10:03If I testify about myself
10:06Then my testimony is not true
10:10But there is another who testifies about me
10:12And I know the testimony he testifies about me is true
10:17You have sent to John
10:19And he has testified to the truth
10:22I do not accept human testimony
10:25But I say this to you
10:27That you may be saved
10:29He was a lamp that was burning and shining
10:32And you wanted to rejoice greatly
10:34For a short time in his light
10:37But I have a testimony greater than that from John
10:41For the deeds that the Father has assigned to me to complete
10:44The deeds that I am now doing
10:48Testify about me that the Father has sent me
10:51The Father who has sent me
10:53Has himself testified about me
10:58You people have never heard his voice
11:00Or seen his form at any time
11:03Nor do you have his word residing in you
11:06Because you do not believe the one whom he sent
11:12You study the scriptures thoroughly
11:14Because you think in them you will possess eternal life
11:18And it is these same scriptures that testify about me
11:22But you are not willing to come to me
11:24So that you may have life
11:27I do not accept praise from people
11:29But I know you
11:30That you do not have the love of God within you
11:35I have come in my Father's name
11:37And you do not accept me
11:40If someone else comes in his own name
11:42You will accept him
11:45How can you believe if you accept praise from another
11:48And don't seek the praise that comes from the only God
11:53Do not suppose as I will accuse you before the Father
11:56The one who accuses you is Moses
11:58In whom you have placed your hope
12:01For if you believe Moses you would believe me
12:04Because he wrote about me
12:07But if you do not believe what Moses wrote
12:09How will you believe my words?
12:14This is the word of the Lord

12:29It is evident that the failure of many people to find Christ
12:33Is not from any shortcoming in the means of discovering him
12:38It is this which our Lord so emphatically refers to
12:41In the case of the Jews
12:43They had the scriptures
12:45And for a profession they searched them
12:48They had the mine and they dug in the mine
12:50In the quest of eternal riches
12:54They not only venerated
12:55But they also almost worshipped the sacred volumes
13:01With privileges far less than the mass of professing Christians have now
13:06They improved them far more
13:10And yet after all they failed
13:13Multitudes of those who searched the scriptures
13:16Failed to find Christ
13:18Or if they found him
13:20Found him only in order to reject him
13:25This failure does not arise
13:27From a want of intelligence
13:30From the right understanding in the use of the means
13:34Let us observe the case of the Jews
13:36We have seen
13:38How they searched the oracles of divine truth
13:40And let us now observe the views which they searched them
13:45You searched the scriptures
13:46Said Christ
13:47Because in them you think you have eternal life
13:52They so in this way
13:55Sought the right thing
13:58And they looked in the right place
14:01How many Bible readers today
14:03Are there of whom
14:06Even this much can be said
14:11Surely we may ask if the Pharisees and scribes
14:13Of those degenerate under happy days
14:16Were not nearer the kingdom of heaven
14:18Than many of ourselves
14:28Note then the true reason for the failure of these men
14:33The evil lay in the will
14:36You are not willing said Christ
14:37To come to me that you might have eternal life
14:42It is a moral perversity
14:44But not an intellectual defect
14:46Not a want of light
14:48But a want of love
14:51And the reason for this unwillingness is twofold
14:55The fleshly nature of the heart
14:57By nature and by habit
14:59We live immersed in the things of sense
15:02At home
15:04Amongst the things outward
15:05Material
15:07Tangible
15:08We with difficulty rise to any concept
15:11Or contemplation
15:13Of things spiritual
15:14And unseen
15:18And secondly
15:19We have a love of sin
15:22We instinctively feel
15:23That we cannot come to Jesus
15:25And live in his divine and holy fellowship
15:28And yet live in sin
15:31They feel that there is a natural
15:33And eternal incompatibility
15:36Between the two things
15:38They may come to Jesus
15:39Just as they are
15:40But they cannot abide with Jesus
15:43Just as they are
15:45Therefore he and they remain strangers forever
15:53We should take from this
15:55The preciousness of the Bible
15:57As a means of leading us to Christ
15:59But also the worthlessness of the Bible
16:04If it does not lead us to Christ
16:10Men
16:11Before regeneration
16:13They depart from the salvation of God
16:15Are in a state which Jesus counts and calls death
16:23With this remark of the Saviour
16:25The true condition of sinners is seen with clear distinction
16:30There is no room left here for dispute or mistake

17:40Nothing more is needed
17:41Than to come to Jesus
17:43No qualifications are demanded
17:45No selection of person
17:47According to merit
17:48Is made
17:51None are excluded
17:53For the presence of one quality
17:54Or the absence of another
17:57To the dead one thing only is essential
18:01That they should come to Christ
18:08Those who are spiritually dead
18:10Are not willing to come to Christ for life
18:13This seems strange
18:15Even the Lord himself wondered
18:17At their unbelief
18:19It is the very mystery of iniquity
18:22That man's resistance to the divine proposal
18:25Is great in proportion to the easiness
18:28Of its terms
18:32Jesus complains that men will not come to him
18:35For life
18:37It follows from this
18:38As clear and sure as the reflection of your face in the mirror
18:43That he delights to give
18:45To be eternal life to the lost
18:49Here the Saviour opens his heart
18:51That we may look in and see the love that fills it
18:56I do not know of any passage of scripture
18:59Where the compassion of Jesus flows more freely
19:04When interpreted correctly
19:07This is more consoling than any promise
19:10More solemnising than any terror
19:13When Jesus tells us what grieves him
19:16We learn with certainty what would make him glad
19:20The inference is infallible
19:23No truth can be more plain
19:25Or more sure than this
19:27That the flight of sinners to himself for life
19:30Is the chief delight of God our Saviour
19:39Jesus asks that they disregard what he said about himself
19:46But attended to what John the Baptist had had to say about him previously
19:52His observation in verse 31
19:54Shows a great humility on his part
19:57Reducing himself
19:58To a mere man
20:00Because it is well considered that all men are liars
20:04Psalm 116
20:05As our love of ourselves is greater than our love for the truth
20:11The words of Jesus however were of course absolutely true
20:15But he wishes to reduce the value of his own evidence
20:18In the hope that they may pay more heed to the words of John
20:22An independent witness whom they had revered
20:28Having made this observation and reminding them that John
20:31Who they accepted as a prophet
20:34Had confirmed every word that he had said of himself
20:38Jesus returned to his case
20:40And pointed out that he spoke with an authority far greater than that of John
20:46And if they consider the venility of what he is claiming
20:49They should look no further than what he is doing and saying
20:56However, his critics were far too wrapped up in their own self-importance
21:01To be able to accept a word of what he was saying to them
21:06They are convicted by their love of learning
21:10Because they fail to understand the true meaning of what it is that they have learnt
21:18Jesus quoted from Moses and condemned them by their own stupidity
21:22For on the one hand they accept the teaching of Moses
21:27But on the other hand they cannot accept what he taught
21:30For he spoke of the Messiah
21:32And now that they are confronted by him
21:34They fail to recognise or accept him
21:40What then was the good of all their learning and their study of the Scriptures
21:44If when the prophecies unfold before their very eyes
21:48They fail to accept it
21:53This is a very real and present danger that many of us can fall into
21:58There is nothing wrong at all with the love of studying our Bibles
22:02Indeed, it is our spiritual food and something that we should do constantly
22:09However, we need to remember that we need to have Jesus living in our hearts
22:15As well as a knowledge of Jesus in our brain
22:20If we fail to accept Jesus into our heart
22:23Then we cannot be filled with the Holy Spirit
22:26And receive the grace of God
22:30We will end up like the people Jesus was addressing in this passage
22:36Overly educated but spiritually sterile
22:41Unable, as it were, to distinguish a tree from the forest
22:52Let us pray
22:55Almighty and everlasting God
22:56Who is always more ready to hear than we are to pray
23:00Who is willing to give more than either we desire nor deserve
23:05Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy
23:09Forgive us those things of which our conscience is afraid
23:13And giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask
23:17But through the merit and mediation of Jesus Christ
23:22Your Son, our Lord
