00:00I'm not really scared about the haircut today.
00:03I'm mostly really excited to get this weight off my shoulders.
00:08Hey, I'm Kelly, and today I'm getting an asymmetrical pixie cut.
00:12I recently moved to New York from California,
00:14and the transition has been awesome so far.
00:18I'm really excited for all the new opportunities.
00:21So the inspiration for this cut is more of like a Kate Mara
00:26or a Kristen Stewart-esque type cut.
00:29I feel like my hair is weighing me down right now,
00:31and I would love for a lighter cut,
00:33something a little bit more wispier, more flowy for the summer.
00:37My hair journey has definitely been adventurous.
00:39I've tried a number of hairstyles.
00:42I've colored my hair once when I was in middle school.
00:46I've had like an emo phase, but after about ninth grade,
00:50I had to dye my hair all black again,
00:52and I've kept it black ever since.
00:53Now that I'm older,
00:54I've been getting short haircuts every three years or so.
00:57Every time I cut my hair short, I donate my hair,
01:01and I'm very much looking forward to doing that today.
01:04Hi, I'm Nick Orojo, and my salon is called Orojo Studio.
01:09I've been cutting hair now for almost 40 years,
01:11and my specialty is definitely doing a major makeover.
01:15So with Kelly, she's got a massive amount of hair.
01:18So what we're going to do is we're going to do one of the most challenging things.
01:22We're going to cut the hair short because when you cut the hair short,
01:25it actually makes the hair look and feel a lot thicker.
01:28So I'm going to have to put my razor to the test.
01:31I'm really excited, and I've got a great canvas to work on.
01:38So because Kelly is going to be donating this brilliant hair,
01:42we have to section this head into four different quads.
01:46We want to make sure that we get the most amount of hair that we can donate.
01:51We're going to work through different panels.
01:54We work through the back first,
01:55and then we're going to move into the sides and through the top.
02:14We're going to give her two great shampoos so I can really cleanse the hair.
02:29As I start to cut through the back,
02:31I'm going to start to see how the hair reacts to the razor.
02:34She actually has very curly hair on the inside.
02:38So my razor, I'm using it to really kind of take out the thickness,
02:43take out the volume and get the hair to lie a little bit smoother
02:47and then a little bit flatter.
03:06As I move into the sides, I'm going to cut the sides even shorter.
03:10As I move into the sides, I'm going to cut the sides even shorter.
03:10The reason being, I need to create a slim shape from the front.
03:14As I work with my razor, I'm really taking out even more hair so that I can create flatness.
03:38Then as I approach the top, I'm going to start to open that razor.
03:42What that means is, I'm leaving longer lengths but I'm going to be thinning the hair out.
03:47I'm actually softening the cuticle by taking the razor down the hair shaft.
03:52That enables me to leave the hair long but to create the hair so that it's more floppy, movable and
03:59wearable.
04:05We're going to use a pressing spray to lightly press the hair with a smoothing iron.
04:10I'm only using a few sections because I want this to be very easy and very simple for Kelly to
04:16achieve the look every single day.
04:24And then to finish, we're actually going to use a light paste.
04:28That's going to bring out the definition, the separation, the peaciness and the hair will have that beautiful lived in
04:36look.
04:40Okay, Kelly, I can't wait for you to see it. Are you ready?
04:43Yes.
04:43Let's have a look at the brand new you.
04:48Wow, I look so cool.
04:54I feel so much better. I literally feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I just,
05:02I feel so much better going into the warmer weather also.
05:07When she turned around, I saw her eyes light up. She felt fantastic and when I showed her the back,
05:13she really could see how we crafted the shape and really created a beautiful look.
05:18I love the attention to detail. It's rare that folks know how to cut hair as thick and coarse as
05:24mine. So I'm really grateful to have that expertise.
05:27To keep this style looking great, she's going to need to get it cut at least once every eight weeks.
05:33And my recommendation would be not to shampoo the hair. I would ask her to look for a co-wash
05:38by using the co-wash twice a week.
05:41That'll keep her hair feeling clean. It'll keep her scalp clean. But the natural oils and the emollients will help
05:48her hair look and feel soft, supple, and with real definition.
05:54I feel so much more confident to go out in the world and really just have my personality shine.
05:58And for practical reasons, I definitely am excited about cutting my shower time in like half, maybe even more than
06:05that.
06:06And I'm really just excited about the effortlessness of it.
