04:18the son of David, king, in Jerusalem.
04:22All is to no purpose, said the preacher.
04:25All the ways of man are to no purpose.
04:29What is a man profited by all his work,
04:32which he does unto the sun.
04:35One generation goes and another comes,
04:38but the earth is forever.
04:41The sun comes up and the sun goes down,
04:46and goes quickly back to the place where he came up.
04:51The wind goes to the south, turns back to the north,
04:55circling around forever.

17:16How then is the Jew better off?
17:18Or what profit is there in circumcision?

17:29If some have no faith,
17:31will that make the faith of God without effect?

17:35But let God be true.
17:38There where every man is seen to be untrue,
17:40as it is said in the writings,
17:43that your words may be seen to be true.
17:46You may be seen to be right when you are judged.
17:50But if the righteousness of God is supported by our wrongdoing,
17:54what can be said?
17:56Is it wrong for God to be angry with us,
17:59as men may say?
18:01In no way,
18:02because if it is so,
18:04how is God able to be the judge of all the world?
18:07But if,
18:08because I am untrue,
18:10God being seen to be true gets more glory,
18:14why am I to be judged as a sinner?
18:18Let us not do evil so that good may come.
18:22A statement which we are falsely said by some to have made,
18:27because such behaviour will have its right punishment.
18:31So what then?
18:33Are we worse off than they?
18:35In no way.
18:36Because we have made,
18:38before,
18:39made it clear
18:40that Jews as well as Greeks
18:42are all under the power of sin.
18:45As it is said in the Holy Writings,
18:47there is not one
18:48who does righteousness,
18:50not one who has the knowledge of what is right,
18:53not one who is a searcher after God.
18:56They have all gone out of the way,
18:58and there is no profit in any of them.
19:01There is not one who does good,
19:04not so much as one.
19:05Their throat is like an open place of death.
19:08With their tongues,
19:10they have said what is not true.
19:12The poison of snakes
19:14is under their lips,
19:16whose mouth is full of curses
19:18and bitter words.
19:19Their feet are quick
19:21in running after blood.
19:23Destruction and trouble
19:24are their ways.
19:26Of the way of peace
19:27they have no knowledge.
19:28There is no fear of God
19:30before their eyes.
19:33Now,
19:34we have knowledge
19:35that what the law says
19:36is for those
19:37who are under the law,
19:39so that every mouth
19:40may be stopped
19:41and all men
19:42may be judged
19:43by God,
19:45because by the works
19:46of the law
19:47no man is able
19:48to have righteousness
19:49in his eyes.
19:51For through the law
19:52comes the knowledge
19:53of sin.
19:56But now,
19:57without the law,
19:58there is a revelation
19:59of the righteousness

20:01to which witness
20:02is given
20:03by the law
20:04and the prophets.
20:06That is,
20:07the righteousness
