00:00on the wise heart right we make it right call kyle wright hotline cleveland.com's very own
00:05ashley bastock ashley welcome to the show hey thanks for having me guys we finally have some
00:10some i would say real football but i think we all consider that actual games but we have some
00:14football practices to talk about so that in and of itself is exciting i gotta give the browns
00:19credit here i needed i needed a pep in the step it's been there's been some boring parts to this
00:24sports year and we didn't do anything at quarterback that's usually something that
00:28gets people rah-rah denzel's extension grant delpit's extension and then of course we have
00:34the practice today and jadavian clowny in the building now that's what i call a 24-hour news
00:39cycle yeah i mean it felt like every kind of major possible storyline we were waiting on just really
00:47just happened at once right i mean those two extensions for denzel and grant uh and then
00:52adding another edge rusher that's something i think a lot of people were expecting that they
00:58would add some veteran edge rushing depth so uh of course no official word yet on jadavian clowny but
01:04it certainly is interesting because when you're a veteran and do one of these visits like it just
01:10seems to me like it's certainly heading in one direction and it wouldn't be surprising if this
01:15reunion happens which i don't think uh a lot of people would have said like a week ago oh wow
01:20yeah
01:21you seem really optimistic about that or at least that it could happen all right so before we get to
01:25the quarterbacks then uh how this ended the last time with clowny i i maintain it was a miles garrett
01:30versus clowny thing that kind of got in the way but how do you how do they reconcile that how
01:34do they
01:35how do they write that wrong well i mean i think number one obviously the fact that miles garrett
01:41isn't here anymore uh is one thing and also this defense is totally different in terms of scheme
01:48right so i'm sure those discussions are ongoing and and look i think jp my confidence just comes
01:55from the fact uh given clowny's veteran status in this league uh when these sort of meetings sort of
02:01leak out like this like his did today uh it just certainly makes me think it's trending in one direction
02:06because if he wasn't close uh or not wanting to come here and you have that veteran stature like
02:13why would you even make the visit is kind of how i'm looking at it uh so that's just sort
02:17of my uh
02:18following connecting the dots if you will less than what i'm hearing but i do think it's about this
02:26attack style defense you look at what jadavian clowny has been able to do and like he is like really
02:31an
02:32eight or nine sack guy he had eight and a half sacks last year for the cowboys i was shocked
02:36when i saw
02:37that number today uh people may remember he had the nine sacks when he went to baltimore right after
02:43he left cleveland back in 2023 uh he had nine sacks here his first season in 2021 that performance
02:49allowed him to get some contract incentives so uh look i think he's a guy at this point if you
02:54can get
02:55one good year out of him that's a win and the way he knows how to get after quarterbacks i
03:01think that
03:01veteran presence is is welcome and i think like in terms of how his time ended here last time
03:07uh everyone just probably wants to move on right and i think he can look at it and say
03:11it's a different situation and i'm gonna have the chance to get after the quarterback this time
03:16around uh maybe more so than i did in 2022 when when he was more unhappy obviously all right ashley
03:22i made mention to sean had two uh interceptions today uh the word on the street and by street i
03:29mean it's the things jp and i have heard from practice today uh that your door looked better than
03:34deshawn can we call today a win for shador over deshawn you know you guys know me i love the
03:43nuance
03:43around this discussion and i know that's kind of the boring maybe way to look at it but i will
03:50say
03:50the two interceptions for deshawn were not great but what i'll also say is like i think we're just too
03:57early in camp for anyone to outright separate themselves i mean i think shador sanders had my
04:03favorite throw of the day it was a deep ball to casey concepcion when they were two spotting during
04:09seven on seven it was a really nice ball that he threw but this was only a 90 minute practice
04:15some stuff they're running at half speed they don't have the pads on yet so maybe it was a better
04:21individual day for shador that i i would still say i'd caution anyone from thinking there's any real
04:28separation occurring at this point in camp and of course todd munkin today kind of quipped that
04:32his deadline to have a starter is week one so he's not really budging on a timeline for this
04:40starter decision but i think anytime you have a quarterback throwing interceptions when these
04:46practices aren't padded i mean i know that sort of stuff drives todd munkin crazy he talked about
04:51it in the spring as well that is a delicious word salad there but all i heard is shador won
04:56the day
04:56that's what i heard too yeah yeah yeah at least you did answer the question you got down to the
05:00heart
05:00of it and that's what we appreciate you dressed it up and i like that about you you made it
05:04seem
05:04like oh i'm not gonna do it why you guys have me on though you have me on to talk
05:09about what happened
05:09and look i went over what happened so did a great job kind of my view i and again it's
05:15all you can do
05:16my biggest point is i think we're not declaring a starter after today either way i think that's
05:21important and it's i mean anyone expecting it like this week i would be shocked if something like
05:26that happened at this point we got to get through this ramp up in this early phase but shador did
05:31win the day he won the day uh so within that though was it peculiar to yourself that concepcion
05:36and boston were starting with the twos with uh with shador and even final he had that same thing as
05:43well he was he was not the starting left tackle today was the one jones what was the any rationale
05:48into that any any thinking into that yeah i mean i think what we can glean and it's hard because
05:53we heard from todd munkin before practice i'm sure this is something that we are going to ask
05:57him more in depth about tomorrow but so it was surprising but it wasn't right because i think
06:02they started the spring with all of those guys that was sort of the rotation dewan was the number
06:07one left tackle the rookie receivers were working with that second unit as well and in the spring todd
06:13munkin talked about really just wanting to make sure these young guys who are going through a lot of
06:18this for the first time uh can all be on the same page together uh can really ramp up at
06:23their own
06:23speed uh and that sort of thing so it makes sense but i think my guess right now is that
06:29that's just
06:30how they want to handle this early part of training camp and that we're maybe going to see these guys
06:35slowly mix in with the first team uh and you know whether or not that's the right move or whether
06:42or not
06:42they can take on stuff faster remains to be determined but uh yeah so in that way it was
06:48surprising but it wasn't because surprising because we already kind of saw them do this and i don't know
06:52that i was expecting them to go back to it uh but also training camp is a totally different animal
06:57so
06:57the more i think about it i'm like okay it's it's not really all that surprising that they decided to
07:02work it like that today ashley uh i'm a bit of a simpleton so i'm a little bit confused here
07:08okay
07:08so i think you can help me walk through this you know when when the browns traded miles garrett for
07:14jared verse in three picks part of the line was their timelines don't match up right and the idea
07:21that the browns are going to win in the next two years feels a little far-fetched for people and
07:27then
07:27i watched them extend denzel ward who is a very similar age to miles garrett then i watched them
07:33re-sign grant delpit another relatively older player here they they bring in jadevian clowny that
07:40doesn't feel like we're going to win in two years move and uh they are now two drafts into what
07:46feels
07:46like a bit of a reset and usually the thought is it takes about two to three years to kind
07:51of reset
07:52here so everyone's running with this timeline thing am i wrong to look at what the browns actual
07:58moves outside of trading miles garrett are and they don't look like a team that is uh in the wrong
08:04timeline here yeah you know what i do think a lot of that is so interesting but it's also like
08:11kind
08:11of they've been describing it almost like both ways i think ever since that miles trade and um you
08:18know we talked about at the time that miles deal really being one of one like they didn't want to
08:22trade him until this particular deal came up and until they could get jared verse in return right
08:28like we know how crucial jared was the the inclusion of jared by the rams in that deal
08:33uh to getting it done so it's like i kind of sort of get it right and at the same
08:39time though it's
08:40like when you have the best edge rusher in the nfl the best defensive player in the nfl why do
08:46you
08:46get rid of him for anything and i think that's kind of what's hard to to reconcile especially for a
08:51lot
08:51of fans who look at this and now they see these extensions come out uh and i do think bottom
08:56line
08:56like this team still thinks its defense is going to be really good like they're running a very
09:02similar system uh mike rutenberg will throw in his own tweaks especially i think in the secondary
09:08that's kind of what he's known for uh but this is still going to be an attack defense and they
09:12have
09:13you know outside of miles garrett the other key veterans like denzel and grant now locked up into it
09:19i think they're going to expect more of carson swessinger so it is just sort of fascinating in
09:24hindsight to look at the garrett deal uh and just these other moves that they've made and and again
09:29i think the garrett deal just kind of underscores like with this front office with this team uh it's
09:34a no until it's not right so that's why i think it makes it so hard to guess uh at
09:41the intention
09:41sometimes and why i think ultimately fans were so confused when the miles trade initially happened
09:47uh after months and months of saying yeah no no way we're not trading him ashley i want to go
09:52back to
09:52today's practice because the we'll be out there friday and and so we'll get our eyes on it for
09:57the first time but uh compare how it was from an intensity standpoint to what we've seen over the
10:02the previous you know five years with stefanski yeah i think it's just a lot more of these competitive
10:08team periods right and that's what it felt like in the spring as well so when i say that i'm
10:12talking
10:13more seven on seven 11 on 11 uh offense versus defense type things as opposed to maybe less of a
10:20concentration on individual stuff uh and todd munkin like keeps things moving right i mean he
10:25uses all the time he's allotted i think today it was like they have that 90 minute limit uh as
10:30they
10:30get into that ramp up period i believe tomorrow's practice also uh needs to be shorter just per the
10:35cba guidelines but he uses every minute i think we're seeing an emphasis on those competitive team
10:41periods uh and i think it's about smart competition right because i think we're seeing more of that but
10:46today todd munkin also clarified he doesn't plan on tackling to the ground during this training camp
10:52which i also thought was interesting because we saw some of that last year but i get the rationale
10:57behind it because it's i think not always seen as the smartest decision when you're talking about
11:02potential injury risks to do that so there will be that sort of thud tackling is how he described it
11:07but no one's going to be going to the ground in these practices but i think just overall we're seeing
11:12more of those competition periods and i think for a young offense especially that's that's really
11:17important ashley todd munkin answered a question today about like who he he's excited to see in
11:23these camps and uh he did sidestep that question but it just in terms of the roster like what i
11:28we
11:29know we're paying a lot of attention to the quarterback what what players are you the most
11:33interested in and and kind of most excited to see over the next week or so i'm most excited to
11:38see
11:38these rookie receivers i think number one when you have electric receivers that can make explosive
11:43plays that's always exciting to watch in these training camp practices i always used to talk
11:48about when amari cooper was here uh when he was at his best it it just looks different when guys
11:54like
11:55that uh can get in these drills right and i mean we all know how highly they think of casey
12:00concepcion
12:01and denzel boston i think they're going to be huge parts of this offense i'm excited to see
12:06how they look number one is more gets added to their plate uh as the pads come on especially
12:11i really think for in particular that's going to be a time for denzel boston to shine just knowing how
12:18he is uh with getting the ball in those contested catch situations and i'm also really excited to see
12:25casey concepcion and and the way he creates separation i know uh he was maybe the best receiver
12:31in this draft class along with jordan tyson uh at creating separation so that that's like his
12:38calling card so i'm excited to see those guys really do what they do best in this new setting
12:44you guys talked to harold fanon jr today can you give us the update on what he had to do
12:49with his
12:49the injury and where he's at yeah so harold fanon jr is full go which is good news for this
12:56football
12:56team because of course he did not really do anything in the spring and today he clarified
13:01that it was due to a surgery that he had in the off season and at first kind of cagey
13:06about what
13:07exactly the nature of that procedure was but he did relent and say it was related to the week 17
13:13groin injury he suffered against the steelers that which caused him to miss the finale against the
13:18bangles as well uh and yeah when we specifically asked him do you expect a sort of like ramp up
13:25throughout this he said no because he actually reported early with the rookies got cleared about
13:31a week before he said to be full go and he feels good so i mean it's always something i
13:37think to keep
13:37an eye on whenever a guy's coming back from something soft tissue but definitely good for this offense to
13:42hear that he's feeling confident uh going out there with no restrictions right now ashley this is uh i will
13:50camp debut four live hits with us stronger than deshaun's day yeah i'll say uh you and shador won
13:57the day very happy to say that you did a great job you know what i'll always take the win
14:02with you guys
14:03thanks that's what she says now until we run it off the rails later and then she'll be like never
14:08again
14:08you
14:08you
