AccuWeather's Tony Laubach reports from Wichita, Kansas, where storms are expected to kick start a multiday severe weather event. Tornado watches have been reported in parts of Iowa and Nebraska.
Transcript
00:00An active stretch of severe weather is going to get kick-started here across the southern and central plains.
00:05Today we already have tornado watches up across portions of Iowa and Nebraska
00:10and expect that severe weather threat to extend south here into Kansas as well as into Oklahoma,
00:15possibly even north Texas.
00:16A widespread event for us here today and this will be just the start as we are expecting multiple days
00:22heading through the weekend into early next week.
00:25It can be shaping up for the threat of widespread damaging winds, large to very large hail,
00:30and of course that tornado threat will exist as well.
00:33Today we're going to get started here.
00:34We are in Wichita, Kansas.
00:36We are likely going to be stationed here on the southern end of where that cold front triple point is
00:40going to set up,
00:41looking at the potential for some large hail and damaging winds.
00:44And again, if we can keep an isolated storm in the mix, that tornado threat will exist as well.
00:48A little bit more conditional further to the south across Oklahoma,
00:51where a stronger cap, warmer air at the surface, preventing storms from forming,
00:56that will likely keep storms at bay down further to the south.
00:59But if a storm or two can get going down in that neck of the woods,
01:02certainly some significant severe weather there as well.
01:04Friday, the severe weather threat shifts a little bit further to the south and east,
01:08a lower end day, but then the weekend really starts to ramp things up.
01:11Both Saturday and Sunday looking pretty significant,
01:13and then we shift back toward the Midwest as we get into Monday.
01:16So a very active stretch.
01:17We'll be out covering here for the next several days.
01:19Reporting from Wichita, Kansas for AccuWeather, I'm meteorologist Tony Laubach.
