00:22Let us pray, praise honour and glory be to you O Christ who your
00:30faithless disciple Judas sold for a vile sum of money to the Jews who were persecuting
00:35you and conspiring against your life. Root out, I beg you, from my heart all evil love
00:42of any creature. Grant that I may never prefer anything to you. May I always show the most
00:51perfect charity towards all men, especially those who trouble me. Pardon me, my Holy Redeemer,
00:59for having so often prepared vain and perishable things to you and for having for the sake
01:05of vile pleasures turned myself from you. Praise, honour and glory be to you O Christ
01:12who ate the Passover with your disciples at Jerusalem according to the commandments of
01:18the law, giving them an example of humility and holy love by kneeling down on the ground
01:24and washing their feet, wiping them with a linen cloth. I pray that this your example
01:31may penetrate my soul, destroying thoroughly any haughtiness and pride within me. Give me
01:39O Lord the deepest humility that I may without delay perform the lowest ministry to all men.
01:46Give me perfect obedience that I may with complete diligence observe as your commandments whatever
01:52your appointed representatives may decide. Give me the most fervent charity that I may sincerely love
02:02all mankind. Praise, honour and glory be to you O Christ who out of your unspeakable love gave us the
02:11sacrament of the Eucharist and in it given yourself to us with wondrous liberality so that you might remain
02:20with us even bodily unto the end of the world. Grant me I beg you O Lord an earnest longing

02:29in kindle in my innermost soul an intense hunger for this adorable sacrament. Grant that when I go to
02:37the table of life I may receive you with chaste affection, complete humility and perfect purity of heart.
02:45May my soul so thirst for you now and so languish in your love that I may one day be

02:53enjoy the delights of your eternal kingdom to the glory everlasting of your name.
03:00Praise, honour and glory be to you O Christ who when you were about to leave the world commanded and
03:07comforted with words of unspeakable sweetness your disciples and most earnestly commended them in prayer
03:15to your Father. Most plainly showing how tenderly you loved them and us who were to believe through
03:23their word. Grant that my heart may ever more relish your word and that I may find your words sweeter
03:32than honey to my taste. O that the spirit of that burning exhortation may so glide into my heart
03:41that I may be wholly transformed into your love. So direct all my ways O Lord my God
03:48that your holy will may be done in and by me for ever and ever.
03:54Praise and honour and glory be to you O Christ who went out with your disciples across the Kedron Brook
04:01and came into the garden which you knew would be where you would be taken. May I entirely give up

12:21We're reading from the Gospel according to St. Luke chapter 15.
12:28Jesus said, A man had two sons.
12:31The younger of them said to his father
12:33Father, give me the share of the estate that will belong to me
12:38And so he divided his assets between them
12:42After a few days, the younger son gathered all he had
12:45And left on a journey to a distant country
12:49Where he squandered his wealth with a wild lifestyle
12:53Then, after he had spent everything
12:55A severe famine took place in that country
12:58And he began to be in need
13:01So he went and worked for one of the citizens of that country
13:05Who sent him to his fields to feed pigs
13:09He was longing to eat the carrot pods the pigs were eating
13:12But no one gave him anything
13:17When he came to his senses he said
13:19How many of my father's hired workers have food enough to spare?
13:23But here I am, dying from hunger
13:26I will get up and go to my father and say to him
13:29Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you
13:33I am no longer worthy to be called your son
13:37Treat me like one of your hired workers
13:41So he got up and went to his father
13:44But while he was still a long way from his home
13:47His father saw him and his heart went out to him
13:51He ran and hugged his son and kissed him
13:54Then his son said to him
13:57Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you
14:00I am no longer worthy to be called your son
14:04But the father said to his slaves
14:06Hurry, bring the best robe and put it on him
14:10Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet
14:14Bring the fatted calf and kill it
14:16Let us eat and celebrate
14:18Because this son of mine was dead and is alive again
14:21He was lost and is fed
14:24And so they began to celebrate
14:28Then the elder son was in the field
14:31As he came and approached the house
14:33He heard music and dancing
14:35So he called one of the slaves and asked what was happening
14:39The slave replied
14:40Your brother has returned and your father has killed the fatted calf
14:44Because he got his son back safe and sound
14:49But the elder son became angry and refused to go in
14:53His father came out and appealed to him
14:56But he answered his father
14:58Look, these many years I have worked like a slave for you
15:02And I have never disobeyed your commands
15:05Yet you never even give me a goat
15:07As I can celebrate with my friends
15:10But when this son of yours comes back
15:12Who has devoured your assets with prostitutes
15:15You killed the fatted calf for him
15:19Then the father said to him
15:21Son, you are always with me
15:23And everything that belongs to me is yours
15:27It was appropriate to celebrate and be glad
15:29For your brother was dead and is alive
15:32He was lost and is fed
15:35This is the word of the Lord
15:37Thanks be to God
15:42The story of the prodigal son is well known
15:45And I'm quite sure we all feel some sympathy for the son who remained at home
15:49And worked day and night doing his duty
15:54Jesus tells us that there was great rejoicing when the wayward son returned home
15:59And in the same way there is rejoicing in heaven
16:01When a sinner repents
16:05The son who stayed home and true
16:07Was never lost and so could never have been found
16:11We all know what it is like to find something we truly thought lost
16:15But it does not mean that we appreciate those things we have never lost any of the less
16:23However, let us take a few moments to consider the prodigal son and his relationship with his father
16:31First of all, he did not politely and respectfully ask for his share of the inheritance
16:37He demanded it
16:40The father, whatever his feelings might have been, complied with the son's wishes
16:45And gave him what would have been due to him
16:50Then when the money had been squandered away
16:52We read that the son came to his senses
16:56Suggesting that he had taken leave of them earlier
17:00And realised the folly of his ways
17:03And so he resolved to return to his father
17:06Not as a son but as a humble servant
17:08And beg his forgiveness
17:13I suspect that some of us, at least
17:16At some point in our lives have behaved or even continue to behave like the prodigal son
17:22We have left the loving protection of our heavenly father
17:25And have gone about our own lives doing what we wanted
17:29And thereby destroying the relationship we had previously had with our father
17:36The message of this parable then is one of great comfort
17:39For it reveals a way back to God
17:41And the extent of his mercy
17:45If we turn back to him
17:46In true humility
17:48And ask for his forgiveness
17:51Then we know that this will be given to us
17:55Not only
17:56But there will be such a great welcome
17:59That the sound of the festivities will be heard from far away
18:08There are two tests to which we have a right to submit any new religion
18:13There are two questions which we have a right
18:16And which is our duty to put
18:17Before everyone who claims to come to us
18:20As a teacher from God
18:24And these questions are
18:26What have you to tell us concerning the nature of God
18:30And
18:31What have you to tell us concerning the nature of man
18:39Now of these two tests
18:40It is clear which is the simplest and easiest to apply
18:44The second
18:46We do know the nature of man
18:48Or at least we think we do
18:50Of the divine nature
18:51We are necessarily and naturally
18:53In some degree of ignorance
18:57We know something of human life
18:59And of its circumstances
19:00And therefore he who tells us
19:03That concerning man's nature
19:04Which we know to be untrue
19:06Has lost his claim upon our attention
19:08When he goes on to tell us something concerning God
19:15Consider in the light of this test
19:17As regards its theory of humanity
19:19The religion of the Bible
19:22There is a theory concerning man's nature and condition
19:25On which the whole of this book
19:27And all it professes to teach us
19:29Is based
19:31I bring this religion to the test
19:33Of one admitted and notorious fact
19:35In the nature and condition of man
19:38In order to see how it explains the fact
19:41And how it proposes to deal with it
19:46The fact is the admitted and notorious fact
19:48Of the exceptional unhappiness of man
19:53Our Lord in this parable
19:54Confronts himself with this fact
19:56As every teacher of the gospel or good news
19:59Must do
20:00If he is to win the attention of men
20:04The hero or anti-hero if you would
20:07Of this story
20:08The prodigal son
20:10Is as you see a sufferer
20:12But he is more than that
20:14He is an exceptional sufferer
20:17All the other creatures described in the parable
20:20The lower servants of the father
20:23Are bread and to spare
20:25He alone is the one who suffers starvation
20:28And more than that
20:30He is a strangely exceptional sufferer
20:32For he who suffers
20:34Is infinitely superior to those
20:36Who seem to be happy
20:40All animals that we know of
20:42Save man
20:42Seem to be subject to this twofold law
20:46Each animal has its instincts
20:47Its desires, its appetites
20:49And in the climate or element
20:51In which it exists
20:52There are corresponding objects
20:54Of gratification
20:55For those appetites and desires
20:59Man is pained by two different sources
21:03One is the pain of satiety
21:05And the other the pain of remorse
21:09Give the man all the portion of goods
21:11That can fall to him
21:12Or that in his wildest dreams
21:14Of covetousness or ambition
21:15He can desire for himself
21:19When he has enjoyed these to the full
21:21And just because he has enjoyed them
21:24Then begins to be felt a famine
21:26In his enjoyment
21:27And there does come the weariness
21:29Of satiety
21:31Into his heart and soul
21:36The bible theory of man is this
21:38That he is not his true self
21:40That he is a creature
21:42Not in his proper and true element
21:44It tells us that it has been the curse
21:46And the disorganisation
21:48Of the nature of man
21:49That in the exercise of the strange
21:51And mysterious spiritual power
21:53Free will
21:55He has wandered away from his home
21:57The father's home
21:59And claimed the selfish and solitary
22:01Possession of the goods
22:02Which the father had given to him
22:06It tells us that the origin
22:07Of all human sin and sorrow
22:09Has been this
22:10That he said
22:11Give me the portion of goods
22:13That falls to me
22:16The bible tells us
22:18That misery is the result
22:20Of this vain effort
22:21Of man to do
22:22In this world
22:23Of God
22:24Without the God
22:26Who made him
22:28And that all his misery
22:29His weariness
22:30Is but the sublime discontent
22:32Of the soul
22:33That was made to rest
22:34In its God
22:35And cannot rest
22:37In anything less than God
22:41Our religion is a historical religion
22:43It bases itself upon
22:45One life in the past
22:46It is ever renewing
22:48And revealing itself
22:49In many lives
22:50Ever since that life
22:51Was lived on earth
22:53It bases itself on one life
22:56And that life
22:57Was a perfect life
22:58The life of one
22:59Who all through his existence
23:01As far as we know it
23:03Was a life unstained
23:05By impurity
23:06A life unvexed
23:07And unharassed
23:08By sensual
23:09Or evil impulses
23:12It was a life
23:13That passed
23:13In its higher
23:15And complete obedience
23:16To the will of the Father
23:17The life that he lived
23:19The perfect life
23:20Of obedience
23:21For which all its sorrow
23:23Only came from without
23:24And only came from the fact
23:27That all around him
23:28Were not like him
23:30Equally obedient
23:32That life he tells us
23:34He can supernaturally
23:36Give to us
23:38I come that you might have life
23:40And that you might have it
23:42More abundantly
23:47May we all take a few moments today
23:49To set ourselves right
23:51With our Father
23:53Let us approach him
23:54In total humility
23:55And confess
23:56Our sins
23:59Let us beg to be forgiven
24:00Not that we might be free
24:02To repeat our sins again
24:03In the future
24:04But that we might be purified
24:05And admitted back
24:06Into the heavenly family
24:08We walked out of
24:09Be it hours
24:10Days
24:11Weeks
24:11Or years ago
24:13There is a right
24:14Royal welcome
24:15Waiting for us
24:17So what
24:18Are we waiting for?
24:25Let us pray
24:28Lord of all power and might
24:29Who is the author and giver
24:32Of all good things
24:34Graft in our hearts
24:35The love of your name
24:38Increase in us true religion
24:41Nourish us with all goodness
24:43And of your great mercy
24:45Keep us in the same
24:46Through Jesus Christ
