00:12It's the best time to be in the shop with color and cuts, and it's just really cool to see
00:17everyone on the boulevard showing their looks.
00:25Hey, I'm Sneaks, and today I'm going to be getting a Pride-inspired rainbow hair dye.
00:30I'm getting a rainbow hair dye because Pride Month is coming up and I've never had this hairstyle before and
00:37figured it'd be pretty festive.
00:39Yeah, I'm super nervous. I've never had any other color, let alone multiple colors, so I'm excited to see how
00:45it comes out. Hopefully it looks good.
00:47Hi, I'm Cruz, and I'm the owner of Iconic Barbershop in West Hollywood.
00:51We do everything from cuts, colors, fades. We do a little bit of waxing. We have a lot of creative,
00:57talented artists that work inside that are also queer.
01:00So we are a queer-owned barbershop, and we do queers to anyone that walks through the door, so we
01:07try to make this a safe space for everyone.
01:10Barbering is definitely a male-dominated industry, let alone being a queer female barber.
01:15It really was something I wanted to strive to set myself apart from.
01:19I definitely needed to create a clientele base where women could come in with short hair and actually feel comfortable
01:26in someone's chair.
01:27And it went from women to gay men to people just knowing that there's something about a woman's touch that
01:34they trust.
01:35And so I had to build a lot of trust in my community. I had a lot of women that
01:40come in. They'll go into a barbershop to get a haircut, and men will look at them and be like,
01:45I don't know what you want.
01:46They're like, I want a haircut. And so because of that alone, I really wanted to make sure that people
01:51knew that they could come in and actually get what they're asking for.
01:54I really just needed to hone in on creating that space for them and to make them feel comfortable so
02:00when they leave that they could have that confidence boost and, you know, know that they can be themselves wherever
02:06they are.
02:06Are you excited about doing your hair today?
02:09Yeah, a little nervous, excited, but I trust you.
02:11You know, it's so cool that you gave me creative freedom because we're going to do some really awesome, vibrant
02:16colors.
02:17I think that, you know, it's really important that you came in to, like, express yourself for pride especially.
02:22And you're going to get a lot of looks and a lot of people maybe coming up to you. So
02:26I hope you're ready for that.
02:27I love it. Let's get it.
02:28The first process that happened today was I had to lift the already existing blonde hair.
02:35Doing that, I did a bleach soap cap.
02:40So basically added shampoo into a bowl of lightener and developer of 20 volume and placed it on her head
02:48for 20 minutes to lift the cuticle and open the hair shaft so that it would allow the direct dye
02:53to be placed correctly.
02:55The process to open up a cuticle basically would be to shock the hair shaft again.
03:00So just what I ended up doing is just wanting to open that back up.
03:04The process is just, you know, the shampoo is a little bit more gentle and it's just going to help
03:09open up the hair shaft so that color can be applied.
03:14The second step, rinsing her out and taking her back to the chair to blow dry.
03:18I decided to take my tea edger and do a hard part line through the side, taking it from the
03:24front of her temple all the way to the back of her knee.
03:27The products I decided to use for hair color were Pravana Direct Dye Vivids.
03:32So the colors are pretty safe on already lightened hair.
03:38They are direct dyes, which mean they do last a little less than a semi or demi-permanent color would.
03:44But that's good because they're like the best colors to kind of tone out in the hair naturally.
03:49I placed the color strategically blue, green, yellow, orange, and pink down the side of the striped area where I
03:58did the hard part.
03:59Then I took that same technique and I boiled in blue, green, yellow, orange, pink onto the hairline and new
04:07growth area for about six to seven pieces.
04:10I flipped through each and separated them with foil to make sure that the other hair was not getting touched
04:18by the colors.
04:1930 minutes, we're going to take her back to the sink.
04:22I'm going to wash everything out together.
04:25Then we're going to come back.
04:26We're going to blow dry and I'm going to do any necessary trimming or cutting and then finish off the
04:33look with sea salt spray,
04:35by giving her some texture and giving the style a look.

04:46I think I like the blue.
04:48Ooh, nice.
04:49The hot pink is a vibe too, for sure.
04:52So I just made it really easy for you to kind of have different styles with the colors in there.
04:57There's so many that you can kind of shake it out, have more of a blonde moment, green.
05:03Then you can come up in here.
05:05You have more of like the orange pinks and blues that pop out.
05:10So, I mean, it's just a versatile way of like having hair color in there.
05:14So these are the neon series of Pravana.
05:18And so these ones are really lit up under black light.
05:21Wash with as cool water as you can when you take a shower or so.
05:25It will last a little longer for you.
05:33For our view, I'll show you all three things.
