Severe thunderstorms are expected across Indiana this afternoon. AccuWeather Meteorologist Bernie Rayno explains the risk of damaging winds, flash flooding and tornadoes.
Transcript
00:00We have a moderate risk for severe weather today in the Midwest, specifically in Indiana.
00:05Some of the cities within that moderate risk, South Bend, Fort Wayne, Kokomo, Lafayette.
00:11What are we worried about? Locally damaging wind gusts, flash flooding, and I do believe there will be a few
00:18tornadoes today.
00:19It won't be an outbreak, but I could see two or three.
00:22Let me show you future radar, and here's what I have concerned.
00:25By the middle part of the afternoon, look at those thunderstorms in Michigan and Indiana.
00:29You see those cells? They're what we call discrete cells, these individual thunderstorm cells.
00:34They oftentimes can produce tornadoes, so I could see one or two with those.
00:39Now, as we go through the afternoon, you start seeing the signature of the radar change a little bit from
00:45individual cells to solid lines of thunderstorms.
00:49That's called a linear representation. That usually produces damaging winds.
00:55There still could be an isolated tornado, but it's mostly damaging winds.
00:58Watch Indiana this afternoon. That's an area where we have the moderate risk, where we think the severe storms are
01:04most numerous.
01:05The yellow, spotty severe storms.
01:07Chicago, you're on the western side of this.
01:10Detroit, Indianapolis, toward Evansville.
01:13Thunderstorms could be severe late today.
