00:00All right, some emergency department patients have observed a practice that I witnessed myself
00:06in a 2019 ER visit at UAB Hospital in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. Now, University of Alabama
00:15at Birmingham acquired the five St. Vincent's Hospitals from provider ascension in 2024.
00:23It's interesting to see what policies St. Vincent's adopted as a result of the acquisition.
00:32So one thing that I saw in my five-hour wait were other patients with various injuries.
00:40They would approach the front desk. They would simply ask how much longer their wait was going to be.
00:47I've never seen anything quite like the response to this. I thought it highly unethical.
00:53And additionally, inhumane on the part of the hospital staff, they would repeatedly express anger
01:01at this question and threaten the patients that they would be asked to leave or be removed
01:10from the hospital emergency department if they asked again. I've got some current data
01:19on the wait times. This week, I'm recording this July 26, 2026. UAB St. Vincent's Hospital
01:29in downtown Birmingham. Two reviews up here which talk about a 10-hour ER wait. This week, one patient
01:40writes,
02:03Another review from one week ago, they write,
02:07An absolute joke of an ER currently still waiting nine hours and saw no one. I truly wonder where the
02:17triage nurse got her degree. Everyone is rude, mean, and unprofessional. Needless to say, I would never
02:26ever come back. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. This is for the UAB St. Vincent's
02:32East Emergency Department on the outskirts of the Birmingham metro area, close to Trustville.
02:40They write,
02:41Major Con, definitely be prepared to wait. It's Birmingham, so it's a busy ER.
02:47We had to come to the ER because my brother was having a severe hypertensive emergency. And when
02:54my mom asked about the wait time, after six hours of being in the waiting room, a white-skinned lady
03:02up front got pretty rude, stating something along the lines of,
03:07This is the ER. Don't come up here asking about the wait.
03:11I get that it's a difficult job, but it's important for healthcare workers to keep their
03:17cool and be polite, especially in the emergency room where people are having the worst days of
03:22their lives. That was definitely a notable part of our experience.
