00:00My hair is already really dry.
00:03I don't want her to get even more dry.
00:06I guess I'm most fearful about losing the texture that I have already.
00:13Hi, my name is Tylea, and I'm getting a little copper curly hair transformation.
00:19My hair journey is kind of complicated.
00:21I played with a lot of hair styles and hair colors back in the day.
00:26I chopped all my hair off and started completely over from scratch,
00:32and it was really, really short.
00:33So I'm letting her grow back and letting her do her thing.
00:37I chose copper because it's a pretty bold color.
00:41I'm feeling really, like, fiery energy for this last few months of the year,
00:46and I need just some fiery energy to keep me going.
00:50My name is Esmeralda Mecco, and I am a curly hair specialist at Curls 101 in Beverly Hills.
00:55As in my family, in my mom's special side of the family, they have really curly hair,
00:59and I always was blow drying the hair, relaxing the hair, and it was still frizzy.
01:03When you learn how to take care of curly hair, you're accepting yourself more.
01:07You're a little bit more comfortable with your curls.
01:09Now, in the society that we are, curls are definitely more accepted than it used to be so many years
01:13ago.
01:13Hello, gorgeous.
01:15Hi, Esmeralda.
01:15How are you?
01:16Welcome to Curls 101.
01:17I'm good.
01:17How are you?
01:18I'm so excited to have you here.
01:20I'm so excited to work in these beautiful curls you have.
01:24What are we doing today, gorgeous?
01:25So I think we're going to do copper today.
01:28Oh, how perfect.
01:29Copper is my favorite, especially for fall, for this time of the year.
01:33So let's play.
01:34Yes, let's do it.
01:37So today, we're going to start with her color first.
01:40We're going to do her highlights.
01:41We're going to use a technique called Pintura.
01:43Pintura is a hair coloring technique that it allows me to be very creative in terms of like,
01:49I could paint curl by curl and still save the integrity of her hair as well.
01:54This type of process actually is going to last most likely four hours.
01:58So in Pintura technique, we do not use foils.
02:01We are going to use just simple paper and cotton in our hair,
02:04and then we're going to cover her with plastic so we can process her hair.
02:08After that, we're going to rinse it.
02:09Then we're going to do the actual color.
02:12I'm doing the reverse level process is because I want to see a multidimensional copper color.
02:18That way, her curls are going to stand out more.
02:23I've dyed my hair before.
02:24I've went ash blonde, purple, blue, red, like a deep dark red.
02:30I've pretty much tried everything except copper.
02:33I guess I'm most fearful about losing the texture that I have already.
02:38So I want to learn the steps that it takes to hydrate properly.
02:43We're going to cover her with a plastic just so the color could process.
02:48After that sits for 30 minutes, then we're going to do the styling process,
02:52which is the hydration process in the sink for the conditioner.
02:55Let's say you use a cashmere sweater.
02:57You don't put a cashmere sweater in hot water because it's going to shrink.
03:01So curly hair, if you put it in hot water, it's going to shrink and dry even more.
03:05The main process of dehydration is done in the shower.
03:08When they're in the shower, they have to make sure that the conditioner is massaged properly with the water.
03:15And it's hydrated properly so the cuticles could be shut down and could be filled up with moisture from the
03:21conditioner and the massaging process that you use in the shower.
03:25The hot water, especially on the very top of her head, is the part that gets the driest.
03:30It strips away all the natural moisture and all the moisture that she actually probably has left on her hair.
03:36The cooler water shuts down the cuticles and it keeps it much better, much more shinier, much more healthier because
03:43the cuticle is completely shut down.
03:45If you want to take the excess water that is left in your hair, I suggest you use a microfiber
03:50towel or a cotton t-shirt
03:51because it does not bring any frizz out and it just takes the amount of water that you need to
03:56take out without taking the moisture or any of the styling products that is into the hair.
04:03Open your eyes.
04:12Open your eyes.
04:14Open your eyes.
04:19Open your eyes.
04:19Open your eyes.
04:20Open your eyes.
04:20Open your eyes.
04:21Open your eyes.
04:21Open your eyes.
04:23Open your eyes.
04:24Open your eyes.
04:25Open your eyes.
04:25Open your eyes.
04:25Open your eyes.
04:26Open your eyes.
04:31Open your eyes.
04:35and I'm just in love with the end result if she looks and feels so better than I
04:42ever expected. And I want you to feel your hair, look how soft your hair feels with all that condition.
04:45Yes, it feels so good and I just love how like rich, I don't know if that's the word, but
04:52it feels so rich. So how am I maintaining this red? So this is going to need a little bit
04:58of extra care from what you were doing before. You're going to definitely stay away from too much hot water
05:02in the shower.
05:02You're going to give yourself a conditioning treatment at least once a week and massage and hydrate your curls the
05:10way I thought you were when we were styling the hair.
05:13Tabitha, I love you. You are flourishing. You are thriving. You are winning. You're gorgeous. And I'm here to nourish
05:24and protect you.
