Andy and Jeff discuss what they're hoping to see from Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson this week when the Browns hold joint practices against the Buffalo Bills
Transcript
00:01What do you need to see out of these quarterbacks this week, Andy?
00:04What do I want?
00:05I want Shadour just to go out there and light it up on Saturday.
00:08That's exactly what I want.
00:09I want Shadour Sanders to go out there, light it up,
00:12so we're not talking about pre-snap anything.
00:14We're not talking about post-snap anything other than touchdowns
00:17and moving the ball forward.
00:19No sacks, no block passes, no penalties walking up to the line.
00:25Just move the ball down the field so we all walk out of Saturdays
00:29going, Saturday's game, I get it.
00:32I get it.
00:33Shadour's our starting quarterback.
00:34Okay, that's what I want to see.
00:36What if Deshaun does the same thing in the third quarter?
00:37But it's the third quarter.
00:39And the other problem is they're going to marry.
00:42Deshaun did it in the first half last game.
00:44The Bears told Albert Breer, people in Chicago,
00:48yeah, certainly looks like Watson to us.
00:51Okay, well, does it matter to them?
00:53No, because they don't have to watch the Browns every week.
00:54We do.
00:56We get to watch the Browns every week.
00:59And my point is, like, as far as the draft next year.
01:04I think it just shook his head, no.
01:05I'll be honest.
01:06Uh-uh.
01:06This is that moment where all of a sudden they become your kid
01:09and not our kid.
01:10Yeah, we have to watch the Browns this week.
01:13I get to watch the Browns this week.
01:15Yeah, he's your child.
01:17They're my team.
01:18You fix them.
01:20I've been trying for about 15 years right here on this station.
01:23By the way, you need to come up with some more money.
01:27They're paying for school supplies because these crayons aren't paying
01:30for themselves.
01:33Now go talk to your team.
01:36I think Deshaun played well enough.
01:39And by the way, quit embarrassing your kid, putting your fingers in
01:43to make sure that the waistband is right when you're trying on these
01:46new school jeans.
01:49What are you saying about Tugboat?
01:52Okay, we're going to a place where we just should not go right now.
01:56I'm just letting you know that.
01:58So, would you agree with this?
02:01Yeah, no.
02:02Pretty clear.
02:03And forget circumstances and who's on the field with them and everything else,
02:08blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
02:10Deshaun played overall probably a little bit better than Shadour and Dylan
02:14Gabriel did.
02:15Okay?
02:16So, I think that's the case.
02:19Oh, Jeff, the bar is so low right now.
02:21Well, without question, Andy.
02:22But this is where we are.
02:23So, this is what Todd Munkin is choosing from.
02:26I would hope that Shadour goes out and playing with better talent around him
02:31for most of his time out there, that he will be better than the guys who
02:36follow him against the Bills.
02:37So, I would hope Shadour looks better than Deshaun Watson does in the third
02:41quarter.
02:42He should.
02:44He's going to have better people with him.
02:47Correct?
02:48Correct.
02:49I would also think the offensive line gets the first quarter this game.
02:54Again, remember Todd said that he wasn't sure if this is a dress rehearsal
02:59game or not.
03:00Yeah.
03:01Well.
03:01Maybe I'll answer that today.
03:04They're flipping the script, but if they leave the starters on the field more, it
03:08would be a nice advantage for Shadour, and I think that would be a great
03:11opportunity to see what he could do.
03:12So, I hope he looks better because they're putting him in a more advantageous
03:17position coming up on Saturday.
03:20And if Deshaun Watson can go out, I almost expect Deshaun to look terrible.
03:27Almost expect him to look terrible.
03:29I don't know.
03:30Not to look terrible.
03:31Because he's not going to have a whole lot around him.
03:34Yeah, but that still doesn't mean he can't get rid of the football and live to see
03:36another play.
03:38I thought Shadour made three really nice throws in the game the other day, and he
03:43had a couple throws that he certainly didn't like, and they weren't very good, and a couple
03:48of issues.
03:48So, I think he had a couple of moments.
03:51If Deshaun can have a couple of moments, again, if it's all going to be even Steven, and as
03:56Todd said, it wouldn't be fair to Shadour to not have him do this and blah, blah, blah,
04:00blah, blah.
04:00I think we can actually, if that's the way Todd's breaking it up, I think we can actually
04:05look at it and say, okay, well, who looked better against, who looked better with, and
04:11go from there.
04:13I think Todd's going to know who the starting quarterback week one is after the practice
04:18on Thursday.
04:21Jeff, I don't know that Saturday's game is going to mean a whole lot.
04:25Here's one catch to the whole thing.
04:28And we saw it the other day, and Mennegan will scream, yes!
04:34My buddy Jeff in Cleveland sends me a text.
04:36Why does Watson seem like he's Mr. Checkdown?
04:39I want to see the ball thrown down the field.
04:41That's what I was rooting for the entire first half, last game, was like, Deshaun, crank
04:47one up and let it go.
04:48Let's see what you have.
04:49And I don't think we really saw that.
04:52You know, the big play was to Dylan Sampson, but it was a screen pass.
04:56I think we do need to see, and Jeff, I think you're right.
05:00I think we need to see, hey, Deshaun, how's that shoulder?
05:05Can you push off that Achilles and throw the ball down the field?
05:09Shadour clearly can.
05:10Yeah.
05:11You know, and that's, to be honest, that's why at this point when I watched the two of
05:16them play, I think Deshaun had a better game, but I think Shadour is more intriguing.
05:20Because Shadour let her rip a couple of times, got the ball down the field.
05:25Deshaun hasn't done that.
05:26At some point, especially now with wide receiver talent, speedy wide receiver talent, big wide
05:33receiver talent, you're going to have to cut it loose and throw it down the field.
05:36And I think we need to see that from Deshaun.
05:39Now, are they seeing enough of it in practice to make them think, okay, he can do that?
05:43But I do think, and Jeff, I think you're right.
05:46I think that's a big part of this that may or may not be visible to us right now.
05:55What are they doing in practice?
05:57Is Deshaun cutting it loose in practice and getting it down the field?
06:00Or is he just kind of checking down like crazy, like we saw a lot of in the game against
06:06the
06:06Bears?
06:08Again, I'm just ready for that.
06:10I think we're all looking forward to this week because of what's coming up.
06:15Because you can get to the other side.
06:17You get to the other side of the river, right?
06:19We're going to find out who's going to be starting.
06:21Are we rafting?
06:22That's what it feels like, doesn't it?
06:24I don't know.
06:25All I know is that since 1999, we've been on the Titanic and we're still trying to figure
06:30out how to get past this iceberg.
06:33We're stuck.
06:34Andy, there were some good moments.
06:36The little orchestra played well.
06:38The food was good.
06:39Had great China.
06:41On the Titanic.
06:44Made a couple of playoffs.
06:46Won a game.
06:48Won a game.
06:49Yeah.
06:50Had plenty of ice for our cocktails.
06:52It was great.
06:53You're brutal, man.
06:54I want to get to the other side to where we...
06:57Well, yeah.
06:57But until we get there, we have decisions to make.
07:00I just need a team that can consistently try to make the playoffs every year.
07:04I want playoffs to be in my vocabulary.
07:07I do.
07:09Is that...
07:09Am I asking?
07:10We put...
07:11Browns fans, we put a lot of time and effort into this.
07:14We have spent countless hours rooting for this team.
07:18To me, the pinnacle is going to be what we had when I was a kid.
07:21And that was the thought that our team could make the playoffs every year.
07:27Every year.
07:28Every year.
07:28I hope that's the case.
07:31I'm just entirely just sick of thinking of, can't wait to get to the draft.
07:38Good teams don't live like this.
07:40Well, until you're a good team, you do.
07:43So there you go.
07:44Can't wait to get to the draft.
07:46Can I wrap up our little wide receiver thought from earlier?
07:49Sure.
07:49Go ahead.
07:50I'm going to throw some names at you.
07:52Since the team, in franchise history, according to Pro Football Reference,
07:58only 18 1,000-yard seasons by Browns receivers in franchise history.
08:04But since 99, when the team returned, these players have had 1,000-yard receiving seasons.
08:11Some of them will surprise you.
08:12Jerry Judy, Amari Cooper had two.
08:16Jarvis and Odell in the same year.
08:18Terrell Pryor in 2016.
08:20Oh, I forgot about that.
08:21Had 1,000 yards.
08:22Gary Barnage had 1,000-yard season as a tight end in 2015.
08:27In 2013, with the combination of Jason Campbell, Brandon Whedon, and Brian Hoyer playing quarterback,
08:36Josh Gordon set a franchise record with 1,646 yards receiving.
08:41God, that guy was good.
08:43He had demons, but man, was he good.
08:45Can I ask you a crazy question?
08:47Hold on.
08:48In 2007, it was Braylon and Kellen.
08:51Remember Antonio Bryant?
08:53Oh, yeah.
08:542005, he had 1,000 yards, and Kevin Johnson did in 2001.
08:57Do you think if Josh Gordon was playing today that his demons would be...
09:02Overlooked?
09:03Yes.
09:04No.
09:05I do.
09:07Well...
09:07I don't think...
09:08I just think society has changed.
09:10His demons might have kept him off the field just from a physical standpoint
09:14or not by an NFL suspension standpoint.
09:17That's what it is.
09:18I just think it's...
09:21Just the whole...
09:23Our culture has changed.
09:25Our society has changed.
09:26It's the...
09:27You know...
09:28I mean...
09:28He's the best receiver this team has ever had in a very short time.
09:34Paul Warfield's a Hall of Famer, I know.
09:36Right.
09:36But that one year, man, Josh Gordon was...
09:39That's the best wide receiving play we've ever had on this team.
09:42It was unbelievable.
09:44He was unbelievable.
09:44He was so good, it was ridiculous.
09:45Mary Kay Cabot, my partner in Get Us Some Wide Receivers,
09:50will join us next from the PlainDealerCleveland.com.
09:53It's Baskin and Phelps here on The Fan.
09:56So we're going to talk to Mary Kay.
09:58That'll be great fun.
10:00And then coming up at 12 o'clock, maybe some Browns players.
10:05We hope we're going to hear from the quarterbacks.
10:06We will definitely hear from Todd Munkin in that noon hour.
10:10It's Baskin and Phelps.
