00:00Today I'm most nervous about the color. I have really brittle hair. Despite the
00:06fact that I never apply heat to it, I just feel like it's really sensitive. I'm
00:10afraid to have it burned or, you know, permanently damaged in any way.
00:14Hi, I'm Lisa. Today I'm at Heroin Salon getting a sun-kissed baliage and a
00:18shaggy fringe. But before you see the transformation, don't forget to subscribe
00:21below. Growing up, my parents had no idea what to do with my curly hair. They
00:25themselves do not have curly hair, so they used to try to brush it and blow
00:28dry it every morning. And I was just completely unaware of what to do with my
00:31natural hair texture. In college, I used to do a lot of different colors and
00:34straighten it. And then I decided as soon as I graduated that I really wanted to
00:37see what my natural hair looks like. So I shaved everything off, I had the tiniest
00:41little pixie cut, and I just started growing it from scratch. And this is four
00:45and a half years of progress since then. I'm going for that sun-kissed look to kind
00:49of give the appearance that I'd left my apartment this summer when we've all been
00:52sitting inside. I'm also getting some layers and a light fringe. Right now I'm
00:56at a really triangular shape with my curly hair, and I really wanted to have a
01:00little bit of lift and bring out my curly texture. I'm Sarah Louise, and I'm a
01:05stylist at Heroin Salon in New York City. It's just a little heavy. I feel like
01:10it's like bringing you down. I definitely think you need some layers up in here so
01:14it gives it more of a defined shape. And then after your color is all finished,
01:18I'll go back in on wet hair and kind of texturize it, and then we'll kind of pick out
01:22those shorter pieces around your face. Perfect. I'm good? Yeah. Awesome, let's get started.
01:26Let's do it. First I'm going to go in with shears and put a general foundation in
01:33her hair, just so that Michelle can see what the cut consists of when she goes
01:37in with the color. And then I'm going to keep the length by just trimming up the
01:40ends a little bit, and we're going to be doing this cut mostly dry. I wear my hair
01:45back every single day because it's such a triangular odd shape that I've run out of
01:49ideas of what to do with it. I get my hair cut once a year out of necessity just
01:54to get rid of the dead ends, but I've never actually had like a good shape or
01:59layering that I've liked. Everything has just been like a maintenance. So this will
02:03be like my first like big girl cut.
02:08Hi, my name is Michelle and I'm a master stylist here at Heroin Salon in New York City.
02:12So today I will be foiling her and hair painting. The first thing we're going to do is
02:16mix our lightener. We're using short cloth lawn meat with six volume developer. We're
02:22going to do a full foil on her starting at the back. We're going to do some fine
02:26sections. Once the foils are in her hair, we're going to go back in and balayage the ends.
02:33I'm excited to feel like I have some control over the shape and color of my
02:37hair when right now everything feels like a waiting game. Normally the summer is a time
02:42when we all pop off and do all the outdoor activities and kind of get them all in.
02:46Obviously the summer was different. I've been inside for most of it. So I really want to
02:49give the illusion that I was in the sun on a boat living my best life surrounded by
02:54people and friends just like soaking up all of that vitamin D.
03:01When she has processed, we're going to remove all the foils, rinse out the balayage that we have
03:05hair painted onto her and we're going to tone her hair. We're also going to do a root shadow on
03:10it today just so it has a really nice blend and softness throughout it. It's going to look amazing
03:16on her. She's got beautiful curls. It's just going to accentuate her curls a little bit more,
03:21give her some dimension and brighten her up.
03:29Right after the color is finished, I'm going to go in with a razor and kind of break up that
03:33cut,
03:33make it not so structured. And then after it's all dried, I'm going to take my shears and cut a
03:38few
03:38fringe face framing pieces to really bring out her eyes. I think it's going to give her all the
03:44volume around her face and around her head that she needs. Right now it's just really long and it's
03:49weighing her down so I just wanted to brighten her up.
03:58All right, are you ready to see it? Let's do it.
04:04Oh my god, it looks so great. I love it. It's exactly what I wanted.
04:23My hair does look very healthy. It feels healthy. I love it so much. It really looks
04:28like I was in the sun all summer not hiding in my apartment. Thank you so much.
04:35I love it so much. It's basically exactly what I wanted. It looks super natural and I love all
04:42these short pieces in the front. I feel like they're really fun. They're going to give my
04:45face a little bit of dimension and I guess it's one step closer to a full fringe.
04:51Now that I actually have layers and my hair looks really healthy and styled in the back,
04:56I might actually start wearing it down instead of just pinning it back every day.
