00:03it was really debilitating for me.
00:05If you would have told me that I'm sitting in a room
00:06with people that I don't know without my wig two years ago,
00:10I probably would not believe you at all, but here we are.
00:13So I'm excited to see how much more self-growth
00:15I have with it.
00:19Hi, I'm Maria Ballardinelli,
00:21and today I'm getting a red wig.
00:23When I first lost my hair due to alopecia, I was blonde,
00:27so the wigs I had for a year or so after that were blonde
00:31because they looked the most natural to me.
00:33And then recently I tried on a brunette wig with Mona,
00:36and I loved the way I looked in it,
00:38so I switched and started wearing that.
00:39So I think it'll be fun to have a red wig coming up
00:42for festival season in the summer months.
00:45When I was 18, that was the first time I ever figured out
00:49that I had alopecia.
00:50I was getting my highlights done for Coachella,
00:53and my stylist turned me around and said,
00:56have you ever seen this bald spot before?
00:58I thought, there's no way I'm going bald.
01:00Like, I'm 18, how is that possible?
01:02Came home that night to my mom, sobbing,
01:05thought it was going to be the worst thing ever.
01:06I was never going to feel pretty again.
01:08But then over the summer was the first time
01:11I couldn't put my hair up in a ponytail
01:12without seeing the spots on the back.
01:14So I sought out finding a wig,
01:16and I had a really hard time opening up to people
01:19about my story because I was still really grappling
01:21with the fact that this was the rest of my life.
01:24So when I was wearing the wig, I kind of stopped
01:29a lot of the things that probably would have helped me
01:31feel better about myself at the time and bring me endorphins.
01:34And then I found Mona at the Wig Fairy,
01:37and she started doing my wigs and immediately made me feel
01:40so confident and so pretty and so worthy.
01:44So I drop off my wigs here with Mona
01:47so that she can wash and style them.
01:48I'm the first person that is going to see my red wig is my mom.
01:54I'm so excited to see her and show her my wig because
01:57my mom really has been, like, everything.
02:01Like, since I first had alopecia, like, she used to tell me, like,
02:05I wish it could be me and not you.
02:07Like, she wanted to be there for me.
02:09And then now, like, I text her and I'm like,
02:12oh, I'm going to see Mona.
02:13Like, I FaceTime her when I'm at the salon and show her, like,
02:15my new styles and stuff.
02:16And she's been, like, the biggest source of, like, empowerment ever.
02:21So I'm, like, unbelievably grateful for her.

03:59Today, finding the perfect wig for Maria,
04:01I'm going to be putting on several different red tone wigs for her
04:05to make sure that the color matches her skin tone.
04:08We're going to have Maria sit down and we're going to give her the dream cut.
04:13She has a wig that has bangs in it.
04:15She has a wig that has a drape bang in it.
04:18So what we're thinking about doing on this new current piece
04:21is giving her a little bit longer flowier layers
04:24that she could have something a little bit different.
04:27What I do is I love to spritz the top of the hair
04:31before I move forward with any type of cut
04:34because I like to give it that natural body.
04:36Once I do that, then I will take my regular scissors
04:39and I will be giving her longer layers around the face.
04:44I end up styling the wig after I do that
04:47in order to see where the bangs that I've just cut lay.
04:51And if I need to cut any more, then I do that at that point.
04:55To camouflage Maria's hairline, because she has a lace front and a skin top,
05:01we're using the Wick Fairy powder with an angled brush
05:03that we're going to go into the hairline
05:05and have it look more natural that it's growing out of her scalp.
05:10I always recommend our clients to have their wigs cut step by step
05:14instead of cutting it off right away because the hair does not grow
05:18and it's nice to feel out the hair for a while and see if you need any more cuts done
05:22to it.

06:25So the wig is adjustable at the back here and it's tightened or they'll sew it to be a little

06:32tighter so that it lays completely flat on your head.
06:34But it's completely secure on my head right now.
06:38It's not going anywhere.

06:49Maintaining a wig is pretty easy.
06:52Anyone can wash their own wigs and style their own wigs since all the wigs that we carry is all
06:56human hair wigs.
06:57But we do offer the service that you can bring it into the salon and have it washed,
07:02have it colored on regular basis.
07:04A normal wig typically wears about two to three weeks.
07:09My mom is going to be so excited when she sees me and I cannot wait to show her.
07:16My 18 year old self would be so proud of me right now.
07:20And I mean my 20 year old self is really proud of me right now.

07:37For other women, especially young girls going through alopecia,
