00:00Hi, I'm Tatiana and today I'm getting a curly hair chop.
00:05Before we get into the transformation,
00:06be sure to subscribe below.
00:07I cut my hair about three years ago,
00:09but never up to my chin.
00:11I've always let it come down to around my shoulders.
00:13I'm like kind of tossed up with my hair.
00:15I love that it's long, I love that it's gotten long,
00:17but I don't feel like it's healthy.
00:19My natural texture is actually not straight at all.
00:22It's curly, I actually grew up with a really curly afro
00:25when I was a child, but with blow drying from pageants
00:29and my mama was taking me to the salon every weekend
00:31and getting these deep conditioners
00:33and going under heat so much,
00:34I kind of lost that texture for my hair
00:37and I really want to see what it can do with curls.
00:40This is my first year moved out for my parents,
00:41so I feel a little more sense of independence.
00:43I think it's time to reclaim my curls
00:45and kind of give myself that power with my hair.
00:49All right, so what I'm gonna do is cut a little bit more
00:52of that length off now,
00:53and then we're gonna cut your hair wet, okay?
00:55Okay, I'm ready.
01:06I'm ready to feel freer.
01:07Yay!
01:08I bet!
01:09Look at all that.
01:10Looks good already, so let's get you ready.
01:13We're gonna shampoo it now.
01:23Hair is very much prioritized in the Latinx community.
01:27Growing your hair, it's seen as a really good thing.
01:29as a blessing.
01:33Every time I see my grandmother,
01:35she would always be like, God bless your hair.
01:36And if you cut it, it's seen as being rebellious
01:39or defying what their beauty standards are.
01:49My mom, every time I even told her I wanted to cut my hair,
01:52would cry or make this big show and say that,
01:55I should not do that because hair is seen as this ideal,
01:59you know, our moms always took us to the salon every Sunday.
02:02I would always get a blowout.
02:03I am nervous because my hair is sort of part of my identity.
02:07When you go on Instagram, it's just me
02:08with this long straight hair.
02:10And people are always like, I want your hair.
02:12You know, this is my dream hair.
02:14Please teach me your ways.
02:15And I feel like I'm gonna be, you know,
02:18this whole different person, but I'm excited.
02:22It's, like, excited nerves.
02:37I'm most excited about finally getting my hair back
02:40to being healthy and seeing what my curls can do.
02:43I've never really seen what they've been capable of
02:45since I was a child.
02:46So to finally see my curls back in action in spring,
02:49I know it's gonna take a lot of time
02:51because it's the number one tip they say
02:53when transitioning here is patience.
02:55But I'm willing to wait and see what they're, you know,
02:58what my curls can do.
03:10I'm gonna do a little bit more dry cutting,
03:12just to enhance the shape a bit.
03:14We're almost there.
03:17The back, it's incredible.
03:18You have so much curls in the back.
03:25You ready, girl?
03:27Yeah.
03:28Oh, my God.
03:31What do you think?
03:32This is so different.
03:33Yes.
03:33I love it.
03:34That's my hair.
03:35That's your hair.
03:36And it's just gonna get better from here.
03:39Woo.
03:39Yeah.
03:40I love my new hair.
03:42I feel freer than ever.
03:44It feels like a whole weight is off of my shoulders.
03:47About to send a selfie to my mom.
03:49Hi.
03:50Can you check your text messages?
03:57Oh.
03:58My.
04:00God.
04:01Me getting my curly hair isn't about me defying my straight hair.
04:04It's just more so being able to do both.
04:07It opens up a larger conversation as well
04:09and getting girls to embrace their hair from a young age,
04:12especially Latina girls,
04:14and told that, you know, long hair is beautiful.
04:16And I'm excited to be able to show them
04:18that short curls are also beautiful
04:20and that you can represent the Latina community as well.
