00:00Being black and queer hair is really sacred for me,
00:03especially because like your hair is like your crown chakra
00:06and you're used to like your mom or your grandma
00:08like braiding your hair.
00:10Working on your hair is also just like
00:12a divine practice in itself.
00:16Hi, my name is Mars.
00:18My pronouns are they, them.
00:19I'm a film photographer and visual artist
00:21living in Bushwick.
00:23This year will be my first time attending Pride in New York.
00:29Like touching my head, like my scalp, it's a sacred spot.
00:32Having autonomy over like how I want my hair
00:35is really important to me.
00:36And it's also like a deeply spiritual process as well.
00:39The bleaching, dyeing, braiding process.
00:42And I like the labor, like I think it's like affirming.
00:45My hair is definitely an extension of me.
00:48Doing your hair, having someone's hands on your hair,
00:51is an energy exchange, which is why I tend to usually
00:54do my own hair.
00:57When I was in high school, I was like really obsessed
01:00with like wearing my natural hair out.
01:02But like I would always like bleach and color it.
01:06Like around like when I graduated, I was like seeing this dude
01:09and he like broke my heart.
01:10So that kind of like initiated the shaved hair phase.
01:14My inspiration for today's look is fiery underwater siren.
01:21Sorry, my voice is pretty monotone, but I'm excited.
01:28Normally I do my own hair, but I'm not nervous
01:31because I feel like just being black, like with hair,
01:35there's just like a lot of community.
01:36I know I'm in good hands with cough.
01:39Hey Marge, so good to see you.
01:40So what are we looking to get into for today?
01:43I'm looking for a red, a middle part moment.
01:48So we're looking to move out of the blue green vibe,
01:51taking it to like a fire engine red,
01:53and just give you a new cut, a new color.
01:54We're going to wash your hair, blow you out,
01:57braid you down, and then just transform you
01:59into exactly what you're going for.
02:00Are you ready?
02:01I'm ready.
02:02Okay, let's get into it.
02:05So I fell in love with OGX when I was about 13,
02:09around the time when I first got introduced to hair
02:12with my mother using all of OGX's products all the time.
02:15Fast forward 2017, right after she had passed away,
02:18I had gotten reached out to by OGX,
02:21and the synergy was there and it was aligned.
02:24I'm really excited to transform Mar's hair
02:26because I realized they have this beautiful cobalt blue hair,
02:29and I'm going to take them to a really fire engine red,
02:32take them out of what they're normally doing,
02:34and bring them into an entirely new realm,
02:36and they'll be blessed by yours truly.
02:39So now we're going to go in with the Argan Oil of Morocco
02:42penetrating oil just to give you, again,
02:44some more moisture to the scalp, lock it in.
02:46And I just love that it's able to add that extra boost
02:50of va-va-voom into the scalp.
02:52That's going to be our word for today.
02:53Say it with me.
02:54Va-va-voom.
02:55Look at that. Look at that.
02:56Look. We got it.
02:58So now I'm going to put this wig cap on
03:00just to protect your hair while we have a wig on.
03:03I'm going to ask you to hold this for me.
03:05I told you we're besties during this process.
03:07Okay, so here's Lola.
03:09So you've never worn a wig outside of the shaking goals
03:13that we used to wear back in the day.
03:16What do we think of this color?
03:18Good job. It looks good.
03:20It looks good?
03:21Yeah.
03:22Okay. Now how does the red make you feel?
03:25It's giving me, like, that bitch.
03:28Really?
03:29It's giving assertives.
03:31Exactly.
03:32To me, red symbolizes luck, prosperity, and victory.
03:37The past couple of months, I've just been, like, having blue hair,
03:42and I've just been, like, in this, like, blue phase.
03:45I don't know.
03:46And then also, like, ending this relationship with this girl.
03:50And it's, like, now, like, doing red.
03:52Like, I feel like I'm jumping into, like, a new energy.
03:55Summertime, the summer's coming in.
03:58The summer is coming in, and we got to be focused on us.
04:00And we went in with a glueless wig today,
04:03meaning I didn't use anything to adhere the wig,
04:06but it fits like a glove.
04:07You want to definitely protect your hair
04:09and make use of this protective style,
04:11especially while maintaining your natural hair.
04:13Mm-hmm.
04:14So I'd say hair transformations
04:15and personal transformations do go hand in hand
04:18because I feel like our emotions sometimes can lead us
04:20to making impulsive decisions,
04:22or sometimes we might just feel like
04:24we want this drastic life change.
04:27I can't wait to see your selfies on Instagram
04:29because I'm definitely going to be smoking.
04:33I'm thinking we should keep it straight,
04:35let the trusses shine, and we really see the color.
04:38So I'm doing the last touches.
04:40I'm finding you out.
04:41What does it mean for you to be going to Pride
04:43for the first time?
04:44It means a lot to share space
04:46with, like, the friends that I've met here
04:48and, like, just be around a lot of queer folks.
04:52Mm-hmm.
04:52When you were back at home,
04:54did you have a bunch of people
04:55or a bunch of folks that were queer
04:58that could relate to you,
04:59or you felt like you were missing that part?
05:01Oh, no.
05:01I was definitely surrounded by queer folks.
05:04There's, like, a large queer art scene in Miami.
05:07This scene is different.
05:09I feel like they all have their perks.
05:11I just feel like queer people in Miami
05:13know how to party better.
05:14Oh.
05:15That's just it.
05:15Are you coming from New York?
05:17I am.
05:23I'm going to go in with the multi-benefit hairspray,
05:25which is one of my all-time faves.
05:26I keep this in my kit.
05:27It's my trusty bad boy.
05:29But I'm just going to tame these flyaways at the top
05:32just to get it as neat and as clean as possible.
05:35I wish you could see what that did there,
05:36but it brought it from, like, here to here.
05:40Expressing myself through my hair and my art
05:43is just really important to me.
05:45Just me, like, being unapologetic and taking risks,
05:49like, with my work or just, like, with my hair
05:51has to do with a lot of, like, my own personal boundaries
05:54and just, like, how I view myself.
05:56All right.
05:57You ready for this?
05:58Yeah.
06:00Oh, wow.
06:02Okay.
06:03I'm fake.
06:06I'm obsessed.
06:07I'm loving this one.
06:08I feel like it really complements your skin.
06:10I really love the eyebrows.
06:12Yeah, even though this style might be temporary,
06:14I feel like at the moment it's really helping me express
06:16how I feel.
06:20I guess what I would want people to take from this
06:23is to kind of just step out of their comfort zone.
06:27It's Aerie season.
06:28If you want to shave your head, you should just do it.
06:29Like, if you want to bleach it, do it.
06:31I'm going to wear this hair everywhere
06:33because it's not coming off.
