18i mean he's aggressive he's a big dude yeah you know the the the real shame in kenneth murray is
01:26he looked like your prototypical linebacker he looked like the dude you would not want to walk
01:32into the locker room with and accidentally bump into yeah and he just couldn't play and um this guy
01:39this guy looks the part the reality is that you couldn't bump into kenneth murray because he'd never
01:43be in a spot so you were never gonna see him in the hole he'd go yeah he would he
01:47would uh he would
01:48read it wrong and he'd step the other direction um and i'm seeing some pass coverage here from
01:53when he's flexible d winners is flexible in fact if you want to talk about i'm seeing some pick sixes
01:58i'm seeing some diving breakups as is the case with some of the some of the aggressive linebackers
02:04that you have in the nfl his biggest problem at times is like there's sometimes a little too much
02:09eagerness and it's a you you you over pursue and that's the sort of thing that happens with it but
02:14you he's generally a pretty fundamentally sound player he's not all pro level but he is definitely
02:20better than anything you had at linebacker last year remember he's the one that philip river sought
02:25out in that prime time game when philip was balling out and winters got him at the end and philip
02:31went
02:31and sought him out and he's like you read it you saw it nice job yeah he's uh and he's
02:36been he's a
02:37really good student um the the chatter about him is all the work that he puts in and uh the
02:43time on
02:43task that he has is a big thing and that'll be important because he was asked cut 28 are you
02:48familiar with this type of 3-4 scheme i'm actually learning the playbook now so um there are some
02:53similarities as far as uh what we're running but um for the most part uh it's a little different for
02:59me but i think i'll excel in the defense for sure competing every day is you know that's the the
03:04least
03:04um that's the thing that you have to do every day is compete and so uh my biggest thing is
03:09coming in
03:09and kind of helping the young guys grow and teach them what i know you know do what i can
03:14do to help
03:15them and exhale their game and um you know build that brotherhood i know it's a new room so um
03:20it's
03:21going to take some time but i'm really excited to get with those guys and uh showing what i'm about
03:26it's not really a surprise i guess that these would be different schemes san francisco and dallas since
03:32dallas win also diggy zoo is not going to fit san francisco y'all want him yep we'll take him
03:36that's because there's this is a little bit of like hey we got our mix uh maybe our mismatched
03:41parts a little bit how do we swap them out the big thing the the big discussion point that was
03:46out
03:46there obviously heading into the draft and the thing you could say they didn't yet they addressed a lot
03:50of their needs but if you want to say there's a specific they didn't get it was the green dot
03:53thing
03:55and everybody had said all right we got to go out there we got to get the green dot linebacker
03:58get that
03:58they didn't they didn't get that uh they didn't get it in the draft they didn't get it in this
04:02trade
04:02for d winners because he was asked about that how much experience do you have with the green dot
04:07no i do not um actually last year is when they start kind of implementing me in that spot a
04:11little
04:11bit um but as far as experience i really haven't had any i've only done a few practices with the
04:17green
04:17dot so um that'll be new but it's the first time for everything and you know i'm willing to do
04:22whatever it takes honestly i feel like i do a pretty good job of communicating um at the will
04:26linebacker position but being a light being a mike linebacker you have to be able to you know run
04:32the defense and make the cause and i think that takes a lot of film study and um it's kind
04:37of a
04:39different um aspect to the game that not a lot of other guys do so um i think just taking
04:43a film room
04:44um extremely serious and uh you know just running it let's just say they don't add any other
04:51linebackers and we're in oxnard for practice number one who's gonna who's gonna do this
04:58and here's my follow-up question are you just relaying what christian parker is telling you
05:05or how much more are you having to add on with your own knowledge versus just repeating the call
05:11so because if it's just repeating the call i mean who cares well so you're gonna put in the call
05:18and then a lot of times the green dot is then also gonna be responsible for or just the mic
05:23will
05:23be responsible for surveying and looking and seeing is everybody lined up at like the technique they're
05:29supposed to be so like you'll see sometimes on tape um like when sean lee was here sean lee you
05:35would see him physically walk down to the defensive line and he'd like smack somebody's side like move
05:39over like get into your gap and like you're kind of directing things and putting guys in in position
05:43that's why the mic is generally you're right in the middle of the defense you're on the the second
05:48level between the first and third you are dead center so you can kind of you're you're the closest
05:52point for everybody as a rallying point and that's why it doesn't make sense for like caleb downs if he's
05:57playing traditional safety to do it because you're not in the best communicating area you're in the back
06:02it's it's harder just sometimes a lot of times to like direct everything from all the way in the back
06:07you're far the farthest away there's a little teams will use pretty frequently though the nickel
06:11because the nickel is up on the line of scrimmage he's closer in line to the defensive side you've
06:16obviously got the far corner but that's a lot of hand signals that you can do in different things
06:19like that um but i would guess practice one oh uh i'm gonna guess they're gonna try to make d
06:27winners do it or see how he can handle thing in otas and different things like that d winners or
06:32there's they're very well maybe a chance that that's caleb downs what about over shown it doesn't
06:38sound like they've wanted him to have that like it's not like a thing that they don't think he's
06:42capable of it's just they it seems like they want to get him focused on just playing reactive they
06:48don't want to necessarily have him orchestrating and directing all the traffic uh d winners talked
06:52with the dallas media yesterday uh the dallas cowboys new veteran linebacker and if you're gonna have
06:58run the green dot if you're gonna run a defense do all those different things you need to learn
07:02obviously from coaches and it also helps to learn from veterans who are on top of things
07:06probably no better veteran to learn from than fred warner who d winners has played next to for the
07:10last couple years so d winners what did you learn from fred warner his day-to-day life as as
07:15being a
07:15linebacker um you know how to watch film how to you know come to practice or come to work every
07:21day and
07:21the attention to detail that he brought um i think that's what really makes him the best and um i
07:26think
07:26he does it at a high level obviously and you know i feel like um from a communicator standpoint how
07:31he
07:31runs the defense and um just know what offenses are going to do like he's a nerd at heart when
07:38it
07:38comes to film so um just being able to soak all that information in while being with him for three
07:43years was amazing and now i'm excited to start my new um venture d winners of course was moving into
07:50a house in arlington when he got the call grew up watching the cowboys with his family took his 30
07:56visit
07:58alongside overshone in 2023 he sent his truck out to california so he was not expecting this move at
08:07all and in california california uh san fran gm john lynch had this to say about him uh d has
08:15done a lot
08:16for us but six round pick at a tcu uh we felt like our linebacker room was going to be
08:23in a good spot d is
08:25one of the favorite guys in that locker room amongst his teammates so that's the really the
08:30thing from john lynch that jumped out to me the cowboys started bringing this up around the time
08:36of the osa trade me and stephen jones got a good relationship we kind of held it off for a
08:43while
08:43we wanted to see what was going to happen in the draft but the cowboys stayed on it yeah cowboys
08:47were
08:47i mean this is part of the surveying of the the linebacker landscape they did where we talked about
08:52other names patrick queen aziz al shair uh jordan brooks that was all part of that evaluation and
08:57kind of looking over it we mentioned though the the idea about the green dot and what they've got
09:01at linebacker now uh we've been peppering in some of these clips from personnel guys that came on after
09:08the draft uh mitch lapointe who we just referenced their director of college scouting who talked about
09:12what he liked about d winners uh similarly we've heard already that they're going to play jay sean
09:16barham at linebacker instead of edge and there were a lot of people who projected edge yeah i was
09:21watching um even more draft review last night this is like a problem watching adult entertainment for
09:29you now i need a practice i need i need i need otas i need minicamp i need actual football
09:33to take
09:34place and the guy minicamp today what's that we got rookie minicamp today um some of the guys that i
09:41was watching were saying i really don't like him at linebacker versus edge oh well mitch lapointe's
09:48going to tell you why those guys are wrong trevor sykema oh the physicality and the speed and
09:54athleticism like i went back and watched all of 24 he started inside backer but i mean he's 240 pounds
09:59long arms and he's nasty you know and he's got ability to pressure the quarterback he can blitz he
10:04actually in coverage he's for his size he's really good so i mean going back there like okay week three
10:10after week three they move him to edge really just to get their best 11 on the field but yeah
10:14he's got
10:15he's got all the tools to play linebacker and we played that clip from uh ross winchie a couple
10:19days ago where he said absolutely can be an inside backer that's not a reach projection at all he can
10:25absolutely play that and i i personally when i was watching him i liked him better at linebacker
10:29it is again the the baby arvel reese or the the like lesser man's arvel reese comparison that's out
10:35there reese was a guy who right now plays better linebacker than than he does edge but the instincts
10:39are there so i think the ability is there for him to do a little bit of both obviously but
10:44i would not be surprised if the projection being linebacker kind of just holds and he is a
10:49linebacker who just blitzes is how they end up using him mike florio will join us at eight o'clock
10:54this morning from profootballtalk.com to talk about chris sims mike vrabel and george pickens is that
11:01because choppy's gone that mike agreed to come on florio's like yeah fine i'll be able to i did
11:07he had a uh he put a mark sanchez update the other day and i was looking at the cover
11:12image that he used
11:12and it looked like it was like an eagles photo or something i was about ready to troll the hell
11:16it turned out it's jets but i'm i'm keeping track of that every time now to see what picture he
11:20posts
11:21just so the chop can be happy
11:22happy
11:22you
