00:00We're going to lose our mind right now because another camp celebrity is out here with us in
00:04person. Usually we get to talk down the line to her and then you know she has the threat of
00:10hanging
00:10up. We don't get to do that today. I mean theoretically she could run away but she's
00:14been on her feet all day long. She pretty much has to stay around. It's Ashley Bastock of
00:18cleveland.com and the orange and brown talk podcast. Hi Ashley. Guys do you want to see
00:23my 40 speed if you make me mad and I run away? Well they time it down there so like
00:29we can
00:29actually get a good judge. Let's just go. Jake let's move this whole setup by the 40 thing. We
00:34all three run 40s and we see who wins. That's not going to go well for us. Okay what if
00:38I walk the 40?
00:39You know you know that's not going to go well for us. I know I have to take a win
00:43when I can get it
00:44right? You're not 40. All right I am 40 so my 40 would just not be acceptable. By the way
00:51the threat
00:51of tearing my Achilles I think is the real concern there. I don't think your 40 at like 25 was
00:55good
00:55though. No no no but no but we're not thinking about that. We're thinking about my 40 at 40.
00:59Okay all right. So I guess we can start here. What do you see out there today from the quarterbacks?
01:04Yeah you know I think and we've kind of been talking about it as we were milling around
01:09leaving the field like to me this was the best day we've seen from Deshaun Watson in camp. It felt
01:15like more so one of those spring practices that we talked about so much in May where he was just
01:22being
01:22very decisive. He was stringing some throws together. Again they're not really doing these
01:28move the ball periods yet. Todd Munkin talked about that the other day but to me that's the standout.
01:37Like he had a sort of rebound day. I think maybe we were expecting to see that more yesterday and
01:42really we saw less of him yesterday. It felt like in those team periods Todd Munkin explained that today
01:47they ran out of time. They were up against the clock at the end of practice and they thought
01:51Shador Sanders ended practice really nicely yesterday. So I will say though I thought this
01:57was Deshaun's best overall day of stringing throws together. Is it fair to say this was the best day
02:03of practice overall? I don't know if I would say it was the best day of practice just because
02:08JP it's hard when there's this skeleton crew out there. Like the last handful of days they haven't
02:14been able to two spot because they're so thin at certain spots right now. And you know Todd Munkin
02:19today talked about they're fine in some spots right like receiver they've mostly been fine.
02:23And for the most part all these injuries nothing catastrophic that we're dealing with nothing
02:27they expect anyone significant to miss a ton of time for. But they're they're short on practice
02:33bodies and you could tell guys were feeling it yesterday as a result they only went 90 minutes
02:38today. So we knew that was the plan coming in. But I don't know if we can necessarily call it
02:43the
02:43best day of practice just with all the guys down. It's it's kind of hard maybe but I mean Todd
02:47Munkin still a handful of times not happy with some of the procedural stuff going on. We saw it
02:52out there. So I think I've noticed it. I'm sure you notice it more because you guys are here every
02:57single day. What's the biggest difference between a Todd Munkin training camp and a Kevin Stefanski?
03:04I mean I still think it's overall the number of competitive periods like we just see more of them.
03:10We've seen more of them since the spring and maybe less of the individual type stuff or
03:17offensive only type stuff defensive only type stuff. So I think that's one thing. I mean I also
03:22think this element of we're not really seeing veteran days off. We're now we're seeing these
03:26guys with nagging injuries which I mean I think is a function of this stretch we're in this 10
03:31practices and 11 days and you know some of these guys like like I'm curious if we're going to see
03:35Carson Swessinger again by the end of this week. Like I don't think he's not dealing with
03:39anything major. Same with Mason Graham. But like are you going to trot these guys out here when
03:43you're in the middle of this stretch? So I would say that's the difference. Kevin I think was much
03:48more overall conservative with if you're feeling anything you're sitting out and I think like it
03:53was to their detriment in 2024 especially. There were a ton of guys that missed either a lot of
03:58training camp or all of training camp that year and you saw it when they played the Cowboys and got
04:02like steamrolled in week one that season. The number is what 16 bodies I think. Is it 16?
04:07Close to it yeah. Yeah like the past couple answers though you brought up that idea of the
04:12injuries it's clearly weighing in your mind. We haven't even really touched on the amount of
04:16bodies that are out. You mentioned a certain key spots the center position too. Whiplier was out
04:20doing work today because that position was taking such a hit. How are you capping this? What are you
04:25seeing? Yeah you know I think again it's probably a combination of to me the the schedule itself
04:33right so we're in this stretch we just hit the halfway point. Like 10 and 11 days right? 10 and
04:3711 days and we're in the middle of the six days in a row. Now Todd Munkin explained his thinking
04:43on
04:43this he talked about it that oh it was about keeping players off days the same wanting them to be
04:49in a
04:49routine this way they're always getting off on Sundays like you get where they're coming from
04:53but at the same time I would have loved to hear if there was maybe some analytics people pushing back
04:58on that like hey maybe we should throw an off day like should tomorrow have been the off day
05:03maybe like I I have always been since this schedule came out worried about this stretch and it's a
05:10different staff but we know that this Browns team has had struggles with soft tissue injuries nagging
05:16injuries like we've just we've seen it time and time again so it did make me nervous and you know
05:22luckily as I said before nothing catastrophic so far at least. Ashley one of the big talking points
05:29and about a week ago when it first came up I kind of pooh-poohed it because it was day
05:33one of camp
05:34but was the rotating of Spencer Fano and DeJuan Jones at left tackle is that more about DeJuan
05:41maybe pushing Spencer Fano is that more maybe Spencer isn't quite where they wanted to be yet?
05:46You know if I had to guess I do really think the latter is probably more likely because it's a
05:52rookie
05:52and it's one of the hardest positions on the line so I do wonder and I don't mean to diminish
05:59what
05:59DeJuan Jones has done this offseason because I think it's it's probably a combination of the two
06:05but I would say when you draft a guy at number nine you expect him to be your left tackle
06:08of the future
06:09and probably start from day one so that's not to discredit DeJuan he's in the best shape that I've seen
06:13him in in the time he's been here he's so lean he's playing well we know that they've had an
06:18affinity
06:19for him on the left side since really those three games he started there in the middle of 2024 but
06:24I I do think like it was pretty it's been pretty significant that this is what we've seen and Todd
06:30Munkin said today like yeah there is a chance DeJuan Jones could be the starter over there and then I
06:36followed up and asked because I I expected to maybe see them rotate DeJuan more like are they
06:42going to try DeJuan at right tackle one day would they try to move him into guard we talked about
06:47that a few weeks ago but really like I'm I'm surprised if it was just about getting DeJuan
06:51Jones a spot like why haven't we seen him at right tackle on Titus Howard who's played right guard
06:56at right guard in some of these practices it's been pretty strict DeJuan and Spencer at left tackle so
07:03I have to wonder if that's ultimately what we're going to see I know DeJuan has some durability
07:08questions because of the three season ending injuries he's had but we know how happy they
07:13are with him and I think we're you know we're scheduled to hear from George Warhop in the next
07:17few days maybe tomorrow depending here the O-line coach and he was very complimentary of DeJuan at
07:23the end of minicamp as well all right let me ask you because we touched on DeJuan from Shador today
07:28and
07:28then I guess we got to throw Dylan in these conversations it doesn't seem as likely now if DeJuan's
07:32going to actually show up to this battle but yeah how did how did the other quarterbacks not
07:36named DeJuan Luff yeah I mean I thought it was fine Shador Sanders did have a pick today in that
07:41red zone period they did it looked like maybe Grant Delpit tipped it and I have my roster here I
07:49think
07:49it was Winston Reed that actually came up with the ball on that play so not great there but I
07:56don't
07:56think like Shador came out and looked significantly worse or anything the thing that I keep thinking about
08:01with Shador is that Todd Munkin quote from either yesterday or Monday when he talked about with him
08:07it's about like getting up to the line of scrimmage and like he doesn't have anxiety and Todd Munkin
08:12doesn't have anxiety I thought that was really interesting so you know I know there's some
08:16confusion on Twitter for fans where they're seeing each day Shador Sanders complete throws right and
08:22wondering like why is this why why hasn't there been a step forward in this for him so I think
08:27it's
08:27those things that maybe you know we're not necessarily as privy to out here as they're doing
08:32the install and I'm also curious how this is going to advance for him once the install is done after
08:37Thursday and they're calling plays specifically for him and then they're calling Deshaun specific
08:42plays so I thought that was interesting and Dylan you know I thought played well today again he had I
08:47was
08:47right there I had a front row seat for his touchdown to Luke Flory the Kent Stater in the back
08:52of the end
08:52zone I thought Luke made an amazing catch there and it was another day where we did see him get
08:59second team reps so that seven on seven red zone period today it was Deshaun with the ones
09:05Dylan with the twos and then Shador but Shador was working with the ones and then Deshaun went with
09:10the two so Shador still did get some first team reps today even though it was Deshaun's day with the
09:15ones so to speak Ashley we've heard a lot about Denzel Boston Casey Concepcion the young receivers
09:22you've watched enough camps to know the difference between a guy just having a nice camp and a guy
09:26that's really putting it together are we hyping these guys a little too early is there something
09:31more we need to see from them before we can fully say week one let's go I mean with rookies
09:36it's
09:37always hard because you say you do want to see them in a in actual game and how they're going
09:41to do
09:41in defenses or maybe starting to account for them a bit more but I don't think we're overhyping it I
09:46mean every year it seems like there's those guys where their practice squad or end of the roster
09:51guys where fans fall in love with and you know what last last year was largely like Gage Larvidan
09:57and Luke Floria actually where Browns fans were so excited about them and it's like okay you're
10:00always going to be able to keep those guys around in some capacity but it does look different when
10:04you're talking about like number one number two wide receivers what they can do and I mean with
10:10Denzel Boston it's just the fact he catches everything it's hard to imagine uh him not doing that and
10:17you know I do think it's going to be important for them to get more work against the ones because
10:21we've still seen them they haven't done two spotting but when they were doing the two spotting
10:26still pre all these injuries uh they weren't going against Grant Delpit Denzel Ward when we see them
10:32though and especially Denzel Boston go against those guys and still make those types of catches
10:37I think it's really promising and I said this I made this point the other day
10:41uh on our podcast but I think like the reason people are talking about Denzel maybe a bit more
10:47than Casey is not because Casey's not performing I think he's had a really nice camp I think it's
10:51just the style of games Casey is a separator Denzel excels at those contested catches so I think those
10:58are just getting shared on social media more but it by no means has Casey uh had a bad camp
11:03or
11:04anything like that you guys spoke to Jerry Judy today uh was that believable his excuse so I have to
11:09be completely honest I wasn't over in the Jerry Judy scrum I have read the quotes they separated so
11:15I was talking to Zion Johnson because I had some offensive line questions that's an interesting take
11:19we were covered well we were covered over at Jerry Judy we have to split duty yes so you know
11:24obviously
11:25there's like four of us out here so we try to split things up so we know what's going on
11:29so I did not get
11:30uh the Jerry Judy reaction today but what is believable is when he made the comment that I saw
11:37after the fact about I never say anything about the quarterback battle here why would I say it on
11:42TikTok or why would I say it on Instagram whatever he said uh whatever platform it was on so I
11:48do
11:48believe that part of it right I don't think he's uh he's sending some some message there because
11:55you know when you ask him directly he's not saying either so why would he answer directly to a direct
12:01question on a live stream Ashley I'd like full credit here that Jonathan and I are in training camp mode
12:07yeah and that we did not go off the rails yeah we're locked in yeah this is wild this is
12:12the
12:12most locked in I've seen you guys it takes extra focus out yeah we're just always so distracted by
12:16everything else that's happening I know we're also football guys and this is when football guys shine
12:21you know when people think of Nick and Jonathan they think of football guys that's what they think of
12:25nitty-gritty football guys and that's really you see Bill Simmons said that uh he doesn't uh maybe
12:30he's not buying stock in the Chiefs because Travis Kelsey is going to be distracted being married he thinks the
12:36marriage is something that's going to derail the Chiefs season yeah thoughts I mean isn't that kind
12:41of like focused up isn't that kind of a lame take considering people were saying it when they first
12:46started dating right like it was what people were saying if anything like Travis Kelsey's numbers like
12:51get worse because he's what 35 now like 36 like it's it's fine he's had a fine career so whatever
13:00I
13:00don't think the married life part of it's going to distract him and Taylor both 1989 babies both
13:051989 you know who else is a 1989 baby is it you Jonathan Peterlin yeah it is me wow that's
13:10so much
13:11in common with the two of them people have basically said he is half Travis Kelsey half Taylor Swift a
13:17lot of people have said that about him not me but a lot of people the worst parts of each
13:20though yeah
13:20that's exactly uh Ashley great stuff we appreciate you all right thanks guys in person this was so fun
13:26you
