00:00we might actually talk to a real journalist here on the wiseheart right we make it right
00:03call kyle right hotline miles simmons cleveland's very own here and pro football talk nfl writer
00:09miles welcome to the show thank you very much gentlemen i don't know what journalists you're
00:15going to talk to but i don't think it's me well maybe this is a different miles simmons no let's
00:21let's start here let's start here with the browns quarterback uh conversation i guess because you
00:29are very plugged in journalistically uh what are you hearing about the browns quarterback position
00:35well i mean i think the competition seems to be going as expected right where it's like
00:41did you really think that either one or the other guy was going to be able to separate themselves
00:47very much i mean i i didn't just based on what we saw from shudder sanders last year and you
00:54know
00:54look deshaun watson hasn't played since 2024 and the last time he was let's call it an elite
01:01quarterback was 2020 i mean like we're talking about a guy that hasn't been an effective quarterback
01:06in one to two nfl generations at at this point so i mean i i just saw you know from
01:14your daryl
01:14writer that it was the 17th interception that's been thrown you know by browns quarterbacks just
01:21happened in practice a few minutes ago so nine of them were from deshaun by the way
01:25yeah yeah number four is is doing a lot of that so yeah this is i think what what is
01:31to be expected
01:32and you hope that some of the things that todd munkin can do with scheme can make up for the
01:38deficiencies at quarterback but i think that we all understand this year is going to be probably
01:44pretty trying unless and until somebody really emerges as a strong quarterback option miles do you
01:50believe that there could be a potential conspiracy at play here with this quarterback competition just
01:56because we have that sound from deshaun watson all the way back in otas and mandatory camp in june
02:03when he said that he never doubted that he'd have another opportunity to start games for the browns
02:09based on internal conversations that he had like is there any world where maybe this competition is a
02:16sham deshaun's going to be the starter and we've all are just left to put up with it
02:22well i mean if todd munkin is to be believed and i don't know that he's done or really said
02:29anything
02:29that makes us not feel that way that way yet then the players are going to make the decision
02:35right the way that they play is going to dictate and determine who ends up being the starting quarterback
02:41and so i mean that is going to have to do with practice it's going to have to do with
02:45meetings
02:45it's going to have to do with walkers it's going to have to do a lot of things that we're
02:49not
02:49necessarily privy to as a public right but also we're going to have to see what they do in these
02:54preseason games and i i don't place all that much weight on preseason game performances because there's
03:01so much else that that goes into it but obviously it's better to perform well than it is to go
03:08out
03:08there and look like you don't know what the hell it is you're doing right so i i i don't
03:13know that
03:13there's really all that much of a conspiracy and deshaun watson does have the opportunity to start
03:19but he can squander that opportunity by playing terribly like things have gone well from the most
03:28part in camp so i think that's where i struggle with is i don't think it was coincidental that the
03:34deshaun is the front runner has renewed after two decent practices from him and even like yesterday
03:40he had a decent practice but shador was still the better quarterback from literally everyone that i
03:46like it's not just me saying it's not just what i saw but what everyone told me as well and
03:52and so
03:52what i struggle with is how does two uh decent practices override shador being consistently the
04:00better quarterback including being the only quarterback who's been better against the ones
04:06more than one time like i just i struggle with the well it must be about the meetings and it
04:11must be
04:12about all this other stuff when previously kevin stavansky used the stuff nobody conveniently saw
04:18to make whatever he wanted to have happen happen at quarterback for the browns you see where my trust
04:23issues come in here even if i do myself trust in todd well yes and you know how many times
04:31have we
04:32gone back over this you know since the browns came back in 1999 where it's like well what's really
04:37happening at quarterback do the browns have a viable quarterback i mean is it gonna be kelly
04:41holcomb or tim couch i'm like we can talk about this you know from all kinds of different standpoints
04:46but i think todd munkin deserves the chance to put his own spin on things and do things his way
04:54and you know it seems like andrew berry the rest of the browns brass from the haslam's on down want
05:00want todd munkin to be able to do his thing because he's a different kind of coach very obviously
05:06than the one that was there for you know six years and had been really the most successful coach
05:12that we've seen since 1999 so i i i'm letting this play out from todd munkin standpoint and whatever
05:19criteria he wants to use he's going to use and we're going to see it on sundays it's probably not
05:24going to look great at least not early in the season offensively because that's just the way it's going
05:29to work but you know we'll see how it goes over the course of the rest of the season i
05:34i don't know
05:35miles the browns have two other quarterbacks in this room as well giving them four
05:41in the room in totality they're probably only going to carry three what do you think comes of
05:47the dylan gabriel v taylon green thing i mean i i'm a little bit surprised that dylan gabriel isn't
05:54at atlanta already right just based on what we know about dylan gabriel uh kevin stefanski and the
06:02falcons quarterback situation there and it's not necessarily like dylan gabriel would become all of a
06:09sudden the number one option there but i mean when you've got to a ton of ilo who's dealing with
06:12the back issue you've got michael pennix jr who's not been medically cleared from his acl um it just
06:19stands to reason to me that that would be a good opportunity for dylan gabriel to go in and at
06:25least
06:25have an understanding of what the offense should look like because he's been with the head coach
06:30and offensive coordinator there before so yeah i i would think that gabriel is probably the odd man
06:36out so to speak um and we'll see if that actually ends up materializing in a trade or or you
06:42know if
06:42he's just placed on waivers i'm at the end of the month miles overall how do we how do we
06:49kind of
06:49handle the fact that the the quarterback room not seen as any good but the rest of the roster actually
06:54looks pretty decent well i mean if you don't have a quarterback you're you're not going to be able
07:00to do very much of anything right i mean because minnesota disagrees by the way they went nine and
07:04eight last year with the third worst quarterback room in the nfl and and what did they do i mean
07:09were they in the playoffs because i don't believe that they played a playoff game they did not but
07:13they went nine and eight i'll take nine and eight this year buddy okay that's all right but like
07:20are you gonna win anything going nine and eight i mean then you're in mediocrity and you've got to
07:24make some sort of trade in order to get a quarterback that you know in the draft that can actually
07:30then
07:30pilot you to the future and actually pilot you to the promised land i i just i don't know how
07:36great
07:37the roster really really is outside of quarterback i mean we've got we've seen that there's some young
07:42emerging talent they've got to be able to put it together for another year and i'm not saying that to
07:48be i don't know too pessimistic or whatever but i think that that's a lot of the time what happens
07:53in
07:53the nfl i mean did anybody think that washington would take as much of a step back as they did
07:59last
07:59year after what we saw from jayden daniels in 2024 certainly not but they did because that's the
08:04reality of the nfl and it's hard to be consistent year in and year out losing miles garrett on that
08:11defense is extraordinarily significant and i say that as somebody who has watched jared verse closely i live
08:17in los angeles i used to cover the rams i think jared verse is a very very good player but
08:22he's not
08:22generational like miles garrett it's just not and so when you take away that generational pass rusher
08:28that affects everything on defense i don't think the defense is going to quite be as good as it was
08:33last year we'll see how these new young wide receivers end up playing for the browns but if
08:38nobody can get them the ball then it really doesn't matter if they can create separation or not i want
08:43to see more from judkins i want to see more from fan and i want to see more from swessinger
08:46so all of
08:47that i think adds up to hey you know we we'll see what happens and i might i'm not
08:52trying to be too pessimistic about this but i am a realist and you know this is just the way
08:57the nfl
08:58works sometimes you might be a realist but i'm the realist and i will tell you sir i am ready
09:05to put a
09:05burger on this i'm ready to throw down the burger bet gauntlet you have you have enticed me to do
09:12this
09:12miles uh do you want do you want to just take the under so if the browns win five games
09:17or less
09:18i buy you a burger if they win six or more you buy me a burger deal that's fine i
09:24i will take that
09:26deal i will take that deal all right looks like i will i look forward to my probably early december
09:31burger then okay great i would love to be wrong i would love nothing more to be wrong all right
09:37speaking as somebody who still has a kelly folkham jersey in my closet all right but i just
09:43i've called this league for over a decade and i i kind of feel like i know what i i
09:47see at some
09:48point you know here's here's the problem you can't pull a fanta fanta and i uh john fanta and i
09:55had a
09:55burger bet on last year's browns team in which by the way i was being called a hater because i
10:00took the
10:00under uh so i'm consistently right about just so you know and john fanta lost the burger bet and then
10:07never paid up i i'm a man of my word i will pay up my burger bet whether it's to
10:11in and out i'll just get
10:12a gift card because i can't really deliver to you b i will just no fanta ing okay i got
10:18you hey nick
10:19hey i i know where the station is i used to work there once upon a time i'll get you
10:23a burger
10:23all right miles uh i know i argue it's it's a it's an occupational hazard but you're great as always
10:30buddy great to hear from you hey you guys too take care miles simmons there i might have treated him
